Newsflash [email protected] 308-345-5400 www.highplainsradio.net OFFICIALS TO REINSTATE STUDENTS MEDICAID A judge has ordered Nebraska officials to reinstate an Omaha college student's Medicaid coverage. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Judge Susan Strong ruled earlier this week that the Nebraska Health and Human Services Department had unlawfully terminated Azar Webb's coverage when he turned 21 in September 2015. An attorney for Nebraska Appleseed, which sued the department last June, said Webb should have been approved under a Medicaid category added by the Affordable Care Act for those up to age 26 who formerly were in foster care. The state had argued that Webb wasn't eligible because amendments to the state plan had not been approved by the Admini- stration of Children and Families at the time of Webb's administrative hearing. SASSE ISSUES STATEMENT U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse issued a statement after the firing of former FBI Director James Comey: “Regardless of how you think Director Comey handled the unprecedented complexities of the 2016 election cycle, the timing of this firing is very troubling. Jim Comey is an honorable public servant, and in the midst of a crisis of public trust that goes well beyond who you voted for in the presidential election, the loss of an honorable public servant is a loss for the nation. As the chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, I have reached out to the Deputy Attorney General for clarity on his rationale for recommending this ac- tion.” Sasse does say he has reservations about the way Comey han- dled himself during the investigations last summer and takes issue with a lot of what he did. However, Sasse adds, “That is a different thing than being fired at this moment. I think we have a crisis of public trust in lots of our governing institutions. The FBI is still a very special institution and there is a special honor about the men and women who are special agents of the Bureau and that culture needs to be very clearly insulated in the eyes of Americans all across the political spectrum.” Apparently, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wrote a report which was handed over to Attorney General Jeff Sessions who recommended to President Trump that Comey be fired. STUDY SHOWS INCREASE IN EMPLOYMENT A study finds Nebraska saw a slight increase in technology industry employment last year. Steven Ostrowski, spokesman for the Computing Technology Industry Association or CompTIA, says Nebraska’s tech in- dustry workforce rose by 825 jobs or about 2.5% during 2016, though the state’s still below the middle of the pack.“Nebraska comes in 36th in terms of tech employment nationally,” Ostrowski says. “Their tech work- force, employees working within tech industry companies, totals 34,220 as of the end of 2016.” It also found another 32,100 people work in technology occupations in -other- industries in Nebraska. As for salaries, the study found tech workers in Nebraska aren’t making as much money as their counterparts in other states, but they’re making a lot more than most other Nebraskans. “In terms of tech wages, they’re a little bit lower, they’re at 43rd,” Ostrowski says. “The average tech wage for a worker in Nebraska is $73,900. I should note, that’s 72% higher than the average public sector wage for all private sector employment, which is $43,100.” CompTIA’s 18th annual CyberStates report finds more than 3,100 tech businesses are located in Nebraska.
