A message from our outgoing President...
For CCOC, it has always been about more than just affordable housing. We got our start, more than 45 years ago, from neighbourhood activists that had a vision for a complete, inclusive residential neighbourhood with a great quality of life. Affordable housing is a key part of that, but so are walkability, public transit and transportation, safety, access to services, a vibrant mainstreet, and all the other things that make up a good downtown neighbourhood. That’s why CCOC is always pushing to connect the
dots between affordable housing and other elements of a just and inclusive society.
In 2018 we revived our Policy, Research and Action Committee (PRAC!), an ad hoc committee that pops up when needed – and lately there’s a lot to look at. PRAC is connecting the dots between the City’s transportation plans and housing affordability: working with allies, they were successful in getting the City to hold 20 parcels of land aside for affordable housing de-velopment near light rail transit stations. Together they were also successful in getting the City to add $15 million to their budget for affordable housing development. Next on the to-do list is to prioritize affordable housing in all City planning and development approvals through an inclusionary zoning bylaw. We are also trying to influence the City to take a more systems-level approach to dealing with housing and homelessness: because if you can’t connect the dots, you can’t see the full picture.
There was another big change for CCOC in 2018: we created the Tenant and Community Engagement (TCE) committee, supported on a staff level by an aligned department. TCE has a strong mandate to look at inclusion,

Councillor Catherine McKenney's Minto Park Sale The sale takes place Saturday, June 8 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Minto Park (315 Elgin Street). Renting a table costs $10, with proeeds going to The Well and The Door Youth Centre. This community yard sale has over 80 tables of household items, plants, crafts, and artwork. To reserve a table, please contact: [email protected].
Canada Day - Office ClosedThe CCOC office will be closed on Monday, July 1 for
Canada Day. We will re-open at 9:00 am on Tuesday, July 2. Le bureau de CCOC sera fermé le lundi 1 juillet pour la fête du Canada.

2019 Plant ProgramDespite a cold spring, the CCOC Plant Program was lucky to have a weekend of beautiful weather. Staff and volunteers delivered 3,799 plants over two days in the first weekend of May. Over 375 tenants took advantage of the chance to order free flowers, herbs and vegetables from CCOC and add natural beauty to our buildings. Thanks to the amazing 82 volunteers who helped make the day a success!

President's Address continued . . .diversity, and equity. Not all voices are properly heard in all the work we do. We need people from all back-grounds who are already part of CCOC to be welcomed and valued at all our decision-making tables and in all our neighbourhoods. TCE will also take charge of our environmental sustainability mandate, building on the fantastic and innovative work we have done so far. Because the most important dot to connect is the big blue dot we all live on: our one and only planet.
Every drain we unblock, every lease we sign, every window we wash and every bill we pay is an important part of the work staff does, day in and day out. But each one of those actions is connected to a bigger picture, and a bigger effect CCOC has on Ottawa.Because an affordable home isn’t enough unless it’s in a good neigh-bourhood. A new apartment isn’t enough unless it’s in a supportive and inclusive community. It’s our job to connect these dots and draw a better Ottawa.
We are seeing the results of our work. Community organizations across Ottawa are leveraging each oth-ers’ knowledge and seeing the tangible value of working together. From these collective efforts, the picture is forming. Housing is being talked about more than ever and the opportunity is now.
. . . Introducing your 2019-2020 PresidentA former tenant, Dallas was elected the new President of CCOC and CCHC's Board of Directors for the 2019-2020 term. Originally from the prairies, Dallas came to Ottawa attracted by the array of progressive NGOs/non-profits, and has spent over a decade working for national non-profit associations focused on affordable housing.
She believes passionately that the non-profit housing sector is best placed to provide the kind of rental housing that cities, including Ottawa, need much more of: secure, family-friendly, affordable homes close to transit. When she’s not talking housing, you’ll find Dallas at the curling rink, on the ski trails or unsuccessfully trying to get her baby to eat his vegetables.

Congratulations to this year's Doug DesBrisay Good Neighbour Award Winner: Sharon Smith
We'd like to give a big congratulations to this year's Doug DesBrisay Good Neighbour Award Winner Sharon Smith. Sharon was nominated by two of her neighbours for always thoughtfully looking out for them. She picks up groceries for her neighbours, takes care of their cats, and checks in on them when they're unwell. In the words of her neighbours, "She's such a caring, lovely, warm person. She really deserves everything in the world."
Seven other tenants were nominated by their neighbours for the award: Shamso Hashi, Roger Beauprie, Roseanne Renauld, Deborah Hitsman, Michelle Boyer, David Eadie, and Barbara Lagace.
Our Newest Lifetime Member
Robert Smythe was presented with a Lifetime Membership at our AGM in May. Robert is a brilliant local historian who worked on CCOC's history project. Robert is an affordable housing advocate, Centretown champion, and a tenant at CCOC. We appreciate Robert's dedication to his communities over the years.
After about 40 years of being involved with CCOC, Glenn Allen is retiring from the Board of Directors. Over his time, Glenn has worked in the Maintenance Department, been a tenant, and spent many years on the Board. We gifted Glenn this old window to look through and think of CCOC.
