Perspective…
A perspective is a particular way of thinking about something and is
influenced by our experiences and beliefs. The word perspective has a
Latin root meaning to “look through” or “perceive”. We all have a
viewpoint or an angle in which we look at something. I view colder
weather as a challenge because I am a walker, so I need to don more
layers to care for my body by wearing different attire for my walks.
As we view the panorama of the present landscape in our world and our
present circumstances from our own frame of reference, our responses
reflect who we are. Crisis doesn’t create character, but it does reveal our
character.
John Maxwell said, “Talent is a gift, but character is a choice”. In Genesis
50, Joseph’s perspective and character, built over many years, prompted
him to make the choice to use his power to bless his brothers after they
had wronged him many years before. This response was not expected
and certainly not the norm in society. Adversity is a crossroad that
makes a person choose character or compromise.
From my perspective or vantage point, our Team at Friendship
Community is truly demonstrating character as we seek broader
understanding of situations so that we respond from a deeper place
within us. We are learning from each other and collaborating to make
wise thoughtful decisions. Individuals, Team Members and Families are
communicating and striving for the best outcomes to situations that
arise. Despite the challenges imposed upon us, we are creating positive
environments daily in which to live, work, learn and grow. We are taking
time to interpret situations in order to choose how to respond. What I
see is the demonstration of integrity, self-sacrifice, accountability,
loyalty, courage and fortitude! This type of character demonstration and
such wise choices of actions inspires each of us to do the same
repeatedly. The journey of life is a marathon and we need each other.
In this unusual time in history, what is your perspective? How are you
responding? What actions are you choosing to take? Are they inspiring
others or discouraging those in your sphere of influence?

This past October, Craig, an Individual supportedby Friendship Community, reached a veryspecial milestone in his life - his 30th anniversaryof working at Zook Molasses Company!
For anyone that knows Craig, they're notsurprised of this highlight. "Where there's loveand kindness, food and people, Craig is happy."said his Mom, Gladys. Craig is clearly happy atwork. "He's always been a worker," Gladys added,"but he's gotten so much more out of this job..."[referring to both the friendships he's made andhis heightened sense of accomplishment andpride]. "Once," she shared, "it was Craig'sbirthday, and his co-workers got together andbought him a cake to celebrate. He was sohappy."
Craig works part-time Tuesday through Friday. He has had a number of roles at Zook MolassesCompany, including packing Auntie Anne's pretzel dough mix in boxes. Currently, Craigoperates a lift to stack packed boxes on various pallets. Craig became involved with thecompany thirty years ago through a beloved Uncle.
On his days off, you can often find Craig sitting out on the patio (or looking out the windowwhen the weather isn't nice) watching the traffic drive by his home. Craig is a big fan of trucks -the bigger the truck (and horn!) the better.
Favorite Food: cheeseburgers and banana splits Favorite Team: E-A-G-L-E-S! Favorite Color: blue Favorite Past-time: making deliveries with his Dad in their truck
Hidden Talents: Team Members report Craig as being very tech savvy, specifically in searchingfor videos on his iPad. Craig is also very compassionate, especially towards his housemates, and always smiling. His smile can easily light up a room and lift people's spirits!
To Spend or To Save? Craig is not a big spender. In fact, one of his favorite things to do is go tothe bank and deposit his paycheck! He loves to save! Great job, Craig!

Earlier in this edition, Gwen asked how are youresponding? For me and my immediate family - myhusband, our son and our two dogs - we've gottenon each other's last nerve during these past fewmonths! We're trying to work and do school fromhome. Our summer beach vacation we sodesperately needed got cancelled, like many ofyours. We also missed birthday parties and friendsgetting married, like you did. But, with that beingsaid, we still had a pretty amazing couple of months. We thoroughly (!) cleaned our house to adapt fornew work spaces. We accepted the great outdoorsand became familiar with new hiking trailsthroughout Lancaster County. We got even closer tofamily members and friends through scheduledweekly video calls.
you were a child and school was cancelled becauseof a snow day? Do you recall how excited you were
to go build a snowman or have a snowball fight?Perhaps you weren't a fan of the snow, and spent yourday off in your pajamas coloring a picture or playing a
game. Ready to relive those days of happiness?
This edition of the Journey features a coloring page forthose young and young at heart! Once you've finished

On a dreary day in September, runners andwalkers alike descended on FriendshipCommunity's main office campus ready to race. While this year's FEST was cancelled due to thepandemic, we were thrilled to still be able to holdthe 5K and we excitedly hosted a record numberof registered participants!
After opening remarks, participants lined up at thestart. Doran, an Individual supported by FriendshipCommunity and pot holder-maker extraordinaire, gave the green light and people were off! The racecourse took participants behind Oregon Dairy inthe first mile, then over to Landis Communities forthe second mile before returning back toFriendship Community for the final mile. Acheering section, a water stop and inspirational(and humorous!) signs encouraged runners andwalkers to finish strong while having fun.
Tim Getz (Lancaster) took first place overall with atime of seventeen minutes, thirty seconds. AllisonPorter (Bethel) was the first female to cross thefinish line with a time of twenty-two minutes,twenty-one seconds. Cash prizes were given to thefirst three male and female runners; medals weredistributed for age group winners.
The 5K is just one of many fundraising events wehold each year. Proceeds from these eventssignificantly and directly effect the Individualssupported by Friendship Community. Thank youfor helping us to continue our vital work every dayto Impact the World with Capabilities.
