Hello Hall 13 residents!

A big welcome to all freshmen, seniors and exchange students! I hope you all have had an extremely fulfilling semester thus far. The publications committee proudly presents to you this newsletter to recap the events and milestones in semester one.

As a residential hall, I think we are all very privileged to have a hall as conducive as ours to study and comfortable as ours to sleep. But I want Hall 13 to be more than just another hall. I want Hall 13 to be a place where many strong bonds are formed with the people around us through the many events organised and competitions such as the up-coming Hall Olympiad, a place where we feel like we belong, a place we can look back upon many years from now and feel happy and proud to have been affiliated with – I want Hall 13 to be a place called “home”.

The year started off with a bang at Hall 13’s Freshmen Orientation Camp 2010 at Aloha Changi Resort . The FOC committee managed to make the five and a half day camp a huge success with through cohesive bonding, fun, laughter and fostering of the Hall 13 spirit.

From then on, a string of events followed, pioneered by Mid-Au-tumn Festival where many residents enjoyed playing the games and ate the sumptuous mooncakes and supper feast prepared. Hall 13 residents had a taste of the life of the glamorous at our very own Dinner & Dance themed Viva La Vegas where four heart-throbbing couples from the orientation groups took the stage. They sashayed, cat walked and mesmerised the crowd with their dance moves. To satisfy our late night hunger pangs, our hall also had a supper-hop event to popular supper joints in the east. Resi-dents also had a walk down memory lane at the Back-to-School bazaar where old-school memories were brought back through the games and decorations. The cultural talents of Hall 13 shone through the many singing performances to entertain the residents.

Also, I would like to wish all Hall 13 IHG players all the best for the upcoming Hall Olympiad starting 5 January. It is indeed very heart-warming to see so many of our players training hard on the field and concentrating so intensely during their recreational game practices. Let’s all show support for Team Thirteen by com-ing down to matches as they do Hall 13 proud this coming January.

The next semester promises to be an equally exciting and activity-packed semester, with events such as Talentime, Hall Production, Tan Attack and Overseas Adventure Expedition just to mention a few! Do keep a look out for all these events and more coming your way in semester two! All the best for your upcoming exams! Gambateh!

Cheers!

Amin

For those running buffs out there who run every day, you can skip this article , you won’t be needing this.

This article is for: 1. People who run probably two or three times every fortnight2. Guys who start panicking 2 wveeks before their IPPT test.3. Procrastinators (me!)

If any one of the 3 types describes you, read this for your own good - especially 2 and 3. We all know NTU is a built on a hill so if you do not want to die half-way through a run I suggest that you take a look at the routes below.

Route 3 (A + B + C + D)-5.4kmThere should be no problem navi-gating around this route. It’s just a whole round around the campus. Just remember not to turn out at the Jalan Bahar exit or you’ll end up in PIE. Similar to route 2, you will encounter slopes of different steepness. Definitely a step up in difficulty from route 2.

Route 1 (A + B) - 3.5kmWe all know this route. This is basically the route that Bus B takes. Nice gentle slopes. Listen to the rhythmic sounds of the nearby live-firing area as your feet pound away. Guys can reminisce about our Army days.

Route 2 (A + B + C) - 4.7kmAfter a long day in school who would want to run pass north and south spine again? Take route 2 to cover a moderate distance and skipping both north and south Spine. Tough v. Slopes vary from gentle to steep. Steeper slopes near the heart of the campus. Take this if you want a not-so-challeng-ing challenge.

Route 4 (B) - 2.5kmBonus round. For guys who want to train for your 2.4km. Generally gentle up/down slope depending on which direction you take. Only problem is the rather steep slope along Nanyang Walk, the stretch between halls 3 and 16 and NIE.

Question 1: How is hall life for you generally? How are you involved in hall activities?

K: Hall life has been fun for me so far because I am quite heavily involved in hall activities. I am currently in the biz mag and sports sub-com, and a few ad-hoc events like DnD and OE.

V: it is fun and happening so far, until I injured myself (laughs).

CCC: What happened?!?!

V: Oh, I tore my ligament during training, but I’ll be well after a month or two, according to the doctor.

CCC: So what other hall activities are you involved in?

V: I’m also in DnD main com, Cheerleading biz mag, Welfare subcom, and hall FOC GL for next year!

Question 2: Has it been different after being crowned the King and Queen?

K: About the same, maybe just a little more teasing from friends.

V: Yeah! Making fun of us ( laughs together with Kane)

Question 3: What do you think is the best feature about yourself?

K: My eyes! Because they are the window to my soul.

V: My smile! Because I think it is endearing, and makes me look more approachable.

Question 4: Any tips in maintaining figure/looks?(Both laugh sheepishly)

V: Before or after pageant? (Both laugh again)

V: Have to watch our diet during pageant period. After pageant, just resume back to

normal.

K: Or even more than normal! Wash face

regularly.

V: Exercise Regularly too.

Question 5: What do you look for in your significant other?

V: Dependable, not very particular about looks. Preference for those guai guai type.

K: Guai also. (Ponders)

CCC: What about height restraints?

K: Height isn’t really an issue for me. Actually, a person with a good character is more important, looks are not a main concern.

Question 6: What is the first thing about a guy/girl that will catch your attention?

V: Broad shoulders, because it gives me a sense of security!

K: Long wavy hair. No reason.

Question 7: Any other interesting things about yourself?

V: I was in modern contemporary dance from secondary school to JC.

K: I play badminton, and I was in canoeing in JC.

Demographics:Kane, 21 years old, was from RJC, and is cur-rently a year 1 student in MAE. Vinette, 19 years old, was from HCI, and majors in Business.

Hall 13’s annual Freshmen Orientation Camp 2010 took place in August this year at Fairy Point Chalet, Changi, with five days of fun, laughter, sweat and tears, as they competed to be the best OG this year.

Day 1 passed with freshmen getting to know one another through various interesting ice breaker games as well as creating their flag identity. The next day, their bonds and strengths as an OG were tested through station games situated around the campsite. Freshmen also got to make a ‘Secret Pal’ from another OG with just the sense of touch and hearing as they were blindfolded. As night fell, the freshmen were introduced to their very own initiation night, where they were led blindfolded around camp under the watchful eyes of the seniors.

On day 3, OGs faced off as they compet-ed against one another in mass games and telematch. The guys were then given the chance to show their gallant sides as they brushed aside obstacles to find their Secret Pals in the evening.

Day 4 was packed as OGs raced around Singapore, completing various tasks that challenged both the mind and body. As the freshmen thought they were about to rest for the night, they were brought unsuspect-ingly in pairs to Hall 13’s spookiest horror house ever created for their Fright Night. The freshmen had a trip to Siloso Beach for their last day of the camp to enjoy the sun and the sea. In the evening, the freshmen made their way to The Chrevons for a night of perfor-mances put up by the different OGs and some couples who got to know each other through Secret Pal. Prizes were also given out to the best couple, best freshman for each OG as well as the best OG, which was Anouka! The highlight of the night was when everyone, freshmen and seniors, came together to form one giant circle and sang a series of songs to end off the night.

FOC 2010 may have a resounding end, but to the freshmen, it signified the start of the their exciting hall life for the rest of the year.

Lomography may sound foreign to many people, but is a hobby that is fast gaining popularity among photo enthusiasts. Lomographers have a strong passion in creativity and experimental analogue film photography, always abiding by their motto,

“Don’t think, just shoot” In lomography, light plastic cameras with plastic lens and films are used, often termed “toy cam-eras” These cameras produce slightly blurry images that have over-saturated colours and a vignetting effect (black corners). This is in contrast with the sharp pictures and accurate co-lour tones produced by the digital cameras prolif-erating in the market these days. One of the best things about lomography is the element of surprise it brings. Unlike digital cameras, one would not have the freedom to view or delete his photos right after taking it. It is only after developing the photos will the photographer get to see the final effects of each photograph. Although not all pictures will turn out perfect or expected, there is a beauty in such imperfections, drawing lomographers deeper into the

world of lomography.

Canteen 1Unagi TamaAs many of u knows, ever since it moved from

hall 14 to hall 1, the Japanese food restaurant has been very popular among the students. One of

the latest additions to its already scrumptious line of Japanese cuisine is the BBQ unagi hotplate. The dish basically consists of steamed egg filled with

grilled unagi with a mixture of onion and seaweed on a sizzling hotplate. It might look simple, but

once you get a taste of it together with aromatic rice and crabmeat salad, you will know that it is

a must-try. If I were to pick one of its downside it will be that there is not as many unagi as I ex-

pected for a price of 4.50 sgd. Overall, I would strongly recommend to any Japanese food lover who wish to taste something different.Canteen 1

Xiao Long Bao

Din Tai Fung in NTU? We wouldn’t be able to afford it

anyway! Fortunately, there is a stall tucked away in the

newly renovated, fully air-conditioned Hall 1 canteen

that will be able to satisfy your craving for xiao long

baos. At only $3.00 for 6, it is less than half the price

of those at Din Tai Fung and Crystal Jade. Unlike other

xiao long baos at this price, the ones sold by Chinese

Delicacies do not break easily and are able to retain

the soup. Taste wise, they are almost comparable to

the ones sold in the more famous restaurant. Students

at NTU never had it this good!

The shop is extensive, simple and pretty all

wrapped up in one. It has almost everything

and the choices are pure delights. There’s

definitely something for everyone here and

what’s more pertinent is the shoes collec-

tion. They look convincingly comfortable,

the quirky designs make you feel like you

will own a one-of-a-kind pair of shoes and

the prices, such a compelling draw. You

know you will trace your steps back here.

paintingdella.livejournal.com

thestylemafia.livejournal.com

TheStyleMafiaThis shop is exciting and enticing. Every collection throws you completely different styles which make you so intrigued with this shop. You can find an elegant long dress, a quirky long dress, a top perfect for a lazy school day and a top with wacky design just in one look. This is the place to stop by and you will never know what good things you will leave with.

clinked.livejournal.com

clinkedClean, edgy, untainted and most significantly, time-less. This shop works wonders, almost every piece looks exquisite and classy effortlessly. The time-lessness of this shop has such an appealing draw because it makes fashion easily achievable. What’s more, the seemingly expensive fashion line is actu-ally quite affordable so this is the place you know you don’t want to miss out on.
