Hello again everybody

Last week we changed our “Forum” format a little, keeping our director’s reports shorter

and playing a video that is a prequel to our guest speaker for next week, Dennis Kelly. We

are looking forward to his talk with great anticipation.

Thanks to everyone who completed the survey, and your committee will work on the

suggested changes so that our Forums (or whatever we call them) continue to be

interesting and informative.

Boroondara Cares met last Friday and there are a number of initiatives underway where

we are being asked to participate. (more about this later) It is good to see this group being

pro-active and well supported by our neighbour clubs.

This week is “changeover week” for many clubs and Tony Boyd and myself will be doing

the rounds of our cluster clubs, and so we are both apologies for this week’s meeting.

Our own Changeover is the 9th

of July, so can I please ask that members register with

Trybooking as soon as possible so that numbers and table bookings can be arranged in

plenty of time. The link is on your invitation.

That’s about all from me for this week.

Club Forum

The Club held its monthly forum, to hear directors' reports and discuss the Club's current and future projects

President's report: Bob Lambert began with a report on the recent

Rotary International Conference in Sydney. The Conference was held at

Olympic Park. There were 92 session rooms with various activities and

presentations. The Conference began with the traditional flag

ceremony, where the flags of all the countries in which Rotary operates

were paraded. Entertainment was provided by Marina Prior, the Ten

Tenors, Kamahl and the Deltones.

There were some serious messages from the Conference. The End Polio

Now campaign is close to attaining its goal. Rotary is seeking to raise

another half billion dollars to complete the work. A man named Bill

Gates has offered $200m of his own money in matching funds.

Two members of the Rotary Club of Pashupati in Nepal, Dipesh and

Pushtar Shar, attended the Conference. Pushtar is widely travelled. He

climbed Mt Everest in 2010 and is now trying to organise a bike ride around Australia. That Club is seeking help with

establishing a 'Great Himalayan Bike Trail'. Apparently, one person using the trail would provide employment for up

to six locals [Doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers? – Ed.]

At the local level, 9 members of the Club attended the recent District 9800 Assembly. The Swinburne Rotaract

launch was held last weekend, and Bob thanked those members who attended. The real work now begins – for both

them and us. Our Club has agreed to provide mentoring training. Boroondara Cares has issued a formal invitation

for us to join.

The Club changeover will be on Wednesday 9 July. There will be a three-course meal, wine and soft drinks for $55pp.

Please book through the TryBooking website. Payment by Direct Debit should be made to RC Yarra Bend (BSB:

633000 Account No.: 125276113). Please reference your Name and the Event Date. For further information contact

Irene Leung (Secretary) on 0415 587 088 or 9864 6014, or by email to [email protected].

International Director's report: Isabel Armer reported on the International avenue of service. The Club is working

with RC Pashupati on the Nepal project. Sister Anne Chapman, who spoke to our Club last year about her work in

Timor, is looking for further assistance from the Club, possibly by sponsoring a teacher for the village.

Vice-President's report: Matt Pollard, who will be in charge of Club Service next year, reported on activities in that area.

The Club is looking to establishing an award to recognise Service Above Self by members of the emergency services (fire

brigade, Police, ambulance and SES) in Boroondara. At the moment he is seeking sponsors. There is a possibility that

the Bendigo Bank will offer matching funds.

A survey of members' views was recently conducted—thanks to those who responded. This is an important sign of a

healthy club, with consultation and feedback to ensure our programs and activities remain relevant and interesting. A

summary of the survey responses is at the back of this Bulletin.

All members who responded feel that the meeting program is going well—thanks to David Shave. A number of

suggestions were made for topics for future meetings, namely, financial planning, members' personal recollections and

stories, local and local community groups talking to us about their activities.

A slim majority (53%) support the Club forum. A substantial number (40) suggested these be conducted quarterly.

Another suggestion is that the Bulletin be used for the dissemination of information, and the forum for discussion.

There is a strong view that meetings should be more tightly chaired, and that meetings finish at 8pm on schedule. The

consensus was director reports could be skipped in weekly meetings, except for announcements of upcoming events. If

necessary, dot point reports could be distributed. There was also a proposal that board papers be sent to all members.

Matt moved a vote of thanks to Bob Lambert for his successful leadership. This was his last Club forum as President.

New Generations Director's report: Anne Brown told a story about a young man who was helped through the

chaplaincy program. A student sponsored by the District, Lauren, will shortly be going on youth exchange to Germany.

Club Service Director's report: David Shave reported. He is hopeful of new members joining soon. In relation to the

speaker's program, he is looking for someone else to pick up this responsibility, possibly Jane Stott. He will need a

volunteer to arrange the program during his absence from 28 August to 1 October. Matt Pollard said that, in the coming

year, there will be an effort to spread around the Club service tasks to a greater extent.

David encouraged members and partners to attend on 2 July to hear the talk by Dennis Kelly.

Vocational Service Director's report: Justin Wibrow quoted ADG Bob Slater, who said that its vocational orientation is

what distinguishes Rotary from Lions and other service clubs. The mentoring program kicks off on 1 August.

Dennis Kelly – segment on ABC's 7.30 Report

In lieu of a Member's Moment, David Shave played us an item from the 7.30 Report on Dennis Kelly. He will be speaking to the Club on 2 July about his experiences in Lancasters in Bomber Command during World War Two. Dennis recently attended the D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

For those who missed it, here is a link to the 7.30 Report segment, which was broadcast on 5 June, on the ABC website.

Thought of the week – Irene Leung Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.

Camberwell Market Duty Roster for July to December 2014

The roster for our attendance at the Rotary Camberwell Sunday Market appears below. Members are asked to diarise their allocated duty. Remember, the Club is penalised if we fail to deliver on this duty, so please make a diary note now. If you cannot attend the market on the date allocated, you should arrange to swap duty with another member and advise Bill Chow well in advance as Bill is responsible for liaison with RC Balwyn.

Club Service - Survey of Members Yarra Bend Rotary June 2014

In accordance with our practice over recent years, we have surveyed members to ascertain their views on the

program and conduct of our meetings with a view to ensuring we continue to meet their expectations.

75% of Yarra Bend members responded to the survey which allows us to conclude that the findings are likely

representative of all members.

The Findings

100% of respondents were happy with the quality and variety of speakers being arranged. Some had suggestions for

additions to the program including:

Forecast trends;

Financial planning and medical speakers;

Swinburne Rotaract members on their priorities and projects;

Non-board members on items of general interest e.g. a member to present on a recent holiday or other endeavor;

Environmental management issues;

Other local community groups and issues in Richmond and Boroondara;

Contemporary issues in our society; and

Interactive workshops on marketing Rotary, attracting membership, social media.

Some recommendations were made for speakers and these have been passed to David.

In respect of the Club Forum held each month to enable optimum members understanding of and participation in

each Avenue of Service, a slim majority of respondents (53%) were happy with the existing format. Half of those

responding felt forums could be held quarterly rather than monthly and 40% felt that sessions should be structured

more tightly to focus on capturing member input rather than status reporting. Limiting the number of speakers at

each forum and rotating content was also supported.

The Member’s Moment concept and current format is strongly (61.5%) supported with a small number liking the

idea that topics should be Rotary related. The majority felt keeping to time was important and good chairing was

essential. There was a suggestion to allow more time Member’s Moment, but not at the expense of our usual

finishing time.

Respondents made a number of suggestions for overall meeting management:

Negotiate topic for member’s moment the week prior to allow sufficient time for longer presentations;

Keep meetings to time;

Seek more member input and less status reporting;

Allow good speakers to exceed time allocated;

Better meeting control by chairman; and

Invite partners more often.

The Bulletin is seen as a vehicle for improving communication and avoiding some time lost at meetings. Suggestions

include:

Include brief reports on each Avenue of Service to reduce need to updates at every meeting by Directors (100%);

Rotate a feature each week on the work of each director;

More photos and more fellowship opportunities;

Include upcoming Cluster and important District events; and

Bulletin, website and other tools all need to be part of an overall enhanced approach to communicating what we do.

The findings have been presented to the board and the incoming team under President Tony will implement changes responding to members’ views. Thanks to all those who took the time to complete the survey.
