MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents I am always proud to show visitors around the School – our facilities are good and well maintained, but it is our students who make me the most proud! On Tuesday we had the privilege of being visited by the Anglican Schools Commission’s Board. Without exception, our students were polite and respectful towards our visitors and their behaviour was such that the campus presented as one where energeticlearning is taking place, but is also calm, tranquil and safe.

StaffTwo of our Primary teachers went on Maternity

Leave at the end of last week and we wish them and their husbands much joy as they each await the birth of their first and second child respectively:• Mrs Lindsay More (Year 5)• Ms Amy Upton (Primary ICT)

A very warm welcome to the two teachers covering for them:• Miss Katherine O’Reilly (Year 5)• Mrs Tamara Smith (Primary ICT)

Staff AwardsCongratulations go to the following staff members who have been recognised by Early Life Foundations for their wonderful work as teaching and learning leaders in our School:• Mrs Sue Skehan (Head of Primary) – Certificate of Accreditation in the Walker Learning (Leadership)• Mrs Janet Stirling (Acting Early Learning Coordinator) – Certificate of Accreditation in the Walker

Learning (Foundation to Grade 2)

Congratulations also to Mr Carl Grice (Year 7) on his nomination for the ASG National Excellence in Teaching Award.

School MusicalWe are very much looking forward to our biennial Musical Production. Mary Poppins opens next Friday night (18 August) in the Oakmont Theatre, with six performances across the week that follows. I know the Performing Arts Department and many others have been working incredibly hard to put together what promises to be a magnificent production. Please check the school calendar and/or this newsletter for the times of performances and book soon to avoid disappointment!

Guest Speaker – Robyn MooreWe have been very fortunate to secure the nationally acclaimed speaker, Robyn Moore, for Tuesday 12 September 2017. She will address Years 10 and 11 during the school day, the staff after school and parents in the evening (7:00 – 8:30 pm).

I commend this event to you. Robyn Moore addressed over 1000 Anglican Schools Commission teachers and support staff at our annual Anglican Schools Day at the start of Term 2. Most staff would attest that she is one of the most entertaining speakers they have heard and that her message was powerful.

We look forward to seeing many parents at the event! (More details are available on the next page, or by visiting: Home Page > News & Events > Calendar > Tuesday 12 September 2017)

Kind regards

Kerry Robertson Principal

2018 WORKPLACE LEARNINGDo you have a business? Have you had Workplace Learning students in the past?

In 2018, Frederick Irwin Anglican School will be implementing Workplace Learning for our General Pathway Year Eleven students. We are interested in developing a database of potential employers who

may be able to assist us with placements throughout the year.

At this point in time,we are looking for initial interest and will then be in touch in Term Four to gather further information from you.

If you are able to provide that opportunity for students, or would like to know more about the programme, please contact Mrs. Peta Sattler, VET Coordinator at school on (08) 9537 0000 or via email at

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY

Dear Parents and Caregivers Last week, Frederick Irwin Primary hosted educators from around the state who were attending a Walker Learning Study Tour for Years 3 to 6 and for Kindergarten to Year 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Teachers and school leaders from all sectors were able to see our teachers in action and to engage with our learners, giving the students a chance to share and showcase their learning to an authentic audience. The feedback from the participants was extremely positive and many left inspired to start or continue their journey with the pedagogy. As part of the tour, Mrs Janet Stirling was awarded her certificate of accreditation for successfully meeting the criteria for accreditation in the Walker

Learning Approach as a classroom educator. I congratulate Janet on achieving this accreditation as it is testament of her dedication to demonstrating all aspects of the Approach to a very high level. Going forward, we will have a number of other staff members who will meet the criteria and go on to become accredited.

Frederick Irwin is excited and proud that one of our teachers has had their Expression of Interest accepted to be a Champion in the reSolve: Mathematics by Inquiry Project. Congratulations Mrs Sue Kirke. The benefits to our school of being involved in the reSolve Project are:• Having our own teachers networking with a community (at a regional, state and

national level) of like-minded professionals who are committed to the delivery of quality mathematics learning that has a spirit of inquiry;

• Exposure to quality, research-based mathematics resources and lessons will provide our teachers with the confidence to lead their colleagues and work on their teaching practice;

• Upskilling our teachers in how to promote a spirit of inquiry in Mathematics to challenge and develop all students’ mathematical thinking.

• Having an opportunity to trial reSolve materials and offer feedback to the Australian Academy of Science to improve the lessons.

Last Friday, we farewelled Mrs Lindsay More who is expecting her first child in the coming weeks. Our best wishes go to Mrs More and her husband as they begin this exciting chapter of their lives. On Monday, we welcomed Ms Katherine O’Reilly who will be teaching in Year 5 for the remainder of the year. Ms Amy Upton commences her maternity leave today and we welcome Mrs Tamara Smith who will teach Primary ICT from Pre-Primary to Year 3. We wish Amy and her family every best wish for the safe arrival of their second child.

While watching Weekend Sunrise I was interested to view a segment on the ‘tutoring tsunami’ sweeping across Australia and the increasing number of parents who feel that this is a must for their children to have tutoring either for remediation or for coaching purposes. While remediation tutoring can have some benefits for assisting children, coaching tutoring to gain higher results has been found in most cases to be a waste of money. As a school, we provide research-based intervention to develop literacy and numeracy skills if it is deemed necessary and we do not advocate that parents engage tutors. Often the concern around development is unwarranted, especially in our younger learners, as it can be more related to maturity and a readiness to learn rather than a lack of understanding. We do not endorse any particular tutors and although some children benefit from the one-on-one we feel that it is our role to cater for their learning needs within the classroom programs provided. I encourage you to speak to your classroom teacher or Mrs Bronte Morgan, Learning Enrichment Coordinator, if you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress, rather than feeling pressured to engage a tutor because others are doing so.

Each year at the Parent Information sessions held to begin the year, teachers talk about the distribution of birthday invitations as they are wanting to ensure that students’ feelings are not hurt if only selected children are invited to a party. I would like to gently remind everyone that if invitations are being handed to parents outside the classrooms, while you are waiting for the doors to open, this can still be very hurtful as the students generally know what these envelopes mean and wonder why they didn’t receive one. Teachers will only distribute invitations if the whole class is invited, or all the boys or all the girls, so I am asking for your assistance to ensure invitation distribution is discreet if this is not to be the case. Kind regards Sue Skehan Head of Primary

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY

Dear Parents Gordon House DayGordon House Day was a wonderful success and the students seemed to really enjoy the day. As I always mention, it gives me joy to see students from across the School come together as one House and community. I would like to thank Mrs Watts, Miss Pyke and Mr Learmonth for their organisation of the day. I would also like to thank Father Noel for leading us in the lovely service. The Secondary students are to be congratulated on the maturity and responsibility they displayed in running our lunch time activities. I thank them for their committed involvement. We look forward to our next House day which will celebrate the Arnold community.

Rock and WaterI have just begun the Rock and Water program with the Year 6 boys. The social emotional program is centred around self-awareness and assists students in learning to respect each other. The program also focusses on building self-confidence, self-control and works to strengthen relationships. I’m very excited to be working with the students and believe that they will enjoy it and in turn it will lead to more self-reflection.

UniformI thought that it would be a prudent time to include some reminders on student uniform. As always I appreciate your support in this endeavour.

• Fringes should not hang across the eyes or face, nor should they interfere when a student is working. They should not extend past the centre of the forehead.

• Girls with hair shorter than the top of the shirt collar must not allow it to hang forward when they are working. The hair should be kept back with black, clear or brown hair combs, hair clips or a plain dark green band.

• Boys’ hair should be kept short and above the top of the shirt collar. Hanging locks of hair in any form are not permitted. Gel, mousse or wax is not permitted.

• Girls are able to wear long white socks, plain with turnover at top and garters (to keep longs socks up) or thick cotton black stockings/tights.

• Boys are able to wear long grey school socks and garters with winter trousers or short grey striped ankle socks (with trousers).

KidsMatter As human beings we often go through a range of emotions. As adults we have learnt the strategies to deal and manage them. When children experience emotions or get swept away with angry feelings it can take them time to calm down. Self-talk is astrategy that we encourage students to use in coping with these feelings. The image to the side is an excerpt from KidsMatter which outlines how self-talk can assist in managing emotions. Kind regards

Noah Clark Deputy Head of Primary

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents

Two weeks ago I hosted a group of RAAFA residents in the Rush Chapel and Elizabeth Irwin Complex. Many of the visitors I have known for nearly 15 years, as I was the parish priest in Mandurah for five years before coming to Frederick Irwin Anglican School. It was a change of feel for the Chapel as the oldest clientele (not counting staff) is usually 18 and youngest five years old... and there are often a few babies around as well.

As people of historical faith, they did not feel out of place in this very modern and simple building. As people with long records of working with parish priests, and working in and around churches, they were in awe of the development of the worship space, the subtle use of technology and the beauty of a church that boasted not one stained glass window. Some just sat and enjoyed being in the presence of God, while others explored every nook and cranny, wanting everything explained from robes to altar construction; not to criticise, but to engage and learn about how much thought had gone into every aspect of the chapel’s development. A retired priest, Ray, even tried out the wheelchair lift, as he was using a walker. Their visit was so rewarding for them and for me.

I will often correct people when they talk about my Chapel… I have no ownership of the building, I just happen to be there at present sharing in God’s work. It is a sacred place set aside on our school grounds that must be welcoming to all people. Today showed me that we could be getting it right. God Bless Father Noel Oakey School Chaplain

NEW OVERSEAS SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE IN YEAR 9 OR 10 IN 2017!In April 2019, these students could be part of a school pilgrimage to a learning centre in Phnom Penh (Cambodia), to teach children English.

Over 70 pilgrims have journeyed overseas with the School since 2012. A pilgrimage experience like this is both challenging and rewarding.

A student/parent information evening will be held in the Elizabeth Irwin Centre Classroom (next to the Rush Chapel) on Tuesday 29 August at 6.30pm.

Interested students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. If you have any questions, please contact Father Noel at the School. T: (08) 9537 0000 E: [email protected]

FRIENDS OF THE PERFORMING ARTS Would you like to be a Friend Of the Performing Arts? FOPA, otherwise known as Friends of the Performing Arts, is a group of parents who support the Performing Arts Department at Frederick Irwin Anglican School. FOPA assists the department by providing a supper service, as well as assisting with ushering and ticketing at many of the Performing Arts evenings/afternoons. This can include Drama performances, Concert evenings, Chamber concerts and Performing Arts nights. A couple of times a year there is a ‘busy bee’ for Drama where FOPA members sort out the costumes and props storeroom. FOPA members also offer assistance at the Performing Arts Camp. If you are interested in helping out and being a part of this group, please email Mrs Harding, FOPA Co-ordinator, at [email protected] . We appreciate any help at all and would love a few more volunteers to join the group!

NETBALL 2017On Thursday 3 August, we were fortunate to have Netball WA come and run a Foundation Coach Connect course for eight of our Frederick Irwin netball coaches. A big thank you to all the coaches who participated, it will certainly benefit the Frederick Irwin netball players.

The more we can develop our coaches, the more we can develop our players!

A thank you also to all the girls who came and participated; their time was greatly appreciated. We couldn’t have done it without them, and we are sure they benefited from it too.

The Frederick Irwin Netball Windup will be held on Thursday 7 September 3:30 - 4:30pm. More info will be given out by coaches soon.

The Year 9/10 Team finished second in their zone, defeating John Forrest and Seton, and going on to easily win over Butler in the first cross over final. Unfortunately, the team went down to a very strong Mandurah Catholic College side in the second cross over final.

As always, the girls represented Frederick Irwin with pride and fantastic sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the players for their determination and enthusiasm given all day.

Thank you also to Mrs Alexander Shorter (Head Coach), Jayme Burkett (Team Umpire) and to all the parents who came and supported the teams and helped with transport.

SCHOOL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

WE ARE ESMART!

Frederick Irwin Anglican School is proud to announce that we have now officially attained eSmart status for our School, by The Alannah and Madeline Foundation*.

Since Frederick Irwin first registered with the program in 2016, we have introduced many new policies and activities to improve the way our school manages cybersafety, bullying and cyberbullying.

Principal Ms Kerry Robertson said that she feels confident that our students, staff and the wider school community are now well supported to be smart, safe and responsible users of digital technology.

“We encourage everyone in the school community to continue to uphold and promote eSmart behaviours, at school and at home,” she said.

Secondary ICT Coordinator, Mrs Candice Shier, said that the Cyberleader program introduced as part of the eSmart school process has been rewarding for both Primary and Secondary students. The research suggests peers are the first stop approach for help when dealing with a negative online environment.

“Our Year 10 Cyberleaders nominate themselves and take time out of their busy school schedules to put together educational cybersafety presentations for Primary school students and Year 7s.

“The presentations are such a great way to convey messages about online safety through the different year levels at the school, and they encourage students to share their experiences and how they can improve their online journeys,” she said.

*eSmart is an initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, a national charity committed to protecting children from violence. Cyberbullying, sexual predation, identity theft and accessing and sending inappropriate images and content are some of the real cyber safety risks facing young people today.

NEW PRIMARY CYBERLEADERS

We have also launched the appointment of a new leadership position - the Year 6 Cyberleaders.

The Year 6 Cyberleaders will be a positive role model for the safe and responsible use of digital technologies in the Primary school. They will also present to younger students about how to protect themselves when in an online environment.

The 2017 selected students are: Mia Johnson, Charlie Hayres, Connor Young, Charlotte Hart, Vanessa Gray, and Dhairya Vachhani.

YEAR 7 AND YEAR 12 CHILDCARE PEEL MATERNITY COLLECTION The Year 12 Children, Family and Community students, Bayley Anzellino, Daniella Taljaard, Olivia Furr, Amber Lehmann and Georgia Ball, were assigned the task of creating Care Packages to support the mothers in need at the Peel Maternity Ward, where they will be hand delivered on Monday 14 August 2017.

The Year 7s were heavily involved in the task, donating multiple items such as baby wipes, clothing, toys, blankets, nappies, soap and cotton pads. They are highly commended for their efforts.

The Year 12 students are excited to deliver the care packages this coming Monday, and were intrigued in regards to the reaction they would receive.

“We are very privileged to get the opportunity to be able to contribute back to the community and help less fortunate mothers get a kick start in being a parent,” Bayley and Daniella said.

From the Year 12 students: We would like to say a massive thank you to all the Year 7s who contributed to the care packaged - we couldn’t have done it without them!

COMMUNITY NEWS AND EVENTS

DOWNLOAD THE SKOOLBAG APP

Download the free App in the App Store – “Frederick Irwin Anglican School – Skoolbag”.

Skoolbag was introduced to the School in 2015 to encourage parents and students to engage with school activities, alerts and news in a paperless and online environment.

iPhone, Android and Windows users can all download the App which sends out timely and relevant notifications to all users, and also to sub-categories to which users can subscribe (for example, subscribing to ‘Primary’ and to ‘Year 6’).

The App is easy to use and also houses all music timetable schedules, which has significantly saved on printing – and so much better for the environment.

In the years to come, Frederick Irwin Anglican School hopes to see all parents and students at the School utilising this App as the School moves towards a more eco-friendly way of dispersing information amongst all students and parents.

Notification Preferences1. Open the App and select ‘More’ (located at the bottom right of the

screen)2. Select ‘Setup Push Notifications’3. Turn ‘on’ the categories you wish to receive notifications for.
