Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time + Reflection

It is rather difficult for us to visualize the concept of the Kingdom of God, sometimes referred to as the reign of God. One of the images that Jesus uses is that of the mustard seed to help us begin to grasp the meaning of the

Kingdom of God. God’s reign begins as a tiny mustard seed in the life of Jesus and grows towards its completion in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Last Weekend ~ As I reflect upon the wonderful events from last weekend as we celebrated the Feast of Saint Boniface, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood of Jesus with great festivity, I am grateful for the many parishioners who so willingly offered their gifts of time and talent. The countless liturgical ministers who are always here creating an inspirational and meaningful liturgical atmosphere for our parish Masses and celebrations —I am grateful! The Pastoral Council and Parish Staff who planned and orchestrated the delightfully delicious fellowship events following all the weekend Masses—I am grateful. To everyone who offered nice words of congratulations, cards and greetings of thanks and encouragement—I am honored by your kindness. May God bless you all!

Saint Boniface Pre-School ~ Our parish Pre-school is now enrolling for the 2015-2016 school year—3 year old: Tuesday/Thursday and 4 year old: Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Special rate for the 3 year old PM class—No tuition until October! Enroll your 3 year old in the afternoon class now. This offer is only good to the first 10 to enroll. Contact Annie Kolesa @ 692-9315.

Eucharistic Adoration Tower (Tabernacle) ~ The interior walls of the Eucharistic Adoration Tower will be painted/decorated as a memorial gift to the parish from Mrs. Carolyn Kuethe in memory of her late husband, Melvin Kuethe, who passed away on April 16, 2015. Join me in remembering Mel in prayer and expressions of gratitude to Carolyn for the memorial gift to Saint Boniface. The original Max Autenrieb painting, which surrounds the Tabernacle, will remain and be incorporated into the finished design. Andy Autenrieb, great-grandson and Brenda Wasser, granddaughter of Max Autenrieb will spearhead the project.

THE Hallway ~ The infamous hallway leading into the clergy vesting room and liturgical minister room has been eliminated! The previously crowded and congested hallway has now given way to a large and more open space for ushers, readers, servers, ministers of Holy Communion and sacristans to prepare and sign in for the various ministries. Thanks to Team Maintenance; Michael Joslyn and Bill Doerr for their efficient and quality work!

Photo Gallery ~ The newly formed photo ministry will meet again on Monday, June 29th @ 7 PM in the Parish Office Conference Room. Anyone who wants to become a photo “shooter” should plan on attending.

Saint Boniface Cemetery 100th Anniversary Mass ~ Be sure to mark your calendars for the 100th Anniversary Mass of Thanksgiving of the establishment of our parish cemetery on Saturday, August 29 @ 4:15 PM. Bishop Paprocki will bless the new shrine of the Pieta and the newer section of the cemetery.

A BONA GRIFFIN THANKS

Refinish Kneelers ~ Is anyone interested in refinishing three wooden kneelers? Two of the three wooden kneelers, which have been in storage, could be used in the Chapel (old church) for funeral mass servers while the other kneeler, which has a privacy screen, could be used for penance services. If anyone is interested in taking upon this kneeler task, let me know! (You will be able to work on them at home.)

MINISTRY MINUTES

Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein

Often when I ask people about the place they go to find peace, the most common answers are nature and church. In Jesus’ time, people were in nature much more than we are in our concrete world. Even our farmers who spend hours and hours in the fields have a machine between themselves and the earth. Therefore, when we need to feel the peace of God’s creation, we have to take time to seek it out. In today’s gospel Jesus tells us that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed that becomes one of the largest of plants (a tree). We hear of the tree of life in Genesis. When I am seeking a place of peace in nature I am drawn to trees, as I think most people are. Trees provide shelter, shade and comfort for us as they do for the other creatures of the earth. I once visited Muir Woods in Northern California. It is an old-growth coastal redwood forest. Recently I found in a prayer book that the author Christine Valters-Paintner had also visited this same place. This is how she described it: “It has a section called Cathedral Grove where the average age of the trees is 500-800 years, and the oldest is more than 1,200 years old and 258 feet tall. Standing in this place, I experience a sense of awe that I have felt in great cathedrals and other sacred spaces.” I experienced this same feeling. It was a feeling of overwhelming peace and of God’s great love for us. In a large growth of trees or near a tree is a good place to meditate on the word of God. Wendell Berry, a poet from Kentucky, suggests that a person bring their Bible out to a beautiful spot under a tree and read the first creation story in Genesis slowly. Each time God says it is good, pause and breathe in that sense of the goodness of creation. Follow this reading with Psalm 104. Read it aloud as a response to the creation story and notice what stirs in you. I would then add, read today’s Gospel (Mark 4:26-34). Remembering that we are God’s harvest and as the tree provides us with shelter, shade, and comfort we too can give this to others. !

St Boniface Catholic Cemetery – Did you know? 501 Frederick St., Edwardsville, IL

Thank you to all who attended the St. Boniface Cemetery Memorial Day Mass this year. Did you know that May 30, 1964 was the first St. Boniface Cemetery Memorial Day Mass (also called a “field mass”). An altar with a large cross was constructed in the center of the cemetery at a cost of $1,500. It was entirely paid for by the St. Boniface Cemetery Ladies Auxiliary who actively sponsored fundraisers to raise money for the cemetery. Also in 1965, the St. Boniface Cemetery Ladies Auxiliary planted seven evergreen yews behind the altar. In 2015, 50 years later, the mature evergreens were removed and new landscaping was added. In 1993 The Edwardsville Knights of Columbus Council 1143 added a new altar to allow the priest to face the people during Holy Mass. These alters are still used today during the annual Memorial Day Mass. Take a few minutes of your day and visit the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

CONGRATULATIONS

A HUGE “Congratulations” to Chrissy Glinn and Andrew Serfas who are both active members of our Teen Choir here at St. Boniface.

Chrissy, a student at Fr. McGivney Catholic High School and daughter of Daniel & Michele Glinn, was selected to perform in Youth Sing Praise!, a musical ensemble of 43 talented teens from across the country to be held at the Outdoor Amphitheatre at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville. The group will present an original musical, “Just Pretend,” on Saturday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. For more information, visit www.youthsingpraise.com.

Andrew, a student at Marquette University and son of Brad & Katie Serfas, was chosen for the second year in a row to serve as one of 21 participants in the College Ministerial Internship Program at Saint Meinrad Seminary & School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Indiana. This is a 6-week summer internship for college-age students. Interns come from throughout the United States to be formed in Benedictine spirituality for ministry in the Catholic Church and taught by monks and faculty of St. Meinrad Archabbey and its Seminary and School of Theology. The interns serve as staff, catechists, and theological reflection group leaders for the “One Bread One Cup” summer liturgical leadership conferences for high school youth that St. Boniface participates in every year.

This is just some of the great things our young adults are doing here at St. Boniface Parish. Congratulations, Chrissy & Andrew! Thank you for letting your light shine & living out the mission of the Church.

Stewardship in Today’s Gospel

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Those words of great insight are in today’s second reading from St. Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. Hymns have been written with that theme at the focal point. It is often quoted and used as a reference point for how we view our faith and the many mysteries of the Church.

We could also parallel Paul’s statement by saying “We walk by hope, and not by sight.” Through Christ’s Crucifixion we believe, we know, that Jesus offered us the possibility and the hope of life everlasting. We live in a world that puts great credibility to what the eye can see. That is why the visual and social media seem to have such a huge impact on people’s lives.

However, as Christians, we also know that the conclusions of the heart are as valid as those of the mind. Yet, this is one of the most difficult aspects of our relationship to God and to one another. Faith implies trust. Without that sense of trust, that feeling of hope, that awareness that there is more to truth than what seems obvious, we cannot pursue discipleship and stewardship the way Jesus has invited us to live. Our faith — our commitment to living as Christians — must pervade everything in our lives, everything we do every day.

Of course, the Parable of the Mustard Seed follows closely that line of thought. Faith, no matter how small or minute, has the capability of producing great results, not because of us, but again because of the Lord. The Kingdom of God, although perhaps small and unnoticeable in the beginning, becomes great and fruitful. It is our faith that nurtures that Kingdom, and it is our lives of stewardship that can produce incredible harvests.

Vacation Bible School July 20-24

Children who will be in grades K-5 this fall are encouraged to have a fun filled week at SonSparks Lab VBS. The fun begins each morning at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12 noon in the church. We’ll learn about God’s love through bible stories, songs, games and some really cool science experiments!! Snacks are provided each day. Cost for parishioners is $20 per child and $25 per child for non-parishioners. We are looking for volunteers, both adult and young people who are interested in helping with VBS. (This is a great opportunity for Confirmation service hours for our 8th graders!) For more information or to volunteer please email Barbara Stamer at [email protected]. Deadline for registration is July 13 by mail or drop off at the parish office. Registration forms are available on the parish web site or at the parish office.

Daughters of Isabella

The Daughters of Isabella, O’Reilly Circle 218, will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 7132 Marine Road, Edwardsville. We will discuss plans to assist with the upcoming St. Boniface Rummage Sale to be held on July 24 and 25. Volunteers are needed to sort items the week before the rummage sale and to check-out and assist customers during the sale.
