A fun, interactive story starring one of the Scottish Highlands’

most famous residents — the osprey

Ollie and the OtterA Scottish Osprey Story

STORY BY EMILY DODDILLUSTRATIONS BY KIRSTEEN HARRIS-JONES

Ollie the osprey loves to swoop into the water and catch fish. But once he’s caught them, he’s useless at throwing them! And if he can’t throw a delicious fish to Isla, she’ll never become his friend.

Rory the otter says he can help Ollie practise his throwing.

Full of fun sounds, this is a brilliant story about doing what you love, by interactive storyteller Emily Dodd, with gentle illustrations of a host of loveable Scottish birds and animals in the picturesque Scottish Highlands.

Emily Dodd is a screenwriter for CBeebies’ Nina and the Neurons, has written and presented numerous science shows, and is the author of several children’s books including Can’t-Dance-Cameron and The Grouse and the Mouse.

Kirsteen Harris-Jones has a BA in children’s illustration for publishing. She is also the illustrator of No Such Thing As Nessie! (see p. 10) and The Grouse and the Mouse.

A stunning tale from the Scottish Hebrides with lyrical words and hauntingly

beautiful illustrations

Louise Greig is a poet and author born in Scotland. She has won several writing prizes and lives in Aberdeen with her rescue greyhound, Smoky.

Vanya Nastanlieva was born and raised in Bulgaria. Her picture book Mo and Beau was Highly Commended in the 2011 Macmillan Prize for Children’s Book Illustration. She lives in Cambridge, England.

The Island and the Bear

STORY BY LOUISE GREIGILLUSTRATIONS BY VANYA NASTANLIEVA

Anything can happen anywhere. Anywhere was an island. Anything was a bear.

One windy morning on a wild and quiet Hebridean island, a bear appeared where there should not have been a bear. The gentle giant played happily in streams, danced in the wind, and would not harm a living thing. But even friendly bears don’t belong on Scottish islands. Will he ever find his way home?

This touching tale, recounted in Louise Greig’s gentle verse, and brought to life by Vanya Nastanlieva’s enchanting illustrations, is inspired by a true story that has since become legend in the Scottish Hebrides.

ROBERT J. HARRISOne day Arthur Conan Doyle will create the greatest detective of all — Sherlock Holmes. But right now Artie Conan Doyle is a twelve-year-old Edinburgh schoolboy with a mystery of his own to solve.

While sneaking out to explore Greyfriars Kirkyard by night, Artie and his best friend Ham spot a ghostly lady in grey and discover the footprints of a gigantic hound. Could the two mysteries be connected?

These strange clues lead them to a series of robberies carried out by the sinister Gravediggers’ Club and soon they find themselves pitted against the villainous Colonel Braxton Dash.

Will Artie survive his encounters with graveyards and ghosts in the foggy streets of nineteenth century Edinburgh — or will his first case be his last?

Robert J. Harris, author of The World’s Gone Loki series and Will Shakespeare and the Pirate’s Fire, brings the young Conan Doyle to life in this ingenious detective story full of twists, turns and clever reveals.

Robert J. Harris is the author of many children’s books, including Will Shakespeare and the Pirate’s Fire, Leonardo and the Death Machine and zany Norse-god trilogy The World’s Gone Loki! Born in Dundee, he now lives in St Andrews with his wife, sons and his dog.

First in an ingenious new detective series starring the young creator of Sherlock Holmes

The Awkward Autumn of Lily McLean

LINDSAY LITTLESONThings that could go wrong at high school:

The work might be too hard. Maths lessons can only get worse!

Bullies might stick my head down the toilet. (Jenna told me that happened once, to someone who knows someone she knows.)

I could get lost in a maze of corridors.

All the teachers might hate me. I’m Jenna’s little sister, after all.

Telling people you hear voices doesn’t win you many friends. Especially when you’re starting high school. Especially when everyone thinks you’re just like your troublemaking big sister.

Lily’s hoping to put all the madness of the previous summer behind her but with serious friend dramas, nasty rumours and a big sister who might end up in jail, the last thing Lily wants is to start up that weird psychic stuff again. But it might be her only hope...

Spend the autumn with Lily in this sequel to Waterstones Children’s Book Prize longlister The Mixed-Up Summer of Lily McLean by Kelpies Prize winner Lindsay Littleson.

Lindsay Littleson is a primary school teacher in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Since taking up writing for children in early 2014 she has published a short story with Walker Books, in addition to winning the Kelpies Prize with her first children’s novel, The Mixed-Up Summer of Lily McLean.

“ There should have been noise in the playground. Instead, the world was silent as if the mute button had been pressed. All eyes were aimed at me, like daggers. I closed the car door and dad screeched into reverse, desperate to get away from me. I watched the car until it disappeared down the long drive and out of the school gates. The maroon and yellow ribbons still hung there, not fluttering now, but drooped and looking pathetic in the rain. I forced myself to start walking, sure my legs wouldn’t hold up. That was when the volume was turned up full blast. I was yelled at, shouted at, called the most horrible of names. I began to run, and it only got worse. They began to pelt me with cartons, plastic bottles, half eaten sandwiches, anything they could get their hands on. I ran a gauntlet towards the school entrance and even inside there were more pupils waiting for me. All equally vicious.”

ShadowsmithROSS MACKENZIE

“Are you brave?”When the mysterious Amelia Pigeon turns up at Kirby’s bedroom window in the dead of night, this is the question she asks him — right before they tumble into a world of ancient malevolent spirits who have torn their way into Kirby’s quiet seaside village.

Kirby isn’t feeling brave at all. His mother is in a coma following a freak (or was it?) accident, and he’s hardly talking to his dad. He’s convinced a spider is spying on him, and now a weird girl in a yellow raincoat — who appears to be a powerful, evil-banishing Shadowsmith — is dragging him into unknown danger. How brave is he really?

Ross MacKenzie, author of award-winning The Nowhere Emporium, weaves a world of magic and adventure, which twists and turns magnificently, and keeps thrilled young readers guessing right to the end.

Ross MacKenzie is the author of The Nowhere Emporium, winner of the Blue Peter Award and the Scottish Children’s Book Award. He lives in Renfrew, where he grew up, with his wife and two daughters, but spends much of his time in another world.
