Dear Parents and Carers,

North West Cross Country

We have over 30 GSPS students in the Gunnedah Zone Cross Country team competing in the North West Area carnival at Mullaley today. Good luck to all our students!

Stage 3 Choir

Congratulations and well done to our stage 3 choir who competed in the Tamworth Eisteddfod on Tuesday.

The choir were up against some very tough competition and came away with a third place.

Another highlight of the day was seeing Mrs Passfield and Danyella Young on Tuesday night’s local news explaining how beneficial it is for the students to compete against such a high standard of school choirs.

Thank you also to Jamie Brown for his guidance and his amazing ability to engage the students and bring out their best.

Parent/teacher interviews

Student reports will be sent home on Monday of week 10 and parent/teacher meetings will be held on the following day, Tuesday 2nd July. Teachers have time slots scheduled from 3:40 until 6:30pm on that afternoon and evening and if you would like to book a time to speak with your child’s teacher we ask that you please phone the school office on 67421899 to make a booking. If there are no times left that are convenient for you, please leave a message and your child’s teacher will get back to you regarding an alternative time and day that suits you both.

Yr 5 Excursion

Thank you to the large number of Yr 5 parents and students who came along to last night’s Excursion Information evening in the library. Thanks also to the members of staff who will attend for giving up their time and coming along.

I think all Yr 5 students, parents and teachers are extremely excited to be having two nights in the snowfields during their excursion!

Road Safety

Yesterday I met with representatives from the P and C as well as Gunnedah Council and Roads and Maritime Services.

The aim of our meeting was to look at how safe the roads are around the school and to look at ways we can ensure that all out students get to school and then arrive home safely each and every day.

Please make sure that you are slowing down when driving around the school and stop at the flagged crossings.

Over the next few weeks we will be collecting evidence to show there have, unfortunately, been times when students’ welfare and safety has been a major concern. I ask that any parents who have experienced or witnessed an issue concerning the traffic conditions, that you please call the school so we can record your experience or put it in writing and send it to school addressed to the P and C.

Riding to School

Please remember that all students who ride a bike or scooter to school are to wear a helmet.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend, enjoyed with friends and family.

With kind regards,

Nicki Walsh

Relieving Principal

Yarn Up

With 5B

Mabo Day June 3 5B have been learning about influential people that impacted Australian history

– Eddie Mabo was one of those amazing people.

Eddie Mabo was an Indigenous man from Torres Strait Island known for his role in campaigning for

Indigenous land rights. The Mabo decision was named after Eddie Mabo.

– Ruby Williams

Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander. He was born in 1936 on Murry Island. For 40,000 to 60,000 years before the British arrived in 1788, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples owned the land. The British came and declared the land terra nullius which means unoccupied.

Eddie Mabo fought against the Australian legal system for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land

rights. Sadly Eddie Mabo didn’t get to see the victory and died 5 months before the Mabo decision in

1993.

– Siri Sparkes

Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander man born on the island of Mer or known as Murry Island in

1936. He worked as a gardener at James Cook university. Eddie Mabo spoke at a conference about land

rights and a lawyer decided to help him prove that he was right. Eddie Mabo helped prove that terra

nullius was wrong and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait people owned the land.

It was a very cultural day on Thursday 6th June, at Gunnedah South

Public School. Not only did we have a poetry workshop in the

morning, we also had the pleasure of the company of

Miss Annelise McCarthy after lunch.

She was the very knowledgeable and popular adjudicator for Speech

& Drama at the Gunnedah Eisteddfod this year.

Miss McCarthy from Sydney, delivered a very engaging workshop for

students who had written and delivered their own speeches and

participated in impromptu speaking at the eisteddfod this year.

Many other students were also invited, and experienced an

afternoon of learning how to be a confident, successful

public speaker. They also had lots of fun interacting in group

activities and listening to a very lovely Miss McCarthy

give them tips and tricks of the trade. Thank you to

Miss McCarthy and Mrs Jenny Darley for

giving us this opportunity.

On Thursday students in years 3-6 from Gunnedah South were very lucky to have been given the opportunity to participate in a fabulous

poetry workshop. Project Officer for the Dorothea

Mackellar Poetry Awards, Miss Brittany Riley, came and

engaged two separate groups … Stage 2 & Stage 3 in a poetry writing session. Each group created a fabulous poem.

The students learned to use imagery and also the fact that poems don’t need to rhyme to sound fantastic.

Kitchen Cook Off

#2

Last Thursday night, we held our second Cook Off for the year. The secret recipes the

teams cooked were pumpkin soup with home made bread/rolls. Each dish proved to be

amazing which made judging very difficult.

For the first time, Mr McGuirk and Mr Melick were our judges and I am not so sure they

will be keen to do it again. The standard of pumpkin soup was extremely high from all teams,

and choosing a winner was not an easy task. However, after much discussion and numerous

tastes, Mr McGuirk and Mr Melick gave the winner’s title to the yellow group– Bronte Snow

and her Mum, Danneil. Congratulations ladies!
