E-SAFETY CORNER

We know that children, particularly younger children, can be bothered by

things they see online, and filters can be a helpful tool in reducing the chances

of coming across something upsetting.

Remember that filtering is only part of the solution

No filter or parental controls tool is 100% effective, and many of the risks that young people face online are

because of their own and other’s behaviour. It is therefore important to talk to your children about staying safe

online and make sure they know that they can turn to you if they get into any difficulty.

Awards and Certificates outside of school

Well done to Jack Wise for his outstanding achievement at the Premier Sport

Gymnastics club

Congratulations to Charlie Kidd for his outstanding achievement at the Premier

Sport Fencing Club

Services that are popular with young people also provide tools that are helpful to activate in addition to filters.

Find out more about safety tools on popular online services.

Devices that connect to your home internet

In addition to content filtering offered by your ISP, many devices such as games consoles, smartphones and

tablets have their own parental controls, for example to limit spending or restrict access to apps based on age

rating. Likewise, many web browsers have built-in tools and features to help you control the kinds of content

users can view. You can find out more about this in our Parents’ Guide to Technology.

Staying safe when out and about

If children are taking their devices out of the home, it's worth bearing in mind that they could connect to public

wifi, for example, in a shop, cafe or restaurant. Look out for the Friendly WiFi symbol which shows that the wifi

has filters in place to limit access.

WILLOW CLASS

It has been lovely to welcome everyone back after the holiday. Thank you to Chloe, Anna and Juno who gave our

dinosaurs such a lovely holiday, too!

This week, our focus has been Chinese New Year and we have had so much fun learning about how this festival is

celebrated. We read the story of the Chinese Zodiac and we recalled so many details of the story. Our focus in

Maths has been ordinal numbers, and we have ordered the animals from ‘The Great Race’. We have also written

our own versions of the story, and everyone is showing such improvement in their writing.

It has been a hard-working, busy and fun-filled week- well done everyone!

Next week we will be enjoying Book Week. Can we please remind everyone to bring in their favourite book if they

haven’t already done so. We will keep the books in school all week and we will be doing a range of activities

linked to them. We look forward to sharing some more amazing work!

MAPLE CLASS

Our focus in literacy this week has been to write a recount of the things we did during the holidays. It was really

interesting to read about all the fun and exciting things the children did during the holidays and they used time

Page 5: Friday 23rd February 2018 Issue 20 - Brigstock Primary · looking at Cinquains which are 5 line poems. They have very specific features that the children have had to stick to when

conjunctions to great effect. We also wrote some instructions about how to make a pancake. The children had

great fun trying to work out how to write clear and concise instructions.

In Maths we have been looking at shape and the children have enjoyed going on a shape hunt around school.

The children have continued to work hard in science and have enjoyed learning about animals, their habitats,

their structure and what they eat.

The children all had a great time during our pancake race on Tuesday afternoon and they all performed to their

best with some great flipping!

Finally please could the children bring in their favourite book (named) for Tuesday 27th February for our activities

relating to World Book Day.

CHERRY BLOSSOM

Our first week back means we have started a new topic in Science, Maths and Literacy. In Literacy, we have been

looking at Cinquains which are 5 line poems. They have very specific features that the children have had to stick

to when writing their own. They then copied them onto water colour paper and illustrated them beautifully.

In Maths, everyone has been using a written method to multiply. Year 3’s started off with TO X O and some have

moved on to HTO X O. Year 4’s have all managed to multiply HTO X O and some have looked at the shortened

method now as well. A really tricky method that everybody has worked hard to understand.

We have started looking at The Water Cycle in Science this week, we started off by thinking about how and why it

rains then went on to think about where the water goes once is does. The children learnt lots of scientific phrases.

Our favourite event of the week was obviously our pancake racing, I’m really pleased that everyone took part and

encouraged their friends.

OAK CLASS

In literacy we have continued to think about passive and active sentences. We have rehearsed the skill of taking

notes. The children were limited to selecting 20 words per section when reading about the Shang Dynasty; this

really made them think about the key words that were needed. Over the next few weeks we will continue our

focus on a range of sentences starters to ensure we avoid unnecessary repetition and help to engage the reader

in our factual reports.

Page 6: Friday 23rd February 2018 Issue 20 - Brigstock Primary · looking at Cinquains which are 5 line poems. They have very specific features that the children have had to stick to when

We have calculated perimeter and area this week focusing on compound shapes as well as moving on to an

investigation about the volume of different containers.

In Science we have started the topic ‘Earth and Space’. We had a very interesting discussion as to how we can

prove the earth and other planets in our solar system are spherical, although some did want to prove otherwise!

In RE we looked at the religions and the buildings we will be seeing in our Faith Tour next week. A reminder that

the children will need a strictly vegetarian lunch and ALL children need a headscarf.

On Thursday we were all very excited with the unveiling of the ‘I pad suitcase’. It was wonderful to use these to

research and identify answers about the location of China and surrounding countries. A big thank you to the PFA

for funding this purchase. They were a real asset to our geography lesson and we look forward to using them

again.
