CHURCH NEWS
A Father's Day MessageOn this 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time, we also celebrate Father’sDay. We do so in a time in our country when, as our presidentsaid, we face an epidemic of femicide, where women and girls dieat the hands of ruthless men.Fathers have big shoes to fill. As Christians, we acknowledge Godto be our Father, the model of all fatherhood. Jesus referred to hisFather as Abba – daddy – an Aramaic word that denotes arelationship of personal intimacy. Such should all fathers be …Abba!Addressing the fathers present at St Peter’s Square on the Feastof St Joseph last year, Pope Francis asked them to imitate StJoseph. “I ask that you have the grace to be very close to yourchildren, letting them grow. They need you, your presence, yourlove!” Fathers, indeed have big shoes to fill. Luckily, they have theChristian community to help and guide them ("it takes avillage..."), and the examples of many good fathers. To echoJesus’s words in today’s Gospel, as well as St John Paul II’ssentiments he repeated throughout his pontificate: “Do not fear!”God, our Father, knows all too well the courage dads need to raisegood families.I’ve heard it said that being a great father is like having a cleanshave: no matter how good you have shaved today, you have to
shave: no matter how good you have shaved today, you have todo it again tomorrow. So, we pray for all fathers – biological, adoptive, clergy, mentors – that God our Abba may bless themtoday and throughout their daily striving to live up to theirvocation of fatherhood here on Earth. We pray for a change ofheart for those fathers who, for one reason or another, have thusfar failed to live up to this vocation.Happy Father’s Day.Fr Tshepo Duik.
Many of our catechism children have sent in messages about their dad'sfor Fathers Day. Please look out for them on our YouTube Channel on
Sunday at 10h00.

Christine Booyse gives us some insightinto how Teachers Work for God:What was your involvement at the church beforelockdown?
I have been a parishioner at the Parish of theResurrection since 1994; I remember when the presentEmmaus Hall was the church building and the parkinglot had many old, tall trees.
When I took a teaching position at Brescia HouseSchool in January 1994, the Bryanston parish was theobvious choice for my spiritual home. At that time, it
obvious choice for my spiritual home. At that time, itwas only my husband, Dean, and I but we have sinceadded a daughter and twin boys to the family. For theBrescia House School community, attendance at Massis a weekly celebration and so my involvement in theparish grew from bringing my classes to the schoolMass, preparing the youngsters for the liturgy of theWord through teaching Religious Education and hostingthe annual Primary School Carol Service in thechurch.
Ten years ago, I had a calling to become more involved in the Masses and so Ibecame a team member for Children’s Liturgy. Together with my teammate, also named Christine, we have held many Children’s Liturgy sessions in theEmmaus Hall or the gardens. We have watched many little ones grow up inthis parish and it is heart-warming to see how many of the children are so openand honest about their faith.
What has kept you busy during lockdown?Life has never been busier! Adapting and learning to become a remote learningteacher has kept me entertained and engaged. For an independent institutionlike Brescia House School, the move from teaching and learning on ourbeautiful school property to teaching and learning through a digital medium hashappened in a carefully planned and well-executed manner, and teaching dayshave not been lost. The training for both the educators and the staff membershas been intense and we don’t quite remember when we were not doing whatwe are doing now. The primary school mantra of “Girls with Grit and Grace”has stood the test of Covid-19, as both the teachers and their girls have showntrue resilience and have soldiered on with the minimum of fuss.
Lockdown has also taught me to be a virtual Fitbit runner, a Zoom ballet dancer, and a competitive Quiz Night entrant on Facebook Live. I have begun AlphaOnline - this my third time doing Alpha but my first time participating online anddoing Alpha through the Catholic Church. I am also registered for a year ofstudy through the Catholic Institution of Education, a course that has alsomoved onto the online format.
Not being able to go out with friends for an amazing meal, I have learned howto make a real Durban curry from scratch.
How have you continued to include Religious education for the Brescia
How have you continued to include Religious education for the BresciaHouse Primary School during online learning? Each school day begins with morning prayers. In my role as the Deputy Headof the Primary School, I have found great comfort in preparing the daily Biblereading, devotion, and a hymn for the Registration Teachers to use as a startingpoint to each school day. The online school day closes each day with thesaying of The Angelus – the girls rise to the occasion of being the prayerleaders and there is no greater feeling than that of knowing that your school isunited in prayer at these specific times of the school day. In my presenttimetable, I am also the First Holy Communion Class teacher, a position I amundertaking and thoroughly enjoying. The candidates received the Sacramentof Reconciliation at their First Confession this week. The new normal ofwearing face masks and keeping the social distance protocol in place made thisevent somewhat different for these young girls. However, it was a day they willremember with great joy. As from the 1st September 2020, I will be holding theposition of Head of Ethos at Brescia House School. This is a new post for theschool, and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to work at strengthening therelationship between the school and the parish. This post also provides awonderful opportunity to network within the Ursuline community.
Tell us something most people don't know about you?Having a Swiss father and a French Mauritian mother, I have a love for learninglanguages. With my collection of English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, German andFrench, I am always game to travel and I love trying out my phrases in differentcountries. Another lockdown bucket filler has been that I am learningMandarin.
I love nothing better than being on the move, and so I am a Parkrunner (with168 runs under my belt) and an adult ballet student (Grade 5 Cecchetti – I havemy very own beautiful satin pink pointe shoes that I am getting the hang of). Toround off my busy life, I am a twin-Mum – with my twin boys turning 21 at theend of June, I am super-busy being super-proud of my children and mypavement special hounds.
