to have missed it but Mark’s summary below is excellent reading for those who missed it.

Next week’s speaker Dennis Kelly, also promises to be very interesting and I encourage

you to bring along any friends who may be interested in hearing him speak of his

adventures as a downed aviator in WW11.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Speaker: Simon Marriott — 3D Printing

Simon Marriott told us about a new technology that is changing the world of manufacturing—3D printing. Otherwise

known as additive manufacturing or sterolithography.

The technology was invented by an American, Chuck Hull,

in 1983. The idea was for a computer to read digital file

which contains the dimensions of the design, then to build

it by laying down then layers (usually plastic) one on top

of the other. As each layer is laid down, it is solidified.

The technology can be used to build objects, made of a

single piece, which cannot be fabricated in any other way.

3D printing was originally used only by engineers. It has

become very big in automotive manufacturing and the

aerospace industry. It is also very useful to make

prototypes of objects that are being developed for large-scale manufacture. The prototypes can be 'printed' straight

from the design and then tested. If a prototype works, a plant can tool up for large-scale production. If not, back to the

drawing board to design and 'print' another prototype until it is right.

In recent years, 3D printing has become available to consumers. You can buy a small printer at a major appliance store

for around $1,500. In a few years, that will probably halve. Your kids can now design something like a toy boat or a

chess piece on a computer, then print it.

At the high end of the market, large printers cost around $1m. Simon's business uses them to print articles for clients.

Simon outlined some of the many and varied uses of 3D printing:

Museums no longer send articles, like dinosaur bones, to other museums for exhibitions. Instead, they scan

them, email the digital file to their colleagues overseas, who then 'print' a high quality copy and display that.

Designers of all kinds of objects, from mobile phone holders to lampshades, design their product then sell it

online. Those who pay can download a digital file and use it to 'print' the object of their choice.

The armed forces use the technology to produce bullet proof body armour modelled to each soldier's body.

In the aerospace industry, aircraft components can be built of one part and made very light.

In medicine, information from x-rays and body scans are used to 'print' a life-size and perfectly accurate replica

of a part of the body. Surgeons can then study this to plan the best way to carry out an operation.

Also in medicine, the technology can be used to produce prosthetics that perfectly fit a person's body, and to

produce hearing aids and dental braces that fit a person perfectly.

Complex, one piece objects can be printed which cannot be manufactured by any other process. Often they are both

lighter and stronger than objects made by traditional methods. And it is often cheaper. And quicker, too. As a result,

manufacturing is returning to high labour cost countries.

The topic was so fascinating, and the presentation so interesting, that the discussion continued long after the meeting

had formally ended. On behalf of the Club, Matt Pollard expressed our gratitude to Simon. Incidentally, Simon is also a

Rotarian. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Richmond for 21 years and is a Past President.

President’s and Directors’ Reports

President Bob Lambert and President Elect Tony Boyd were both apologies as they were attending the changeover

function at the Rotary Club of Kew. In their absence, Vice-President Matt Pollard chaired the meeting.

Member’s Moment

In William Liew's absence, there was no Member's Moment. Hurry back William. We look forward to hearing from you then. In the meantime, your absence left more time for Simon Marriott's talk!
