Welcome to Airliner World’s annual United Kingdom and Ireland Airlines Guide. The data on the fleets is accurate to January 1, 2012 (unless stated in the tables). As with most reference documents, some information becomes out of date almost

immediately. Major changes from last year’s supplement have been the cessation of operations by Britsih Midland International –bmi and bmibaby, while Classic Flight has become Classic Air Force. We have also omitted some of the smaller (mainly business avia-tion) operators. Each entry contains a short history, address and contact information and a fleet listing. The columns give the type, registration, construction number (c/n), previous identity, passen-ger carrying capability and other information (such as lessor and colourscheme). In the seating column, a ‘F’ indicates First Class, ‘C’ Business Class, ‘CY’ mixed Business and Economy, ‘PY’ Premium Economy, ‘Y’ Economy and ‘W’ Virgin Upper Class. Where there is no letter the number simply gives the maximum number of passengers that could be carried. Other abbreviations include: cs colourscheme, cvtd converted, lsf leased from, lst leased to, oo on order, opf oper-ated for and std stored.

Formed in the Channel Islands in 1968, Aurigny Air Services initially used Britten Norman BN-2A Islanders on flights linking the islands. In 1971, it became the first commercial operator of the larger Trislander and extended its route structure to include the south coast of England and northern France. With the larger ATRs, it connects the Channel Islands to a number of UK cities including London (Gatwick and Stansted), Manchester and Bristol. It also operates mail contracts from East Midlands and London which feed into intra-island flights. At the end of 2011, Aurigny rolled out the first GPS approach system in Europe for use by the company’s Trislanders flying into Alderney and Southampton airports, allowing flights in lower visibility and poor weather.

Formerly known as BA Connect and British Airways CitiExpress, BA CityFlyer links London City Airport with UK and European destinations with its fleet of Embraer E-Jets. The carrier has now received all of its Embraer 170s (6) and E190s (8) from its order with the Brazilian manufacturer. The longer range of the new E190s has enabled the extension of its route network to include many Mediterranean resorts - particularly at weekends. All aircraft are operated on a franchise agreement with British Airways (aircraft are liveried in full BA colours & titles) and operate using BA flight numbers. In 2012, a Saab 2000 was leased from Eastern Airways for use on thinner routes including to the Isle of Man.

Formerly British Aerospace Corporate Flight Operations, its two operational BAe 146s are used to carry personnel between various sites in the UK and Europe, including, Warton, Farnborough and Munich. BAe 146-301, G-LUXE is leased to the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) and is employed in a research role by organizations such as the UK Metrological Office, while the Jetstream 31 is used for autonomous flight trials work.

Blue Islands (Jersey)Initially formed in 1999 as Le Cocq’s Airlink, the airline initially carried perishables from the UK mainland to Alderney. This soon progressed into scheduled passenger services using Britten Norman BN-2A Trislanders, linking the Channel Islands to the UK’s south coast and northern France. A name change to Rockhopper occurred in 2003 and this was followed by a change of ownership (to Healthspan Leisure) in 2004. The first BAe Jetstream was added to the fleet in December 2005 and a final name change to Blue Islands was made in 2006. During 2011 four new routes were added to its network including London City, Bristol, Manchester and Bournemouth which will help passenger numbers increase by 23%. It now operates over 400 flights per week from ten destinations. Jetstreams are leased from Links Air for short periods.

bmi regional started operating as an independent airline on June 1, 2012 after being released from ownership by Lufthansa and British Airways or part of the Star Alliance airline group. It has been busy transitioning its systems and infrastructure from the old bmi Group. It is planning to enhance its customer services including the introduction of new menus for meals served onboard. A new frequent flyer programme will be launched soon. The carrier started out as Business Air in 1987, flying daytime passenger charters and night- time mail flights. Scheduled passenger services were then initiated and the operator expanded until its takeover by British Midland Airways in 1998. It then was called British Midland Commuter before changing to bmi Regional in 2001. Lufthansa became the majority shareholder in October 2008 and fol-lowing the German company’s decision to sell parent company British Midland International-bmi to British Airways parent the International Airline Group (IAG) in September 2011. With bmi subsidiaries, bmibaby and bmi Regional not being part of IAG’s future plans, both were offered for sale. No buyers were found for bmibaby and the airline was closed down, while bmi regional (new spelling) was more fortunate and was acquired by Aberdeen-based consortium Sector Aviation Holdings in a deal valued at £8 million. Two new routes were launched on October 29, 2012 – Bristol to Aberdeen with two daily weekdays flights and once daily at weekends and Manchester to Antwerp also with two daily weekdays flights and once daily at weekends. While three new European routes to Munich, Milan and Hannover from Bristol Airport were launched on February 13.

Bond Offshore Helicopters, a subsidiary of the Bond Aviation Group, was formed at Aberdeen Airport in 2001 to take advantage of the booming North Sea oil and gas exploration industry. The company specialises in providing offshore helicopter transportation services between Aberdeen, Blackpool, Norwich and Humberside

Airports to North Sea and Irish Sea production platforms. The company also oper-ates Search And Rescue (SAR) operations around the UK’s coast, air ambulance and police helicopter support as well as other specialist services including offshore wind farm and lighthouse maintenance and VIP charter services.

Bristow has operated in the United Kingdom and Europe for more than 50 years. Primarily providing crew transport services to offshore drilling rigs and production platforms in the North Sea, Bristow is one of the largest helicopter providers in the area with more than 50 aircraft and 1,000 employees. Clients consist mostly of major integrated oil and gas companies. Bristow is also a civil supplier of search and rescue (SAR) services to the Netherlands Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Association. One of the world’s largest international carriers, British Airways (BA) was formed on April 1, 1972, following the amalgamation of British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA). Since then it has absorbed other opera-tors including British Caledonian and Dan-Air forming BA EuroGatwick and has also split into regional entities. Subsidiaries Brymon Airways and British Regional Airlines were combined in 2002 to form BA CitiExpress, which then evolved into BA Connect in 2006. Most of its services were sold to Flybe, apart from operations from London City Airport which still use the BA CityFlyer brand. BA’s main bases are London/Heathrow and London/Gatwick although the long-haul destinations from the latter have been greatly reduced in the last couple of years. The oneworld airline alliance member has both the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner on order to replace elements of its long-haul fleet. On April 8, 2010, British Airways merged with Spanish carrier Iberia to create the world’s third-largest airline in terms of annual revenue and Europe’s second biggest airline group. Three months later the European Commission gave its approval, also allowing American Airlines

to co-operate with the merged entity on transatlantic flight to the USA. This was finally completed on January 21, 2011 when the BA and Iberia formally created the International Airlines Group (IAG). On December 22, 2011 IAG confirmed it had entered into contractual negotiations with Lufthansa to acquire British Midland International - bmi for £172.5 million. The deal included an option for the German carrier to sell bmi regional and bmibaby separately however, the option was not taken up. bmi regional has become a separate entity while bmibaby has ceased operations. Most aircraft of British Midland International-bmi have been absorbed into BA's fleet with some being returned to lessors.

Well-known by aviation enthusiasts for providing flights to and from air displays, the activities of Air Atlantique’s Classic Flight were curtailed somewhat by the cessation of its Douglas DC-3 passenger operations in 2008 and its ad hoc cargo work with the DC-6s has also reduced in recent years. Originally formed in 1969, the name Air Atlantique was used from 1977 and, following a move to Coventry (from Jersey) in 1985, and the two DC-6s were added to its fleet of DC-3s. Lockheed Electras were also used from 1994 until that part of the operation transferred in

name to Atlantic Airlines - now West Atlantic (see later) - in 2004. In 2010, Classic Flight established AIRBASE at Coventry, which is a living aviation museum which offered visitors taxiing rides, maintenance demonstrations, engine starts and pleasure flights using the company’s mixed fleet of aircraft. However in 2012, it was announced that the facility was being moved to a new location at Newquay Airport in Cornwall, which will be open for visitors in 2013. DC-6, G-SIXC has meanwhile been withdrawn from service and has been converted into a diner at Coventry.

Based at Humberside Airport, Eastern Airways operates a fleet of turboprop British Aerospace Jetstream 41s, Saab 2000s as well as five Embraer 135/145 regional jets. Many of its flights are in support of the North Sea oil and gas industry linking many of airports on the east coast of the United Kingdom such as Aberdeen, Newcastle, Norwich, Durham-Tees Valley and London/Stansted, plus Norwegian destinations such as Stavanger and Oslo. It also operates services to other major UK airports such as East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Southampton.

The airline was established at Humberside Airport in 1997 starting with links to Aberdeen. It expanded in 2003 with the acquisition of its Jetstream 41s as well as taking over the routes previous operated by British Airways CitiExpress. It now operates the world’s largest Jetstream 41 fleet. In September 2010, Eastern acquired Plymouth-based Air Southwest and closed down its operations on September 30, 2011. The carrier is one of the only airlines to actually own an airport after the company bought Humberside from the Manchester Airports Group in 2012.

Established at London/Luton in 1995 by the charismatic Sir Stelios Haji-Ionannou, easyJet has become a household name in the UK as a low-cost airline – and has also branched out into car hire and hotels. Flybe, the largest regional carrier in Europe, can trace its origins to 1979 and the forma-tion of Jersey European Airways. The airline started out operating services from the Channel Islands before relocating to Exeter in 1985 after merging with Blackpool-based charter carrier Spacegrand. It continued to expand its regional network and by 2000, it had grown into the third-largest scheduled operator in the UK. It flew under its new identity, British European, for just two years before adopting its current name in July 2002. Today, the full-service, low-fare (rather than low-cost) airline operates almost 210

routes to 71 airports in 20 countries, carrying over 7.6 million passengers during the 2011/12 accounting year. Flybe has recently supplemented its fleet of Embraer 195s with the smaller, 88-seat E175 having announced a $500 million finance deal for 20 examples in November 2011. Flybe, which acquired British Airways’ regional arm, BA Connect, in 2007, has a franchise agreement with Scottish operator Loganair. It also operates a Scandinavian subsidiary, Flybe Nordic, in partnership with Finnair.

Low-cost carrier Jet2 can trace its origins back to the Bournemouth-based freight carrier Express Air Services. The airline was originally launched in 1978 to transport perishable goods from the Channel Islands before securing a contract with the Royal Mail early the following decade. The carrier, which was renamed Channel Express, continued to expand its air cargo operations, eventually flying Airbus A300 Freighters on behalf of DHL and UPS. The decision to enter the low-cost market in 2003 marked a significant change in

focus for the Dart Group subsidiary. It launched a separate no-frills arm, Jet2, from Leeds Bradford and such was its success that in 2006, the Channel Express brand was completely amalgamated into the low-fare branch. London/Luton-based Monarch Airlines commenced operations in 1968 using a pair of former Caledonian Airways Bristol Britannias. The carrier initially flew charter services in support of package holiday provider Cosmos Tours in which it shared mutual ownership. As demand increased, the airline began replacing its turboprops with an all-jet fleet of Boeing 720Bs and was carrying more than 500,000 passengers per year by 1972. The carrier ventured into scheduled services during the mid-1980s but it was the recent decline in the sale of inclusive tour holidays which pushed the airline away from charter work. Today, Monarch serves both short- and long-haul destina-tions from its five bases at Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester and London’s Gatwick and Luton airports.

Formed from the privatisation of the former government agency Defence Evaluation & Research Agency (DERA), the defence technology company undertakes modifica-tion, testing and evaluation of products and services on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence, other government departments and commercial customers. QinetiQ supplies aircraft to the Empire Test Pilots School (ETPS) and has recently replaced its Hawker Siddeley Andover and BAC One-Eleven with BAE Systems Avro RJ regional aircraft.

The RAF has for many years relied upon its ageing fleet of Lockheed TriStars and Vickers VC-10s to meet its air transport/tanker requirements. In 2008, the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft contract was awarded to AirTanker which will provide the RAF with 14 specially adapted Airbus A330 Voyager aircraft. Two examples have now been delivered to Brize Norton while a third, G-VYGG, is expected to remain on the British register and will be flown by civil aircrews for the foreseeable future. VIP duties are performed by Northolt-based 32(TR) Sqn. Other aircraft in the fleet including the Boeing C-17 Globemaster, Lockheed C-130 Hercules and, from 2014, the Airbus A400M. The RAF will shortly take delivery of two former TNT Express BAE Systems 146-200QCs for use in Afghanistan, while a one year contract has been awarded to HiFly of Portugal to perform airbridge duties to the Falkland Islands.

Acquired by Loganair in July 2011, Suckling Airways currently flies as a subsidiary of the Scottish carrier though it is anticipated that it will be fully-absorbed into its parent company during early 2013. The airline, formerly known as ScotAirways, operates ACMI contracts on behalf of several customers including Air France/CityJet, Loganair, Aer Arann and Svenska Direktflyg. Today, the carrier operates seasonal flights to a mixture of long- and short-haul holiday destinations around Europe, North Africa, Canada and the US from most major airports across the UK. Thomson Airways was originally known as Euravia (London) when it launched in 1961 with a fleet of Lockheed Constellations. The carrier, which served the inclusive tour market, adopted the name Britannia Airways to coincide with the delivery of its first Bristol Britannias in 1964. It joined the Thomson Travel Group the following year, focusing on short-haul charters to holiday destinations around the Mediterranean. In 2000, the carrier and its owners were acquired by the TUI Group of Germany, with

the Britannia name and logo giving way to a new brand; Thomsonfly. A subsequent merger with fellow charter operator First Choice, and its airline of the same name, led to the emergence of Thomson Airways. The carrier, which flies to over 80 destinations from 21 UK airports, was something of a trailblazer for technology - it introduced the new Boeing 737 twin-jet in the 1960s and then the wide-body 767 two decades later. It is also expected to become the first British carrier to operate the new 787-8 Dreamliner when it receives its first example later this year.

Launched by the English business magnate, Sir Richard Branson, in 1984, Virgin Atlantic introduced scheduled services between London/Gatwick and New York/ Newark using a Boeing 747-200 – by the end of the decade, the airline had carried over 1 million passengers. The carrier added services from Heathrow during the mid-1990s and expanded its fleet to include the larger 747-400 and Airbus A340, becoming the UK’s second largest long-haul operator behind British Airways. In 2009, Virgin became the first airline in the world to operate a biofuel-powered commercial jet. The carrier added the first A330s to its fleet in 2011, and has out-standing orders for both the A380 ‘superjumbo’ and 787 Dreamliner.

Singapore Airlines, which owns a 49% stake in Virgin, confirmed in December 2012 that it would sell its shareholding to Delta Air Line for £224 million – the deal is expected to have received regulatory approval by the end of this year.

Originally formed in 1969, Aer Arann’s ownership changed in 1994 when its Chairman Padraig O’Ceidigh took over and expanded its network, establishing links to all major cities in Ireland. In the late 1990s, the company grew again, launching new rotations to the UK. Today, the carrier is Ireland’s largest regional operator and entered into a joint agreement with Aer Lingus in February 2010 to form Aer Lingus Regional. This has led to a number of the carrier's aircraft being painted in the full Aer Lingus livery with additional 'Regional' titles and operating under the ‘EI’ flight code. This covers all former Aer Arann flights from Cork as well as new and existing Aer Lingus services from Dublin including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Doncaster. The carrier's alliance with the Stobart Group has also led to the start of services from London/Southend Airport to destinations in Ireland, while in December, 2012, Stobart received approval from the Irish Competition Authority to acquire sole control of the carrier. In early 2013, the agreement with Aer Lingus was extended to 2022.

Formed by the Irish Government in April 1936, Aer Lingus’ first service between Dublin and Bristol took place a month later. CHC Helicopter Corporation dates back to 1947, but in 1999, it acquired Helikopter Services Group of Norway, the owner of Bond Helicopters which held the original SAR Helicopter Services contract with the Irish Coast Guard. It is now the leading provider of SAR services in Ireland and responds to over 150 emergency call-outs per year. Its SAR operations are conducted from Dublin, Shannon, Waterford and Sligo, while its base in Cork provides vital support to the offshore oil and gas industry. It has also been awarded an extension to the contract and will provide Sikorsky S-92s to replace the S-61s.

Air Contractors started operations in the UK in 1972 as Air Bridge Carriers. It now operates freight services throughout Europe on behalf of postal organisations and express parcel carriers such as DHL Express and FedEx. It is controlled by ASL Aviation Group in Dublin. Its Lockheed L100s – the civilian version of the Hercules military transport - carry out a variety of ad hoc tasks including treatment of oil spills.



The Irish regional carrier was established in Dublin in 1993 and started its first scheduled services ithe following year on the Dublin to London City Airport route. It formed an alliance with Air France in 1996, operating flights between Paris/Charles de Gaulle and London City under contract. In 2000, Air France-KLM acquired CityJet, and this marked an expansion period for the carrier as it introduced new routes across Europe from its Paris hub. VLM Airlines, which itself was formed in 1992, was flying similar services into London City from its Antwerp base, before it too was acquired by Air France-KLM in December 2007. Some 12 months later, it began to combine flights with CityJet, with aircraft operating under a franchise agreement with Air France using AF/WX-flight numbers.

Formed in May 1985, Ryanair aimed to break the ‘duopoly’ held by Aer Lingus and British Airways on passenger services between the Republic of Ireland and the UK. From flying a single 15-seat Embraer Bandeirante on the Waterford to London/Gatwick route, the carrier has grown to become one of the pioneers of budget travel. Today, it is Europe’s largest low-cost airline, operating a fleet of over 200 Boeing 737-800s. Ryanair continues to grow in popularity, despite public criticism about its fare structure and hidden charges. In October 2009, it became the first carrier to abolish airport check-in, with customers booking tickets through the company’s website and printing out a boarding pass before arriving at the point of departure. This, it says will significantly reduce overhead costs with those savings being passed on to its passengers through even lower fares. The carrier received the last of its current order of 737s in December 2012.
