Dear friends in Chailey,Poor, poor Ned, I hope he never finds the telephonenumber of “Rectory Rocking Horse Rescue,” becauseif he did, they would be there in a flash demandinganswers as to why Ned has become confused andmuddled, whilst in our care. He is very unsure as towho he really is. The reason why is this. Four moregrandchildren visited this week-end, plus Neds maincarer and each one of them gave him yet anothername.

We had the three year old identical twin brothers riding him backwards, forwards, upside down “look Grandpa no hands, no feet,” no teeth and “ watch round the worldGrandpa” I am assured that this is an equestrian term! The eldest sibling nearlycried because Ned was not allowed to go home with her. They traversed afar. Onechild went to Devon on Neds back, the twins were last seen heading off to Cyprus, their favourite posting and the eldest sibling was still pleading to be allowed to showNed the RAF. The cousin with the sad eyes slowly shook her head at me as thepleading intensified. It couldn’t ever happen. At this point my wife swears she sawNed wink.

Then there was poor Tippy. The rescued dog on wheels from the tip. I almost heardhim yelp as he was sprayed all over with hairspray and brushed until his worn outcoat nearly shone, it never will. Then peace, someone suggested (it was Grandma)“Why don’t you all go out into the garden and build a den?” Off they went withcardboard boxes, blankets, torches, a famous Pete’s Pantry cake and lashings oflemonade. Later we all had to view the den, I managed to excuse myself from havinga sleepover by answering “lets wait until the weather gets warmer,” unfortunately theywon’t forget, even if I do. Then they were all gone. The teddy bears were picnickedout. The table tennis tournament quickly over, because a twin stood on the fragileball, which twin? Haven’t a clue, but it was a boy. Grandma and Grandpa then playedtiddlywinks with the grandchild with the sad eyes, she won. It was very quiet. Nedwas still looking for the telephone.

Moving on, my wifes floors have become quite a joke in Church. I think some peoplehave mis-interpreted her “floors” for “flaws.”  Anyway she has been and still is, veryexcited that she has had all the upstairs floors, in the Rectory stripped, sanded andpolished. They look very beautiful and she has been known to drag strangers off ofthe streets to inspect them. Keep your head down if you are passing, but if you arecalling in be prepared for the Grand Tour. The floors have more significance than justbeing pleasing to the eye. We felt that new floors were the beginning of our new lifein Chailey. We would start a new ministry, built on solid foundations, the new floors. It says in the Bible:  ”Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and putsthem into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain camedown, the streams rose, and the wind blew and beat against his house; yet it did notfall, because it had its foundations on the rock. But everyone who hears these wordsof mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his houseon sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beatagainst that house and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27.

This is how it is with God, when we start a new life with Him and trust Him to guide

us daily, it is a new beginning. All our past hurts and deeds can be left with Him andthis gives us a huge feeling of freedom. If we open our hearts to Him he will enterinto our lives and give us peace and an assurance that He will never leave us. Hepromises to guide us through all of the troubles that will come our way, if we put ourtrust in Him, the rock.

If I can help, then I would love to talk to you. Please call me and if not how aboutcoming to one of our Christmas services? Come and find out what the real meaningof Christmas is, you will be assured of a warm welcome. I pray that Christmas will bea time of joy and happiness for you and your family.

Every blessingJohn and Ned at the Rectory

Chailey WI

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 7th December when DrSheila Innes makes a welcome return visit; her talk is entitled‘Confessions of a Born Mimic’. We know from hearing herbefore that this will be an enjoyable and amusing evening.

In November we were finally able to meet Kathy Fordham, whofarms at Bradfords Farm at Little Horsted, after her attempt to come in January wasthwarted by the snow. She outlined the changes which had taken place since herarrival on the family farm in the 1990’s and told how the catastrophes of first theflooding in 2000 and then the Foot & Mouth the following year, had made themdiversify into the successful operation they have today. The meeting was wellattended and we were pleased to welcome two new members.

We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.45 pm and we are always pleasedto see prospective members and guests.

Community First RespondersNot all of you will be aware that North Chailey is included in anetwork of villages in the area that have volunteer FirstResponders within the community. The purpose of Community First Responders is to have anetwork of local people that have been trained by South EastCoast Ambulance Service to provide initial care, primarily in

serious and/or life threatening emergencies. For example, in the case of cardiacarrest, patient survival chances decrease by 10% for every minute that defibrillation indelayed.  So, in the event of the attending ambulance being off station or otherwiseheld up then a Community Responder, equipped with a defribillator, can make acrucial difference.Community First Responders carry a comprehensive first aid kit which costs inexcess of £2,000 and with very limited finance available from the Ambulance Service, this cost is met by fundraising and charitable donations. The North ChaileyCommunity First Responder is Kim Traynor who will cover an area expanding up to 5miles of her home address, thus enabling cover in surrounding villages. If you feelthat you can contribute to the First Responder scheme, whether by training as a FirstResponder, fundaising or by making a donation please contact Kim Traynor on07900 800683 or [email protected] Traynor

Santa’s Sleigh Available for Community Use We are local farmers who have a Sleigh, with lights available for use by the localcommunity.  For six years, we took the sleigh around Newick village, collecting moneyfor local charities, until the Uckfield Lions offered to take over the route, at a timewhere as a couple we were very busy, and it was a very welcome offer. TheLions now visit Newick each year, with Father Christmas, so the sleigh is a bitredundant.  You may have seen it being used at Chailey Bonfire Night. It has spacefor a generator, and comes with lights, as previously mentioned. It seems a shameto see it sitting in storage, when Father Christmas could use it for transport tosomewhere or another. If your local organisation has any use forit, or if you fancy taking it to a differentlocal village to collect money, pleasecontact us on 01825 723253

LEWES DISTRICT STRATEGIC HOUSING LAND AVAILABILITY ASSESSMENT

The bureaucratic shorthand is – SHLAA. What on earth does it mean, you might ask?Every District is required to come up with a ‘so-called’, scientific, technical study which:(i) identifies and assesses sites with the potential for housing; (ii) assesses when theyare likely or could be developed. It is a system that is evidence based for the LocalDevelopment Framework. This huge document is (in my opinion) not user friendly forany of us to read. It is important to note that Lewes District Planning Officers wereresponsible for short-listing the sites and areas that have been surveyed by planningconsultants Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners. How does this affect us in Chailey? It isclear, in my opinion - that Lewes District Council promote building on Greenfield sites, rather than more sustainable brownfield sites that could easily be made available in thetown of Lewes. This Council should and must maximize the use of sustainable brownfieldsites, especially in the town of Lewes where there are so many amenities.

This document should not be taken lightly. It will determine the character of our ruralcommunities for the next twenty years. I am sure that our own Parish Council, togetherwith Wivelsfield and Newick will be discussing the subject at length.

THE CELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS AND FRIENDS

On a far more optimistic, amusing and happier note, this Christmas will be a ‘Greek’Christmas/birthday for me. A Christmas tale. Once upon a time, a long time ago in1977/8 two women in their late twenties met in a sauna in Putney, London. One: Diana, mother Irish and father Polish, and Sharon, pretty much a mixture too. They remainedfriends. Diana married Theo, an Athenian, and Sharon…..well, here she is in Chailey. My Greek friends have never ever experienced a traditional English Christmas or NewYear. We shall have a lot of fun. I truly hope in these difficult times that you, your familyand friends do too.

It has been such a busy mid October week, starting with apond re-dedication ceremony on Red House Common toinclude the late Foye Ridley. Two of her children were thereas well as grand children and members and friends. Thesun shone and the Reverend John Maskell from St Peter’sChurch spoke a few words and readings. Her son anddaughter unveiled the new plaque and afterwards every-one went to the May Cottage Tea Room for an informal gathering..

Next it was the Children’s Bird Box Workshop in the Village Hall when elevenchildren and their minders made up twenty bird boxes. Thanks to Lionel for hishelp.

This was followed the next day by Rosalie’s Fungus Foray and there was muchforaging and searching on Romany Ridge Common in the autumn sunshine. Thanks to Rosalie.

For our October meeting, the speaker was Arthur Hoare who gave an illustrated talkon ‘British Wildlife’.

No meetings in December, so our next one will be our Survey Results from RomanyRidge during 2010 on Thursday January 20th 2011 at 7.30 in Chailey Village Hall, with slides, photos and charts of the findings during the year

May I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year.

NADFASNewick Decorative and Fine Arts Society

Plumpton Village Hall. 2.15, Tuesday December 14th

The lecture this month is on the famous mistress of LordNelson, Emma Hamilton. ‘Emma Hamilton: Scandal Celebrityand Portraiture in the 18th Century.’ Emma would certainlymatch up with any of today’s celebrities. She embarked on hercareer at the age of fifteen by dancing naked on the banquetingtable at Uppark, the Sussex home of Sir Harry

Featherstonhaugh.   She soon was persuaded to go to London where she quicklybecame a favourite of society. She was painted by many famous painters of the daybut in particular George Romney who depicted her in a series of ‘attitudes’ whichwere a sensation at the time. After her marriage ….. but I will not tell you any more asthat would spoil the lecture! So why not come and find out the rest of the story, starttime is 2.15, and as it is Christmas we will be serving mince pies and mulled wineafterwards.   The cost for non members is £5.  For details of membership pleasecontact: Marjorie Blunden: 01825 723250, or Carole Burgon: 01273 890301.

The children have been very busy makingdecorations for our Halloween Party back inOctober, which we used to make a spookyentrance to the party, as our guests arrived. The

evening was a great success and we would like to thank everyone who was involvedand supported us.Just before half term the children and staff began to build a float for Chailey Bonfire. They chose to make Thomas the Tank and their enthusiasm was so great that theyalso made Annie, Clarabel and Bertie Bus. They proudly rode in their carriages all the way to the village hall where the eveningculminated in hot chocolate and fireworks for all. We will now be up to our elbows in glitter making Christmas decorations and buildingon the children’s excitement for the holidays ahead. Vacancies are available for children aged 2-4yrs - if you would like to come and visitus please call us on 07852 986024.Kate Blackaller

A Welcome To John & GayeWe had a interregnum some time ago. It seemed to last forever, then everything went

slow,Another interregnum, and in a little while, we learned that a vicar was to come on trial.

If he liked us, and we liked him, he then would come to stay,And in the meantime all we could do was pray.

And then in April of this year, we learned our church’s fate,He was staying with us, which we all thought was great.

John had a sense of humour, this was obvious,And soon he had settled in without making a fuss

He’s been a Sgt. Major and soon we could see this,He made good friend of all of us,and of Sarah and Chris.

if we did not respond, when he was teaching us,He would look at us pathetically, and say one word “Discuss”!

His wife Gaye will help him, if ever he gets stuck,She will tell him what he should say. Well! That’s just his good luck.

It’s not every congregation, that has a big surprise,When their vicar strips to football shorts, and shows his muscley thighs.

He did it to make a point; things aren’t always what they seem,He may be a vicar, but he’s in a football team.

They’ve had some teas parties to get to know us all,And all the people wander in, and stretch from wall to wall.

Gaye works so very hard, the night before she bakes,To bring us these lovely scones, and all the gorgeous cakes.

Her pride and joy her floor upstairs,She likes to show us round,And pictures of their family are always to be found.

Gaye started Ladies Prayer Group, each Tuesday morn at ten,This one’s just for the ladies, they do not have the men.

On Thursday Bible Study is at 8p.m and at this all are invited, the ladies and the men.Now we know St. Peter’s is in dire straights, lots of discussion, and lots of debates,

We need to raise some money, if it’s to carry on,So please put on your thinking caps, don’t leave it just to John.

We know we have been lucky, to have them with us here,So let’s raise our glasses to them, and give them a big cheer.

We shouldn’t say we’re lucky. It’s not just to good luck,For when we prayed for guidance, that’s when we passed the buck.

We celebrated Bonfire Night on the 6th ofNovember and it has to be said that alldidn’t go quite according to plan! Thesheer number of people who attendedgave us some logistical problems and itwas most unfortunate to encounter some

communication and technical difficulties too. The net result was that we kept ourpublic waiting around on a chilly evening far too long. Please rest assured thatlessons will be learned and next year will be much, much better. Mind you, weren’tthe floats absolutely brilliant! Such a huge amount of work went into each, culminat-ing in the biggest procession Chailey has seen for many years. Congratulations tothe winners, Chailey Youth Group and Toddlers Inn and our thanks and admiration tothe rest of the entrants.

Future Events –Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch 4th DecemberInvites to all of our regulars have gone out, but there is always room for more! Thishas to be one the absolute highlights of our year. We bring all of our guests to theVillage Hall, lay on a full Turkey dinner, entertainment, Christmas Pud and tea, thenlet off some fireworks and deliver them all home again. It is just the most suburb funto be involved with!

Scalextric Race Day Sunday 19th DecemberThe Horns Lodge will be hosting the event again from 2.00pm onwards. Mike andLinda at the Pub have put in a request for Santa to put in an appearance again so itpromises to be great fun for all the family in a cracking atmosphere, why not havesome food while your there?

Grand PortreeveDo you fancy being a pillar of society for a year and raising some money for thecommunity in the process? Applications for candidates for the 2011 corrupt electionare open now. Rules are available on the web site and the winner will be announcedon St Georges Day.

I hope that this Christmas ‘sparkles’ for all of our friends in Chailey, and that the newyear brings you everything that you wish for.

I’ve always been impressed by the work done by the staff whointroduce our four year old children to school life and learningand by the first class results they achieve. It must be one of thehardest jobs in school. So, it came as no surprise to me thatafter a recent County inspection our reception provision wasdeemed to be outstanding. If you have a child due to start schoolnext year and you missed our open days then ‘phone the schooland make an appointment to meet Mrs. Morrow, theheadteacher. You will find she is very approachable and cananswer any questions you might have and she will also give you

a tour of the school. On the morning of the last day of term the children were treated to an abridgedversion of Treasure Island presented by a touring theatre group. When I was atschool in about 1946,a boys’ school, we had a production of the play and our Latinmaster made a gramophone record of the school singing Fifteen Men on a DeadMan’s Chest but rather than sounding like fearsome pirates we sounded like theLuton Girls’ Choir. My daughter’s first primary school was in Robert Louis Stevenson Avenue in Bourne-mouth, that seems years ago.
