What is Ministry Days?Ministry Days is the largest gathering of ministers, catechists and Catholic school teachers in the Diocese of Sacramento. In the Footsteps of the Beloved DiscipleFrom disciple to apostle, the beloved disciple took the words of Jesus to heart. We, too, are God’s beloved and called to be disciples of Jesus. In scripture, we find the Beloved Disciple in close relationship with Christ; reclining next to Jesus, with the Blessed Mother at the foot of the cross, and being the first to recognize the Lord after the resurrection. Jesus accompanies us as we are called to accompany each other in our lives of faith. In the Spirit of the upcoming 2018 Bishop’s synod, we invite you to join us for Ministry Days 2018 as we reflect on the beloved disciple as a model for our own discipleship. See you there!¿Por qué participar en la Jornada Pastoral?

A-03Can You Hear Me Now: Strengthening the Spiritual and Prayer Lives of Middle SchoolersLindsey WestHave you ever tried getting middle schoolers to pray only to have at least one student that doesn’t know what’s going on, a couple students that mock the prayer, and many students that couldn’t care less? Whether you’re a youth minister, teacher, DRE, or play some other role in the faith lives of middle schoolers, it’s possible to lead middle schoolers deeper than most people imagine. In this session we will discuss and practice techniques, styles, and approaches to helping middle schoolers develop and deepen maturing spiritual and prayer lives. Get ready to think, work, and share ideas you can bring back to your parish or school.

A-04Walking Along a Life Long Journey: Creative Steps and SuppliesSue SchuttingerWe travel along a life long journey of continuing conversion and growth in faith but we do not walk alone. Come and join others and experience practical, creative ideas and activities to engage children, young adults and parents. No need to bring back packs, hiking shoes, or even pens and pencils. A-07Powerful Prayer Experiences for TeensAaron Del MonteMany young people want to improve their prayer lives, but don’t know where to start. We will help you create meaningful prayer experiences for groups of teens, and will provide you with information young people can use to improve their individual daily prayer experiences. A variety of ideas will be provided, with an emphasis on using popular music as a powerful tool to draw young people into prayer and reflection. This workshop is also offered on Saturday at 11:15am as C-09.

A-08Social Savvy 101: A Jr High/High School Leaders Guide to Using Social Media the Right WaySherry Hayes-PeirceThis session wil l focus on sharing best

practices for using social media. We will review how important it is to craft an appropriate image on social media explore the consequences when you don’t. The course will help students and teachers understand the relevance and importance of social media as a communication tool in framing who they are and how it can be interpreted by others. Attendees will be able to form a personal standard of conduct on social media that frames them as a person not just a profile for popularity!

A-09The “Joy of Love” in a Culture of “Like”Andrew BrownTeenagers “like” everything these days. Yet all those ‘likes’ can’t add up to a fulfillment of authentic love. Do young people know that God has been proposing to us since the beginning of time? How do we invite teenagers to “taste and see” God’s love on earth? Do teenagers know we are an echo of God’s love? Do teens understand the depth of being made in “God’s Image and Likeness”? Perhaps we have a vocation crisis because we have a “love crisis”. In Amoris Laetitia, “Joy of Love”, Pope Francis provides insights, challenges, and opportunities for us to uncover the deepest longing of the human heart. This workshop will equip leaders to respond with charity and clarity to empower the youth to see their dignity, worth, and how to radiate that love in world of “like”.

A-10A Better Way to Teach Respect for LifeLaura OlivaOur culture is filled with offenses against the inherent dignity of the human person. From abortion to the death penalty, Catholics face the daily challenge of sharing the church’s teaching on respect life issues in ways that bring about true and lasting conversion. This workshop will teach attendees how to permanently change hearts and minds on the life issues by approaching these topics through reason and logic. They will learn 10 key principles, how to apply them to any moral issue, and receive a free tool to help them share what they have learned with their parish, school, or family.

A-12Christifideles Laici: The Lay Faithful and their Secular CharacterErrol KissingerIn the footsteps of the Beloved Disciple, the layperson is called to transform secular society through living the faith in all aspects of life: in the family, socially and recreationally, in one’s occupation, etc. This workshop will examine the Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles Laici, which summarizes the work of the 1987 Synod on “The Vocation and the Mission of the Lay Faithful in the Church and in the World” as a detailed attempt to present a better theological framework for the role of the laity in the secular realm. This workshop is also offered on Friday at 11:15am as C-15.

A-13A Biblical Walk through the MassJames CavanaghFrom the outward and visible signs to the invisible spiritual realities underlying them, sacred scripture is the key that unlocks the Mass. At the same time, the Mass is vital for understanding Scripture. In this talk we will explore the fascinating connection between the sacred liturgy and sacred scripture.

A-14Sports MinistryStephen MorrisYouth ministry programs and parish catechesis are distant priorities behind a young person’s love for sports - so how can we minister in sports? Coaches are one of the “top 3 most influential people” in a young person’s life, so how can they evangelize and share the good news in between practice drills and games. Athletics dominates youth culture and the family, let’s stop waiting at the parish for young people to show up and go to where they are. This workshop is also offered on Friday at 2:30pm as B-08 and Saturday at 2:30pm as D-08.

A-16Building BridgesDarcy WhartonIn every school or parish, there are people who feel alienated or forgotten. B-06The First Call: Baptism Leads to Discipleship Rose HernandezAnyone who helps in preparation for a sacrament knows the difficulty of creating programs and processes that are effective preparation. What if we looked at sacramental preparation in a different light: as a call to conversion and encounter, rather than a list of things to be learned? What would our programs look like if we focused on discipleship and apprenticeship, calling people to know Christ as his disciples did, and experience God’s grace. We will explore ways to begin transforming sacramental preparation into an encounter with Jesus.

B-07Catholic Scouting Awards in Religious EducationJon KantolaThe primary purpose of Scouting award programs is to provide an opportunity to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each youth participating in the programs. Emphasis is placed on faith development within the young person. These programs afford unique study experiences that help relate the Christian faith to the life of the Scout. Each of the emblem programs reinforces the religious education programs of the parish, complementing existing programs by reaching out to the more general needs and interests of all youth. This workshop is also offered on Saturday at 2:30pm as D-04.

B-08Sports MinistryStephen MorrisThis workshop is also offered on Friday at 11:15am as A-14 and Saturday at 2:30pm as D-08. Please refer to Session A-14 for a full description.

B-09Confession from Priestly PerspectiveFr Mitch MaleszykTo present the sacrament of reconciliation from priest’s side and have discussion about meaning, feelings and show that what matters for people do not matter for priest. Give motivation to use and promote this sacrament. Remind people about confession as a place of love and mercy, not punishment.

B-10Come to the Well Christine JurisichBeing a Catholic school teacher is like no other profession. Every moment of every day you have the honor and pressure of shaping the hearts and souls of your students to love Jesus and follow the Catholic faith. Are you finding ways to nurture your own faith in order to show the face of a loving God that inspires your students? This workshop will give you some time for renewal and inspire you to find new ways to grow in faith.

B-11Reading Scripture Like a CatholicJames WykesReading Scripture is a daunting task - and understanding it can be even harder! Thankfully, the Church has, in its two thousand years on the earth, produced a bounty of theologians to help us navigate the thorny thicket of biblical interpretation. In this workshop, I discuss basic distinctions that can be kept in mind when reading and explaining Scripture and tackle some of the most common questions students have about it.

B-12Liturgy and the Sacred ArtsLawrence KlimeckiScripture tells us to “Worship the Lord in the Beauty of His Holiness.” We are a liturgical people; we are made to offer worship to God who is all Beauty. The sacred arts of architecture, music and art, play a vital role in celebrating a liturgy that is not only beautiful and reverent, but also aids in turning the hearts and minds of the faithful to contemplation of the Divine. In this workshop Deacon Lawrence Klimecki will give an overview of the importance of beauty in our worship and the role the sacred arts play in contributing to this beauty. Drawing on Scripture, Magisterial Teaching, and Tradition, Deacon Lawrence will offer guidelines for incorporating beauty in our liturgical celebrations that help to bring about a fuller understanding of our nature as a liturgical people.

B-13Less Talk More WalkRhyan Ramirez“Forget what you say, watch what you do” has always been a saying that has kept me in check. Our words have no impact, value or influence if we aren’t waking the talk. This workshop will explore the many ways we can walk side by side with our students, teens, young adults, parents and ministries teams. This will create deeper connection with those we serve and those we serve with so that we can carry out Jesus’ mission to make disciples of all nations.

B-14Engaging In Global Solidarity: Resources for the Classroom and CommunityKen PrestonThis workshop will help you to deepen your student’s engagement in global solidarity as a response to God’s mercy. Participants will learn about US Church’s efforts for Global Solidarity overseas, effective resources (curriculum, videos, websites) for classroom engagement at home, and hands-on practical examples of engaging students.

Data from Pew Research, CARA, and the National Study on Youth and Religion all suggest that young people are disaffiliating from the Church in large numbers. Some studies suggest that as many as 50% of Millennials describe themselves as “none” when asked about religious affiliation. In this workshop, we’ll explore what the data is actually suggesting, and, more importantly, how the Church might respond to the changing mindsets of youth and young adults.

D-10Mass Incarceration: Why Should Catholics CareCharlene HarrisCriminal justice systems in the United States are in crisis. The United States has the highest incarceration rates of any country in the world. More than 2.3 million Americans are in state and federal prisons. For African Americans, the numbers reflect a more frightening situation, with one in 15 African American males over 18 years of age behind bars, compared to one out of 36 Latinos and one out of 106 white males. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan officially announced the “War on Drugs.” Misguided drug laws and draconian sentencing requirements have produced profoundly unequal outcomes for communities of color. Catholic Social Teaching, Human Life and Dignity, remind us that every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. This is why Catholics should care.

D-11Getting to Know Your new NeighborGenevieve LevyI will give a comprehensive overview of the refugee resettlement process in the United States and work that is being done locally in the Diocese of Sacramento. Additionally, I hope to present or invite our Managing Attorney of Immigration Legal Services to review what being a “sanctuary” site really means and what churches and schools can do if ever visited by ICE agents. This can also cover an overview of recent immigration policies and answer concerns/questions.

D-13Unbound Model; Five Keys to Healing and DeliveranceLoree LippsmeyerI will give a brief description of what deliverance prayer is and introduce Unbound deliverance prayer specifically. I will cover the 5 Keys of Unbound in detail and share my own experience with Unbound prayer.

D-14Being CalledDcn Jim McFaddenVocation is not something we choose. To be called is to be chosen which occurs within a context of an I-thou relationship with God. The clearest indication that we have experienced this chosen relationship of being beloved is the desire to give back, to share what has been given to us in abundance. When that happens, discipleship begins.

D-15Engaging the Parish with Engaged Couples preparing for the Sacrament of MatrimonyAndrew BrownImagine if Pope Francis was leading the parish Marriage prep Ministry. What would it look like? What would he say? In Amoris Laetitia (Joy of Love) the Holy Father gives specific & descriptive ways to evangelize couples preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. Here’s the conclusion: It begins at birth and it doesn’t end on the wedding day! See how the ‘visible sign’ of marriage points to an ‘invisible reality’ God’s perfect love.

D-16Re-imagining Parish Life in the Light of EvangelizationDr. John RinaldoCan we just be honest for a second? Catholic

ministry is not forming intentional disciples in the way we hoped it would. More than a decade of research bares this truth out. Evangelization calls us to reach out to the unchurched and engage them in the life of Christ. Small tweaks and changes are not enough to have the impact that we are hoping for. We must reimagine and restructure our model of ministry. If you’re ready to change the way you do ministry, then this session is for you.

D-17Youth Ministry Fundamentals 102Lindsey WestThis workshop is a continuation of the morning workshop (C-18) on best practices in youth ministry. We will do a quick recap of the vision for comprehensive youth ministry from the morning session and then dive into hands-on training in best practices for giving dynamic talks and facilitating effective and meaningful small groups.
