The Risk Matrix - What it is and How to Use it to Protect Your Business

Join Nic Bolto, Entrepreneurship Facilitator, on the mechanics of a risk matrix and how to use one to protect your business.

What is a Risk Matrix?

A risk matrix (also called a risk diagram) visualizes risks in a diagram. In the diagram, the risks are divided depending on their likelihoodand their effects or the extent of damage, so that the worst case scenario can be determined at a glance.

In this sense, the risk matrix should be seen as a result of the risk analysis and risk evaluation and is therefore an important componentof your project and risk management.

Other NewsThe Future of Retail: Trends for 2021

The pandemic changed the retail landscape in a big way. And there was a boom in spending over Christmas

Consumers are increasingly comfortable shopping online, which means retailers will need to have an e-commerce presence to see success in 2021.Consumers expect to be able to interact with your brand from their mobile devices, and they will continue looking to influencers for brand and product recommendations.

But not all retailers are benefiting from the spending boom. While spending on food and household goods is well above pre-COVID levels, clothing, department stores, and cafes are alllagging. How this will play out for the remainder 2021 remains to be seen, however business confidence levels are stable and technological progress and a stable political environment willensure that a long-term boom will follow once the economy recovers from the pandemic.

Grants and FundingOne question I often get asked is "Is there any government funding available to help me start my business?"

Grants and funding are generally provided for growing a business or for projects, with a beginning and end, rather than to start or run your business or organisation. There are a range of granloan and assistance programs, such as New Business Assistance with NEIS, offered by the Australian government through the Department of Education, Skills and Employment, as well asState Government programs , and those provided at a local level by Local Councils, all of which actively support the small business community - and these sources should certainly beinvestigated. Even if funding is not immediately available there are many free or subsidised forms of assistance you can access.

If you are specifically looking for funding to get a business up and running, you may want to consider crowdfunding - the practice of funding a project or venture by raising money from a largenumber of people who each contribute a relatively small amount. Or look at attracting investors. But make sure you have a solid business plan prepared.
