8 OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME ARSENAL FOOTBALL CLUB CARLING CUP RULES AND FOURTH ROUND DRAW Tonight’s tie will be decided this evening – with 30 minutes of extra-time, composed of two 15-minute halves, ensuing if the scores are equal after 90 minutes. Should neither side be in the ascendancy after this period, a penalty shoot-out will be used to determine the winner. Each side would then take five penalties, or as many as are thereafter required until one is the clear winner. The draw for the fourth round will take place this Saturday, September 29, between 12pm and 1pm and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports’ ‘Soccer Saturday’ programme. Fourth-round ties will be played on Tuesday, October 30 and Wednesday, October 31. LOANEE WATCH Arsenal’s loanees continue to perform well throughout the country for their temporary clubs – with Johan Djourou impressing in particular this weekend. Johan (pictured below) was at the heart of a Birmingham City defence that performed superbly to hold Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield on Saturday – a result that, into the bargain, did no harm to the table-topping Gunners. Jay Simpson completed 68 minutes for League One side Millwall against Crewe, looking lively at Gresty Road as Willie Donachie’s side dominated in a 0-0 draw. Matthew Connolly, returning from suspension, was on the bench as Colchester United drew 2-2 at Blackpool, while Kerrea Gilbert sat out of Southend United’s 3-2 win against Doncaster Rovers due to injury. Carlos Vela, the young Mexican forward, is still waiting to make his competitive debut for Osasuna – who lost 2-1 at Real Zaragoza on Sunday. ADEBAYOR MAKES HISTORY Emmanuel Adebayor secured a noteworthy record in Saturday’s 5-0 win against Derby, scoring the first-ever hat-trick by a first team player at Emirates Stadium. The Togolese forward has now scored in 18 different games for the Gunners, and, remarkably, the side has remained unbeaten on all of these occasions. Historians will be interested to know that the equivalent hat-trick record at Highbury is held by Henry King, whose treble came in a 6-0 win against Grimsby Town on November 14, 1914. Highbury’s last hat-trick was, of course, scored by Thierry Henry against Wigan in the old stadium’s final game on May 7, 2006. Jay Simpson holds the record for scoring the first hat-trick in any match at Emirates Stadium, having achieved the feat in the 3-2 FA Youth Cup Quarter-Final win against Cardiff City on February 19, 2007. 12 OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

ARSENAL FOOTBALL CLUB

The FA Youth Cup has always been a big incentive for Arsenal’s youth team eachseason, but increasingly in recent years many of the Club’s youngsters eagerlyanticipate the early rounds of the Carling Cup as well.

Ever since he took over at Arsenal,Arsène Wenger has used thesecond domestic cup competitionto give valuable first teamexperience to the Club’s youngerplayers, but not to the detriment ofthe results – quite the opposite. Last year a very young side beatWest Brom, Liverpool and Evertonaway, then Spurs over two legs inthe semi-final before unluckilylosing to Chelsea in the final at theMillennium Stadium. That followed semi-finalappearances in 2004 and 2006.So it’s little wonder that Head ofArsenal’s Academy Liam Brady islooking forward to this year’scampaign. “The Carling Cup has been great forus in the past few years” he begins.“It has given the younger players atthe Club the chance to perform inthe first team. That means playingat the top grounds, playing in frontof big crowds, and they have donethe Club proud. Some of them havegone on to get themselves loanspells elsewhere on the back ofhow well they have done, whileothers have broken through to thefirst team squad here. So all in allit’s been a great competition for theyouth development side so far, andwe’ll have to wait and see how weget on this year.”The former Gunners star admits thatthe youth players all target thecompetition as a way of making thebreakthrough to the first team, andas someone who made his Arsenaldebut as a 17 year-old, he canempathise with them: “Of course

the lads look forward to thiscompetition, and if I were in theirposition so would I. You want thatstatistic next to your name don’tyou? Arsenal first team player. “It’s certainly a big aim for the boyson the edge of the first team squad. That’s the ambition they shouldhave, but at the same time it’s notgoing to be for all of them, andsome of them will be disappointed. “We emphasis to them that theyshould never expect to be pickedfor these games. They have to beplaying well for the reserves andthey have to do well when they trainfor the first team because it’sArsène Wenger who chooses them,

not the people in youthdevelopment. He knows them well,he won’t ask for my opinion on whoI think should get the chance.”Emirates Stadium will be sold-outas usual tonight, so it could be thefirst chance some players have hadto play in front of a 60,000 crowd.Yet for those involved in the FAYouth Cup last season however, they shouldn’t be daunted, havingbeen watched by 38,187 in thehome leg of the semi-final againstManchester United.“The Youth Cup last year wasbrilliant for a lot of our players,”Liam agrees. “It was great to play atthe Emirates and great to play infront of those big crowds. That’swhat the Youth Cup is all about, preparing the players for the bigfirst team games.” Arsène has insisted he will continuehis youth policy in this season’sCarling Cup, yet he also alwaysfields a team he believes is capableof winning the game. So withPremier League side Newcastle theopponents for tonight’s ThirdRound match, there may be feweropportunities for the academyplayers than could otherwise havebeen the case. Liam says: “It’s true, we have got avery difficult draw. Sam Allardycedidn’t always prioritise the CarlingCup at Bolton. But Newcastle haven’twon a trophy for a long time and I’msure he’d like to win one in his firstseason there. They have got a toughsquad so it will be interesting to seewhat side he puts out.”
