KINGSTONIANRed & White

Good evening and welcome to Mill Field

for tonight’s Ryman Premiership game ver-

sus Kingstonian. We send our usual warm

greetings to the players, supporters, man-

agement and officials of Kingstonian F.C.

and trust you all have a safe journey

home. Tonight’s game is the first I can

remember being played at Mill Field for

Grays Athletic on a Friday evening, but

with our landlords Aveley F.C. being drawn

at home to South Park in the F.A. Trophy

tomorrow, we found ourselves having a

clash of fixtures and as the F.A. Trophy

takes priority, our game had to be moved.

We had hoped to bring our game against

Leatherhead forward by 24 hours, but that

didn’t prove possible, so we have the

prospect of playing twice in a very short

period of time.

Our result last Saturday against

Hullbridge Sports in the F.A. Cup was a

very professional and polished perform-

ance and one that everyone involved with

the Club was extremely pleased with. Two

hat-tricks in one game is one for our stat-

isticians to contemplate, especially as our

two strikers took turns for each of their

goals! Bradley Tomlinson and Dumebi GB-

Dumaka certainly took their goals with

aplomb and style. Credit should also go to

our defence for keeping a clean sheet. The

reward for our victory is an away tie

against Hanwell Town from the Evostik

League South Central Division next

Saturday. They play their football at one

level of the Football Pyramid below our

Ryman Premier Division, but I am sure our

management team will ensure that our

preparation will be thorough for such an

important match, with the 4th Qualifying

Round awaiting the winner. This is the

point where the 24 Vanarama National

teams join the Competition, with the 48

Skybet League One and Two Clubs coming

in next month in the First Round Proper.

An away tie will give the programme edi-

torial team, plus Alison, our boardroom

hostess, together with Janet and myself, a

break from the plethora of home games we

have had in the past few weeks [Wait till

the end of October ! – Ed], with us hope-

fully progressing into the next round

assuming we produce a display worthy of a

Ryman Premier League team. After taking

only the solitary point from our last two

home League games, we need a result to

get our superb start to the season back on

track. The Ks are unbeaten in their last

five League games, including a Monday

night victory over Hendon this week, but

will be disappointed with their exit from

the F.A.Cup at Dunstable last Saturday.

Depending on other results this week, they

could find themselves in a play-off position

after tonight’s encounter. Colin Tillett will

be running a coach to the Hanwell Cup

match and with very limited availability,

you will need to book your places as soon

as possible to ensure you have a seat.

Enjoy the game and make some noise for

the boys. Come on you Blues….

Benno & His

Blue Notes

With

Mark Bentley

Good evening and welcome to this Friday

fixture against Kingstonian. I would like to

welcome Tommy Williams and his squad

here for tonight's game. Our visitors come

here on the back of a mixture of results

this season but with their new squad tak-

ing shape and getting used to playing with

each other, I’m sure they will be very much

toward the top end of the table come the

end of April.

This fixture brings fond memories for me

as this was my first game in charge last

season. [Has it really only been a season?

– Ed]. We ended that night with a very

much needed victory and the start of a

fantastic run. I will be hoping for very

much the same tonight and to put pressure

on other rivals for their Saturday fixtures.

Last week saw us comfortably progress

into the next qualifying round of the FA

Cup and we can arguably say that on paper

the draw has been kind to us for the next

round. The game itself was a fantastic pro-

fessional display and credit to the lads for

following instructions to put the tie to bed

as quickly as possible and 5-0 after 30

minutes was a good effort. It gave me a

chance to rest a few players and if I could

I would have used all 7 subs. I was really

pleased for Bradley with his well taken hat-

trick, he has been slightly off form in terms

of goals we expect from him so hopefully

this will give him the confidence boost he

needed.

These notes are prior to our game a cou-

ple of nights ago against Leatherhead so

fingers crossed we have come away with a

positive result and are close to that top of

the table still. With a big month ahead with

quite a few games we can really assess

how the table is taking shape as we head

to those difficult winter months. I think the

lads will really need your positive support

as they look to continue their fine form.

Enjoy the game Benno

defender Greg Oates occasionally proddedBlues defence. But it was still Eastwood andGriffiths who were causing the problems forthe visitors. Eastwood scored the goal of thematch with a diagonal stunner in the 81st.Then it all began to go wrong for Grays. Withthe whistle only minutes away Grays werepushed back, and in the 88th minutes DarrenWatson headed home from a Clarke corner. But the body blow came in the eighth minuteof extra time when Jay Saunders bundled theball into the Blues net – leaving home sup-porters furious at the length of injury timeplayed. When, seconds later the final whistlewent, a dozen Grays fans ran onto the pitchbefore being ordered off by stewards"

The game is probably best remembered forthe injury time, but the replay was probablybest remembered for Grays goalkeeper MelCapleton, a hero for children of my generation, especially for his stupid dance warm up rou-tine! So the following midweek Blues travelledto Ashford in Kent where Margate were thenplaying:

Grays’ FA Cup replay against ConferenceMargate was another cliff-hanger which wentinto extra time and penalties. Keeper MelCapleton was Grays’ hero of the day, savingthree of four Margate penalties – including aretake – to secure Grays’ progress into the FACup First Round and a chance at formerFootball League side Aldershot on November8. The replay against Margate was played atAshford Town’s ground just off the M20because Margate’s stadium rebuild. The matchwas a nerve-shredder with Grays twice takingthe advantage before throwing away leads inboth normal and extra time.

Manager Mark Stimson’s boys like to playentertaining football – but they crossed theline into heart attack territory on Tuesday. Thematch started well for the visitors who wentahead with a Stuart Thurgood goal in the 23rdminute. Grays dominated for the rest of thehalf and, although pushed hard by Margate, looked to be strong with ten minutes left. Then came the body blow.

In the 85th minute Grays were adjudged tohave fouled just outside their area and JaySaunders headed in from the Terry McFlynnkick. Despite the setback Grays raised theirgame for extra time and were rewarded bysuperb goals from Thurgood and a brilliantindividual effort Freddy Eastwood who hadmenaced all night. With Grays 3-1 up and justsix minutes of extra time left, visiting fansfinally began to relax. But never-say-dieMargate threw everyone forward and first JakeLeberl and then – with under two minutesremaining – Darren Annon scored to make it 3-3 again…after a total of 219 minutes of FA Cupplay. It was then that Capleton changed thecourse of Grays’ history. He was on theMargate penalties in a flash – saving three ofthe four strikes while Eastwood, Thurgood andRobinson gave nervous White no chance.Margate supporters were stunned and visiting

Grays were finally able to rejoice that the‘injustice’ of Saturday’s late goals had beenrighted."

So it was Aldershot Town at home in the 1stRound, yet again Blues had drawn non leagueopposition in the competition proper, and tobe fair "Town" were founded in 1992 so we'renot really a former League side as the Gazettestated! Also we had played them many timesin the Ryman League. On the upside though, itwas another Conference side after we hadbeaten Margate and it was a home draw withwhat was guaranteed to be a large travellingsupport. The day arrived and this is what hap-pened:

Grays bowed out of the FA Cup in the firstround proper on Saturday when they wereoutmuscled and ultimately outplayed byAldershot Town at The Rec.Brave Blues contained Aldershot in the firsthalf – without actually threatening theConference visitors. And to the delight ofhome fans gritty Grays went ahead in the 56thminute thanks to Ram Marwa’s in-swingingcorner, Eddie Youds’ instep and LeroyGriffiths’ clinical strike. Faced with humilia-tion, Aldershot ratcheted up their game.

With less than 20 minutes of the matchremaining Blues defender Lee Williams washarshly adjudged to have pulled down LeeCharles inside the area.Roscoe D’Sane’s spot kick was low andright….and beyond the fingertips of keeperMel Capleton. Grays never quite recoveredfrom the ‘injustice’ of the penalty decision. And Shots piled of the pressure, notching upten second half corners. Then came the killerblow: Tony Shields found D’Sane who outmus-cled the Blues defence.

Aldershot’s 2002 season top scorer provedwhy he’s one of the Conference’s most prolif-ic marksmen with a fine strike which settledthe matter. The game ended on a sour notewhen, in the 88th minute, a frustrated AdeOlayinka swung for an Aldershot midfielderafter tempers flared. The half-hearted hay-makers didn’t connect, but the ref sent himpacking anyway. Nearly 1,500 watched Blueshistoric Cup run falter. Many will be askingwhether the outcome would have been differ-ent if Eastwood and Stuart Thurgood has beensupporting an often isolated Griffiths inattack."

Thanks to the Thurrock Gazette for thematch report.

So there we have it, the last time we reachedthe 1st Round as a Ryman side. The side con-tained many great players, will be the nextgeneration of Blues heroes make their markon the national stage? The draw has been rel-atively kind again and the players are definite-ly good enough, let's get behind them in allour games and see where this season takesus, after all winning the league is good, butthere is nothing like a cup run for players andfans alike!

Enjoy the game Parker

2003/04 THE FORGOTTEN CuP RuNHello everybody and welcome to this game

against Kingstonian. As you are probablyaware, the team has done well to progress inthe FA Cup and has scored 11 goals in theprocess [I know – I owe £22 ! – Ed]. NextSaturday (10th Oct) we are away to HanwellTown in the 3rd Qualifying Round. In recentseasons we have reached this stage. Last sea-son we were outclassed in a replay by aBromley side on their way to promotion to theConference Premier. The year before, we lostto Daventry Town in a disappointing match.Long after the event you can look back and saythat the 3rd Qualifying Round is par for a clubat our level of the football pyramid, but we allknow that the first round proper is the targetfor many non-league clubs below Conferencelevel.

During our Conference years we had a headstart and only had to win one game to qualifyfor the competition proper, so I decided toresearch Chris Jones excellent GraysAth-Online.com statistic website to find a "proper"FA Cup run where we started earlier in therounds. I was actually surprised with what Ifound, it was a season we had made the 1stRound Proper and I had forgotten it, althoughI was at the game. Grays Athletic was in tran-sition, yet again! The club was in the RymanPremier like today, but it was the seasonbefore Conference South was established sowe were at step 2 of the pyramid. I believe theteam was full time that season, or at leasttraining more than a couple of evenings a weekanyway and all we had to do was finish in thetop however many to be part of the followingseasons new league. Of course we achievedthat and I believe we know who won that firstever Conference South! Anyway, back to the FACup. Grays entered at the 2nd Qualifying stageand had to face St Albans City. Although theywere in the same league as us, we actuallybeat them 9-1 at The Rec that season so it wasnot a bad draw despite it being away. The briefdescription courtesy of Thurrock Gazette was:

"Two goals from Freddy Eastwood helpedsecure Grays’ place in the next round of the FACup. But Blues made it hard for themselves, allowing their rivals to equalise twice beforethe eventually stepped up a gear at ClarencePark. Grays went ahead after just seven min-utes when Martin Carthy fired past Barry Whitein the home side’s goal. But City came back inthe 20th with a Graeme Tomlinson penalty.

Grays retook the lead in the 37th minutewhen Eastwood’s near-post shot scudded in,and the tit-for-tat goal scoring continued asCity’s Scott Oakes scored just on the breakwith an inch perfect chip. Sloppy defending inthe second half gave Freddy Eastwood achance to score his second and the visitorsmade sure of the game five minutes from time.

Stuart Thurgood lobbed the keeper and left ahapless City defender unable to clear."

The next round see Blues paired with oldfoes Hendon and that man Eastwood was at itagain!

"Three goals from Freddy Eastwood keptGrays’ FA Cup dreams burning bright onSaturday. Hendon hardly knew what hit them. The first goal came out of a clear blue skywith less than 90 seconds gone. DannyHayzelden’s corner was connected byEastwood, and it put still-settling in an opti-mistic frame of mind. Grays passing game wastoo much for the visitors who were strugglingto cope with runs from in-form StuartThurgood and Leroy Griffiths. Griffiths andMartin Carthy were sparking off each othertoo. Hendon struggled to find any form in thefirst and when Hayzelden was adjudged tohave been brought down in the area it wasEastwood who stepped up, kept his footingand made it 2-0 in the 44th. Hendon manageda brief fight-back in the second half, withgreat tries from Scott Cousins and EugeneOfori – but Mel Capleton was determined notto let anything past him.

Eastwood’s third came halfway through thehalf when he flirted with an offside decisionbut the flag stayed down. His well aimed shotwhizzed in giving Dave King no chance andputting the match beyond doubt. Blues’ fitnesslevels look top notch and with the next roundsummoning Conference side Margate to TheRec, it’ll be tested to the maximum."

As you can see from the Gazette summary,Margate were all that stood between Grays

and the 1st Round Proper. I say "all", butmuch like today, Margate were a good sidewho had to be respected. What Blues did havein their mind was that they had beatenMargate at this stage a couple of seasons ear-lier. The Gazette see the game like this:

“Grays dominated their Conference Leaguerivals Margate at The Rec – but pressed theself-destruct button in the dying minutes ofthe FA Cup 4th round qualifier. Blues were 3-1 up in the 88th minute. But two late goalsfrom the visitors – one in the eighth minute ofinjury time – scuppered the would-be-giant-killers hopes. Grays got off to a great startwhen Freddy Eastwood’s sixth minute shotrebounded off keeper Phil Smith, and wasslammed home by Leroy Griffiths. Griffiths gotGrays’ second in the 23rd, shrugging off a vis-iting defender and sliding the ball into the net.

Margate managed to get one on the score-board in the first half. A mysterious pushingincident in the area resulted in a twice takenpenalty for top Margate marksman AdrianClarke. He beat Mel Capleton who had virtual-ly nothing to do for the first 43 minutes.Margate’s resolve stiffened a little for the sec-ond half. Jean Michel Sigere and attacking

The Football Association is asking theRyman League's fans, players and offi-cials to take part in the biggest surveyof grassroots football in its history.

To produce the fullest picture yet ofthe experiences and views of thoseinvolved in the national game fromNon-League to Sunday football, contri-butions are being sought from players, coaches, referees and other officials aswell as the staff and volunteers thatform the estimated 400,000-stronggrassroots football workforce. Runningthrough to 30 October, the most com-prehensive survey ever was launched atWembley on Tuesday to back up therecommendations outlined in GregDyke’s Chairman’s Commission, whichsets out the ambition to build footballhubs in 30 cities, as well as double thetotal number of full-size, publiclyaccessible 3G artificial grass pitchesacross England to over 1000.

The governing body is also committing£48m directly through its funding ofthe Football Foundation, as well asinvestment in 100 new turf pitches andimprovements to a further 2000 as partof The FA Pitch Improvement Plan. Thanks to match funding from theGovernment, £4m per year is also beinginvested in grassroots coaching to funda network of county coaches taskedwith improving and supporting coach-

ing through club mentoring pro-grammes. There will be a drive to getmore top level grassroots coaches intothe game and an extension of coachingbursaries to encourage more womenand people from BAME and LGBT back-grounds into the profession.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn, pic-tured, said: "We are on the cusp of areal revolution within grassroots foot-ball and, as we move forward, it is vitalwe ensure that we are listening tothose that it impacts upon directly”.Our new four year strategy has beendesigned to be adaptable to ensurethat we are able to meet the key objec-tives we have set. This will be achievedthrough listening as well as acting.

"The grassroots football audience con-sists of a cross section of diverse com-munities and this survey will help usensure we service these groups effi-ciently via a range of methods, frominclusion initiatives to implementingtechnology. "And, as we build on theincreases in boys and girls participationand growth in disability football, feed-back from such a large sample groupwill help us refine our goals and tar-gets."

GRAYS ATHLETIC 1-1 STAINES TOWNWEDNESDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER 2015

Sean Cronin's 90th minute header was enoughto secure a share of the points against StainesTown writes THE MARINER.

After Saturday's disappointing defeat the Bluesalthough again not at their best produced animproved performance against a hard workingbut sometimes cynical Staines Town. It seemedat times some of their players were playing onice such was the number of times they hit thedeck under the slighted touch, indeed Stainesstriker Cox seemed to be trying to emulate TomDaley!

A reshuffled home side made one change dueto injury to DD Dumaka with Roman Michael-Percil coming into the side. Both sides made anenergetic start moving the ball on a playing sur-face which although not perfect benefited fromthe recent heavy rain and it was the Grays whohad the first chance of the game when JamesStevens corner saw Turner claw the ball away toNathan Ferguson but hesitation allowed Bennetto clear comfortably.

Joao Carlos did well to win a freekick played inby Stevens who found Ferguson out wide his lowcross was met by Bradley Fortnum-Tomlinson buthis hooked effort fell just wide. Blues had a letoff at the other end when Sean Cronin dwelt onthe ball allowing Wanadio the get in a shot thatsailed past the post. Tomlinson then used hispace to outstrip the visitors’ central defendersbut unfortunately his ball into the path ofMichael-Percil was just too heavy and the chancewent begging.

The visitors pressing tactics were forcing Bluesto rush their passes and on 25 minutes they wereto get their reward, Kenny Beaney was caught inpossession quickly dispossessed the ball wasplayed to the pacey Wanadio who's shotalthough lacking any power appeared to deceiveLamar Johnson as he stood and watched the ballnestle in the bottom corner. Blues forced twoquick corners and Beaney was unlucky whenfrom Stevens’ second kick he saw his back head-er go wide and high with Turner beaten. Stainesat this stage looked the sharper and more hun-gry team not allowing the homesters time on theball and errors began to creep into the Bluesgame but they still posed the visitors problemswith their quick breaks.

Jay Leader embarked on a forward run releas-ing the ball to Michael-Percil who managed towin a corner. Siva’s flighted kick sailed across thearea without a Blues forward attacking the ball.

HT 0-1The second half saw the introduction of Harry

Agombar replacing Beaney who sustained a ham-string strain. Blues took the game to Staines asthey searched for the equaliser Carlos wasbecoming more influential using his pace downthe flank a good run from him won a throw in theball eventually found Michael-Percil who's insidepass to Nathan Ferguson allowed him to fire offa shot which failed to hit the target sailing over

the bar. Staines looked dangerous on the breakwith Wanadio the focus of many of their attackscausing Siva problems but to his credit he stuckto his task.

Blues were given a potential lifeline when thelively Michael-Percil ran at Staines fullback Felixresulting in what seemed at first glance to be arather generous penalty award when thereappeared very little contact. The normally reli-able Stevens kick was struck with his usualpower but lacked accuracy allowing Turner toblock with his legs. Blues had a let off and were equally thankful tokeeper Johnson when he blocked Wanadio'sfierce drive following a quick breakaway. Bluescontinued to search for that elusive equaliserwith manager Bentley bringing on Luke Reynoldsto replace Stevens hoping his extra pace couldunlock the visitors’ rearguard.

The tricky Michael-Percil weaved his way for-ward playing in Carlos who curled a shot whichTurner did well to palm away for a corner. Percilwas then the recipient of a dreadful tackle byBennet the visitors left back who quite clearlywent over the top of the ball with studs showing, everybody expected a red card but although theincident was just feet away from his assistant thereferee failed to even award a free kick. Afterlengthy treatment to Michael-Percil the officialrestarted the game with a bounce up at least tenyards forward from the original incident, anotherexample of weak officiating.

Stung by this injustice Blues continued to probefor an opening, Tomlinson should have done bet-ter when in on goal failing to test Turner as hiseffort flew harmlessly wide. Ferguson's headercaused panic as Staines managed to scramblethe ball away just as it appeared to be crossingthe line. Staines had played some neat footballat times and caused Blues problems but werealso guilty of some cynical tactics going downunder the slightest of touches and in the secondhalf a good deal of time wasting. It was the lat-ter which was to cost them dear when in timeadded on Blues snatched a well-deservedequaliser. Ferguson found space out wide on theleft and floated in a tantalising cross; SeanCronin rose highest and beat Turner with alooping header to bring the scores level much tothe delight of the Blues faithful.

There was barely time for the restart when MrKillip blew his whistle to bring the game to a con-clusion. To say Staines were upset with Bluesequaliser would be an understatement displayinga good deal of petulance at the final whistle. Sonot one of Blues better performances but cer-tainly Mark Bentley got the reaction he was look-ing for with a much improved showing followingSaturday's reversal against Bognor. The loss ofSkipper Kenny Beaney is a blow but hopefully hishamstring strain will not keep him out of actionfor too long. Blues dropped to second in thetable with Leiston replacing them at the top fol-lowing their win against Brentwood.

1968: Birth of sextuplets stuns Britain

A woman has given birth to six babies inwhat is being hailed as the first recordedcase of live sextuplets in Britain.Sheila Thorns from Birmingham underwenta Caesarean section early this morningduring which six children - four boys andtwo girls - were delivered.

Mrs Thorns gave birth two months pre-maturely - on her 30th birthday. All thebabies were placed in incubators afterbeing delivered but one - a girl - diedshortly afterwards while being given ablood transfusion. Twenty eight medicalstaff from Birmingham Maternity Hospitalwere present at the delivery and the fivesurviving babies - Ian, Roger, Lynne, Julieand Susan - are now being cared for by aspecialist team.

Doctors say around one birth in 3,000million will result in sextuplets. However, those odds were reduced for Mrs Thornsdue to the fertility treatment she had beenundergoing. Her husband, Barry, said thecouple had been aware of the possibility ofhaving more than one baby. Mr Thornssaid: "We were expecting this multiplebirth but we were stunned when we werefirst told that Sheila was likely to have fiveor six babies. We have wanted children allour married life," he added.

Over the past two years Mrs Thorns hasbeen treated with gonadotrophin whichcontains two hormones known as FSH andLH. The consultant treating her, Dr Cooke, said Mrs Thorns and several other womenwere unable to conceive until the propor-tion of LH was increased but that hadresulted in a series of multiple pregnan-cies.

"We have had one set of triplets recently, and we know of some more who have notyet been born. I think we are going to havesome more yet," he said.

But Dr Cooke believed the medical profes-sion had learnt a lot about the effects offertility drugs from those cases: "I thinkthere is a real possibility that one day weshall be in a position to let a patient choosehow many children she will have," he said. Before 1938 multiple births were registeredas separate events but it is believed around18 sets of sextuplets have been born in theUK this century though it is unknown howmany of them survived.

However, the anxiety is not yet over forthe Thorns who have been warned by anobstetrician that more of the babies mayyet die.

In ContextThree of the Thorns sextuplets survived.

The numbers of twins, triplets and othermultiple births have soared in the yearssince fertility and IVF treatment becamewidely available.

So, this week we feature an East End boywho had a Caribbean dream and fulfilled it.

WARREN HACKETT.Born: 16.12.1971.Clubs: Tottenham Hotspur, Leyton Orient,Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town, Barnet,Harrow Borough, Grays Athletic, FordUnited, Chesham United, Waltham Forest,Fisher Athletic and Erith & Belvedere.

A true Eastender, born in Plaistow andeducated at Brampton Manor School, EastHam, this full-back was an apprentice atTottenham Hotspur and was part of theirF.A. Youth Cup-winning side of 1989-1990season when they beat MiddlesbroughYouth 3-2 on aggregate. Released byTottenham Hotspur in the summer of 1990,he signed for Leyton Orient in June 1990,playing in their Football Combination teamfor most of his first year until making hisdebut for the first team towards the end ofthat season when he played againstSwansea City at the Vetch Field on 30 April1991. His Football League debut ended asa 2-1 win for the O's. A regular for the nextthree seasons, in July 1994 he signed forDoncaster Rovers. He was virtually anever-present in the side and obviouslyimpressed Mansfield Town manager AndyKing as he signed him in October 1995. Itwas at Mansfield Town that he probablyplayed the best football of his career and, naturally, people were beginning to takenotice. A knee injury towards the end of1997 hindered his progress but he wasabout to enter an exciting period of hiscareer.

In the summer of 1997, Earl Jude Jean, aSt. Lucia international, had been releasedby Rotherham United and was training withMansfield Town, hoping to earn a contractbut also staying fit. He got talking toWarren and asked him where he camefrom. Warren told him that his parentswere from St. Luicia and Earl told him tomake a video and send it to the St. LuciaFootball Association. Earl moved on toPlymouth Argyle and Warren made hisvideo. At the beginning of 1998, he wasnotified by the St. Lucian F.A. that he'dbeen selected for the Caribbean CupQualifying Series in March 1998 to be heldin Casries, St. Lucia. His knee injury wasalmost healed and, in the middle of March,he headed to the Caribbean, much to thechagrin of Mansfield Town manager, SteveParkin, who was annoyed at his apparentlack of respect for him and the club afterthey had looked after him during his injury. On 18 March he made his internationaldebut for at the National Stadium inCastries as St. Lucia beat Barbados 2-1 in

the first game of the qualifiers.Unfortunately, St. Lucia finished second toMartinique and went out of the competi-tion. However, Warren was picked to playfor a Caribbean Select XI in a game againstBarbados in the U.S.A. later that year.

Returning to Nottinghamshire, Warrenhanded in a transfer request, stating thathe needed to move to enable his interna-tional career to progress. However, it was-n't until March 1999 that he got his move, returning to London and signing forBarnet. Unfortunately, injuries were begin-ning to take a toll on his fitness and formand he left Barnet in 2001, realising hecouldn't continue a Football League career. He signed for Isthmian League PremierDivision club, Harrow Borough but didn'tstay long before signing for fellowIsthmian Leaguers, Grays Athletic, inNovember 2001. In the summer of 2002 hesigned for Conference South club, FordUnited (now Redbridge) before heading toIsthmian League Premier Division CheshamUnited. They were relegated at the end ofthe season and Warren moved on again, joining Southern League Waltham Forestas Player-Coach for 2003-2004. In thesummer of 2004 he became Player-Coachat Isthmian League Fisher Athletic stayingfor two seasons and helping the Docklandsclub to promotion to the Conference Southat the end of 2005-2006. He then went toKent League Erith & Belvedere in the sum-mer of 2006, again as Player-Coach, wherehe finished his playing career.

He then went off to Canada where he wasTechnical Director of Glen Shields FutbolClub, Vaughan, Ontario, helping them toset up a Men's football team whereasbefore they were chiefly coaching theirYouth teams. He returned to England inJune 2010when he was appointed AcademyDirector at Dagenham & Redbridge, effec-tively setting up their Youth Academy. InFebruary 2013, he became Assistant-Manager to John Still. Who left the follow-ing month ! Not to worry, he has stayed asAssistant-Manager to Wayne Burnett as theclub have fought to survive in the FootballLeague over the past couple of seasons.

Since then, the Club have kept their sup-porters aware of developments. Mostrecently, a message was placed on theirwebsite, updating an earlier statementissued soon after the Chelsea rumour startedin 2014.

Although some aspects of the discussionswere obviously confidential, Kingstonian’sJoint Chairmen, Mark Anderson, JohnFenwick and Malcolm Winwright gave detailswhich I’m sure were appreciated by K’s sup-porters. The Chairmen reported the follow-ing: “AFC Wimbledon have submitted revisedplanning applications which are being con-sidered by Merton Council. This may resultin approval or may be ‘sent up’ to anotherauthority for comment. A conclusion may notbe arrived at this year. AFC Dons Trust haveyet to seek approval to sell Kingsmeadowfrom their members. These meetings aredue to take place soon. Contracts for thesale of Kingsmeadow to Chelsea have yet tobe finally agreed and signed. The targetdate to move from Kingsmeadow is the sum-mer of 2017. This is subject to ongoing dis-cussions with AFC Wimbledon and their ownplanning and building works schedule. During this year we have vigorously contin-ued the process of discussions with manyother relevant officials, including the previ-ous Kingston MP, our Head of Council (KevinDavies) and other councillors. We haveengaged an experienced ‘site finder’ whogreatly assisted AFC Wimbledon in theprocess of purchasing their proposed newstadium by identifying a number of sites andworking with developers. We have alsoappointed architect/stadium designers, whohave agreed to work free of charge until wehave a project to attend to. They areextremely experienced and understand thelikely build and associated costs. All impor-tant at this early stage. We have met, butnot appointed an expert in sourcing likelygrants. Again an important reference pointas any situation arises.

Naturally the most important task is to tryand find a site within the Royal Borough ofKingston. However it is not rocket sciencefor any borough resident to understand thatfinding a site large enough to build a footballground here is massively difficult. So far, wehave not found anywhere that is not greenbelt, metropolitan open land, or owned withmassive price tags and with little or nochance of a stadium with floodlight develop-ment. Therefore in spite of the extremelygenerous donation being discussed with AFCWimbledon, we just do not currently havesufficient money to buy a piece of land and

then build, unless like all other Clubs, theproject includes some other development. Meetings with the Council have now focusedon this fact and Kevin Davies fully under-stands our position. He is giving us everysupport and continues to look at any largesite that may have development potentialthat includes our needs and has a chance ofplanning permission. This at a time whenthere is serious government pressure forhouses, schools and so many other localrequirements. This project will not happenovernight, but we are giving this challengeas much time as we possibly can. It remainsour desire not to ground share for longerthan necessary. From the previous pressrelease: “The identity of possible new loca-tions for Ks must remain confidential asspeculation would inevitably undermine thisprocess.”

“For some time, we have debated the form-ing of a Community Owned Football Club.We have concluded that at this significanttime there is a golden opportunity to com-mence this process and we would thereforeencourage everyone to come together asowners of their Football Club. We havealready had a number of meetings withSupporters Direct. More are planned oncewhen we have more clarity with the AFCposition. The next meetings will involve theSupporters Club Executive Committee, withthe aim of developing a plan incorporatingthe timing of moving the ownership ofKingstonian F.C. Ltd to a new CommunityOwned Football Club. At the time of writing,we believe we might achieve formationbefore the end of this season. At therequest of the Dons Trust they have metwith the Kingstonian Supporters ClubExecutive Committee to understand theircurrent position and have offered supportgoing forward. Once a draft plan has beendeveloped, a joint statement containing theway forward will be issued by the Directorsand the Supporters Club ExecutiveCommittee. A further update will be issuedwhen possible.”

It is still early days in our efforts at GraysAthletic to find a new home, but I hope theabove statement gives an indication of thecomplexity surrounding the relocation of aFootball Club and helps our supportersappreciate the type of processes our Club ishaving to go through to reach our goal of anew Community Stadium and Sports Facilityin our area.

At least for the moment, both Clubs havesomewhere to play, so let’s enjoy the foot-ball on offer tonight. ‘THE WANDERER’

Kingstonian

FC

The Kingstonian club came into being in1919 as a result of the merger betweenKingston Town FC and Old KingstoniansFC. However, the club can trace its ori-gins even further back and celebrated itscentenary in 1985; the reason for this isthat one of its forerunners, Kingston &Surbiton YMCA FC played its first matchon a ground in Bushy Park in November1885. In 1887 the YMCA changed itsname to Saxons FC. Then in 1890 itchanged to Kingston Wanderers FC andonce again to Kingston-on-ThamesAssociation Football Club (KAFC) in 1893.Unfortunately, in the early 1900s therewas trouble in the camp and in 1908 theclub split in two with Kingston Town play-ing at Norbiton Sports Ground and OldKingstonians on what became known asthe "back pitch" at Richmond Road.

The new Kingstonian set-up started lifein the Athenian League, a competitionthat it won in both seasons 1923/24 and1925/26, playing its home matches at abrand new ground in Richmond Road thatremained its home until 1988. In 1929the Kingstonians, widely known as theK's, accepted an invitation to join theIsthmian League as a replacement for theCivil Service FC, and remained in thatleague until 1998.

The K's have a credible history and theirblue ribbon period of the early 1930’sproduced players such as Frank Macey,Doug Whitehead, George Lee and theWhittaker brothers achieving in April1933 its then greatest accolade by win-ning the FA Amateur Cup which well andtruly put Kingstonian on the football map.Wins over Portland United (after areplay), Leyton, South Bank, DulwichHamlet, and Whitehall Printeries took theK's through to the final, staged atDulwich, against Stockton, which resultedin a 1-1 draw. For the replay Kingstonianhad to travel to Darlington, but despitegoing one goal behind after only fourminutes, the K's came back to win 4-1thanks to goals from Gibson, Urpeth(penalty) and Whitehead (2).

In the following season, 1933/34, K'sbowed out of the Amateur Cup in a sec-ond round replay to Wimbledon at PloughLane, but went on to successfully win theIsthmian League, a feat they repeated in

season 1936/37 and, of course in1997/98.

In season 1959/60 it seemed as thoughthe Amateur Cup was going to return toKingston as the legendary Johnny Whingheaded K's into the lead against Hendonin the final at Wembley Stadium. Twogoals in the last three minutes, though, had the FA officials busily changing thered and white ribbons for green andwhite ones as Hendon won the cup forthe first time. To qualify for the final,Kingstonian disposed of Histon,Letchworth Town, Ferryhill Athletic,Carshalton Athletic, and Crook Town in asemi-final tie played at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United.

The Kingstonian teams of the early1960’s were arguably as good as those ofthe 1930’s and many trophies were won. After winning the Surrey Senior cup forthe 9th time (as Kingstonian) in 1967, theclub's successes dried up and despite theendeavours of many managers andcountless players, the team went intodecline. In 1979 relegation to DivisionOne was suffered, but in 1985 the clubbounced back as runners up toFarnborough Town. K's were a mite fortu-nate as Leatherhead, who finished abovethem on goal difference, had three pointsdeducted for fielding an ineligible player.Kingstonian remained as members of thePremier Division until the end of the1997/98 season when promoted to theNationwide Conference.

The famous Richmond Road ground, which was loved by so many, becameincreasingly dilapidated and subject tovandalism, so a decision was made torelocate and develop the site for housing- a move that also assisted the club'sfinances. The last game played there wasin January 1988 against Bromley. Afterone and a half season's ground sharing atHampton's Beveree ground. K's openedtheir brand new Kingsmeadow Stadium(on the site of the old Norbiton SportsGround) in August 1989, when SloughTown were the visitors. After achieving adraw with Peterborough United in 1992,the club recorded a fine FA Cup win atKingsmeadow by beating Brighton in1994; they also competed well the follow-

KINGSTONIAN F.C. – AN ALL TOO FAMILIAR NON LEAGuE STORY

We thank Kingstonian F.C. for agreeing toplay at Mill Field this Friday evening, as ourlandlords, Aveley, have a home tie tomorrowin the F.A. Trophy. We hope that their jour-ney through the tunnel was trouble-free andthe return over the bridge does not delaytheir return to Surrey later this evening. (Atleast it’s a free passage home if the sup-porters leave it until after the 10pm “free totravel” deadline has passed!). I understandour players requested a Friday fixture, rather than a Sunday alternative, eventhough we were due to play at Leatherheadjust 48 hours earlier. This piece has beenwritten before that game was due to beplayed, so we will see how our players reacttonight to a compressed timetable, assum-ing the game did take place.

The K’s have been under a cloud for sometime now regarding their ground situation,so we have every sympathy for them, as wecontinue our own battle for a return to ourhome town. Going back to 1988, they soldtheir site in Richmond Road, which wasdemolished and sold for housing. Afterground-sharing at the Beveree withHampton for a season and a half, theyopened their brand new KingsmeadowStadium, on the site of the old NorbitonSports Ground, owned by Kingston Council,in August 1989.

I remember well my first visit toKingsmeadow in that 1989-90 season whenwe were both competing in the RymanLeague Premier Division. It was a feeling ofdéjà-vu, as their new ground was very heav-ily replicated on a new stadium built byAylesbury United in the 1980s and who weplayed in League and Cup competitions dur-ing that time. The lease at theKingsmeadow site was subsequently pur-chased by AFC Wimbledon in 2003. Sincethen, Kingstonian have shared the groundthey built. In December last year, therewere reports that Chelsea were set to buyKingsmeadow from AFC Wimbledon, if theDons’ plans to build a new ground back intheir home Borough of Merton, wereapproved. Fears were raised that the dealwould leave Kingstonian without a home. Astatement was released by AFC Wimbledonowners, The Dons Trust, admitting that theClub had been in talks with the PremierLeague Champions.

It said: "The Dons Trust, owners of AFCWimbledon, can confirm that the Club hasbeen in discussions with a number of organ-isations, including Chelsea Football Club, over the future of Kingsmeadow, should ourClub's proposal to move to a new stadium inWimbledon be approved by Merton Council. These discussions are confidential and eachproposal is being thoroughly evaluated toensure it provides the best outcome for thearea and the Club. Kingston Council andKingstonian F.C., of course, have beenbriefed about the discussions." The state-ment added that any change of ownership ofKingsmeadow would need to be approved bymembers of the Dons Trust. It had been along held ambition of AFC Wimbledon’s tomove back to their spiritual home of Mertonever since the club formed in 2002, follow-ing the original Wimbledon FC's relocation toMilton Keynes. AFC Wimbledon boughtKingsmeadow from Kingstonian's controver-sial former chairman Rajesh Khosla, for areported £2.5m. In return, the Ks havebeen allowed to stay at the ground as ten-ants, rent-free.

In November last year, AFC Wimbledonsubmitted proposals for an 11,000-seatarena at the site of the greyhound stadiumin Plough Lane - a stone's throw from theprevious Wimbledon's former home. However, a source close to the Kingsmeadownegotiations claimed a deal has alreadybeen struck between the Dons and Chelsea, should the football stadium plans beapproved. The source also claimed Chelseaplanned to use the stadium as a homeground for the Club's youth and women'steams - and that Kingstonian could beforced to relocate elsewhere.

Reacting to the news at the time, SamElliott, news editor of the Non-League Paper, tweeted: "Imperative that if @AFCWimb-ledon do sell Kingsmeadow to Chelsea orwhoever, a clause for Kingstonian to remainis inserted into any contract."

Commenting at the time of the report,Kingstonian co-chairman, MalcolmWinwright, said: "We are all aware thatthere are developments and we are talkingto AFC Wimbledon on a regular basis. Wehave to wait and see what happens - thereis a lot of conjecture going around and itisn't very helpful. We are comfortable abouteverything that's happening at themoment."

ing year against Plymouth. In front of3,495 supporters the K's held LeytonOrient to a 0-0 draw only to lose 2-1 inthe FA Cup 2nd Round Replay in 1998.Drawn away to Luton Town in the FirstRound of the FA Cup in October 1999 sawthe K's come in at half time 1-1 only to godown 4-2 at the end.

At the beginning of the 1997-98 season, the club appointed Geoff Chapple asmanager. He brought about an excitingchange of fortune for the club. In his firstseason, he took the club to the IsthmianLeague Premier Division Championship. In the following season, their first in theFootball Conference, the club finished acreditable 8th, but they capped it all offby winning the FA Trophy at Wembley inMay 1999 with a 1-0 victory over ForestGreen Rovers. The following season1999/2000, in the last FA Trophy Finalbetween the famous Twin Towers, the K'sretained their title with an exciting 3-2win over Kettering Town, giving Chapplehis 5th FA Trophy Final win in seven sea-sons (the other three with Woking). Theclub also reached their highest position of5th in the Conference.

However, season 2000/2001 proved tobe extremely mixed. The K's made theheadlines again with a tremendous run inthe FA Cup. A home win against DevizesTown was the start of an incredible runthat saw the K's defeat Brentford,Southport and Southend United all awayfrom home. In the Fourth Round, K'swere thwarted in the last kick of thegame at Ashton Gate as Bristol Cityscored a very last gasp equaliser beforewinning the replay at Kingsmeadow in alive televised match. Unfortunately, theclub's league form proved to be exactlythe opposite, as the K's finished next tobottom and were relegated back to theRyman Football League.

Season 2001/2002 and it was time againfor a change, as the club and GeoffChapple parted by mutual consent.Kingstonian quickly appointed formerDover Athletic man Bill Williams as theirnew manager, who had working alongsidehim former Tottenham Hotspur playerSteve Sedgley as his assistant. In late2001 Williams departed the club andSedgley moved up to the position of man-

ager and his assistant was Kim Harriswho was promoted up from the positionof reserve team manager.

December 2002 saw the sudden resig-nation of the highly promising Sedgley asmanager. The club immediately promotedHarris, a former K’s striker, to managerand appointed former Woking man ScottSteele as player/coach. The club had upsand downs over this period but only failedto make the new Conference South fol-lowing a single goal defeat to Lewes in aRyman League playoff.

Following a poor start to season2004/05 Harris decided to call it a dayafter just four games. Scott Steele waspromoted to manager but, despiteencouraging good football from his side, was unable to prevent what became aninevitable relegation to Division One.However, good news arrived off the fieldwhen local businessman Jimmy Cochranebought the football club, giving the club apositive outlook for the first time in sev-eral years. Steele's resignation followedtowards the end of the season when for-mer assistant manger Ian McDonald wasbrought in along with Stuart McIntyre ashis coach with a view to resurrecting theclub's fortunes.

The 2005/06 season saw K's move upthe table only to miss out on playoffs onthe final day of the season, though sil-verware was achieved following a 1-0 winover AFC Wimbledon in the Surrey SeniorCup Final. McDonald was almost immedi-ately succeeded by McIntyre as manager, whilst the club was jointly bought byMark Anderson and Malcolm Winwright –the board would be completed by thepresence of John Fenwick as chairmanfrom May 2011 to June 2014 and then co-chairman with Anderson and Winwrightfrom then on.

Stuart McIntyre’s time as manager wasunfortunately short-lived and unsuccess-ful, and midway through the 2006/07season he was replaced as manager byformer Walton and Hersham managerAlan Dowson. Dowson and his teamimmediately transformed the club, andachieved a semblance of stability. Therewas plenty of expectation for the 2007/08season, though inconsistency led to theK’s missing the play-offs once again on

Supporters Trust "12th Man"

fundraising initiative.

As many of you will be aware, a numberof Football Club Trusts and SupportersAssociations in non-league footballundertake fundraising initiatives in orderto help their club meet the costs incurredover a season.

These funds have been used towardsmeeting the costs of fielding the team, management and coaching personnel. This has helped a number of Clubsimprove their League position.

As an example the Dulwich Hamlet F.C."12th Man" scheme had contributed over£22,000 to their club's budget since itslaunch in 2012.

We recognise that we are lucky enoughto have a fantastically loyal base of sup-porters who are always willing to con-tribute to the Club via season tickets, advertising, player sponsorship, matchattendance, buying programmes, 50/50tickets, Community Chest tickets, GoldenGrays, raffles and supporting varioussocial events.

The board of the Club is extremelygrateful for these funds, as while we donot have the income stream that wecould generate from having our ownground, these monies are very importantto our progress.

We would, however, ask the supporterswho feel that they would like to con-tribute more towards Club funds, to con-sider using our "12th man" scheme to dothis.

It works in the following way:Supporters can pledge to donate funds

to the scheme for every game that wewin or draw. For example, if you pledge£2 per win and over the season we win25 games, your donation in total wouldbe £50.

In addition, you may wish to contributea fixed amount per month regardless ofresults which would also be welcomedand a standing order can be set up tofacilitate this.

The scheme has been discussed at Trustmeetings during the close season and wehave already received total pledges of£210 per month,£85 per win and £22 perdraw. As a result, should we have a suc-cessful season on the pitch, the schemecould generate well over £4,000.

This season, after two years of consoli-dation in the Ryman Premier League, theClub are very keen to push on in theLeague and would welcome your supportmore than ever.

Should you want to join, please seeDavid Barnes or Anthony Auger or com-plete the form which you can downloadfrom the website.

the final day of the season. The 2008/09 season was successful

from start to finish. A run to the ThirdQualifying Round of the FA Cup was high-lighted by a 4-0 home win over Confe-rence South team Braintree Town, all fourgoals scored by midfielder Dean Lodge. This performance led to the K’s playerwinning the Performance of the Roundaward from the FA. But it was in theRyman League Division One South thatthe biggest success came, as a verystrong start and a storming finish led toKingstonian winning the division by sevenpoints ahead of Cray Wanderers.

After an absence of four years, the clubalmost passed straight up through theRyman Premier Division, recovering froma difficult start to reach the end of theseason playoffs. It was Boreham Wood, however, who won the controversial finalmatch. Heartache followed in the follow-ing 2010/11 season when a final day col-lapse at Margate cost another attempt atthe playoffs. The following two seasonssaw mid-table finishes in the leagueaccompanied by successive LondonSenior Cup final appearances, before areturn to the playoffs in the 2013/14 sea-son, after the club finished runners-up inthe league. A semi final defeat againstAFC Hornchurch however denied thechance of promotion, in what turned outto be Alan Dowson’s last game in charge.

With former K’s midfielder TommyWilliams installed as manager, the clubagain reached the FA Cup ThirdQualifying Round, losing 3-2 to a lastminute goal against Eastbourne Borough. The league campaign was a roller-coast-er, a late challenge for the play-offsfalling short in the last couple of weeks ofthe season.

More often than not, an official wouldprefer not to get a mention in The Non-League Paper.

It’s a job where it’s much better to flyunder the radar. But sometimes we justhave to talk about them and UnitedCounties League flagger John Clark is noexception. On Tuesday night atDesborough Town v Harborough Town the61-year-old reached a remarkable 1,000games. Nearly all have been as an assis-tant referee since he ran the line for a UCLgame back in December 1974. Clarkremembers his debut fondly. The man inthe middle for Stamford against Spaldingthat day was Brian Hill, who went ontotake charge of the 1988 FA Cup finalbetween Liverpool and Wimbledon.

He also recalled an irate Stamford-sup-porting pensioner trying to attack the offi-cials as they left the pitch with her umbrel-la! Something he assured was seen ashumorous in those day. Speaking to John itwas clear how much he loves his time inthe black. He says he’s made many friendsthrough the refereeing community and heplans to keep going as long as he can. When he does decide to hang up his flag, the leagues in the area will no doubt feelhis retirement. Without people like Johngiving up their time to do something theylove, football won’t happen.

Officials may be maligned by some, butwhere would we be without them and theirdedication?

When starting out, it can be a lonely, dareI say, an intimidating job. At the park lev-els it can’t be easy to turn up all by your-self and take charge of 22 players, plussubstitutes, supporters and managers, all

trying to put pressure on you and influenceyou.

If they don’t like your decisions then youare on your own. That’s why John says it’sso important for officials to help eachother. “I just really enjoy it,” he told me.“But I can honestly say if all matchesunder the auspices of the FA were con-trolled by three officials then there wouldbe more referees. One of the reasons whythere’s a fall-out of referees at grass-rootslevel is because they are all on their own. It’s like the loneliness of the long-distancerunner. When these young lads start refer-eeing on the local parks, it’s them againstthe rest of the world.

I’m a big believer that nobody helps usbecause they are not there to help us. Soif we don’t help each other in our threeperson team then we’ve got problems. Wemust support each other.”

And we must support them.

GRAYS ATHLETIC 6HuLLBRIDGE SPORTS 0

SATuRDAY 27th SEPTEMBER 2015A hat trick each for DD Dumaka and BradleyFortnam-Tomlinson ensured Grays’ name willbe in the hat for Monday's third round drawwrites the Mariner.

The game was effectively over by the 30thminute with Blues four goals to the goodwithout ever getting into first gear, but totheir credit a shell shocked Hullbridge gal-lantly stuck to their task and were unluckynot to register a goal late in the game. Blueswelcomed back Dumaka after injury withRoman Michael-Michael-Percil continuing inthe absence of the Injured Kenny Beaney.

Blues were quickly into their stride forcingan early corner, Leader's header caused panicin the visitors defence with the ball eventual-ly coming back to him but his snapshot wascomfortably saved by Mason. BradleyFortnum-Tomlinson made a quick break hefed Carlos but his effort failed to troubleMason, moments later Dumaka had a sight ofgoal but again the shot lacked power andwas cleared easily. The pace of Jaoa Carlosand Michael-Percil was causing the visitorsreal problems with both wide men gettingbeyond their fullbacks and in the 16th minutefrom one Carlos run he cut the ball back find-ing Tomlinson unmarked in the box hequickly turned and fired an unstoppable shotpast Mason to put Grays one up. Just twominutes later it was two nil, this timeDumaka latching on to a through ball blast-ed the ball past the helpless Mason.

Tomlinson and Dumaka were combiningwell up front and on 20 minutes Dumaka fedhis strike partner who powered forwardunleashing another powerful drive to make itthree nil. Blues were now in complete controlwhen Stevens looked to get his name on thescoresheet, from a short corner he foundspace on the edge of the Hullbridge box buthis volley lacked direction and sailed over. The visitors did manage an effort on goalwhen Little broke clear but the danger wasquickly snuffed out.

On twenty nine minutes the tie was effec-tively over, Tomlinson played the ball outwide to Michael-Percil who outpaced Taylorcutting the ball back from the line he foundDumaka who cheekily back heeled the ballpast Mason to make it four. Tomlinson com-pleted his hat trick in the 31st minuteDumaka picked the ball up just inside the vis-itors half sliding a great ball into Tomlinsonleaving him one on one with Mason he coollyslotted the ball home for Blues fifth of theday. To their credit Hullbridge stuck to theirtask but the passing and movement of Grayswas leaving them exposed at the back andthey were grateful to Mason who made agood block to deny Tomlinson which couldhave been his fourth and the homesters

sixth. The visitors did win a corner late in thehalf when a cruel bounce caused Sean Croninto give the ball away allowing Hornsley a runon goal, Lamar Johnson saved his goal boundeffort at the expense of a corner, the resultof which was played too long and out for agoal kick. There was just enough time forStevens to fire in a free kick which flew justwide of Masons post.

HT 5-0With the game virtually won Mark Bentley

sent on Ruddock Yala making his firstappearance since returning to the clubreplacing Cronin in the back four. Michael-Percil forced the first save of the half afterhitting a twenty yard drive which Mason didwell to collect but it was to be his last con-tribution, following another Blues raid he col-lided with Dumaka as he came for a cross, despite lengthy treatment it was apparent hewas unable to continue and was replaced bysub keeper Aldridge.

Blues eased off the pace in this second peri-od which allowed Hullbridge to enjoy morepossession although they rarely troubledJohnson, they did win a free kick on the edgeof the Blues box but Johnson gathered com-fortably. Michael-Percil was combining wellwith Luke Ifil down the Blues right frequent-ly getting round the back of the Hullbridgedefence, he played a great cross in whichjust failed to meet the head of the onrushingCarlos who was replaced shortly after byLamar Reynolds.

A Jey Siva corner found the head of Yalaand dropped just wide. Reynolds then playedin a deep cross the ball eventually fell toFerguson his first time effort was scrambledaway. Leader failed to hit the target fromanother Siva corner and then Reynolds cutthe ball back to Tomlinson, Aldridge doingwell to block his first time drive.

Hullbridge came close to opening theiraccount winning a corner Brinklow played alow ball out to the edge of the box Cox metit on the volley which produced a smart savefrom Johnson. Luke Osei replaced hat trickhero Tomlinson his job seemingly done andhe received a great ovation from the Bluesfans. Another Siva corner was cleared only tofind Stevens some 30 yards from goal butonce again his effort on goal flew high andwide. Dumaka was to record the second hattrick of the day on 85 minutes, chasing downa through ball he lifted the ball over theadvancing Aldridge the ball dropping underthe bar and despite a last minute effort toclear by Turpin he managed to stab the ballover the line.

Hullbridge had one last chance to open theiraccount in the dying moments when Hornsleybroke clear finding himself one on one withJohnson who did well to smother the ball andclear the danger.

becoming a bit too obsessive and b) wereally can't have a Sunday League gamehaving the ball in play for more than aRyman Premier League game. While thegame was a decent 1-1 draw I have possi-bly ended up with a cute kidney, apparent-ly. I was clattered from behind after awinger changed direction in front of me, Ichanged direction so my run would put mein better position as we hit the attackingthird and the lad trying to get forwardchanged direction so he could take medown, erm, get in a good position to linkup with the winger. It had to be the bigfeller didn't it...clattered me good andproper in the lower back on the left-handside. NON-LEAGuE DAY 2015Prostate Cancer UK is the official charity partner of Non-League Day on October 10th,

and we’re working to drive up attendance at matches and encourage fans to support our

Men United campaign. We’re keen to work with clubs in The Ryman Premier Division –

and the Ryman Division North & Division South, but we’ll email them separately.

We’re doing this by asking fans and clubs to make a pledge to watch their local team,

make a pledge around it (such as bringing a friend to the game) and supporting Men

United with a donation or raising awareness. We’re asking clubs to work with us and use

the attached Adverts in your programme at your match days before the 10th October, use

the attached social media graphic on Twitter/Facebook and put the Supporter Poster up

in the Club Bar. Are you able to help with this?

It would be great to chat to you about this, and hear how we can work together to

boost attendance for you and get support for Prostate Cancer UK. We’re really keen to

engage non-league supporters

with our pledge and get them

to come up with their own

ideas.

Raven’s

Ramblings

With

David Raven

We successfully negotiated a potentialbanana skin with a little more conviction inthe FA Cup on Saturday. The previousround had seen us make hard work of get-ting into the hat and we then followed thatup with a poor performance and adeserved defeat against Bognor RegisTown. I said last week that defeat came ata good time for us as we have a real test-ing run of games coming up and having ourfeet planted firmly back on terra firmaseems to have done us a power of good.DD has threatened a hat-trick on severaloccasions already this season - whichwould have been a first in some time for aBlues player - and after missing the lastround through suspension and a tough oldgame against Staines Town last week hewas determined to make an impact onSaturday...but the BFT beat him to it. DDeventually rounded off a good win by com-pleting a hat-trick of his own which alreadyhas the anoraks running to their almanacsto find out the last time two players scoredhat-tricks in the same game in alternatingsequence. News on this as it breaks.

Our u18s successfully negotiated a poten-tial banana skin as they got their FA YouthCup campaign underway on Monday nightwith a resounding 4-0 win against EtonManor at Mill Field. Nana Boachie's sidehad lost 3-2 to the same opponents in theleague in the previous week and for manyof the squad it was their first experience ofplaying under floodlights and their firstexperience of playing in the FA Youth Cup.After an understandably nervy start thelads settled down and a brace apiece fromJoseph Boachie and Billy Davis sent theyoung Blues into the 2nd Qualifying Roundwhere they will face AFC Hornchurch atBridge Avenue next Thursday night. JosephBoachie, Billy Davis and u18s captain BenMcGill have started the season well, train-ing with the senior squads and playing forthe reserves and the experience is alreadyproving beneficial to the u18s and judgingby Monday night's performance it won't betoo long before more of the younger play-ers will be knocking on the reserve teamgaffer's door!

The reserves successfully negotiated apotential banana skin as they got their ESLReserve Shield campaign underway last

Saturday. The Blues second string hostedhigh-flying Thurrock who had only conced-ed once in the league this season and hadhanded our lads a bit of a beating on theopening day of the season. On that day afreak injury ruled out goalkeeper GeorgeKamurasi hours before kick-off and travelproblems meant only 12 players made it tothe ground and only 10 players made it tohalf-time with the score at 1-0. The nexttime I tell this story our one-legged goal-keeper will have saved three penalties andour u15s back four washed away in theflood that carried the ball into the goal tomake it 2-0. The rest, so they say, is hist-tory. On Saturday the Fleet were stunnedto find themselves watching the drawinstead of being in it as goals from 18-year-olds Jamie Fuller and Calum Maltesesealed the vitory and set up a home quar-ter-final against Waltham Forest with thedate and KO time still to be decided.

No word in foobtall minds up the messeslike Brazil. Zico, Rivelino, Socrates,Ronaldo and many, many more but nonemore so than the master Pele...the beauti-ful game transcends to a level where youforget the poverty, the social mayhem andthe kids exchanging automatic weaponsfire as they battle for prized turf in thedrugs war...and now...Gabriel Murta is aname that will become as hard to shake offas the aforementioned legends. Murta wasofficiating a non-league game betweenBrumadinho and Amantes da Bola. When aBrumadinho player was not sent off for aninfringement the Amantes manager andsubstitutes - the team's name translates as'lovers of the ball' - ran onto the pitch andattacked the referee. Murta, also a policeofficer, responded by pulling out a hand-gun to ignite a series of brown trousers ashis assistants desperately persuaded himnot to use the weapon. Murta will now gothrough a psychological assessment beforea decision is made on his ability to officiatein future games.

I was reffing on Sunday and I didn't havean awful lot to do because the two sidesjust wanted to play football and when thewind picked up the ball stayed on the pitchan awful lot despite the best attempts ofthe players. I was tempted to time howlong the ball was in play but a) that's

GAFC 1890 TRuST That was the week that was. Having been unable to attend last Wednesday’s Staines Town

match due to illness and suffered squeakybumitis until Sean Cronin’s 90th-minute equalis-er, I found myself back at our current spiritual home of Mill Field on Saturday for the dem-olition of Hullbridge Sports. Always an emotive issue when you see the youngsters’ headsdrop after the fifth goal went in before half time, but – as is often quoted – it’s a man’sgame (which is why I don’t play), and Hullbridge Sports have done very well to have gotto this stage in the FA Cup proceedings. I am currently in the midst of a house move which– all being well – will result in my programme editorial duties being taken over by GTE(Glyn The Elder) for three consecutive programmes. I’m actually quietly hopeful that if weget through Saturday week’s FA Cup game at Hanwell Town, we will get a further homedraw, which will make it a nice round four consecutive programmes. I know the prospectis weighing heavy on Glyn’s mind, so I naturally feel morally bound to take the mickey atevery opportunity. Just think - he’ll be editing the programme, delivering it to the boardroom, delivering it to the changing rooms then selling it on the gate! I have a spare broomhere but am unsure where to put it ….

The Trust numbers are continuing their upward trend and for that you all have my heart-felt thanks. I have recently been offered a “behind the scenes” article from one of ourtrusty gnomes at each game, so you should soon have further insight into what goes onbehind the scenes to keep this great club of ours going. Colin Tillett will be running a coachto the aforementioned FA Cup match to Hanwell – places going quickly – you snooze, youlose. Actually on the coach it’s more a case of you snooze, we tie your shoelaces together.Enjoy this evening’s match – which should be a humdinger – and let’s get behind the boys.#ProudAsPunch
