KS3 FRENCHYEAR 9 S.E.N.AU SECOURS
SCHEME OF WORKBased on the Au secours course written by Valerie Laws and Richard Wall and with their
kind permission
The AU SECOURS course was written by VALERIE LAWS and RICHARD WALL and was first published by Mary Glasgow publications in 1990. It consists of a pupil’s book (ISBN 1 85234 285 4), a Teacher’s book (ISBN 1 85234 286 2) and 2 cassettes (ISBN 1 85234 287 0). Au secours Extra is a file of photocopiable homework tasks + cassette (ISBN 1 85234 455 5).
It is aimed at pupils working between Levels 1 and 3 of the National Curriculum, although most tasks are at Levels 1 and 2.
I use this course to meet the needs and learning styles of pupils on the Code of Practice register in Year 9 to enable them to be able to benefit from their language classes in mainstream
Each unit of work is self-contained and can be studied in any order
Each unit of work contains the most basic twenty or so words for that topic
The course requires little if any explanation of grammar
It is not necessary to have the course book in your school to be able to make use of these PowerPoint presentations. They can be used alongside the relevant topics in your existing courses at KS3 and KS4

EXPLOITATION OF POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONSThe PowerPoint presentations have been produced in an effort to engage and motivate pupils
through the necessary drilling of vocabulary so as to build confidence and competence.
Each presentation follows a similar format: Aims of the unit in English (1 slide)
At this point reference can be made to the relevance of the unit and cultural information can be given. Share your experiences with your pupils and give them opportunities to share any relevant experiences that they have had with the group
Vocabulary list in French and English (2 slides)Elicit from your pupils what key words/phrases they would expect to need. Write on board. Allow pupils to use dictionaries to look up key words and to write what they have found on the board. Reveal the slides of the required vocabulary for the unit of work and compare
Vocabulary drilling (number of slides varies from unit to unit)Vocabulary is broken down into short sub-sections. Clip art picture dissolves in. Choice of vocabulary flies in from left and right and teacher pronounces them.Pupils call out appropriate choice, teacher reinforces appropriate pronunciation and the whole group repeats it.At the end of each sub-section of vocabulary the same visuals appear without the choice of vocabulary. Pupils give their suggested answer and then the word/phrase appears letter by letter to confirm choice or elicit appropriate answer. Teacher reinforces appropriate pronunciation and the whole group repeats it.Wherever possible opportunities are given for pupils to construct sentences from groups of pictures and correct answers are revealed to reinforce language
