There’s so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, that it’s hardly appropriate for any of us to talk about the rest of us!

Page 5: Friday, June 26, 2020 › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 06 › June26.pdf · a.m. on Thursday – the next day at 6:10 a.m. was their chosen time. Calls at the time always make

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

Coffee Row – 8 a.m. edition – on Monday – got everyone trying to remember – scary but true! Ed Young (new owner of the Corner Building on Main & Railway) came across boxes of old cancelled cheques during renovations from North Star Oil (former owners of the building) dated 1943-45. The owner then was Aleta (Kerr) Dallas.

The “step back in history” made for an interesting bit of discussion – some present remembering the business/owners in later years while others recall hearing stories from then. (We shoulda’ recorded the discussion as already we’ve forgotten some of the FACTS – please spare us if we do a misquote!)

Telemarketers have surfaced again – not that they ever really left – just didn’t bug us. The first came at 6:50 a.m. on Thursday – the next day at 6:10 a.m. was their chosen time. Calls at the time always make one think of an emergency – so consequently not appreciated when one realizes the source! No legit company would be calling at that time – we hope!

Last week we wrote about a former area resident celebrating her 103rd birthday recently. Last Saturday (20th) we were invited to supply music for a small party in honour of Gordon Jones’ (Moosomin) 99th birthday. He also was a regular of the area dances – and still able to “lift the light fantastic”.

Hey – we’ve got an idea – hope we can remember it! The Town flower pots all have a healthy tomato plant in the centre surrounded by petunias. Our “Tomato Wager” would be a kinda’ guess which pot would have the 1st ripe fruit (yes, a tomato is a fruit eaten as a vegetable). A small entry fee could be charged to enter the wager with proceeds going towards an extravagant prize – plus bragging rights! (Gonna be a long uneventful summer!)

While on the topic of flowers and such, we see that pots are located at each memorial bench along the Haldenby pathway joining the Parks. Hanging flower baskets on each light also adorn the path – well worth taking time to explore.

Are you noticing – in Town – the lack of small song birds (robins, finches, etc.)? We are aware of at least a couple of crows/magpies dwellings in residential yards – thus the shortage of small birds? The scavenger birds are known to destroy eggs/babies of the smaller species. We hear that some concerned residents are taking steps to solve the problem.

On our weekly “run away” we saw a field of fall rye – winter wheat in head – and also another cereal crop – barley or ? with heading just beginning. Hopefully Mother Nature and the insect pests will “cop-out” and allow a bountiful harvest to happen. Forecasters are predicting the hottest summer on record – surpassing 2016.

Another absence/shortage we – and others – are noticing – families of ducklings and goslings. On our travels we’ve only seen two families of geese and no ducks – unusual year in many ways!

Some Rhubarb is now ready with it’s “second growth”, so maybe another rhubarb recipe is needed:

EASY RHUBARB CRISP 1 cup flour 1 cup brown sugar ¾ cup rolled oats ½ cup melted butter 1 tsp cinnamon 4 cups diced rhubarb 1 cup white sugar 1 cup water 2 Tbsp cornstarch 1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350°F, grease 9x13 baking dish. Mix flour, brown sugar, oats, butter & cinnamon in a bowl until crumbly. Press ½ of oat mixture into bottom of baking dish. Sprinkle rhubarb over top of oat mixture. Combine white sugar, cornstarch, water & vanilla in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, cook & stir until thick and clear, about 5 min. Pour sugar mixture over rhubarb. Spread remaining oat mixture over rhubarb/sugar mixture. Bake about 1 hour until crisp is brown and bubbly.

LIFE AFTER COVID-19

As we enter Phase 4 – part 1 of the Re-opening of Saskatchewan, we are all wondering how the “New Normal” is going to affect our daily lives – and how we are going to accept the changes.

Heard a comment the other day – thought it was kinda’ cute – “we should all give ourselves a hug/pat on the back for how we in Saskatchewan have followed instructions/precautions on helping to “curb the bug”.”

Would this be allowed under social distancing?
