Residents of Eastleigh have faulted the manner in which police carried out an operation following the Mon-

day terror incident in which six people were left dead and scores injured.The residents have accused the security apparatus of causing anxiety and not fol-lowing due process in handling of security situations in the area.On Monday night, an operation was launched in the area that led to the arrest of more than 567 suspects. The police are accused of harassing and victimizing residents especially those from the Somali community.Tales of police men breaking into homes at the wee hours of the night, smashing doors and windows in the estate have been de-cried by residents who feel that their con-stitutional rights have been violated by those tasked with providing security and maintaining law and order.“Whenever such incidents occur in this place, it is the police who benefit and they seem to enjoy harassing people”, said a resident who sought anonymity.Residents in Eastleigh have for long com-plained about how the men in blue extort money from them and even those who have documents find themselves caught up in the situation.“Do we always have to buy our freedom while it is one of our fundamental rights?” he continued.Reacting to the attacks, the Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims (SUPKEM) secretary General Adan Wachu called on the police and law enforcement agencies to exercise due diligence and restraint while trying to apprehend and bring the perpetrators of this heinous to book.Wachu further said security of the coun-try, the people as well as their properties cannot be compromised at any cost stat-ing that at the same time innocent citizens despite their color, tribe or creed ought not to be victimized and the rule of law must be upheld and respected.He urged the public in general to cooper-

State told to address insecurity

Farming based on Islamic teachings and perspective for conservative agriculture has been developed and launched in Kenya.The project, the first toolkit of its kind anywhere in Africa and indeed in the world will be implemented on a pilot basis by the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) in collaboration with Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) and Global One (GO) 2015 and is ultimately aimed at mobilizing Muslim faithful to respond to the call of rejuvenating land for better food and crop production while at the same time improv-ing the environment.Speaking on Thursday last week during the launching ceremony held at Laico Regency Hotel Nairobi, the national chairman of Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims(SUPKEM), Professor Abdul-Ghafur El-Busaidy said the Africa continent is faced with unprecedented threats such as food insecurity, internal wars, resource conflicts, vagaries of climate change, rural-urban migration as well as a huge loss of biodiversity, stressing that the greatest threat to the lives of people of Africa is insufficient food supplies that has led to a huge number of malnourished children and households that cannot meet their daily basic needs.El-Busaidy noted that the Islamic way of farming toolkit has the ability to transform agriculture since it adopts a truly holistic approach by inte-grating faith and provides practical ways of farming, knowledge, skills and empowerment to farmers to improve on their farming methods.''We have decided to lead the way in teaching our communities to prac-tice better farming methods, better livestock keeping, better care of soil, forests, butterflies, birds and bees all these and many more have spir-itual significance in Islam'' said El-Busaidy.He further lamented that soils have been degraded, different types of vegetation and animals which have been the country's heritage are dis-appearing at an alarming rate, adding that it is depressing that human activities are contributing to this sorry state stressing that it is the re-sponsibility of human beings to protect the soil and content from soil degradation.''We need to preserve the biological and chemical properties in order to benefit adequately from the crops we plant and be able to ensure sus-tainable farming'' El-Busaidy added. The Supkem chair stated that it is wrong for human beings to consume themselves in the name of development adding that UN defines sus-tainable development as that which benefits the generation of today without jeopardizing the livelihoods of generations to come, adding that he strongly believes that the Islamic way of farming toolkit will add value in resolving the problem.El-Busaidy said Supkem commend the efforts of the government in coming up with a noble idea of irrigating 1 Million acres of land stating that this will improve and increase food production for the benefit of Kenyans.He disclosed that Supkem will mobilize the Muslim community to take better care of the environment as well as implement the Islamic way of farming and join hands with the agricultural officers on the ground to improve on food production. Meaning of al-Faatihah and Its NamesThis Surah is called Al-Faatihah, that is, the Opener of the Book, the Surah with which prayers are begun. It is also called, Umm Al-Kitaab (the Mother of the Book), according to the majority of the scholars. In an authentic Hadith recorded by At-Tirmidhi, who graded it Sahih, Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, “Al-Hamdu lillahi Rabbil-`Alamin is the Mother of the Qur'an, the Mother of the Book, and the seven repeated Ayat of the Glori-ous Qur'an”. It is also called Al-Hamd and Asw-Swalah, because the Prophet said that his Lord said, “The prayer (i.e., Al-Faatihah) is divided into two halves between Me and My servants’. When the servant says, ‘All praise is due to Allaah, the Lord of existence,’ Allah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’Al-Faatihah was called the Swalah (Prayer), because reciting it is a condition for the correctness of Swalah - the Prayer. Al-Faatihah was also called Ash-Shifaa’ (the Cure). It is also called Ar-Ruqyah (remedy), since in the Sahih, there is the narration of Abu Sa`id telling the story of the Companion who used Al-Faatihah as a remedy for the tribal chief who was poi-soned. Later, the Messenger of Allaah said to a Companion, “How did you know that it is a Ruqyah”. Al-Faatihah was revealed in Makkah as Ibn ‘Abbaas, Qataadah and Abu Al-`Aliyah stated. Allaah said, “And indeed, We have be-stowed upon you the seven Mathani (seven repeatedly recited verses), (i.e. Suratul Faatihah” (15:87). Allaah knows best. How Many Verses Does al-Faatihah containThere is no disagreement over the view that Al-Faatihah contains seven verses. According to the majority of the reciters of Al-Kufah, a group of the Companions, the Tabi‘in, and a number of scholars from the successive generations, the Bismillahi is a separate Ayah in its beginning. We will mention this subject again soon, if Allaah wills, and in Him we trust. There are other scholars who are of the opinion that Bismillahi is neither a verse in Suratul Faatihah nor of any other Surah except the Bismillahi of Suratun Naml verse 30.The Number of Words and Letters in al-FaatihahThe scholars say that Al-Faatihah consists of twenty-five words, and that it contains one hundred and thirteen letters.

The Reason it is Called Umm al KitaabIn the beginning of the Book of Tafsiyr, in his Sahih, Al-Bukhari said; “It is called Umm Al-Kitaab, because the Qur'an starts with it and because the prayer is started by reciting it.” It was also said that it is called Umm Al-Kitaab, because it contains the meanings of the entire Qur'an. Ibn Jarir said, “The Arabs call every compre-hensive matter that contains several specific areas an Umm. For instance, they call the skin that surrounds the brain, Umm Ar-Ra's. They also call the flag that gathers the ranks of the army an Umm.” He also said, “Makkah was called Umm Al-Qura, (the Mother of the Villages) because it is the grandest and the leader of all villages. It was also said that the earth was made starting from Makkah.” Further, Imaam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah narrated about Umm Al-Qur'an that the Prophet said, “It is Umm Al-Qur'an, the seven repeated (verses) and the Glorious Qur'an.” Also, Abu Ja`far, Muhammad bin Jarir At-Tabari recorded Abu Hurayrah saying that the Messenger of Allaah said about Al-Faati-hah, “It is Umm Al-Qur'an, Al-Faatihah of the Book (the Opener of the Qur'an) and the seven repeated (verses).” Virtues of al-FaatihahImaam Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded in the Musnad that Abu Sa`id bin Al-Mu`alla said, “I was praying when the Prophet called me, so I did not answer him until I finished the prayer. I then went to him and he said, ‘What prevented you from coming’. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! I was praying.’ He said, ‘Didn't Allaah say, ‘O you who believe! Answer Allaah (by obeying Him) and (His) Mes-senger when he calls you to that which gives you life’ (8: 24). He then said, ‘I will teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur'an before you leave the Mosque’. He held my hand and when he was about

to leave the Mosque, I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! You said: I will teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur'an.’ He said, ‘Yes. Al-Hamdu lillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin. It is the seven repeated (verses) and the Glorious Qur'an that I was given.” Al-Bukhaari, Abu Daawud, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah also recorded this Hadith. Also, Imaam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said, “The Mes-senger of Allaah went out while Ubayy bin Ka`b was praying and said, ‘O Ubayy!’ Ubayy did not answer him. The Prophet said, ‘O Ubayy!’ Ubayy prayed faster then went to the Messenger of Allaah saying, ‘Peace be unto you, O Messenger of Allaah!’ He said, ‘Peace be unto you. O Ubayy, what prevented you from answering me when I called you’. He said, ‘O Messenger of Al-laah! I was praying.’ He said, ‘Did you not read among what Allaah has sent down to me, ‘Answer Allaah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life’ (8: 24). He said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allaah! I will not do it again.’ The Prophet said, ‘Would you like me to teach you a Surah the likes of which nothing has been revealed in the Tawrah, the Injil, the Zabur (Psalms) or the Furqan (the Qur'an)’. He said, ‘Yes, O Mes-senger of Allaah!’ The Messenger of Allaah said, ‘I hope that I will not leave through this door until you have learned it.’ He (Ka`b) said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah held my hand while speaking to me. Mean while I was slowing down fearing that he might reach the door before he finished his conversation. When we came close to the door, I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah! What is the Surah that you have promised to teach me’? He said, ‘What do you read in the prayer.’ Ubayy said, ‘So I recited Umm Al-Qur'an to him. ‘He said, ‘By Him in Whose Hand is my soul! Allaah has never re-vealed in the Tawrah, the Injil, the Zabur or the Furqan a Surah like it. It is the seven repeated verses that I was given.”Also, At-Tirmidhi recorded this Hadith and in his narration, the Prophet said, “It is the seven repeated verses and the Glorious Qur'an that I was given.” At-Tirmidhi then commented that this Ha-dith is Hasan Sahih. There is a similar Hadith on this subject narrated from Anas bin Malik (May Allaah be pleased with him). Further, `Abdullah, the son of Imam Ahmad, recorded this Hadith from Abu Hurayrah from Ubayy bin Ka`b, and he mentioned a longer but similar wording for the above Hadith. In addition, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasaa'i recorded this Hadith from Abu Hurayrah from Ubayy bin Ka`b who said that the Messenger of Allah said, “Allah has never revealed in the Taw-rah or the Injil anything similar to Umm Al-Qur'an.

Riyaadhasw-Swaalihiyn as Explained by Sh. Ibn UthaymiynAl-Ikhlaas and Derivation of an-Niyyah in all Actions and Sayings, Apparent and ConcealedAl-‘Allamah ibn al-Qayyim stated in (Mawaarid al-Amaan al-Muntaqi min Igaatha al-Lahfaan, p.35): There is no action – however insignificant – save two registers are unrolled: Why and How? i.e. Why was the deed performed, and how was the deed performed?The First - Is a question concerning the reason for performing the action, the incentive and the motive. Was there a portion [of the deed] pertaining to this world from the portions of the causa-tive agent? Or a purpose from the objectives ofthe Dunya - the love of praise from the people, or a fear of their dispraise? Or the procurement of the desirable [aspects] from this world? Or a means of averting the undesirable [aspects] of this world? Or was the incentive in the performance ofthe deed -to establish servitude [for Allah] in truth, yearning for endearment and prox-imity towards the Lord, Glory be to Him, the Most High, desiring a path towards Him? The purpose of this question -Was the individual obligated to perform this action for his Lord, or was it performed in pursuance of a worldly matter and the desires of an individual? The Second - Is a question concerning adhering to the Mes-senger (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in that act of wor-ship? That is: Was the action performed from [amongst] those legislated for the individual upon the tongue of the Messenger (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)? Or was it an action which he did not legislate, nor was pleased with? Hence, the first is a question concerning al-Ikhlaas, the second is a question con-cerning to adherence. Indeed Allah does not accept a deed save with the fulfillment of both requirements. Thus the method of liberating oneself from the first question: The attainment of sincerity. The method of lib-erating oneself from the second: The completion of adherence. [In addition to] the protection of the heart from desiring all that contradicts al-Ikhlaas, and [its protection against] whimsical de-sires which oppose obedience and compliance [to the Sunnah]. Ibn Kathiyr mentioned in his Tafsiyr (231/1) -Indeed there are two conditions [stipulated] by the Recipient of the deed:The First - [That it is performed] sincerely for the sake ofAllah alone. The Second The deed] is correct, in agreement with the Shari'ah. Hence, ifthe deed was sincere but not correct, it shall not be accepted. It is said: [This statement] emphasises and elucidates what was said by Ibn ‘Ijlaan: Deeds are not correct save by three: Fear (at-Taqwa), a good intention, and correctness [in action](Jaami'a al-Uluum walHikam, p. 10).

In summary: Verily the statement of the Prophet (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam): “Indeed all actions are by intention…” [was mentioned because he (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)] wanted to [estab-lish] the principle: The action is an occurrence [founded upon] an intention, or is the consequence of an intention. Hence [the tradition] is an exhortation towards the acquisition of al-Ikhlaas, and the summoning of an-Niyyah by the servant in those ac-tions performed by him, as a product of an objective emanating from him. Hence, the objective is the reason for the occurrence of the deed and its performance (Fath al-Baari, 13/1; Umdah al-Qaari, 25/ 1).Accordingly, it is impermissible -under any circumstances -to derive a ruling founded upon this tradition with the purpose of vindicating deeds, devoid of foundation and unprecedented in nature, merely because the intention ofthe doer was ‘good.’To consider [this tradition] from another perspective ofclarifica-

tion, it is said: This tradition is an evidence for correctness and sincerity. For this is because, the intended meaning of the state-ment in [the tradition]is: “Indeed all virtuous actions are by a virtuous intention”. It is with this meaning that [the statement] is in complete agreement with the scientific principles affirmed in the knowledge and understanding of worship and that which negates it. To complete, we shall present an example from the evidences to illustrate -by the Praise of Allah -the result: What has been authentically narrated in the Sunnah: “A man said to the Prophet (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam):What Allah wills and what you will. The Prophet (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)said to him: Have you placed me a partner with Allah? No, rather what Allah wills alone. (Hadith Hasan).

There is no doubt that this noble Companion was in possession ofa good intention and a sincere heart. Never-the-less, when his statement -emanating from him -was contrary to the Pro-phetic methodology concerning creed and verbal declarations, the Messenger of Allah (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)disaf-firmed his statement, providing caution against his mistake and clarifying the correct method, without taking into consideration his good intention. This is [from amongst] the cardinal proofs concerning this discussion (Ali Hamid al-Halabi, ‘Ilm Usuul al-Bid'ah, p. 59-63).The Prophet (Swalla Llaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) performed the ablution, the prayer and the pilgrimage. He observed the fast and donated in charity. [All actions, collectively defined as wor-ship], none of which however would be commenced by the verbal declaration ofan-Niyyah. For an-Niyyah is resident in the heart [alone]. In addition, Allah the Most Glorious is aware ofwhat is concealed in the heart, and no matter is [deemed] secret from Him. As Allah the Most High affirmed in the Verse: “Say (O Muhammad): Whether you conceal that which is in your hearts or disclose it, Allah is aware of it”. [Surah Aal-'Imraan (3): Ayah 29].It is therefore incumbent upon the individual to purify an-Niyyah, desiring the pleasure of Allah in all matters linked to worship, and to avoid seeking in the performance of these actions, other than the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. This is what has been commanded by Allah, in accordance with His statement: “They were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah and worship none but Him alone, and perform the Prayer, and give in alms. For that is the Correct Religion”. [Surah al-Bayyinah (98): Ayah 5].

Denoting: Matters of worship must be founded upon an-Niyyah, sincere and pure for His sake alone. It concerns the [purification] of an-Niyyah prior to the commencement of any action connected to worship. Accordingly, the one who intends to perform the ablu-tion must do so sincerely for the pleasure of Allah, executing it in a manner consistent with the Command of Allah. Three condi-tions ought to be fulfilled (for the completion of an-Niyyah). 1. An-Niyyah - To perform an act of worship. 2. An-Niyyah - Sincerely for the sake ofAllah. 3. An-Niyyah - Founded upon obedience and conformity to the Command of Allah. Hence, this is the complete matter associated to an-Niyyah. Similarly, the Prayer [is governed by the conditions mentioned above], in addition to all actions accepted as worship.

The UK based Muslim organization, Muslim care London-UK in collaboration with Citizens Neighborhood Network (CNN) held a Free Medical care camp in the slums of Lunga Lunga Township, at the border post of Kenya and Tanzania in Jan-uary 2014. The purpose of the Medical care camp was to supplement the government and other NGO'S efforts in pro-viding the underprivileged communities of Lunga Lunga in Kwale County with health care services and drugs for treat-able medical conditions. Over 3000 patients were screened, diagnosed and received drugs at absolutely no cost to them. The services provided during the medical camp included eye care, dental care, gy-necology, pediatric, breast cancer screening and aware-ness, and spine related illness care.The Free medical care program which kicked off on the morning of 25th January 2014 and ran for two days experi-enced overwhelming demand for its services from the local community. Transport arrangements were also made to ferry patients from as far as 30 kms from the camp location.Majority of the patients treated were those who had sim-ple treatable medical problems. Over 600 patients were screened at the eye care unit and about 120 were prescribed with and received eye glasses. The eye correction glasses were all dispensed free of charge and those with cataracts were taken for surgery at no cost.The Dental unit which attended to 338 patients, performed 261 extractions and referred 64 patients restorative treat-ments to Msambweni Hospital.The Breast Cancer Awareness unit dedicated itself to ''Awareness campaigns”, whereby women were counseled on how to handle life even if one was diagnosed with breast

cancer and also guided on how to examine themselves for any signs of breast cancer The most common disease affecting most of the locals was identified as anemia secondary to The prevalence of disease and especially terminal illnesses in the country is at an alarming rate.Cases of cancer are on the increase yet the cost of medical care is also astronomically increasing thus leaving many peo-ple lacking access.About Muslim Care-UKEstablished in 1991 in London-UK, Muslim care was set up by a group of successful businessmen and has since worked to relieve the plight of the needy across the third world, through the promotion of three main agendas namely education, health and self-sufficiency.Muslim care –UK has assisted in the establishment of a num-ber of schools and health facilities in Kenya, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bosnia and Bangladesh.Many of these projects have been carried out in co-operation with other reputable charities with similar aims and are mainly education focused aimed at both adults and children. (1) SELF FINANCED STUDY PROGRAMME FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND MASTERS DEGREES

The IDB Education Trust, Kenya is pleased to announce a new Programme, offered by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), called ‘IDB Education Support Programme’ start-ing from this academic year (2014-2015) for self-financed Muslim students who wish to study in the Muslim member countries of Turkey, Jordan, Tunisia, Pakistan and Malay-sia, where IDB managed to secure places for students in the public universities in the fields of Medicine, Engineer-ing, Agriculture and related fields at substantially reduced tuition fees.

Under this Programme, students will be selected and placed in these universities of the named Muslim member countries but sponsored by parents or their local sponsors.

The IDB Scholarship Division’s role is:- • To facilitate and secure admission in the universities of its member countries.• To facilitate settling down in the study country, provide guidance and counselling activities during their study, in-cluding learning facilities without any financial obligations to IDB.

The Student and Parents’ role is:-• The student to fulfill university’s admission criteria and submit to the IDB Education Trust Kenya.• The parent must give written guarantee that they will sponsor and PAY ALL EXPENSES (tuition fee, living ex-penses and travel costs) that will be incurred during the whole period of study.

The scholarship covers:-- Monthly stipends- Books & Clothes Allowance- Tuition fees (wherever agreed and apply)- Medical coverage (only through government or state sponsored hospitals)- Returned air-tickets to join study and after graduation (for students who study abroad only)

Cases of divorce are on the increase in Ndau Island, Lamu county.According to the Island Registrar of Islamic Marriages and di-vorces, Mohammed Fumo, couples have been visiting his office every day seeking divorce a few months after solemnization of their marriage. Speaking to the Friday Bulletin, Fumo said lack of respect and failure by the concerned couple to play their respective roles are the major causes of divorces among the local Muslim commu-nity, adding that urgent measures and interventions are needed to tackle this worrying trend.Fumo further said that the cases increase before and after Rama-dhan, noting that the trend is a sign of increasing instability in marriage and a threat to the well-being of the society.He noted that on average ten to twenty cases of divorce are re-ported every month, leading to the suffering of innocent children adding that there is need for Islamic scholars to step up the drive against these rising incidences through provision of guidance and counseling services to safeguard the sanctity of marriage for har-mony to prevail in nascent families in the region.Fumo advised residents to resolve their misunderstandings through dialogue and reconciliations instead of seeking divorce on trivial grounds, adding that the institution of marriage should be respected and viewed as an institution which two people come together to begin the long journey of raising a family.

He told parents to encourage their children to marry and have re-spect for each other for peaceful coexistence and strongly spoke against practices where parents reject suitable spouses for their children on basis of tribe, ethnic and financial backgrounds, add-ing that they should instead provide them with support and guid-ance.
