At only 31, Mandel Hitzer has opened a successful, award-winning restaurant and gained national press for his river popup restaurant. His Exchange District restaurant, deer + almond is the conduit that lets Mandel give back to his city. Patrons of his restaurant can order a chicken plate where one dollar goes towards the St.Amant Foundation and is designated to the St.Amant Autism Program which is celebrating 10 years of service to children this year.

“Being part of the of the community downtown, I really want to give back to Winnipeg,” said Mandel. Coming from a family of six, family is important to Mandel. One of his brothers has autism and he knows the challenges that brings. The desire to help led him to the St.Amant Foundation. His brother does not have a connection to St.Amant. As a resident of Winnipeg Mandel is aware of the positive work St.Amant is doing. “I really believe in what you guys do,” he says. The money raised at deer + almond fills in gaps that funding doesn’t cover, such as iPads and communication apps for the children St.Amant supports.

In addition to providing sustenance for people who come and go in his Exchange District restaurant, Mandel has a big philanthropic heart. “I encourage everyone, if they have the ability, to give back. Every little bit counts.”

It just goes to show there are many creative ways to support a cause you believe in. Mandel’s chicken plates make a difference in the lives of children with autism by helping to:

• Create fun and happy learning experiences

• Improve communication, social and academic skills

• Make families more resilient

One of Mandel’s goals is to help people with disabilities have access to healthier foods as his brother complains about being only offered pop and chips at events and wishes for healthier options. There’s no doubt Mandel will see it through and make even more of a difference in the lives of many. “There is something spiritual for me about feeding people. It’s such an important part of life.”

Supporting children and adults to achieve their goals is not a new mission for St.Amant Foundation. However, every year, as we learn more about how to work with people with disabilities to identify their wants, needs, dreams and goals our job gets more interesting and more ambitious.

As St.Amant has seen a lot of change over the past year with a new President at the helm of the organization and changes in many leadership positions, St.Amant Foundation has also seen change as a result. From the board and staff perspective, we see this change as very positive. Our new President, John Leggat has been working hard on the next 5-year strategic plan for St.Amant which in turn ignites the Foundation to work on our goals to ensure that we can support St.Amant to meet its strategic objectives.

This past year, we broke ground on a new 4-season cottage that will enable many of the children and adults that we support to have holiday and recreational time without the extensive planning and barriers that often make these activities a challenge. This cottage is solely supported by you, our donors and it meets many of the needs and dreams that individuals we support have identified. Your support saw the renovation and grand opening of the indoor pool located at River Road Place made into a sensory pool – the first of its kind in Western Canada. Throughout the year, your donations have provided new furnishings and recreation equipment to the 60 homes supported by St.Amant throughout the community. A home of your own that brings comfort and pride cannot ever be underestimated.

The past year was a banner year for donations that supported new technology. You donated iPads and gave money that purchased new, cutting-edge communication equipment and software. Some of the people we support who have limited range of motion and are non-verbal can now move a computer mouse with the use of a sensor sticker on their forehead or hand. These kinds of breakthrough technology that your donations have supported, give a voice, choice and independence to

people that have always struggled to let their needs and desires be known. In addition to your support to technology, you also generously supported the St.Amant Research Centre. Through research specific to improving health and wellbeing for people with developmental disabilities and autism, the research centre completed 3 projects in collaboration with St.Amant School that address: challenging behaviour, understanding medications and their effects in the classroom, communication for choice making as well as research projects about caregiver safety, ageing with a disability and a one-year study on the outcomes of applied behaviour analysis for pre-school aged children.

This report touches only on the highlights of this year, but we could fill a book with success stories. We are grateful that you choose to support St.Amant and look forward to working together to make a huge difference in the lives of the children and adults with developmental disabilities and autism that we all support.
