The Merry Widow of Malagawi, a sparkling new adaptation of Lehár’s beloved operetta, puts a chic, contemporary spin on this evergreen tale of diplomatic intrigue, gold-digging and true love. Lehár’s great romantic tunes take centre stage and British soprano, Elizabeth Llewellyn leads the incredible cast.

Hussar Grill T-bone steak

Hussar Grill: Still delivering perfectly done steaks – 50 years onRestaurant review by Bianca Coleman

It is testament to the excellence of this restaurant chain that we have eaten at four of the eight in the Western Cape and have

never had a bad – or even mediocre – experience.

Consistency is one of the corner-

stones of success, especially in the restaurant industry. It only takes one awful meal to put a person off for-ever, whether it’s your first visit or your 10th. The Hussar in Rondebosch is the original, established in 1964 – another indication of how good it is – and our favourite.

No matter which one you choose, you’ll get the same comfortable dé-

cor with lots of dark wood and wine bottles, the same menu, the same great service, and the same high quality.

Being a steakhouse of the old fashioned variety, you’ll find the menu full of classics from decades past, like chicken livers, snails, grilled black mushrooms, prawn cocktail and deep fried Camembert for starters. I’ve had the cream of tomato soup at the Camps Bay branch, which is delicious, as is the carpaccio.

There are salads, light grills and seafood, and then of course all the steaks you fancy, on and off the bones, as well as classics like chateau-briand, the divinely decadent carpet-bagger, and fillet béarnaise and other house specialities. The basics include rump, sirloin, T-bones and fillet in different sizes, which you can have with or without a traditional sauce like cheese, pepper, monkeygland, garlic, mustard or blue cheese. Prices are quite reasonable and depend on the size of the cut, which can be any-thing from 200g up to a kilogram or more; the house specialities are 200g or 300g priced from R142 to R190.

Ribs, poultry, lamb, ostrich, and game are on the menu as well.

On our most recent visit we gave

the starters a miss and went straight for the steak. My partner had a T-bone and I opted for a 200g sirloin with mushroom sauce. All steaks are served with your choice of starch – mash, fries, rice, or baby potatoes. In keeping with true steakhouse tradition, creamed spinach and cin-namon butternut can be ordered on the side. Where would we be without

these two ubiquitous vegetables? As always, the steaks were done to per-fection.

Skipping starters meant my part-ner had space for a crème brûlée for dessert, while I had another glass of Nederburg Baronne. The wine list is extensive, with many affordable op-tions; uses descriptions from Platter’s Wine Guide; and has been awarded Diners Club platinum status. While you are certain to find something you like, you can bring your own. Better yet, Hussar doesn’t charge corkage.

* Where: 10 Main Road, Rondebosch; call 021 6899516. For other branch-es, visit www.hussargrill.co.za.When: Lunch and dinner Mondays to Fridays, dinner Saturdays and Sun-days.

Carducci is a good brand to consider if you really want to make a statement

The final days of school are here and most schools are having their matric ball in October. This is undoubtedly a fun, exciting time for students, but it can also be a little stressful for boys since choosing a suit for that special occasion can be a daunting under-taking.

There are some basic rules to fol-low to achieve that perfect look. Firstly, you need to know what the current trends are in terms of col-our, fabric and cut. Suits should ide-ally be fitted and made or altered to suit your body. Secondly, choose a good quality fabric - one that will not crease easily and that is also soft

and comfortable. The cut of the suit is also very important. It’s important to bear in mind that not all suits that you find in stores will necessary fit your specific body shape. Try all makes of suits and find one that fits you and remember that baggy pants, long sleeves and dark shirts are not “in” anymore, so it’s good idea to vis-it a store that manufactures custom made suits.

The most important of all is choosing the correct trousers. It should be sleek and fitted and should be comfortable when walking, sitting or dancing. The perfect pants should follow your shape - wide at the hips and tapered towards the ankles. The length of the pants should just sit on the shoe which you will be wearing on the day. Just two pockets on ei-ther side should be sufficient to carry necessary items such as a wallet and

cell phone. NEVER overload pockets, as this will create a bulge and would actually make the back of the pants uncomfortable. If you choose pants with pleats, make sure that they do not balloon when you sit. They should maintain a smooth, “draped” appearance without any visible wrin-kling of the fabric. A trouser with a cuff gives it extra weight, giving the trouser a sleeker look. The hem of the trousers should sit on the shoe and NOT drag or touch the ground.

Choosing a shirt and accessories are much easier after you have chosen a suit. Shirts that are slim fitted are ideal; otherwise opt for a solid colour shirt with two collar buttons that fits around the neck. The sleeves should just sit on the wrists and should not fold or drape onto the hands. Your personal style is key when choosing a suit, as this reflects the person that

you are. For example: if you are a dar-ing person, then choosing a red tie or wearing a tuxedo would be a good move. Shirts, ties, belts and shoes should all compliment the suit that you will be wearing. It is also a good idea to find out what your partner will be wearing so that you can in-corporate or add an item such as a tie or bow tie that would be similar in colour to her ball gown. At the end of the day, you must look your best on the night of your matric dance as it is one of the most significant nights of your high school life.

WIn!One lucky reader can win a suit for that special occasion. Send your name and “Matric suit” in the subject line in an e-mail to: [email protected] before 12pm on Monday, September 7. Good luck!

Welcome spring with some opera magic

As the days lengthen, bringing a hint of spring to the air, Cape Town Opera (CTO) promises to put a spring in your step with

their effervescent production of ‘Merry Widow of Malagawi’, showing at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town from September 5 to 12, thanks to the generous support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust fund.

Director Janice Honeyman has trans-ferred Franz Lehar’s beloved ‘Lustige Witwe’ from the Balkan kingdom of Pontevedria to an equally fictitious so-phisticated modern state somewhere north of us.

CTO Managing Director Michael Williams shares his unbridled excitement for this production:

Yesterday I sat watching the run through of ‘Merry Widow of Malagawi’ in the rehearsal room, wishing it would never end. Franz Lehár’s wonderful music in-fected me all over again, as Tim Murray coaxed a stylish nod to Vienna from the company.

And what to say about Janice Honey-man - surely South Africa’s doyenne of Wit, Panache and Wicked Fun - who has created a fantasy world, so familiar, so just out of reach and yet so damn desir-able. It’s a world of high fashion, bright colours, cocktails on white beaches, and lavish balls at grand embassies. (If only Malagawi did exist, I would be one of its

first citizens.)Of course Alan Committie as Njegus

keeps the cast chortling and chuckling throughout, and is a totally disruptive el-ement, bringing his own unique brand of chaos to the room. I know I shall rue the

day I ever allowed Janice to convince me to include him in the cast - letting him loose on the opera stage can only result in show-stopping laughter. Listening to Elizabeth Llewellyn, Soprano (Anna) and Aubrey M Lodewyk (Danilo) sing the love

duet, I could imagine Maestro Lehár smiling approvingly of their faithful in-terpretation of his well-loved melody. I wonder too, what he might say about our chorus, who sing his waltzes as if born to the task. And as for the Dorettes, those saucy sirens of the night, well, I just have to distance myself from what they get up to with an innocent bar stool.

One of the greatest pleasures of my job is being an alchemist, combining the right elements to react in a way that will produce gold.

Birrie le Roux (costumes) and Michael Mitchell (set) have created an incredible kaleidoscope, using a pallet saturated with African colours; Sean Bovim has never worked with Janice before, but it seems to be a match made in heaven, sparking each other to create some rath-er unique dance moves.

I sat in the rehearsal observing an ex-traordinary transmutation of words on a page, an idea on a stairwell, a sketch from a designer’s pen, an exploratory flourish on a marimba, all rapidly turning into a work of art, an elixir, if you like - something that confers youth and long life to all who drink it.

And as I returned to my rather dull office, I wished I could bottle that elixir and sell it at every café in town. But then I realized there’s a much simpler way – just get a ticket to Merry Widow and drink your fill.

Artscape avails itself for history with Heritage Festival 2015

The Artscape Theatre Centre will come alive with stories in Sep-tember, in celebration of Heritage month.

“We are stories that we tell ourselves.” So says Nigerian poet Ben Okri. While Heritage Month means different things to different people, Artscape will be cel-ebrating heritage by telling stories and considering how narratives are refl ected orally, written and in creative forms.

Through various disciplines, Artscape will set forth to question identity, with a focus on “who we are, what we are and what we have been”, encouraging young and old alike to reclaim and re-store the important stories of our heri-tage, to challenge misappropriations and fi nd healing.

Some of the highlights of the festival (which started in late August) included a new piece by Indoni Academy Danc-ers, Inkundla (August 27 to 30), which looked at the “theatre of life”; as well

as the currently showing ‘Siembamba’ (Thursday to Saturday, September 3 to 12), a multilingual play that explores the life of a black domestic worker and the white child she helped raise.

Choirs from around the province will take to the stage alongside the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, Sep-tember 13, for the Western Cape Cho-ral Music Association’s (WeCCMA) 2015 Choral Music Eisteddfod.

Fans of more contemporary sounds will be thrilled to hear that Freshly-ground’s Zolani Mahola, rock queen, Karen Zoid and soprano Zanne Sta-pelberg will be bringing their hit show, ‘Zoid. Zanne. Zolani’ to Artscape (Wednesday and Thursday, September 23 and 24), as part of the festival.

Back by popular demand, ‘Izityhilelo Zobuze’ by Lingua Franca will explore the concept of circumstantial inheri-tance through poetry and music from Thursday to Saturday, September 17 to 26, while ‘Words of War’ by Anele Rusi will tell stories of our heritage and his-tory through inspiring poetry and songs of celebration, on Thursday and Satur-day, September 24 and 26.

Much of South Africa’s heritage is tied up in the stories of our neigh-bouring countries, a point proven by ‘Born Around Here’, a production by Botswana’s Company@Maitisong. The piece tells the often unknown story of Botswana and other neighbouring countries’ contribution to the struggle for freedom in South Africa through the eyes of Botswana family.

Away from the stage, Artscape will host a dialogue titled ‘Connecting Cre-

atives’ on Heritage Day while Artscape’s Tunnel (mural area between Artscape and Civic Centre Parking) will become the backdrop for ‘Ngokomzekeliso Wakhe (In His Image)’ – a performance art instillation by a multi award winner Chuma Sopotela, on Thursday and Sat-urday, September 24 and 26.

Bantu Biko said: “History works through people, and we have availed ourselves for history to work through us.” With their Heritage Festival,

Artscape hopes to inspire theatre-goers to unearth their hidden stories and em-brace their diverse identities.

* The Artscape Heritage Festival will be on stage until Sunday, September 27. Tickets are available from Compu-ticket, or Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695.Visit www.artscape.co.za for more in-formation. Follow on their social media platforms, and use the hashtag #AHF15.

The South African theatre classic ‘Sizwe Banzi is Dead’ has received rave reviews and standing ovations at every

performance at the Baxter Flipside, at the Market Theatre and in the US.

Forty years since John Kani and Winston Ntshona won the Best Actor Tony Award for their performances in the play, which they co-created with Athol Fugard, and nearly a de-cade after the two theatre veterans reprised their roles at the Baxter in 2006, Kani has returned as director, with his son in the role which he made famous.

“Kani and Shabangu give a riveting performance worthy of the material. This is a must-see production.” - On Stage

“…a timeless classic of theatre” – Argus Tonight

Dalin Oliver ditched the chalk board and as-semblies for a microphone and the stage. The ex-high school mathematics and history teacher felt more comfortable wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt instead of chinos and an oversized blazer.

Directed by Stuart Taylor, this is must-see comedy about following the path less trav-

elled and discovering that the real learning starts when school ends. Warning: Late com-ers will be spanked.

“This show will leave you appreciating not only his well thought out and energetic hu-mour but also offer you an insight into the funny experiences teachers face daily” – Cue

Well-known stage and television actor Christo Davids directs the award-winning Lee-Ann van Rooi in the true story, ‘Woman Alone’, by Dan-nelene Noach, now on stage at the Baxter, fol-lowing its success at the National Arts Festival earlier this year.

A true story, this is the tale of a feisty Chris-tian woman, working in a foreign country and the dedicated, devout Muslim woman, directly

responsible for her salvation. Dannelene’s story is poignant and powerful in today’s world – contrary to the romantic tales of the ‘Arabian Nights’, her life became an Arabian nightmare when, after multiple threats, she was abducted and spent 99 days incarcerated in a Saudi Ara-bian jail. At its heart, this is a story of friend-ship, the bond of fearsome feminine strength, and the quest for personal freedom.

Orpheus in Africa tells the little known story of the American impresario Orpheus McAdoo and his African-American Virginia Jubilee Singers, who visited South Africa in the 1890s. It was here, some 125 years ago, that the Jubilee Singers became an unlikely overnight sensation.

With South African star tenor Aubrey Poo (Muvhango, Scandal, The Wild, Rent, Dreamgirls) in the lead role, David Kramer’s new young company will recreate the unique vocal style of that period, singing many of the well known jubilee spirituals, such as – "Roll Jordan Roll", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", "Hush" and "Deliver Daniel" as well as a number of new works Kramer has specially composed. Orpheus’ fiancé, Mattie Allen, will be played by Lynelle Kenned (Blood Brothers, West Side Story).

‘Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles’ is a window into the pri-vate world of the music entrepreneur whose stellar career as Beatles Man-ager made him a household name, yet whose controversial personal life remained very much in the closet.

Brian Epstein died in 1967 of an accidental overdose at the age of 32.

This two-hander play imagines this brilliant, but troubled man’s drug-fuelled final days whilst look-ing back upon his illustrious adult life and meteoric career from his drama school days to managing the world’s biggest pop group. It’s a must see opportunity to discover a previously unexplored story and cel-ebrate a true icon of 1960s popular culture – a man who shaped music and style across the world.

Celebrated actor Nicholas Pauling plays the Jewish and gay Epstein, while Sven Rygrok plays a pick-up and a freelance music journalist.

‘Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles’ is written by Andrew Sher-lock and directed by Fred Abraha-mse, with costumes and set by Mar-cel Meyer.

“The wisdom in balancing these two supremely skilled performers op-posite one another, conjoined with the understated yet wisely construct-ed icons of the time, offer a sense of intrusion into Epstein’s life.”

“One of the best plays of the year, ‘Epstein’ leaves you with the impact of a man who was fallible but who turned the world on its

head in opening doors for John Len-non, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. There are fris-sons of Beatles songs informing and fleshing out elements of the story, but this is no Beatles concert. It’s a bitterly fresh portrait of the back story of one of the world’s secret gods. And it’s the kind of play that enriches you, from the first until the last, and it doesn’t let go.”

Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, ‘War Horse’ captured the hearts of South Afri-

can theatregoers last year. The Pieter Toerien and National Theatre production, featuring the breathtaking talents of the Handspring Puppet Company, sold out in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The production told the extraordinary story of Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who was requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I. Part of the unique the-atrical experience was the music played live on stage by Bob Fox in his role as Song Man.

If you missed the unforgetta-ble production, take heart - you

have another chance to travel with Joey from pastoral fields to the front line and into no-man’s land, as Bob Fox narrates and sings through the timeless story of ‘War Horse’. Fox has created a brand new concert perfor-mance of all of the ‘War Horse’ folk songs, combined with some newly written songs from BBC Radio 2`s ‘The Ballads of the Great War’ and old favourites from his many previous record-ings.

Already a virtuoso guitarist, Fox will also be showcasing his newly acquired melodeon play-ing skills.

The Next 48hOURS • Movies & Guide

FILM: SOUTHPAWCAST: RACHEL MCADAMS, JAKE GYL-LENHAAL, 50 CENTDIRECTOR: ANTOINE FUqUA

From acclaimed director An-toine Fuqua (‘Training Day’) and screenwriter Kurt Sut-ter (TV’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’),

‘Southpaw’ tells the riveting story of Billy “The Great” Hope, reigning Light Heavyweight Boxing Cham-pion of the World (Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal). Billy Hope seemingly has it all with an impressive career, a beautiful and loving wife (Rachel McAdams), an adorable daughter (Oona Laurence) and a lavish lifestyle. When tragedy strikes and his lifelong manager and friend (Curtis “50 Cent” Jack-son) leaves him behind, Hope hits rock bottom and turns to an un-likely saviour at a run-down local

gym: Tick Willis (Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker), a retired fighter and trainer to the city’s toughest amateur boxers. With his future riding on Tick’s guidance and tenacity, Billy enters the hard-est battle of his life as he struggles with redemption and to win back the trust of those he loves.

A love of boxing was certainly not what drove Gyllenhaal to star in ‘Southpaw’. In fact, Gyllenhaal was essentially unfamiliar with the sport before signing on, though he now calls himself an avid fan. For him, director Antoine Fuqua, who’s a dedicated boxer himself and trains every day, was the main reason for his interest in the film to begin with. Having met years before, Fuqua insisted that he’d love to direct the already-acclaimed actor in something that audiences had never seen before. While Gyl-

lenhaal initially chalked the claim up to just being typical Hollywood talk, Fuqua eventually made good on his word.

Determined not to make ‘South-paw’ “just another boxing movie,” the filmmaker was determined to find an actor willing to take on the role of Billy “The Great” Hope in the most literal, brutal way con-ceivable – no doubles, very few ef-fects, little reliance on editing – just straight training and as faithful a replication of the boxing world as possible, right down to the cam-erawork. “The reason why I like to play certain characters is because of the doubt that I have in my ability to do it,” says Gyllenhaal. “Antoine believed in me years before I even knew, and then in the process he believed I could do it. I think that belief in anybody allows you to go do your best work.”

FILM: MISTRESS AMERICACAST: GRETA GERWIG, LOLA KIRKE, MATTHEW SHEAR, JASMINE CEPHAS-JONES, HEATHER LIND, MICHAEL CHERNUS, CINDY CHEUNG, KATHRYN ERBE, DEAN WAREHAMDIRCTOR: NOAH BAUMBACH

A college freshman in New York gets a crash course in city life when she befriends her glamorous step-sister-to-be in ‘Mistress America’, a contemporary screwball comedy from filmmakers Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig.

For Tracy (Lola Kirke), her first semester at college in Manhattan is a major disappointment. Her classes are dull, her roommate is

hostile and her crush, Tony (Mat-thew Shear), has an obsessively jealous girlfriend, Nicolette (Jas-mine Cephas-Jones). Rejected by the literary society she had set her heart on joining, the aspiring writ-er reaches out to Brooke (Gerwig), the going on 30-year-old daughter of her mother’s fiancé – and every-thing in her life changes overnight.

Brooke introduces Tracy to a side of New York she has long dreamed of. Enthralled by Brooke’s picturesque but illegal apartment, about-to-open combination bis-tro/hair salon/art gallery/commu-nity centre, and endless stream of breezy non-sequiturs, Tracy is quickly swept into a series of ad-

ventures masterminded by her soon-to-be sister.

But when a major backer drops out of the restaurant, Brooke’s supposedly charmed life begins to unravel. With Tracy, Tony and Nicolette in tow, Brooke hits the road to confront the person she believes owes her the most: her former BFF Mamie Claire (Heather Lind), who stole both Brooke’s best idea and her wealthy boyfriend, Dylan (Michael Chernus), not to mention her two cats. At the cou-ple’s Connecticut mansion, a farci-cal and poignant encounter reveals the improbable truth in this com-edy of modern manners.

Hurford – and it is the perfect book for helping to prevent and manage allergies in children.

Sylvie shows how you can delay children’s exposure to allergens, al-lowing the body to mature enough to process the agents of incipient al-lergy. Informative and beautiful, this book appeals to all senses.

Yummy recipes such as Celebra-tion Cake, Carob Muffins and much more will assist mothers to treat their young. Also included are chap-ters for sleep time and for the ill.

Sylvie has a wide print and social media following, as well as promi-nence as a TV personality, inspir-ing women to break the mould by promoting liberating new ideas and lateral views.

She was born into the world of journalism, which she has adopted through her parents, both of whom are veteran writers. Her mother Elaine Hurford is an author with eight titles to her credit.

Magazines for which she is known as a regular contributor are Marie Claire, Fairlady and Cosmo and she is called on for expert con-tributions by Elle.

Let’s cook!

Rice PuddingThis is a great recipe to use up lefto-ver rice. Traditionally, we always tend to over cater and rice doesn’t last well into the next day. Although it took me until adulthood to ap-preciate rice – not unlike my grand-father, who didn’t touch it until it was rationed in WW2, after which he couldn’t get enough of it – I have always had a fondness for rice pud-ding.

Ingredients:• 2 cups of cooked white rice• ½ cup of dried cranberries• 1 cup of formula or rice milk• 2 tablespoons of sugar, xylitol

or fructose• 1 pinch of ground cinnamon• ½ teaspoon of vanilla essence• 1 tablespoon of cornflour

Method:Preheat the oven to 180°C. Mix all the ingredients together in a sauce-pan over a low heat until heated through and pour into greased ram-ekins. Bake in the oven for 20 min-utes and serve with a vanilla crème anglaise.

Hope for little ones with allergiesFooding around with Jenny Morris

Heart 104.9FM’s female listeners

get the royal treatment

The annual Women At Heart event took place at the Lookout Granger Bay on Saturday, August 29.

The event is a celebration of women, hosted each year during Au-gust, known as Women’s Month in South Africa.

Heart FM treated 640 of its fe-male listeners to an afternoon of stylish indulgence at the “Captains Table”, which included a five course meal. The theme for this year’s event was “Nautical” and everyone dressed to impress, on trend with hues of blues, white and stripes.

Heart FM presenters, Tracey Lange, Aden Thomas, Suga and Tapfuma Makina were on MC duty for the day, while the on-board en-tertainment was handpicked for the event. Listeners were treated to the sounds of Accoustic Element, Jar-rad and the Pedestrians as well as The Black Ties. Presenters Irma G, Meghan Hector and Jo-Dee Butler made the event even more memo-

rable for the guests as they posed for pictures, played hostesses and handed out spot prizes throughout the afternoon. DJ’s Tyrone Paulsen and Diggy Bongz also each got be-hind the decks to spin a few tracks, getting the ladies on the dance floor.

In addition to the fun being had on the day the women were treated to mini manicures and hand mas-sages by Fox Box. A phone charging station and free WiFi was supplied by Vodacom and Estee Lauder made sure the ladies looked their best throughout the day with a make-up touch up station.

For the majority of attendees, Women At Heart is an annual signa-ture event on their calendars where being a woman is celebrated with friends, family and colleagues.

Heart FM would like to thank all of the sponsors involved in making the event a success as well as the guest for making the day so very memorable. See you next year.

He can claim his part in no less than 38 Top Ten singles, 18 Number Ones and album sales of more than 100 million units.

At the age of 31 when he was the youngest managing director of Island Records, Marot steered the likes of U2’s career for the better part of the 1990s amongst a whole host of oth-ers, all of which guarantees an open-ing address delegates will relish.

Staying in heavyweight territory, MEX15 is set to welcome producer and player extraordinaire Bryan Mi-chael Cox from Atlanta.

Music Exchange: Mingle with top music industry players at MEX15

Music & fashion in perfect harmony at #MEX15The Cape Town Fashion Council and Music Exchange will create Music and Fashion Fusion from Thursday to Saturday, September 24 to 26, at Grand West.

The Cape Town Fashion Council has developed and evolved over the last 9 years to deliver core programs to their growing constituent base, which are designed to impact on job creation and improve GDP along the clothing value chain. Through multiple strategic partnerships, and sector level collaborations they aim to counteract the trends evident in the clothing, footwear and jewellery markets that directly impact on local manufacturing. Their latest collabo-

ration marries the fashion and music industry, and for good reason!

Music and fashion are undoubt-edly two of the most significant and influential elements in our society. These aspects play a substantial role in our everyday life and enact a much larger impact on our global economy and the consumers than we compre-hend.

More importantly, music and fashion influences each other and harmonizes in such a way that it converts cultures - that are distinctly different - into a single culture fu-sion, identifiable by individuals with very different persuasions and tastes.

The Cape Town Fashion Council

and the Music Exchange (#MEX15) collaboration will aim to imitate the belief that music and fashion unite as one identifiable culture – that there is a synergy and unmatched re-lationship between the two elements. The MEX event is considered one of the leading South African music, film and entertainment digital ex-change networks and acts as an an-nual 3-day international music con-ference, masterclass, workshop and showcase platform.

The Cape Town Fashion Council will utilize this platform to showcase some of Cape Town’s most esteemed conceptual designer collections with the aim to connect with artists on

personal level – a level where these artists see themselves wearing the designs to express their individual identities as musicians, and even as actors, and other entertainers – and to exemplify the impact the connect-ed cultures can have on each other and the South African and global economy in the long-run.

“The intent of #MEX15 is aligned with the CTFC mandate to develop businesses in the creative sectors. This partnership will encourage stronger collaborations between mu-sicians and fashion designers.” says Bryan Ramkilawan, CEO of the Cape Town Fashion Council.

Engaging for Change is the theme for the annual Psy-chology Festival of Learn-ing, which will be hosted by

SACAP (The South African College of Applied Psychology) at their Cape Town campus from Thursday to Sat-urday, September10 to 12.

Inspired by the idea of bring-ing together professionals, students and the broader community in an environment to explore the many facets of psychology, counselling and coaching, the Learning aims to enable every participant to take one step further on their journey of understanding the nature and prac-tice of psychology, counselling and coaching at an individual and com-munity level.

The format for the 2015 festival has evolved to include a short talk programme, a coaching conference and a film festival, which will run alongside the talks.

Engaging for Change focuses on change within ourselves, change in our communities and change in the corporate environment brought about by people engaging with each other and working together to achieve change. “We want to share the many South African stories that reflect positive change through en-

gagement, as well as providing peo-ple with the tools they need to bring about change in their lives, com-munities and workplace”, says Lance Katz, SACAP’s CEO.

With nearly 80 guest speakers, the Festival offers a wide range of talks and workshops.

Talk topics include “The Art of Leadership” (Paddy Upton); “Em-pathy, a cause for concern or dis-tress” (Katherine Train); “Subcon-scious Money Scripts – the driving force behind our financial decisions” (Brian Shargey); “Understanding the masculine and feminine psyche – co-creating a beautiful future” (Craig Wilkinson) and many more.

The film festival that is included in the 2015 programme includes the South African documentaries ‘Nor-mal’ and ‘Africa Shafted’, as well as the international documentaries ‘Free the Mind’ and ‘Happy: the

Movie’. For the first time ever the Psychology Festival of Learning will host a short talk programme to kick off the Festival (evening of Septem-ber 10 in Cape Town).

After a less than stellar race in Au-gust the Sports & GT guys are all fired up, and racing is expected to be fast and furious. Competition in the vari-ous classes is fierce and this should make for some very close racing.

Gary Kieswetter and Dawie Jou-bert are currently topping the points table, with 9 points separating them after Dawie did not make Race 2 at the last meeting. Both will be going all out to get maximum points.

Class A will be a hard-fought bat-tle between Francis Carruthers (Nis-san Juno), Dawie Joubert (Lotus Exige Honda) and Johan Engelbre-cht (Porsche). The unknown quan-tities are Craig Jarvis, who has the Dodge Viper back in action, and an up-country entry from Toby Venter who has entered a very quick Porsche GT2R 3.8L.

Class B is an “all Porsche” affair with Gary Kieswetter, Keith Fourie, Matt Kreeve and Andre Brink battling it out for class honours.

In Class C once we again have Colin Plit (Porsche) doing battle with Clinton Thorne (Lotus Birkin) and Louis de Jager (Lola Toyota). Gavin Gorman (Nardini VW) is making a

welcome return, as is Mike Beachy-Head in the impressive looking Por-sche

917 Replica.Class D has 10 entries – Sean Mc-

Carthy and Divan Wentzel (Porsche), Ray Farnham, Hennie Trollip and Marcus Henkel (Birkin 7’s), God-frey Lancellas (Lola), Paul Schwartz (GT40) and Alan de Goede (Harper Toyota). Also, making a long-awaited comeback is Martin Pugh (Lola).

Class E has only one entry, with Steve Humble once again entering the Mazda MX5 Turbo.

William Carter has entered his Por-sche in Class X and will be re-classi-fied after the Qualifying Session.

There are also Races for Clubmans, Gti Challenge, Classics & Fine Cars, Formula Libre, V8 Masters, Supercars and all the Motor Cycle Categories with the first event starting at 10am.

Other attractions include a Fan Walk where spectators get a chance to get up close to the race cars and drivers; a historic motor cycle dis-play and parade; live music; kiddies corner; as well as stalls, exhibits and more.
