EDITION 4 - JULY 2013 The crowd cheers and all lean forward waiting for the first glimpse of what’s coming. There’s no roaring of engines but that doesn’t stop the excitement in the air. Something is coming down the hay bailed lined track very fast, two low, mean looking trolleys rocketing side by side each other jostling for the best line to make the final corner that is racing towards them. Who’s nerves are going to crack first? Is it Sarah the gutsy preschool teacher? or is it the jet boat driver from Shotover Jet? Neither relents and they collide at the last minute, both now braking heavily, both out of control but its Sarah who regains her trolley just in time to fly over the line!! The crowd cheers, it’s one for the girls!! This is the Arrowtown trolley RACE and it’s so good to see it back. First raced in 2005 the cup is now up for the taking. If you are up for challenge or fancy yourself as a race driver then get a group together and start designing and building your trolley ready for Race Day on November 2nd 2013. The Trolleys race from outside the Preschool on Durham Street, down the hill and finish outside the Wine Shop on Ramshaw Lane. It is an all day event with practice laps, heats, racing, and finishing with a Grand Final – great for spectators with hopefully some thrills and spills as the drivers take each other on in some friendly local rivalry! The Trolley Race is a major fundraiser for the preschools and it is also a great community event - especially given that this year the Arrowtown Scouts are also going to benefit from the profits. There will also be plenty of attractions for the family, with food stalls and of course face painting. JULY 2013 Welcome to the first of my ‘Real Estate Round-ups’ in the Frankton Flyer! Each month I’ll be reporting on market trends and providing you with sales figures for your area to help you keep in touch with our market. The REINZ stats are always reporting on the previous month, so in this edition we are looking at June results. June sales activity this year was similar to June 2012 but at a reduced level to the April and May 2013 activity. This isnormal for this time of year as we enter winter. The strongest demand was for cheaper rental property being sold to local investors and family homes in suburbs benefiting from good winter sun. Overall we are seeing a drop in new listings of property for sale with the market especially tightunder $450,000. The volume of house and apartment sales in the Queenstown region has increased 7% in the last quarter ( April-June)compared to the same period last year. (168 sales in the 2nd quarter 2013 compared to 157 in the 2nd quarter 2012). There were 40 section sales which is the similar to the 38 in the June quarter as 2012. The median sale price of houses and apartments over the quarter was $555,000 up 4% on the June quarter 2012 of $535,000.

Local Sales Stats for June: Frankton: 3 bdrm unit @ $398,000, 4 bdrm home @ $587,000, Executive home @ $980,000 Lake Hayes Estate: 1 section @ $210,000, 1 x 3 bdrm home @ $540,000, 1 x 4 bdrm home @ $615,000 Kelvin Heights: 1 x 2 bdrm apartment @ $462,000, 1 x 4 bdrm apartment @ $700,000, 3 bdrm home @ $775,000 Arrowtown: 1 x 4 bdrm home @ $675,000, 1 x 3 bdrm home @ $780,000, 1 x 5 bdrm home @ $1,250,000, 2 x Millbrook homes @ $1,541,000 & $2,090,000

A great sweep of azure, reefs, sand and forest in the South Pacific, Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands. Only about one third of these volcanic remnants are inhabited, conjuring visions of unexplored paradise. Viti Levu is the largest and most developed island – home to the capital Suva and international transit point Nadi (pronounced ‘Nandi’) – and many beach front Fiji resorts. Cruising and island hopping through the nearby Yasawa islands is also popular with visitors.

FIJI LIKE A LOCAL

TOP ATTRACTIONS

WHERE TO STAY

Fiji serves up a fine concoction of things to do, most of which make this a water-lovers’ haven. If you go a little out of your way, you’ll be rewarded with coral gardens, manta rays and turtles when you dive the Great Astrolabe Reef off the tiny southern island of Kadavu. Surfers head to the Mamanuca islands for waves of legend. You could also jet boat up the Sigatoka River on Viti Levu, tour a Fijian village and try the famous local drink, kava. The Yasawa and Turtle Islands are cited as having some of the best beaches in the (sprawling) country. Find a hammock and just be.

Fiji restaurants and cafes with an emphasis on local cooking style will often use rice, sweet potatoes, taro, cassava, coconut and fish in their dishes. An example of a local dish is kokoda – raw fish salad with lime juice, onions, chillies, carrots, tomatoes and coconut cream. Many Fijians use their hands when eating and it’s common to sit on the floor. If you try the ubiquitous local drink kava, you won’t forget it in a hurry. Made from the root of a plant that’s a member of the pepper family, it makes your lips and tongue tingle and head light. Not known for its taste, more as a social lubricant, kava plays a central role in Fijian life.

Fiji accommodation varies across the islands from flash 5-star resorts with all inclusions, to budget accommodation and local bures. The global players like Shangri-La, InterContinental, Westin, Radisson, Hilton and Ridges are here. (Several of these are only a short transfer from Nadi.) Bures, or Fijian bungalows, can be found throughout the archipelago – some are more secluded than others – including Viti Levu, Malalo Island, Castaway Island, Turtle Island, the Yasawas and Mamanuca Islands. Fijians love children and are very family friendly but there are adults-only resorts catering to couples who want to get away sans little ones.

When you take advantage of a cheap flight to Fiji and start to explore this part of the South Pacific, you’ll get an introduction to ‘Fiji time’. It’s the same as island time. Things happen, when they happen. Why rush? You’re surrounded by beautiful scenery, friendly locals and tropical ocean. Relax. Enjoy it. See your family and friends as a gift; listen, laugh and love. Then you’ll be well on your way to seeing Fiji like a local.

fiji destination guide From it’s azure seas and white sand shoreline to it’s lush gardens and spectacular sunsets, Fiji is somewhere truly magical. There’s no better place to take a relaxing family holiday where the time is your own and you can do as much or as little as you please.

Milu Multhaup-AppletonMilu lives in Wanaka, previously from Christchurch but born in Golden Bay. Last July he had a string of injuries which ended with an ACL rupture, which put Milu out of the snowboard game for almost a year.

This is the most time he has had off snow since he was 10 years old. For a month now he has been back on snow and so far so good.

Milu is on the NZ High Performance Development, Salomon Snowboards, Bonfire Outerwear, Mons Royale, Smith Optics, HVY Thread Supply Co, and Madwax teams.

These guys all help him out heaps with gear, coaching and are generally awesome! Not to forget the support of his lovely mum and girlfriend Terra. In mid August Milu will be attending the Winter Games Slope Style World Cup at Cardrona , hoping to finish in the top half of the field, this would give him a good comeback to the competition tour.

This is the 5th of 8 World Cups, which are qualifying events for the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

“I have a peace that this is what I should be doing. I just want to play for people - that takes away the stress,” she said. “If success is an outflow from that, then that’s good, and if it isn’t, I’ll just keep doing it anyway.”Buy Holly Arrowsmith’s new album at www.hollyarrowsmith.bandcamp.com

Sam Maxwell is a true Queenstown lad. He was born in Queenstown in 1995 after his parents Jan and Ewan Maxwell moved up from Gore to open a PaperPlus shop in the Mall. Sam grew up with his 4 siblings attending St Joseph’s Primary School. It was there that he showed his aptitude for theatre and music, quickly establishing himself as the lead in their many school productions.

At the ripe age of eleven he received great acclaim in Queenstown’s Family Arts and Variety Concert with his older brother Tom as part of “The Blues Brothers”. Sam joined his first band at 14, “The Fletchers”, who placed in the top 25 finals in the Nationwide Rockquest.

Last year they opened for Pat Benatar, America and Bachmann Turner Overdrive at the annual Gibston Valley Concert. For the last two years Sam has taken the lead in the Wakatipu Highschool productions “Foot Loose” and “Dream Girls”. In April of this year Sam WON Queenstown’s annual “Songstars” competition, and he will now travel to Auckland in August to work with the exteemed Mike Chunn at York Studios, to record his award winning song, “Slipped and Fall”, a ballad in tribute to his late father, Ewan. Sam also won a Bruce Grant Foundation grant to attend selective workshops in Wellington to study at Toi Whakare (New Zealand’s premium dramatic arts school).

Last year Sam played the rock idol “Bobby” in “California Dreaming” and will star in the upcoming local production of “Twenty Seven”. Sam plans to make his music and drama his career.Check out more of what Sam is up to at www.facebook.com/whirlwindnz www.facebook.com/events/693682297324402/

“I’m a freeskier. I love freeride, I love freestyle & I love being in the mountains with positive people. Whatever the conditions, I just love to ski.”Born in Blenheim, New Zealand, Pete grew up on a high country sheep farm in the central province of Marlborough. At the local ski hill, Rainbow Valley Ski Area, he was hooked on skiing at 5 years old. As a grom Pete never raced nor took lessons but was constantly on the hunt for speed and air!

In his last year of high school he made the move south to Wanaka because he heard that students

were able to ski 3 days a week! The following year Pete ventured for the first time to the northern

hemisphere. Between working and graduating University Pete skied as much as physically and

financially possible ever since.

Pete represented New Zealand on the Freeride World Tour Qualifier series in 2010 & 2011 where placed in the top 50 and is now sponsored by 7 major brands: K2, Smith Optics, Sessions Outerwear, Icebreaker, Dakine, R&R Sport & Olympus Imaging.

Emma ButlerEmma is known for her colourful Ruby series, which was inspired by her first experience of Autumn in Arrowtown. She is currently working on a series of children’s books based around the character Ruby. Her latest body of work are a series of portraits, which investigate Emma’s fascination with the human pyche. They are quirky, bright and always decorative on the surface. Emma uses symbolism to create another layer of meaning to the paintings, which she is happy for the viewer to interpret as they wish. The latest of this series has just been selected for the ILT Southland Art Awards in Invercagill, and so in with a chance of winning the $8000 first prize. But where did this journey all begin?

Emma has been creative for as long as she can remember. Graduating in 2001 with a First Class Honours degree in Textiles, from Manchester Metropolitan University in England. In that same year she won “Best Use Of Colour” award, sponsored by Dulux paints, in London at New Designers, an exhibition dedicated to show casing the cream from all the university’s throughout the UK. So with an award, and a barrage of job offers under her belt, Emma had to make a decision about what career

path she was going to pursue. It was the record number of sales of her original paintings that she sold at her degree show that had given her most pleasure and so she became a freelance artist at the tender age of 21.

“I decided I would paint and sell my artwork for as long as it lasted and here I am still painting today!”The next few years would see Emma working from her home studio, selling paintings in contemporary galleries throughout England and working part-time at Hallmark cards. Hallmark provided her with an excellent grounding in commercial design and she had 30 or more cards, calenders and wrapping papers published with Hallmark. She went on to freelance for other publishers within England.

With this success under her belt, Emma decided to

embark on a round–the-world trip and so she discovered Queenstown.

It was love at first sight and like so many, she was eventually to gravitate here several years later, but not before over landing and camping in 11 countries in Africa over three months and painting from her balcony in Bondi Beach for a while.

Nine years later, Emma is firmly established in her studio in the Arts Centre on Stanley street, Queenstown, where she creates original works with oil and acrylic on paper and canvas and is represented by galleries throughout New Zealand. She also has a range of prints and cards published by NZ company, Image Vault, based in Christchurch.

“I like telling stories through my artwork, after all, everyone has a story to tell”

Emma’s work hangs happily in private art collections around the world and you can see her work in her studio, Artbay Gallery or at the website www.emmalouisebutler.com

Citrus-Braised Lamb ShanksIngredients2 Tbs. olive oil4 lamb shanks, about 1lb. (500 g.) eachSalt and freshly ground pepper1 carrot, finely chopped1 yellow onion, finely chopped2 celery ribs, finely chopped3 small sprigs fresh thyme1 bay leaf3 cloves garlic, minced1 1/2 Tbs. tomato paste2 cups (16 fl. oz./500 ml.) dry white wine1 cup (8 fl. oz./250 ml.) chicken brothGrated zest and juice of 1 lemonGrated zest and juice of 1 limeGrated zest and juice of 1 orange

InstructionsIn a large, heavy pot, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium-high heat. Season the shanks with salt and pepper. Working in batches, sear the shanks, turning as needed, until browned on all sides, 6-8 minutes. Transfer to a platter and pour off the fat from the pot.

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the pot and place over medium-low heat. Add the carrot, onion and celery and saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the thyme, bay leaf, garlic and tomato paste. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, season with pepper, and stir for 1 minute. Add the wine, broth and lemon and lime zests and juices.

Return the shanks to the pot and bring the liquid to a gentle simmer. Cover and cook in the oven, turning the shanks every hour, until the meat is completely tender, about 2 1/2 hours. Transfer the shanks to a platter and keep warm in the oven.

Pour the juices from the pot into a large, heatproof measuring pitcher and let stand for 1 minute. The fat will rise to the top. Use a bulb baster to transfer the juices underneath the fat to a small saucepan. Simmer to reduce slightly. Stir in the orange zest and juice.

Drizzle the reduced juices over the lamb shanks and serve. Serves 4.

Baked Hot Chocolate PuddingIngredients170 grams of dark chocolate, coarsely chopped8 tbsp unsalted butter3 large eggs2/3 cup sugarPinch of salt6 small scoops vanilla or coffee ice creamAbout 1/2 cup caramel sauce

InstructionsPosition a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 190 degrees.

Put the chocolate and butter in a medium heatproof bowl, preferably stainless steel, set it in a wide skillet of barely simmering water, and stir frequently until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. Remove the bowl from the skillet and set aside.

With the electric mixer, beat the eggs, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl at high speed until light, fluffy, and the consistency of the softly whipped cream (this can take 5 to 10 minutes with a hand-held mixer). Fold one-third of the eggs into the chocolate mixture, then scrape the chocolate batter over the remaining eggs and fold until blended. Divide the batter among the ramekins or bowls.

Place the bowls on the baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes (a little longer if the puddings were refrigerated), until the puddings are puffed, crusted, and deeply cracked but still gooey inside when tested with a toothpick.

Serve immediately, or let cool, cover, and keep at room temperature for up to a day.

To serve, top each pudding with a scoop of ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Caramel SauceIngredients1/2 cup sugar3 tablespoon butter1/4 heavy whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

InstructionsHeat sugar in a medium sauce pan over medium high heat. If you do not have a heavy bottom sauce pan add a spoon of water. Whisk until sugar melts and turns brown and then add butter and whisk. Once this has melted, take the pan off the heat and quickly add the cream and vanilla.

Accessories are a must! Finish your look off with a fun embellishment like a broach

or necklace that can be pinned at the crown.

1.Gather your fabric

2.Measure a rectangle that will fit around your head when twisted.

3. Sew the short ends of rectangle together to create a tube.

4.Turn the sides of the outside out, tuck raw edges in, and pin together. You can’t turn it completely inside out. It’s going to look like a bunched up piece of fabric, but this is correct. Sew these pinned edges together

5. Flip the turban right side out through the hole

6. Cut addition piece.

7. Stitch the hole in the turban together by hand.

8. Wrap the narrow fabric tube you made earlier around the turban and stitch the two sides together to cinch the turban as tight as you want it. Cut the excess fabric of the narrow tube and roll it so the seam is hidden. And you’re done!
