According to columnist Ann Landers, “manners have taken a bea ng in the last 25 years. Indeed, everywhere we look, we see evidence that we are living in an increasingly unmannerly world.” Other social commentators have even suggested that in spite of improved educa onal opportuni es and standard of living, by and large ours is an age in which ‘please’, ‘thank you’ and ‘excuse me’ have become foreign words, and common courtesy and civility have largely been forgo en. The reason why it's so important to prac ce good manners is because doing so communicates RESPECT! “Please”, “thank you” and “excuse me” are magic words that can open many doors in life. This is because people like it when others talk with respect, ask permission, and show gra tude. This is a custom that we should never lose, as it is the basis of civic behaviour and manners in our society. Trea ng others with respect by asking for permission, gree ng others with a smile, and trea ng people in a friendly and polite manner can make someone’s day, a ernoon, or night.

that our young people will learn respec ul behaviour through osmosis. Children also don’t just slip on good manners when it counts, they need to be instructed and prac ce this disposi on and its associated ac ons repeatedly. Courteous behaviour sets a standard of self‐respect and respect for other people who then feel valued as fellow human beings all of whom are made in the image and likeness of God and therefore deserving of dignity and respect. If we, personally, set out to grow as unique persons, then, we will learn to respect the uniqueness of others. As a learning and faith sharing community, centred in Christ, Frayne exists to work in partnership with parents/carers to not only nurture young people to be “university, TAFE or job ready” but also to be good at learning and good at life within an environment in which God is part of the conversa on. As such, the College curriculum is not just about giving ‘informa on to’ students but encouraging them to reach beyond what they thought possible and become people who can make a posi ve difference in the world in collabora on with their parents/carers. There is a “hidden” message in the following observa on concerning the influence adults have on young people:

“Children are natural mimics who act like their parents and other significant adults despite every effort to teach them good manners.” (Author Unknown)

As the first educators of their children, parents need to present themselves as strong role models to emphasise the importance of manners, courtesy, politeness and mutual respect. These are then reinforced by the College. St Paul also has some marvellous words to offer us when he writes about love, an all‐embracing principle for life:

“...If I have no love, I am nothing...Love is pa ent and kind, it is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill‐mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up. Love is eternal.” (1 Cor 13: 2‐8)

In paraphrase it could be saying, “Always be respec ul and express yourself in a polite and courteous manner”. Great news to share with our young people! Yes, having good manners will benefit our young people in most aspects of their life. However, the best reason to use proper e que e is that it's the right thing to do. Thank you for taking me to read and reflect on this ar cle.

AWARD OF MERITORIOUS SERVICE I am pleased to advise the Frayne community that the Australian Associa on of Religious Educa on (AARE) will confer on Theresa Fogarty (Pre‐Primary Teacher), a State Award of Meritorious Service in recogni on of her exemplary contribu on and service to the Religious Educa on Learning Area. The AARE is the Na onal Professional Associa on for Chaplains and Educators in the fields of Service‐Learning, Spirituality, Ethics, Philosophy, Values and Religious Educa on. Members include primary and secondary Government, Catholic and Independent schools and from ter ary ins tu ons in Australia. In conferring this award, the Associa on noted that it was impressed with the passion, endeavour and achieve‐ments that Theresa has demonstrated over many years, par cularly when working with children in the early years of their formal educa on. Theresa will be presented with her award at the AARE Annual Dinner on Thursday 10 September 2020. The AARE Award of Meritorious Service is one form of honouring and recognising the work of those involved within the field of Religious Educa on. Although Theresa was surprised by her nomina on for this award, it is just and fi ng to afford her such recogni on. Chaplain’s Reflection ST AUGUSTINE AND ST MONICA

The feast of St Augus ne of Hippo is on 28 August and the feast of his mother, St Monica is on 27 August. It is unusual to celebrate the feast of mother and son one day a er the other but as we learn more about their lives, we discover a powerful story of love and faith. "Our heart is restless un l it rests in God." This is one of the famous quotes from St Augus ne in his book called Confessions, speaking about his life and his struggle to search for God. During 30 years he tried to reform his life but in his weakness he prayed: "Covert me, Lord, but can You wait un l tomorrow". However, what he could not accomplish with his own prayers, was done by the prayers of his mother St Monica. She tried to help her son, but St Augus ne entered into a life of sin and immorality, rejec ng her on mul ple occasions, nevertheless she con nued to love, pray and nurture her son throughout his wayward me. St Monica wept, prayed and sacrificed for her son for many years. Her greatest desire was to see the conversion of her son and God heard her prayers. St Augus ne become friends with St Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, and started looking for Jesus in his life. He was bap sed and become a priest. He said: “Late have I loved You, O Beauty so ancient and so new; late have I loved You!...You were within me, and I outside and in my unloveliness fell upon those lovely things You have made. You were with me and I was not with You. I was kept from You by those things, yet had they not been in You, they would not have been at all. You did call and cry to me and break open my deafness; and You did send forth Your beams and shine upon me and chase away my blindness...I tasted You, and now hunger and thirst for You; You did touch me, and I have burned for Your Peace.” Let us look at St Monica for an example of persistence because God will never abandon us. Never give up hope, keep praying, bring your loved ones up to the foot of the altar as Monica did. Later, St Augus ne became a Bishop and one of the most important and influen al Church Fathers and he would pray for his mother as he celebrated Mass on the Altar. What’s Happening in The Arts? YEAR 9 DRAMA

Recently, the Year 9 students studying Drama, performed a scripted Melodrama. Drama is a wonderful opportunity to gain confidence in a suppor ve environment. Lachlan Bas n, enjoyed playing a narrator with the help Teacher Assistant, Ms Rose Warburton. He was delighted to wear a green cloak and black hat to enhance the role. IT’S A WRAP!

The Scholas c Book Fair held at the Balmoral Street Campus was an outstanding success this week with almost $4,000 in sales. Part proceeds will go back to our College. There was such a lovely atmosphere whilst students went on the hunt for just the right book. Thank you to the College for suppor ng us in holding this event.
