taken wider around the two leaders at the 400m pole. At that point, the eventual runner-up, the 100/1 shot Waqqad (Quality Road), was back in 10th position, and he made up a tremendous amount of ground, but the winner had already flown and beat him by a length and a half.

Zaman won two of his first three outings at two before finishing fourth in the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes and second in the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes. Off the track after Glorious Goodwood, he reappeared at Meydan three weeks ago, finishing second in the 1400m trial for this race.

His dam, the Noverre mare Wake Up Call, won four races up to seven furlongs and was Listed-placed over six. She is a half-sister to the dams of the Group-winning fillies Summer Fete (Pivotal) and Up In Time (Noverre), the second dam won over 17 furlongs and the third dam, Upend (Main Reef), won the 12-furlong Gr.3 St Simon Stakes. The latter is the grandam of the UAE Gr.2-winning miler One Man Band (Pivotal) and the smart sprinter Overdose (Starborough), and is a half-sister to the dam

Rayya, made all at a steady pace, quickened down the home straight and won unchallenged from Expressiy (Siyouni), who had finished third in the first Classic.

Rayya, who won by nearly ten lengths on her December debut here in Meydan, is likely to take on the colts next in the Gr.2 UAE Derby on Gr.1 Dubai World Cup Day. Trainer Doug Watson said, “She was just not herself in the Guineas, but was much better tonight and always looked happy. I imagine we will have to look at the UAE Derby now, but will enjoy this first.”

She was bred by a partnership of Mineola Farm, James W Hirschmann and Silent Grove Farms, and was sold for just $7,000 as a Fasig-Tipton yearling before realising $190,000 as a two-year-old at Ocala.

Her sire Tiz Wonderful, a dual Graded winner at two, spent five seasons at Spendthrift Farm before being sold to South Korea in 2014. She is a half-sister to last summer’s Del Mar Gr.3 winner Curlin Road (Curlin), out of a winning Coronado’s Quest half-sister to Stakes winner Network (Pulpit). The winner’s third dam, Fara’s Team (Tunerup), won the Gr.1 Test Stakes and went on to produce seven winners, headed by the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Concern (Broad Brush).

MEYDAN CLASSICThis 1600m Listed contest for three-year-olds attracted a big field of 14 and was won in good style by the Charlie Appleby-trained Zaman. The son of Dutch Art, bred by Laundry Cottage Stud Farm and a 160,000gns purchase at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, settled in third against the rail before being

of Royal Gait (Gunner B), a dual Gr.1-winning stayer on the Flat and winner of the Champion Hurdle.

CURLIN HANDICAPRecent dirt races at Meydan have nearly all been won by a horse on the inside who makes all and there was a dash for the early lead in this Listed handicap over 2000m. It was the horse drawn 2, Saltarin Dubai (E Dubai), who got the early lead, moved across to the rail and won unchallenged. He was tracked all the way by Don’t Give Up (Dubawi), who held on for second ahead of the horse drawn 1, Etijaah (Daaher).

The winner was bred in Argentina by Haras Firmamento and is trained by Satish Seemar. He was a Gr.1 winner in Palermo as a three-year-old and was certainly racefit, having had three starts already this year, though he had finished second behind Don’t Give Up in the last two.

He is the best of the two winners and first eight foals out of the winner Saltarina Fitz (Fitzcarraldo), a full-sister to Gr.1 winner Saleroso Fitz and Gr.2 winners Salerosa Fitz and Aldeana Fitz. Their dam, Saldeana (Four Fingers), also produced the dual Gr.1 victrix Saldeable (New Dandy), dam of a Gr.1 winner in Saludable Nov and third dam of another, Kali Baby.

PEACE ENVOY THE LATEST NEWCOMER WITH FIRST MARE IN FOALThe Worsall Grange-based Peace Envoy has been the latest first season sire announced to have his first mare tested in foal. The mare in question is Halicardia, a daughter of Halling, who was the winner of the Listed Lupe Stakes in 2004. The brown mare was also twice placed in that grade; second in the Ballymacoll Stud Stakes and third in the Masaka Stakes. Already the dam of multiple winners by Mastercraftsman, Roderic O’Connor and Verglas, Halicardia is a half-sister to the three-time scorer Card Games (First Trump), who produced the Gr.2 Duke of York Stakes and Gr.3 (then) Greenlands Stakes winner Tiddliwinks.

Peace Envoy was bred in France by Team Hogdala AB out of the winning Dansili mare Hoh My Darling, who has also produced the Champion Scandinavian Three-Year-Old Colt Out Last Summer, winner of the Listed Norsk Derby, and the Gr.3 Prix des Chenes-placed Kadyny. The second dam, Now And Never (Kris), an unraced half-sister to the Gr.3 winner and sire Witness Box, also produced the Gr.3 May Hill Stakes-placed Everlasting Love (Pursuit Of Love), who has produced three Stakes-placed runners in the shape of Lasting Applause, Polar Eyes and Samsa. This is the further family of the excellent Dahlia, a seven-time top-level scorer in the seventies.

A €125,000 purchase by Horse France at Arqana’s October Yearling Sale, Peace Envoy became his sire’s first winner when scoring on debut at Dundalk in April 2016. On his third start he won the Listed Rochestown Stakes and, having been fourth in the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes, was runner-up in the Gr.2 Railway Stakes. Winner of the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes on his next start, he was then third, beaten just a length, in the Gr.1 Prix Morny by Lady Aurelia.

Based in North Yorkshire, alongside Cannock Chase and Millenary, Peace Envoy stands at a fee of £2,000 Oct 1st.

INDUSTRY NEWSBRITAIN

RACING ROADSHOW FOCUSES ON RACING’S PEOPLENewmarket hosted the third British Industry Roadshow of the week yesterday, the fourth, meant to be at Musselburgh today, has been cancelled and will be rearranged.

Key messages from the event included that in order to accomplish objectives, there needs to be continual cross over between differing groups within the industry and that they need to work together, something that Stephen Atkin, Chief Executive of the Racecourse Association, who along with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), The Horsemen’s Group and Great British Racing, who put on the event, highlighted. To further enforce the message, Martin Fewell, Director of Communications at the BHA, later in the morning gave a presentation titled ‘A vision for success in racing’.

The people working within the industry was a major focus of the morning. Nick Rust, Chief Executive of the BHA ran through recruitment, retention and training. This was something that was picked up on in a later panel, with Grant Harris of the British Racing School saying that the percentage of entrants to their courses is now 70-30 in favour of females. Laura Whyte, a member of the BHA board, meanwhile highlighted that the everyday lived experience is the key to retention within the industry, before adding that poor working practices need to be eradicated and that the safeguarding of staff needs to be priority.

Rust had started off the roadshow by stating that in 2018 prize money is projected to be around £160m and highlighted the already announced £6,000 minimum. He then ran through progress that had been made since last year’s roadshow and then focussed on the future.

OBITUARYBRITAIN

LENNIE PEACOCKManor House Stud owner Lenore ‘Lennie’ Peacock, breeder of Classic scorer Tirol, has died at the age of 97. Peacock’s involvement with the historic Yorkshire stud came when she married trainer Dick Peacock, who died in 1984, in 1953.

Having sent her mare Alpine Niece (Great Nephew) to Thatching in 1986, the resulting foal was sent to the December Sale in 1987 and Peacock bought the foal back for 13,000gns, buying out Robert Sangster. The colt was then reoffered at the Highflyer Sale the following autumn, where Richard Hannon bought him for 52,000gns on behalf of owner Jim Horgan. Subsequently named Tirol, the brown horse won both a maiden and the Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes at two, before going on to better things at three, where he landed the Gr.3 Craven Stakes, before a two-length defeat of Machiavellian in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas for Hannon. He then doubled up in the Irish version two weeks later.

At stud he was responsible for the likes of Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac scorer Miss Tahiti, subsequently dam of the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas heroine Miss France, and Tarascon, winner of both the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas. The sire’s Gr.3-winning daughter Softly Tread produced the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes winner and sire Pether’s Moon, while Rum Charger was another Gr.3-winning daughter, who went on to produce the four-time Gr.1 scorer Winchester.

Peacock has been in the news in recent weeks, as breeder of the Gr.1 Lightning Stakes hero Redkirk Warrior, also known as Redkirk, who took down Redzel over the straight at Flemington a couple of weekends ago. The son of Notnowcato was winning at the top level for the second time in Australia, having won the Newmarket Handicap last March.

Vazirabad (Manduro) was second in this race last year before going on to win the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup and he filled the same spot again. Held up at the back, he had a charmed run up the inside to join the leader 300m from home, but Rare Rhythm (Dubawi) was charging up the middle of the course, three horses wider, and he went to the front at the same point. Vazirabad tried hard to close the deficit, but received a bump from the other horse and his rider conceded, easing him down to finish second, beaten a length and three-quarters.

This was Rare Rhythm’s fifth win in just eight starts; he was last seen winning the Listed Silver Cup Stakes in July and his only other outing last season was a win in Royal Ascot’s Duke of Edinburgh Stakes.

He is the third foal and the best of the three winners out of Demisemiquaver (Singspiel), a Stakes-placed half-sister to Gr.3 winner Miss Caerleona (Caerleon; dam of Group winners Miss Coronado and Karen’s Caper and second dam of the Gr.3 UAE 2,000 Guineas winner Kinglet and the Gr.1-placed Stakes winner Arethusa). The grandam, French Listed victrix Miss D’Ouilly (Bikala), is also the second dam of the Gr.2-winning half-siblings Joviality (Cape Cross) and Bonfire (Manduro) and Italian Listed scorer Moonlight Red (Kheleyf). The third dam is the French Listed winner Miss Satin (Satingo), whose seven successful progeny include the Gr.1-winning miler Miss Satamixa (Linamix) and the Gr.3-placed Mrs Annie (Bolkonski; dam of the Gr.3-winning trio Mister Sicy, Mister Riv and Manninamix and third dam of the dual Classic winner Blue Bunting).

Demisemiquaver has a two-year-old Oasis Dream colt and her yearling is her eighth consecutive son, a colt by Cable Bay, to whom she returned last year. She is booked to visit Postponed in 2018, thus aiming to breed a three-parts-brother to Rare Rhythm himself.

Rayya (Tiz Wonderful) made all from her inside draw, quickening clear down the straight for an easy win, reversing the form of the Listed UAE 1,000 Guineas and the previous month’s trial, in both of which she finished second behind Winter Lightning (Shamardal), with Expressiy (Siyouni) third.

Her dam, Spread (Coronado’s Quest), won at two and had her first foal at four. Rayya is her seventh produce and all bar one of the others has won, including the US Gr.3 winner Curlin Road (Curlin). Spread is a half-sister to the Gr.3-placed Stakes winner Network (Pulpit) and the French Listed-placed Zanoubia (Our Emblem), out of Broadcast (Broad Brush), a winning full-sister to the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Concern and Gr.3 winner Tennis Lady. South African RACING AND BREEDING NEWS

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

BUSY TURFFONTEIN CARD ON SATURDAYTurffontein’s outside track is host to a 12-race programme tomorrow, featuring the Gr.2 Gauteng Guineas for colts and fillies and another four Stakes races in support. Both Guineas events have attracted top-class fields and, with international buyers showing interest in the classy Dingaans winner Monks Hood (Querari), it is hard to believe that he is not favourite to win this coveted prize for Mary Slack and trainer Alistair Gordon. Incidentally, Kong Kong’s emerging star, Singapore Sling, won the Dingaans en route to bigger things.

In the fillies’ equivalent, Mike de Kock has five runners, but his stable elect looks to be the imported daughter of now South African-based Canford Cliffs, Fish River. De Kock has a strong hand in the main supporting feature, the Gr.2 Hawaii Stakes, with his free-running Sir David Baird ideally suited to the stiff seven furlongs. The son of Dynasty is a big, rangy sort and will be hard to peg back if allowed an easy lead.

GR.3 VASCO PRIX DU CAP, 1400M The lone non-Stakes runner in the line-up, Elusive Heart, upset the order of things when she made all to register a stylish first black-type success at the expense of her flashier peers.

Jockey Richard Fourie took Glen Kotzen’s three-year-old to the front shortly after the start and that is where she stayed. At the top of the straight, he still had a ton of horse under him, while Final Judgement (Judpot) and Seattle Gold (Sail From Seattle), her closest pursuers, were already flat to the boards. The favourite Rose In Bloom (Gimmethegreenlight), who cornered well off the pace, gathered momentum going through the 200m mark, but her efforts were in vain as the winner powered home strongly by just over two lengths. Rose In Bloom again had to settle for a minor cheque, as she has done in a number of Graded Stakes this

summer, most recently when third behind Snowdance (Captain Al) in the Gr.1 Majorca. Miss Katalin (Trippi) also finished with a flourish and was just over a neck back in third, making it a clean sweep for the three-year-olds.

Coincidentally, the winner has the honour of being the sole conqueror of superstar Snowdance, having defeated the now dual Gr.1 winner by almost a length over the course and distance in September.

Owned by the Chrigor Stud and Peter de Beyer, she is by the latter’s underrated stallion Elusive Fort. The Champion son of Fort Wood is making his mark as a sire of fillies, Elusive Heart being the fourth female amongst his five Stakes winners who are headed by Gr.1 winners Siren’s Call and Lauderdale.

Bred by John Everett’s Narrow Creek Stud and a R100,000 graduate of the BSA Val de Vie Yearling Sale, she is the first foal of the juvenile winner Redeem My Heart (Indigo Magic), who has a two-year-old filly by Oracy and a yearling by Querari. The grandam, Stormy Peace (Al Mufti), is a half-sister to the multiple Stakes winner Stormy Appeal (Kilconnel), who incidentally has produced Stakes winners Fort Petersburg and Stormy Coast to the cover of Fort Wood, while his son Dynasty is the sire of another in Stormy Eclipse.

The last-named is now plying his trade in Port Elizabeth, following the ongoing dispersal of Mayfair Speculators’ horses, and he won a conditions race in good fashion for his new owners, breeder Dr Ashley Parker of Ascot Stud and Gavin Venter, former jockey and now assistant to trainer Tara Laing. The grey Stormy Eclipse was a spectacular yearling, selling to Mayfair Speculators for R2-million at the 2013 BSA National Yearling Sale.

LISTED LADY’S PENDANT, 1200MIt turned out to be a good afternoon at Fairview last Friday for Tara Laing, as she bagged the feature race as well with Star Burst Galaxy. Undeterred by a powerful Cape challenge and the threat of stormy weather, Laing had Star Burst Galaxy in fine fettle and the four-year-old daughter of Var led all the way to score an easy win over the straight six furlongs. A look back showed that she

SOUTH AFRICA RACING & BREEDING NEWS ~ CONTINUED

has only been out of the money once in a career that dates back to December 2015, when she made a winning debut as a two-year-old for Mike Azzie at Turffontein before she was transferred to Port Elizabeth to join Laing.

Bred by Dr Ian Heyns, Star Burst Galaxy is out of the triple winner Majestic Star (Doowaley), who is a half-sister to Justin Snaith’s promising 2017 Gr.3 Victress Stakes winner Star Express.

Originally purchased by Mayfair Speculators at the 2015 CTS Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale for R800,000, Star Burst Galaxy changed hands recently following the unbundling of the former SA Champion owners. She now races for Cape-based Etienne Braun and Paul Loomes, who resides in KZN.

She has now won seven races with 12 places from 20 starts for earnings of R577,050.

NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCEStaying in Port Elizabeth, Carlita stole the limelight in the five-furlong Juvenile Plate for fillies when giving weight and a sound beating to her peers. Having landed something of a coup on her debut in early January, the cheaply-bought daughter of Oratorio was then shipped to Cape Town to compete in the Tattersalls Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes run on SunMet Day. There she competed against the blue-blooded Cape-based juveniles and performed with tremendous credit when runner-up to the imported Snitzel colt Traces.

Carlita was bred by Piemonte Stud, the family-run KZN-based stud headed by current TBA Chairman Lee Scribante. A good-topped yearling, she was offered by Piemonte at last year’s KZN Yearling Sale, but failed to attract the attention of buyers, eventually being knocked down to trainer Alan Greeff and former jockey Andrew Fortune for R35,000. She is the fifth produce of the imported Point Given mare Auburn Annio, also dam of a winner by Windrush in Thrill Factor. She comes from a fabulous Argentinian family, being a daughter of the dual Champion filly Southern Spring (Southern Halo), a half-sister to a host of black-type performers, including Gold Spring, who won 14 races including three Gr.1s. Auburn Annio has a yearling by Crusade, to be offered for sale at the BSA KZN Yearling Sale in July, and is in foal to the new Galileo stallion Flying The Flag.

TBA APPOINTMENTIn line with their focus on maintaining open lines of communication and serving the needs of thoroughbred breeders, Bloodstock South Africa has announced the appointment of Alistair Gordon as their Vendor Liaison Officer. An accomplished and respected horseman, and a trainer of top horses over 45

years, he will be visiting vendors throughout the year with the intention of building bridges and enhancing the relationship between Bloodstock South Africa and breeders.

In welcoming him to South Africa’s oldest sales company, BSA CEO Michael Holmes said that the intention was always to continue innovating in finding best local solutions for both buyers and vendors.

“It is no secret that we are trading in tough times. Adding value for buyers means ensuring world-class and professional sales facilities and a quality product. Although overlapping in some respects, our breeders also face their own challenges. They live, eat and sleep the process for 365 days a year. We need to ensure that we are providing them with the tools to optimise their returns, that is, in respect of a spectrum of needs from sales programming, right through to infrastructural support.”

Holmes went on to add that Gordon’s appointment was key to strengthening ties between BSA and breeders: “Alistair is an extremely popular and well-liked member of the racing and breeding community. He knows and understands the game and speaks the language of the industry. He is looking forward to the challenge.” Gordon commences in his new position with immediate effect.

SALES NEWSSouth Africa’s two sales companies, Bloodstock South Africa and Cape Thoroughbred Sales, announced the launch of their respective April Yearling Sale catalogues which are now both online. Although close together, the two sales should appeal to different markets, CTS having already completed the offering of their elite group of yearlings at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in January. Their April Yearling Sale is thus a diverse group of yearlings, with the 343 lots broken into three distinct “sessions” over two days of selling. The later-maturing blue-bloods sell in session one (117 Lots), starting at 17h30 (local) on Thursday, 12th April and sessions two and three selling the following day.

The online catalogue is on: http://capethoroughbredsales.com/sales/2018-ays

The action then moves to the TBA’s sales complex outside Johannesburg, where Bloodstock South Africa hosts South Africa’s longest standing yearling Sale, the 526-lot National Yearling Sale. Almost certainly the most representative sale of the year, this event will have, with a few exceptions, the entire breeding spectrum of South Africa and thus brings a diverse offering of studs and stallions.

The National Yearling Sale starts each of the three days of selling at 11:30, the first day being 24th April with the select session based on breeder nominations. The online catalogue can be viewed at: http://www.bsa.co.za/catalogue.php?url=2018nys

In the lead up to the sales, we will be reporting on developments and highlighting horses of particular interest.

Meanwhile at Meydan, we witnessed a particularly impressive British raid midway through the month, when trainers Charlie Fellowes, Denis Coakley and Richard Hannon all secured their first Dubai World Cup Carnival wins with Prince Of Arran (GB), Hors De Combat (GB) and Oh This Is Us (IRE), respectively.

Charlie Appleby’s fruitful season in Dubai continued on that same night, with Gold Town (GB) landing the Gr.3 UAE 2,000 Guineas in taking fashion, while just yesterday the Highclere Stud and Floors Farming-bred Rare Rhythm (GB) was victorious in the Gr.3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy.

Finally, Juddmonte was given cause to celebrate in February when Immortalised (GB) added the UAE to the list of countries in which Frankel (GB) has sired a winner, returning victorious at Al Ain. This was quickly backed up by Simply Brilliant’s aforementioned win at Sha Tin on the 18th, taking the total number of countries on Frankel’s CV to 12.

Supasundae favoured ahead of fellow British-breds for StayersNewsells Park Stud are enjoying a particularly good time of it at the moment. Not only did they breed the aforementioned Hors De Combat and Immortalised, but they head into the Cheltenham Festival hopeful of taking the Gr.1 Stayers’ Hurdle with Supasundae (GB), who last year represented the first half of a Festival double for the Hertfordshire operation. The second came courtesy of Penhill (GB), who also holds an entry in the Stayers’, along with fellow Gr.1-winning British-bred hopefuls Sam Spinner (GB) and Yanworth (GB).

Supasundae won the Gr.1 Irish Champion Hurdle in February’ but trainer Jessica Harrington has expressed little concern over the extended three-mile trip: “I am pretty certain he will stay in the Stayers’ Hurdle. I don’t think the three miles will be a problem.”

Harrington also reported that she was happy with the progress of the Eskdale Stud-bred Sizing John (GB), commenting, “I am not going to put too much pressure on him because I want him on the day, not the day before. I do not want to be leaving anything behind.”

For a month during which the attention of the British racing media turns so resolutely to the Cheltenham Festival entries and their preparations, it is encouraging to note how often we have been distracted by the impressive feats of British-trained and bred thoroughbreds on the Flat across the world in February, writes Minty Farquhar.

British exports excel on global stageHartnell (GB) kicked off the run of top-level success when taking the C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield on the 10th February. This win represented a third Gr.1 in Australia for the Darley homebred. The 45,000gns Tattersalls Book 2 yearling purchase subsequently finished third in the Gr.2 Peter Young Stakes on the 24th, with trainer James Cummings insisting he “was not fully wound up for that race.” He will now be aimed at the Gr.1 Australian Cup on 10th March.

The following Saturday, fellow British export Redkirk Warrior (GB) hit the headlines when snatching the Gr.1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes in the dying strides, prompting trainer David Hayes to raise the possibility of a trip to the horse’s native Britain in the coming months for a tilt at the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes. It would be a fitting tribute to his breeder, Lenore Peacock of Manor House Stud in Yorkshire, who, it was announced yesterday, has sadly passed away aged 97.

Delight for agent Donald in Australia and Hong Kong Redkirk Warrior was purchased for overseas duties by Alastair Donald of SackvilleDonald. The chesnut sprinter was not the only one of Donald’s purchases to land a big prize in February, however.

The British bloodstock agent also enjoyed a fruitful month in Hong Kong. A double courtesy of Dundonnel, (formerly with Roger Charlton) and Simply Brilliant (formerly named Senator with Richard Fahey) at Sha Tin’s Chinese New Year fixture preceded a second Gr.1 win for Hong Kong Cup Champion Time Warp in the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup last Sunday. The Lanwades Stud-bred gelding became the first horse to break the two minute mark over one mile two furlongs at Sha Tin.

Kirsten Rausing commented after the race: “Time Warp’s dam and grandam were also bred by Lanwades and are still here. His dam has a now four-year-old own-brother, Glorious Forever, twice a winner for Ed Walker and highly rated, but now in Hong Kong. The mare’s three-year-old, Jack Crow, was second in both his starts at two and her now two-year-old, Heatwave, has been retained and is with Sir Mark Prescott. She has no yearling, but is due to foal to Oasis Dream.

“He is a magnificent testament to his late, much lamented sire Archipenko, whose untimely loss in December last is still very keenly felt. From limited opportunities he has so far sired three individual Gr.1 winners.”

British trainers land the spoils in Middle EastBritish trainers notched up an impressive string of wins in the Middle East in February.

GBRI’s Team British Racing initiative to promote the excellence of British thoroughbreds outside of Europe has got off to a spectacular start this year, with homebred Tip Two Win (GB) and Tattersalls Autumn HIT graduate Intisaab (GB) both returning victorious on HH The Emir’s Trophies and Sword Day at Doha.
