five-day event from February 20 to 24.

"It was great over the five days," said John O'Shea, "we went to Scartaglin on Wednesday night, visited

the schools during the day and everything went according to plan."

"We were happy with the crowds that attended; things have changed but we were very happy with what we got and have no complaints on that score," continued John. 'We

had story-telling this year for the first time and that was huge. Ray O'Sullivan and Eddie Lenihan were excellent."

Minster for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht

Jimmy Deenihan visited the festival on Saturday to witness the extensive programme

of events on offer.

"The Minister saw firsthand what was going on

and we were delighted that he took time from his very busy programme to said John, "he saw the

workshops in action and was impressed with what he saw. We are grateful to our sponsors Killarney

Credit Union, Kate Kennelly in the Kerry Arts Office, Killarney Town Council and IMRO."

Next year will be the 15th anniversary of the very first festival and

Bell X1, Little Mix, Ke$ha for Marquee Four more acts were announced

for the Live At The Marquee gigs this week with girl band Little Mix, rapper and songwriter Ke$ha, Irish rockabilly star Imelda May and rock group Bell XI.

The announcement took place this week at the launch for the ninth year of the summer series of gigs. Peter Aiken of Aiken Promotions

spoke at the launch and he was joined by three members of Bell XL

Mr Aiken said that few festivals make it to a ninth year and that the festival would definitely be around for ten years, with special

plans for next year, which he would not divulge.

"People have embraced the Marquee and it's done well. It's a diverse line up, there's something for everyone,"

he said. He said that he would

have liked a metal act but it wasn't possible. "You never get everyone you want, but I'm happy with the lineup." He added that the festival was something of a Cork success story, with some acts selling much more tickets here than they have in Dublin.

This year Sting, Elvis Costello, ZZ Top, The Wanted, The Boomtown

Rats and The National appear at the Marquee for the

first time while Elton John, The Coronas, Christy Moore and Oily Murs make returns to play the

summer venue. Live At The Marquee

Cork was also a winner at the recent 2012 IMRO Awards.

Little Mix takes place on 14 June and tickets are €33.50, Ke$ha plays on 3 July and tickets are €39.05. Bell XI is on 4 July with tickets at €33.50 and Imelda

May is set to play on 9 July with tickets priced at €35.

Ke$ha will play the Marquee.

McGrory's Neil talks craic agus ceoil

Culdaff rocks! NEIL McGrory has

literally written the book on Inishowen.

A Culdaff man born and bred, and a McGrory of McGrory's Bar fame, Neil is proud of his peninsula, so much so he published a beautiful

guide book for visitors to the area.

It is through the music industry, not the publishing

industry, that Neil and his family have put their village on the map, though.

First opened as a store by his grandparents John and Minnie McGrory in 1924, and then converted to a hotel, the premises developed as a bar in the 1950s. Later run by his parents John and Deirdre, the McGrory clan have certainly cememented their legacy in Culdaff with the 17-room establishment

now run by Neil, his sister Anne and brother John.

Having won the IMRO (Irish Music Rights Association) Best Live Venue in Ulster in both 2011 and 2012, McGrory's

Backroom Bar was opened 20 years ago this year, and has helped establish the Inishowen village as a musical hub on the national stage.

"There's a great tradition of music here in Culdaff," said Neil. "If you go back to the time when they had the marquee

at the Culdaff Arms a lot of great bands would've come to play, such as Thin Lizzy and the Horseslips."

The 47-year-old said it was out of that environment that he and his brother John developed

their deep love of all things musical: "The younger people would've seen all the bands playing, there was always

a lot of bands and musicians about. Myself and John

started playing when we were younger, and then we had a recording studio here for years."

The brothers - who are still very much involved with music - also played in a few bands themselves, with Neil on the bass and John on the guitar, such as Thirty-Third Hurricane with Finbarr Doherty

(Saddler) and Soul Aim. "We were playing soul music here in Culdaff before The Commitments," joked Neil.

Father-of-two Neil said the idea for the Backroom Bar "came about sort of by default."

Having already established their recording studio

- which has been used by some big names of over the years such as the BBC and

Brian Kennedy, who recorded an album there - they already had a lot of musicians playing around the bar.

"One of our first big gigs was Altan," recalls Neil. "And then we had Goats Don't Shave down, and they recorded the original 'Hills of Donegal' here."

Over the past two decades since, the Backroom Bar has attracted some legendary names from the world of country,

rock and traditional Irish music. From international acts such as Rodney Crowell, Guy Clarke and Townes Van Zandt, John Martin, and Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac, to Irish bands such as the Horseslips, Duke Special, Damien Dempsey,

Paul Brady and Altan, the Backroom has been "the place to be" for many artists.

Countless photographs of the various musicians who have enjoyed a night in the

bar grace the walls of the front bar, and with a cosy open fire, Irish music pumping from the speakers, and tourists mingling

around the lobby, it's easy to see the attraction of McGrory's.

With sessions on every Friday night all year around, and

also on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays during the summer,

the bar attracts a lot of international interest. Neil said: "We have a good reputation

for live music, and we get a lot of musicians coming to the bar from all over. We get a lot of tourists coming through who stop in for a session, the visitors have a huge interest in it."

And while Neil said the "scene" has changed somewhat

since "the Fruit of the Loom era" the business is changing with the times and continuing to put Culdaff on the musical map. "We like

to think the place has given Culdaff a good profile nationally,"

said Neil. "It promotes Culdaff when the place is mentioned in listings and on band tour itineraries and so on. Culdaff's name regularly crops up along with the likes of Dublin and Galway etc."

It's not just for music the bar is famous, either, having been entered into the McKenna

Bridgestone guide for a number of years now, for both food and for being in the top 100 places to stay in Ireland.

More than that, the establishment acts as a hub for the

local community, being used by various groups such the local creative writing group, a book club and so on. It has also been used to host the Guitar Festival, which attracted

artists from all over the world, and for the Charles Macklin Festival.

When he speaks of such

groups and events, Neil glows with pride at the cultural riches which abound in the small Culdaff community. He said: "The Charles Macklin festival is a great event for culture

and literature, and year is one of the few Inishowen events on the City of Culture calendar. It's got a very good programme this year.

"Then there's the Donegal Fleadh, which is on again this year. My wife Roisin Harrigan is heavily involved in it. It was here last year - there were over 500 competitors and ten marching bands - and it's promising to be a big event this year. There's a lot of people

coming." As for Neil's book - entitled

'Inishowen, A Journey Through Its Past Revisted' Neil truly believes that tourism

is the way forward for the peninsula, with such a wealth of attractions and historic

sites. Boasting about the beauty

of Culdaff Beach, he pointed out how it had been getting a lot of attention in the national

press and had recently been included in a list by the Independent in the UK of the top eight beaches in all of Europe.

"Sometimes people abroad would know of Culdaff Beach more than people here at home," said Neil. "You do find that sometimes things in Inishowen are more famous abroad than at home."

He concluded: "There really does seem to be a lot happening

tourism-wise at the moment. From surfing, hill walking, road sports, cycling, to extreme sports, there's always

something happening. You even get the odd person coming to see the Northeren Lights too. Tourism really is looking up in Inishowen."

Delorentos dedicate award to drummer's late mother Eamon Sweeney

DUBLIN band Delorentos scooped the Meteor Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year - and dedicated the award to their drummer's late mother.

Their critically acclaimed album 'Little Sparks' netted the €10,000 prize at a sold-out event in Dublin's Vicar Street.

Delorentos, who beat off competition from contenders including Damien Dempsey and Two Door Cinema Club, dedicated the prize to drummer Ross McCormick's mother, Mary, who recently died.

Delighted Bassist Nial Conlan said: "We are absolutely delighted to be in the company of these artists that we love and respect. The Irish music scene is very strong and it's wonderful to be part of it."

The prize money is provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation and the Irish Recorded Music Association.

The winner of the Meteor Choice Music Prize Irish Song of the Year was also announced. Gavin James won with 'Say Hello', which was picked by the public via text vote and online.

"The judges got it right and recognised that Delorentos had made the best Irish album of 2012," said Irish Independent music critic and former judge John Meagher. Ronan Yourell of Delorentos performs at the Meteor Choice awards in Vicar Street.

Delorentos scoop Album of the Year award

Delorentos, winners at the Meteor Choice Music Prize awards.

THE IRISH Album of the Year has been named as 'Little Sparks' by Fingal band, Delorentos, who received the honour at the prestigious Meteor Choice Music Prize awards last week.

The Meteor Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year was given to the Fingal

outfit at a ceremony in Dublin's Vicar Street on Thursday night.

The band received the honour for their third album, Little Sparks which was released to popular and critical acclaim last year. Delorentos received a cheque for €10,000, a prize which was provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA), as well as a specially-commissioned award for winning Album of the Year.

The band collected the award just

before they jetted off to New York for live dates as their star continues to rise.

Reacting to the award, the band said: We're very proud, humbled and happy to have won the Meteor Choice Music Prize for Irish album of the Year.

"We had an amazing night, great fun with all the other acts. We can't believe it. Thank you to everyone, we're delighted.'

Nine of the 10 shortlisted acts Delorentos, Wallis Bird, The Cast of Cheers, Adrian Crowley, Damien Dempsey, Julie Feeney, Heathers, Mumblin

Deaf Ro and Windings - performed at the awards show on Thursday night.

Former winners, Two Door Cinema Club, who were also nominated, were unable to play the event because of touring commitments.

Delorentos sparkle to win top prize

'Little Sparks', critically acclaimed third album, wins €10,000 prize for Dublin band

Singer-songwriter Gavin James wins Irish Song of the Year for his tune 'Say Hello'

KEVIN COURTNEY

Dublin band Delorentos have won the Meteor Choice Music Award for album of the year 2012. The band's highly-rated third album, Little Sparks, has scooped the €10,000 prize, beating albums by The Cast of Cheers, Damien Dempsey, Two Door Cinema Club and Julie Feeney.

The Meteor Choice Music Prize was held last night in Dub-

lin's Vicar Street, where nine of the 10 nominees performed, including

sisterly duo Heathers, Limerick band Windings and Wicklow singer-songwriter Wallis Bird. Belfast band Two Door Cinema Club, whose second

album, Beacon, was nominated, were unable to appear

due to touring commitments. While the acts performed onstage,

an 11-strong judging panel of rock cognoscenti, chaired

by Irish Times music journalist

Tony Clayton-Lea, went into conclave to choose the winning album, as a sell-out crowd of avid music fans waited for the white smoke to appear. The event was compered by Today FM DJ Paul McLoone and broadcast live on the station.

Three of the nominated acts, Two Door Cinema Club, Feeney and Crowley, were past winners. Jape are the only act to have won the prize twice.

Delorentos were favourites to win, thanks to the huge acclaim

for their album. Their prize was jointly provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation

and the Irish Recorded Music Association. The band also

received an award to put on their mantelpiece.

Delorentos formed in Dublin in 2005, and have since built up a loyal fanbase and critical ku¬

dos. Their debut album, In Love With Detail, was nominated for the Choice Music Prize in 2007. Many critics have lauded their current album as their best.

Dublin singer-songwriter Gavin James won Irish Song of the Year for his tune, Say Hello. Other nominees included songs by The Coronas, Glen Hansard, Kodaline, Le Galaxie featuring Elaine Mai, The Script and Villagers.

The Irish Song of the Year was chosen by the public, who voted by text and via the Meteor F acebook page.

This was the eighth Meteor Choice Music Prize, established

"to encourage, highlight, showcase and promote Irish music of excellence".

The nominated albums are not judged on how many copies sold, but purely on musical excellence.

It began modestly enough as the Choice Music Prize, before Meteor came in as sponsors in 2011.

The awards have been criticised for some bizarre choices,

most notably the 2007 winner, Super Extra Bonus Party, and this year's contest drew fire for its "bland" mix of unremarkable

indie albums and uninspiring singer-songwriter fare. If anything,

this year's Meteor Choice Music Prize highlights the need for more Irish artists to venture outside the cosy confines

of the local music scene.

Dingle band in Furey's Bar

WALKING on Cars are set to release their first single 'Catch Me If You Can' on Friday 14 March and before that on March 9 (Saturday night) they will be in action in Furey's Bar, Bridge Street, Sligo.

The band won the Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012, which awarded them the opportunity to record with producer Tom McFall (Snow Patrol, Bloc Party, Editors) in

Grouse Lodge Studios. 'Catch Me If You Can'

is the first single to be taken from that recording

and will be included on their much anticipated

and stunningly beautiful EP due for release

this summer. Since their formation

just 12 months ago, Walking on Cars have toured across the country

with workmanlike dedication to their craft, developing their passion

for playing live with standout performances at several festivals, including

the Sea Sessions in Bundoran.

With the completion of their debut EP, some high profile performances

(including Other Voices IMRO Other Room) and the recent inclusion of their music on The Voice of Ireland television show, they are being tipped for big things in 2013.

From the Dingle Peninsula, the five musicians

first grew to know each other from a shared interest in surfing.

This friendship soon gave way to a tuneful collaboration, borne out of a desire to write music. With songs reflecting

both the isolation and consolation of

Dingle, this year Walking On Cars look set to

add to their increasing number of admirers.

WHATS IN A NAME?: Walking On Cars, walking on a car.

Filmmakers and composers collaborate in Irish project Following the success of previous collaborative film-scoring workshops, the Irish Music Rights

Organisation (IMRO) and the RTK Concert Orchestra, in association with Filmbase, The Contemporary Music Centre and Screen Training Ireland will bring together the very best emerging Irish filmmakers

and composers to work on an exciting collaborative project. The focus of the project is a one-day recording session in RTE studios. This will involve the RTE Concert

Orchestra performing and recording original scores for up to four short film submissions received from student and professional Irish filmmakers.

Submitted film projects for the scheme require original scored music totaling between three and five minutes. Ideally the film should have a maximum duration of 10 -12 minutes and should be close to or have completed picture lock.

Once selected, the filmmakers will work with a composer, who has been selected through the process, and who will create a score for the film to be performed and recorded by the RTE Concert Orchestra.

This initiative will provide emerging filmmakers and composers with a valuable opportunity to enhance their skills with hands-on experience in a vital aspect of film post-production. It is also a rare opportunity to have a score composed for full orchestra.

Filmmakers are invited to submit a short film or film excerpt from a longer project (e.g. pilot) for which the selected composers will create up to three to five minutes of original score.

All categories of film will be accepted, such as live-action drama, animation, documentary, experimental, etc.

Ideally, the film projects submitted should be close to completion on editing, but un-sound edited/mixed. The use of temp tracks or mood music where score is required is allowed but not required. The closing date for submissions is 15th April.

Financial boost for Riverbank By Vicki Weller A SIGNIFICANT financial boost for the Riverbank

Arts Centre in Newbridge was announced in the past week by the Arts Council,

which is providing a grant of €57,000 to the centre this year.

The centre, which hosts exhibitions and workshops of various sorts, as well as staging drama, comedy and musical performances, was described by the arts council as having "a proven track record of delivering great arts experiences for people all over the Kildare and beyond".

The Newbridge centre has been building

an impressive reputation for the quality of its stage shows over the past few years and it was recently shortlisted for the Best Live Music Venue award in the annual entertainment awards ceremony organised by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO).

The latest funding from the arts council was welcomed by centre manager Linda Geraghty who said that continued support was vital to enable the facility to keep serving local audiences.

"We run a huge variety of events, performances and workshops and the aim is to offer something to all sections of the community and all age groups," she said,

noting that the centre is a "not for profit" organisation, with revenues all going straight back into the programme and the venue itself.

Ms Geraghty added that support from the Arts Council each year is based on a submission from the centre, outlining activities and plans.

The Arts Council also provides funding for touring, projects and bursaries for talented artists throughout the year.

Despite cutbacks in government funding for arts as a result of the recession, the council has continued to focus on what chairperson Pat Moylan described as "the social dividend" to be derived from supporting the arts. Gran
