The expectation at D.W. Poppy is that all teachers will be communicating to parents the current progress of all their students at some point during the week. Please note that the interim reporting period is an informal reporting period; therefore, individual teachers will be communicating student progress to parents in a variety of different ways. Due to current FOIPPA concerns, teachers are not able to email progress reports home to parents. This means that all interim reports will be provided through the following ways: Printed progress reports to students in class Student self-assessments or feedback forms in class Updated progress reports on a teacher’s website or MyEDBC Phone calls home to parents Please be aware that the current progress of students is only based on a few weeks of learning and classroom work. Therefore, the information teachers provide next week is only a very small snap shot of a student’s learning. As well, as a school, we are working on using assessment practices that focus on providing students with effective feedback, not marks or grades, to help them improve their learning. Therefore, at this interim period, some teachers will not be providing a letter grade, as they will not have collected enough assessment data to provide an accurate letter grade at this time. The expectation for teachers is that they will have communicated your child’s progress to you and/or your child by Friday October 13 at the very latest. Teachers will also be providing counselors and administration with information on any struggling students for follow-up. If you and/or your son/daughter have not received any progress reports from a teacher by the end of next week, please contact the teacher directly or contact the appropriate Vice-Principal. Terry Fox Run/Colour Day

Last Thursday, September 28, D.W. Poppy held their annual Terry Fox Run/Colour Day! It was a fabulous day weather wise for the Run/Walk and our student body and staff showed great school spirit as evidenced by the high participation rate of each grade wearing their school colours! Prior to our Terry Fox Run/Walk, we held a school wide assembly where we shared some of Terry Fox’s story, and two of our own staff members, Mr. Barry and Mr. Geddert, shared their own personal experiences with cancer in their lives. As a school, we are proud to announce that our student body met their school goal of raising $1500 for the Terry Fox Foundation! This was a significant increase in money raised over the previous few years! Thanks to all of our students and their families, as well as staff, who contributed to the fundraising campaign!

Orange Shirt Day

Friday, September 29 was Orange Shirt Day, a day to remember the survivors of residential schools and those that did not. It is also a day to focus on the idea that Every Child Matters and for our school and community to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. At D.W. Poppy, we commemorated Orange Shirt Day with a school wide assembly. We were very honoured and privileged to have Chief Marilyn Gabriel from the Kwantlen Nation and her husband Kevin Kelly and son and former Poppy Grad, Michael-Kelly Gabriel lead our assembly. Our Kwantlen friends led our students through a traditional First Nations Ceremony and also explained the reasons behind Orange Shirt Day while also sharing some of their own experiences and stories of residential schools. The assembly was also used as a time to repatriate the House Pole that is permanently situated in our main gym. The House Pole was designed and carved 10 years ago this September by Xwalactun. We were fortunate enough to have Xwalactun join us for the ceremony and share his experience carving the pole for our school. Also joining us was one of our Langley School District Aboriginal Support Workers, Pam Goldsack, who was instrumental in making the House Pole a reality ten years ago. Special thanks to our own Aboriginal Support Worker, Sheila Jack, and our Teacher-Librarian, Chris Janzen, for helping organize this important assembly! And a huge thank you to all of our staff and students who wore orange last Thursday to mark this important day.

Pirate Day

On October 4, the Courtyard was filled with eye patches, bandannas and hooks-for-hands as the Grad Class of 2018 welcomed over 170 Grade 8’s to a lunchtime BBQ. This annual event forms a great transition between the incoming Class of 2022 and the outgoing Class of 2018. In addition to their hot dog meal, the Grads kept the Grade 8s busy with a variety of activities: face painting, sword fights, walking-the-plank and bobbing-for-apples were just some of the great activities to keep the Grade 8s busy through their lunch break. The Grad Class of 2018 would like to thank our sponsors: Bonetti Meats, Otter Co-Op and Aldergrove Save On Foods -- We could not have put on this event without you. Your continued and generous support of DW Poppy activities is greatly appreciated!

Aboriginal Canoe Journey

Last Monday, September 25, our Aboriginal Support Worker, Ms. Jack, our Principal, Mr. Kozlovic, Ms. Deanna Miller, Aboriginal Support Worker at Peterson Road, and 12 of our students braved the wet elements to do some paddling and Aboriginal learning on Pitt Lake. While it was a little bit wet for most of the day, the students maintained positive spirits as they battled the current and trying to row together in the large voyageur style canoe. Despite the challenges, the students worked hard, sang Aboriginal songs together, and attempted a war paddle while slowly improving their teamwork and perseverance throughout the day. Kudos to our 12 student paddlers: Caitlin Lueks, Ella Hazelton, Hayley Lavallee, Joshua Jackson, Glen Koks, Cheyenne Joseph, Rebecca Combs, Alexander Barrett, Miranda Koks, Alex Paquette, Keysha Sumners, and Sierra Foulds!

Student Absences

Consistent, daily attendance at school is essential in order for students to be successful in their academics and learning. However, we do know that students may be absent from school due to illness. In the event that your child will be absent from school, we would like to remind parents that it is important to call the main office (604-530-2151) in the morning and report the absence. If this does not occur, the absence will be considered an unexcused absence.

Student Fees

All students attending D.W. Poppy are required to pay a $30 student fee. All other fees are optional except for Grade 12 students who are required to pay a Grad fee. A fee statement was provided to each student in their school opening package that was given to them in their homeroom class on Wednesday, September 6. The Langley School District has moved to an online payment system that allows parents to pay for most school related fees and items online. This year, we are asking all DW Poppy families to pay their school fees using our online KEV Payment system. It is simple to use and only takes a few minutes to set up an account for all of your children, even if they attend multiple schools. To set up an account and get started, please click on the link below: https://www.sd35.bc.ca/students-parents/pay-your-school-feesmake-a-donation/

Issues with Bussing and Transportation

If students are experiencing any issues with district provided school bussing and transportation, please direct your concerns to the Transportation Department at 604-534-5510. REMIND – Important information for Grade 12 students and parents

Grade 12 is an extremely important year for students and their parents. There is a great deal of information that is needed to get to our Grads and the school offers many opportunities for Grads to learn more about scholarships and post-secondary options. To assist with getting this information out to students and parents, D.W. Poppy uses the Remind App, which sends this information directly to students and parents through a simple text message. To sign up for these reminders, simply follow the easy directions below: Text the following message - @dwp2018 To this number – 604-256-5632

REMIND – Important information for Grade 11 students and parents

We are always looking for additional help and would love to have any parents and/or community members who would be able to volunteer their time one morning a week or more. If you are unable to assist by volunteering, the Poppy Bistro will also gladly accept donations of food or money. The entire Poppy Bistro Breakfast Program is funded through donations and community sponsorships so any assistance from our parent community is greatly appreciated. DWP Secondary School’s Parent/Teacher Interview Program

dwp.schoolappointments.com PARENT REGISTRATION

Please go to www.dwp.schoolappointments.com. Parents click on the “Register” tab and fill in the

registration form to create an account. (You may have already created an account previously.) Once

parents have successfully registered, they log in to the system using their new user id and password. Then

they must register each of their children with the “add a student” button.

Bookings start: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7th @ 9:00am

Bookings close: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18th @ 10:00am

Select Teachers

Parents can schedule appointments for any student that they have added to the system by clicking on the

“Parent Teacher Interviews, October 18, 2017” button beside the student’s name. The parent is then taken

to a page where they can select the teachers with whom they wish to meet. Multiple teachers can be

selected by using the “Ctrl” key on a PC keyboard or the “Command” key on a Macintosh keyboard.

Teacher Appointment Calendars

Parents are shown the calendars of the selected teachers. It also shows them appointment times that are

unavailable for booking. Parents can select appointment times by simply clicking the check boxes or by

clicking in the time block beside the check box. Once an appointment time has been selected, it will

change to green. If no appointments are available, click on the “call back” button at the top of the list.

It is not possible for parents to select more than one appointment at the same time or to select more than

one appointment with the same teacher. Javascript enabled browsers are required for validation on the

screen.

Parents with More Than One Student

If a parent has more than one student at the school, the teacher appointment calendars will have an

additional feature displayed when the second (or third, etc.) student bookings are made. If a sibling has an

appointment booked, the student’s name will be displayed for a parent, thus making it easier to book

adjacent appointments.

Appointments Booked Successfully

Once the appointments are booked, the screen will display the list of appointments for the student. When

the parent clicks on the “Return to Home Page” button, they will return to the home page with their students

and their appointments listed. They can book additional appointments, or they can book appointments for

another student.

Printing Parent Appointment Schedule

From the home page it is possible for you to generate a PDF document with the list of your appointments. By

clicking on the “Print Appointments” button, a window will pop up asking the parent what they wish to do

with the document. In Internet Explorer, it is recommended that you click the “Save” button, save the file

and then click “Open” to view the file. Internet Explorer sometimes has a problem downloading and

opening PDF documents that are generated from web sites.

Click “Open” after the download is complete to view the PDF.

Parent Schedule PDF

The generated PDF will list the appointment times, the student and the teacher with whom the appointment

is booked.

Note: If you are having difficulties, please call the school at 604.530.2151.
