ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENING

The Lions hosted their 51st Annual Seniors’ Christmas Supper on the 9th with around 170 signing the guest register. A full course Christmas Dinner was served up by the Lions members in their striking attire.

Winners of the draws were: Ken Wilson, Anne Wilson, Shirley Palendat, Kay Dorrance, Bev King and Ken Dash. Elvis (aka Fred Gravener) was this year’s entertainment singing all the favourite songs.

(Apparently, there was “entertainment in the Kitchen” too, compliments of Lion Joel – “the pea drop”) – an unplanned/unannounced extra to the program only available to Lions members (maybe Lion Joel is offering to “share” his juggling act for 2020 entertainment).

Once again, it was fun to try to pick out “first time” attendees – they seem to try to be inconspicuous – not for long! Lion Wade “qualified” this year even with a threat involved? We hear that he was informed if he helped set up, he could sit down and enjoy supper as a guest – bin’ there, done that!

Great evening – thank you Lions!!

NOTICE:

If you want your Christmas/New Years business hours posted in News-in-Five, please let us know before Wednesday noon, December 18.

I’ve never actually been skydiving but I have zoomed in on Google Earth really, really fast.

Meeting a friend during a last minute Christmas shopping trip, Emily, a chronic procrastinator, immediately launched into a long drawn-out lament: None of her Christmas cards were addressed, no presents were ready, she hadn’t done a bit of decorating. The stores were all crowded, the best merchandise had been sold. She hadn’t even thought about a Christmas tree. She simply didn’t know what she would do!! Her friend listened patiently until Emily paused for breath. Then, with pretended concern, she asked, “Why you poor thing. Didn’t you know it was coming?”

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

“ ________ it’s cold outside” – can’t use the old saying we’re used to – seems it’s politically incorrect any more! According to the forecast, this “deep freeze” is to be short-lived – hopefully! By the time you are reading this, we might be on the other side of zero again – we all know about the “Ifs and Buts” when it comes to weather. While on the subject of not being politically correct, we hear that the term “MIDGET” is to be banned from sports categories – where do we go next? On our travels east on Highway #48 (to Fairlight) we are seeing similar symptoms like those witnessed from Fairlight to the Manitoba border before the recent resurfacing project. Can we dare to hope to see a similar project from Fairlight to the #9 junction in 2020? (Dreaming hasn’t been banished from our society yet, has it?) Last Friday on our “paper route return”, we witnessed repairing being done on the “Carpy-bump” just east of Town – thinking this is a repeat performance – for how long this time? Are you noticing on your visits to the grocery stores that the prices have formed a habit of continually “sneaking up”. We have been warned to expect increases on some items from 4 – 6%. Guess the choice is – if you want it, pay the price – complaining included! Heard reports of a wild boar being spotted and shot on a farm between Walpole and Fairlight – social media showed it as a good size. One can only wonder if they travel solo or are friends nearby? In closing, we were able to take in Carlyle’s Annual Dickens Festival last weekend. If one wasn’t in the Festive mood before attending, you sure were when leaving – an awesome event with seemingly the whole community involved. Only 11 shopping days left – it may be COLD outside, but the credit/debit cards will be “heated-up” with the “wish list checkoff”… …

PUMPKIN CRANBERRY MUFFINS

2 ¼ cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice ½ tsp salt 2 large eggs 2 cups sugar 1 cup canned pumpkin ½ cup oil 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, chopped.

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) In a mixing bowl, combine the first four ingredients. In another bowl, beat eggs and sugar; add the pumpkin and oil and mix well. Stir into the dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in cranberries. Fill paper-lined muffin cups three-fourth full. Bake for 18 – 22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for five minutes before removing from pans to wire racks. Makes 24 muffins. Enjoy the tart cranberry with the pumpkin. Yum Yum.

Garry went to the Post Office to buy stamps for his Christmas cards. “What denomination?” asked Terri. “Oh! Good heavens! Have we come to this?” asked Garry. “Well give me 50 Methodist and 50 United Church ones please.”

Christmas Spirit …The annual Christmas play was the order of the day at a private school and the teacher chose an amiable, beautifully brought-up boy of seven to play the role of the innkeeper at Bethlehem. The boy had trouble learning to turn away Mary and Joseph with a curt: “No room at the inn” but had his part down pat by the end of the rehearsal period. Then came the big night, with his proud mother and father beaming at him from the first row. He boomed out his “There is no room at the inn” with great authority, but then he couldn’t resist adding, “But come in, anyhow, and have some cookies and milk.”

Nathan wanted to buy his wife a little Christmas gift. Always short of money, he thought long and hard about what to buy. He entered a department store and asked a salesgirl for help. She showed him a bottle of perfume costing $150. “Too expensive,” muttered Nathan. She returned with a smaller bottle for $100. “Oh, dear,” Nathan groused, “still far too much.” Growing rather annoyed at Nathan’s stinginess, the sales girl brought out a tiny $10 bottle. Nathan became really agitated, “What I mean,” he whined, “is I’d like to see something really cheap.” So the sales girl handed him a mirror.

I was thinking of making a New Year’s resolution, but what the heck … why tamper with perfection?

A CHRISTMAS CARD

I wonder if you know the reason I send you a card each year at this season. Do you think it’s a habit I just can’t break, Or something I do just for customs sake? I think you should know that it’s something more – For me Christmas opens the Friendship Door And I find myself reaching across the year And clasping the hand of somebody dear. To me it’s a link I wouldn’t want broken That holds us together when words are unspoken. For oft through the year we have to forego Exchanging good wishes for those we know. But Christmas opens the Door of the Heart Whether we’re close or far apart. When I write your name I think of you And pause and reflect and always renew The Bond that exists since first we met And I found you somebody too nice to forget.
