The fee is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Please bring your license and AARP membership card with you to the class. This class is open to anyone.

Empire Safety Defensive DrivingSaturday, February 3, 9:30 AM - 3:30 PMThere is a $28 fee, payable by check only to Empire Safety Council for this six-hour class. In-person registration at the Reference Desk is required.

Chinese Cooking for Chinese New YearThursday, February 15, 7:00 PMCookbook author Penn Hongthong will demonstrate how to make simple and healthy Chinese cooking just in time for the New Year. Learn how to make vegetable fried rice, shrimp with vegetables, and chow fun with beef and noodles. There is a $5 fee, payable at the Reference Desk, which includes the recipes and tastings.

2018 Chinese New Year will celebrate a Year of Earth Dog which was also in 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006. It is an opportunity for the Dog to consolidate your achievements and to renew your motivation. Happiness is at the door of the Dog, you only need to reach out to grasp it. It is your year for love, marriage, career, money and luck.

Beginner BridgeSpring SessionFridays, March 2, through April 27 (no class on 3/30)10:30 AM - 12:30 PMIf you are new to Bridge, instructor Susan Fishbein will teach you the fundamentals of Bridge in this eight-week series. There is a $40 fee payable upon registration at the Reference Desk. You are required to purchase Bidding in the 21st Century by the American Contract Bridge League before the first class. Local artist Catherine Olsen’s watercolor and oil paintings are impressionistic in style. Her subject matter is varied and includes seascapes, landscapes and still life. She has exhib-ited in numerous Long Island art galleries and is a member of the Art League of Long Island and the Suburban Art League.

(Please note, the Library opens at 10 AM on Fridays.)AARP Tax-Aide is a free tax counseling and preparation service,  helping low-and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older.  AARP Tax-Aide volunteers cannot prepare returns that include rental property, military income, alternative minimum tax, or those with many stock transactions.

Please note that some tax information, especially from brokerage firms, may not be sent until the end of February. AARP Tax-Aide is administered by the AARP Foundation, in cooperation with the IRS.  Electronic filing (e*filing) is included.  Taxpayers who e*file receive refunds more rapidly.  Please bring your current tax records and copies of your last filed federal and state tax returns.  We also have a complete checklist of all the items you should bring.  If it is to be a joint tax return both people must be present and must bring a photo ID and a Social Security card or another form of Social Security verification.  Harborfields Library Cardholders may call the Reference Desk for an appointment.

Meet new friends, enjoy coffee, tea and dessert, watch mini demonstrations and take a chance on our raffles while helping to bring comfort and make a difference in the life of a woman affected by heart disease. Scarf patterns and assistance will be available. Donations of machine-washable red worsted weight yarn would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to cre-ate a red scarf before the event, it should be four to five inches wide and fifty-two inches long. Finished scarves and yarn may be placed in the bin in the Library Lobby. If you have any questions about your medical eligibility, call Long Island Blood Services at 1-800-688-0900. Please be sure to eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids. January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018 Annual Meeting, Trustee Election and Budget Vote

Tuesday, April 10, 2018, 3:00 - 9:00 PMThe Annual Meeting of the Harborfields Public

Library will be held on Tuesday, April 10 at 2:30 PM in the Library. The Budget Vote and Trustee Election will be held immediately following from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

Absentee ballot applications are available at the Harborfields Public Library Reference Desk on or after February 9, 2018. Such applications must be received by the Library Director at least seven (7) days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. Upon approval of the application, an absentee ballot will be issued. All absentee ballots must be received at the Library by 5 PM on the day of the election in order to be counted. Persons designated by the Suffolk County Board of Elections as “permanently disabled” pursuant to provi-sions of the election law will automatically receive an absentee ballot and need not apply. The Library’s Budget Information Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 7:00 PM at the Library.

In addition to the vote on the proposed operating budget, there will be an election for the position on the Library Board of Trustees presently held by Jenny Shore. This position has a five-year term of office, expiring on June 30th, 2023.

In order to run for election for this position, these procedures must be followed:

1. Candidates for the trustee positions must be residents of the Harborfields School District and may only be nominated by petition, which shall be directed to the Clerk of the School District.

2. Petitions must be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the School District and shall state the resi-dence of each signer, as well as the name and resi-dence of the candidate.

3. The petition must describe the specific vacancy on the Library Board for which the candidate is seeking nomination, including the length of the term of office and the name of the last incumbent.

4. Each petition shall be filed with the Clerk of the School District no later than 5:00 PM on Mon-day, March 12, 2018. Forms for the petition may be obtained at the Harborfields Public Library Reference Desk, beginning Friday, February 9, 2018.
