USAG Schweinfurt Public Affairs staff report

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- These last few months have been challenging in many different ways for the employees of the U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt, yet they have accomplished every mission they were given across the spectrum.

Senior members of the garrison staff thank these employees for their commitment to excellence, taking care of others and doing so on or ahead of schedule with a positive approach.

This thank you is extended to each individual Schweinfurt Soldier, civilian, local national employee, contractor and volunteer. Individuals do matter — and each of them has contributed to the garrison’s success.

In recognition of the garrison Installation Management Command employees here, USAG Schweinfurt will hold a Team Appreciation Day for the garrison staff on Oct. 26 from 2-5 p.m. at the Conn Club.

The senior leadership team, beginning with Lt. Col. Michael Runey, USAG Schweinfurt garrison commander, will recognize and thank the entire workforce for its service, dedication and accomplishments.

This occasion is personally sponsored by the senior leadership team as a sincere thank you and a token of their appreciation.

The event will begin with an All Hands call from 2-2:30 p.m., followed by food and drinks. The first-round meal and beverage will be provided

free of charge. The event is for garrison IMCOM employees only.

USAG Schweinfurt offices will be closed to honor garrison employees. The Health Clinic, Shoppettes, Main Exchange, commissary, MP and fire station, Child Development Center, School Age Center, all Family Child Care homes, all schools, dining facilities and the Bradley Inn will remain open.

To maximize participation, all other garrison services will close early that day at 1:30 p.m.

For those services the garrison cannot close (e.g. Provost Marshal Office, Fire Department), employees will rotate to enable the garrison team to personally thank each employee and provide each person a chance to partake in the festivities.

The celebration is for everyone’s continued engaged, inspiring, results-oriented leadership, focusing on the three core tasks: Army Force Generation (ARFORGEN), life/health/safety and strengthening community.

BAMBERG, Germany -- Walking into the Family Advocacy building on a Tuesday or Friday morning, one may find a group of parents playing with their infants and toddlers.

The play mornings, which are a part of the New Parent Support Program, take place on Tuesday and Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m. and are widely attended by community members.

Play mornings are free, and they provide a chance to socialize with other new parents. Also, it helps connect parents and children so they do not feel alone in the community.

“It gives me something to look forward to,” said Cierra Thompson, a parent who participates in the program. “The parents and kids have a chance to bond.”

Many friendships have formed from the program, Thompson said.

“I have met new friends, it is a great way to get to know one another,” said Ashly Dubose, another parent in the program. “The kids look forward to it and the program is structured.”

A favorite time for both the parents and children is the music time at the end of each play morning.

“My son loves the music time,” Dubose said. “He knows to grab the instrument and to come and sit to play. He loves the drums”

The New Parent Support Program offers support, education, information and resources for all new parents.

The program is military-wide and is for Families that are expecting or who have infants and children up to age 4.

At U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg, the program has two staff members that support each other by stepping in and helping out according to their strengths.

Elaine Sexton is a registered nurse with a background in obstetrician, labor and delivery, while Dorothy Boerste is a licensed marriage and family therapist.

“We can help get parents connected,” Sexton said, referring to how the program helps community members. “We have knowledge on infant and child growth. If Families need help with other issues, like financial needs, we will refer them to a service that can help.”

Sexton and Boerste conduct home visits as a part of the program, allowing the Families to talk with the staff members in the comfort and privacy of their home.

They also arrange the visits at the convenience of the Family, whether they are required in the early morning, throughout the day or into the evening.

with the Schweinfurt High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps attended, while the National Honor Society contributed nine. It was the largest run the Ladies Auxiliary, with the assistance of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation have organized to date. The Ladies Auxiliary raised $1,330.

To spread the word, an information booth was set up at the Save-a-Life Day Expo on Sept. 25 and also one at the Oktoberfest on Sept. 28. The public was quite impressed and at the Oktoberfest celebrations, many spontaneous donations were made. Ladies Auxiliary has set up booths at the Main Exchange on Ledward Barracks in September and will continue through October. Thus far, $1,300 has been collected at the booths.

Of special note are the efforts of the Schweinfurt High School. Under the guidance of the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society, the school raised $900. The societies organized a coin challenge among the classes, with the full support from the faculty and staff.

With their help, the daunting task of trying to raise $10,000 by the middle of November has now become more manageable. The National

Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society will receive a certificate recognizing their donation and will be entered into the Monument Album as Platinum Donor.

Ladies Auxiliary will have an information booth at the Ledward Main Exchange Oct. 14, 16, 28 and 30. On Oct. 28, the Ladies Auxiliary will

also have a Halloween Basket Raffle.

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- “Everyday’s a new day with a new page to be written on; So I guess it’s true: You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.”

That’s how Spc. Samuel H. Park at a memorial opened his poem written in honor of his friend, who died here last month.

A memorial ceremony was held at the Ledward Chapel Oct. 12 for Spc. Antonio S. Bloodworth of the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, who died Sept. 20.

Spc. Bloodworth, 36, from Houston, Texas, was assigned to B Company of the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, which was headquartered in Schweinfurt from 2009 to the summer of 2012.

Bloodworth served in the Army for more than 10 years as a cable systems installer, having first joined in 1997 and re-enlisting again after a stint in civilian life.

“He knew a lot and knew what was expected of him as a Soldier, and he conducted himself in that manner. He was somewhat of the fatherly type,” said Master Sgt. Delton Roberts, B Company first sergeant, in remarks made at the memorial ceremony.

Spc. Bloodworth deployed to Macedonia in 1999, and deployed to Afghanistan once in 2007 and again in 2010.

“Antonio’s contributions to Operation Enduring Freedom and the company were impeccable,” said Capt. Nicholas J. Hitt, commander of B Company.

While deployed to Afghanistan, Bloodworth laid computer and phone cables, installing more than 12,000 feet of cable and 6,000 feet of fiber at various locations including Camp Marmal and Camp Dehdadi II, Hitt said.

Spc. Bloodworth was stationed in Fort Huachuca, Ariz., with the 69th Signal Company. He also served with the Army 808th Engineer Company in Houston and the 286th Signal Company out of Fort Bliss, Texas, before arriving in Schweinfurt with the 44th ESB.

The 44th ESB falls under the 7th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade headquartered out of Schweinfurt, and the 5th Signal Command out of Wiesbaden. Brig. Gen. Bruce T. Crawford,

5th Signal commanding general, was in attendance at the ceremony.

Spc. Bloodworth’s awards and decorations included the Army Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Unit Citation, three Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with the Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon and the NATO Medal.

Spc. Bloodworth is survived by his mother, Gladys Bloodworth.

BAMBERG, Germany -- U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg Commander Lt. Col. Michelle L. Bienias briefed tenant unit commanders and program directors on the “road to closure” of USAG Bamberg during the monthly tenant unit commander’s conference, Oct. 9 at Bamberg’s Warner Conference Center.

According to Bienias, the main goals of the closure plan are assessing the community’s needs, continuing to provide community service while maintaining quality of life for the tenant units, identifying eventual service gaps and filling them, as well as managing expectations of the USAG Bamberg community.

At USAGs Ansbach, Schweinfurt and Bamberg, the garrison commanders have a big mission: The successful movement of a population and government housing footprint equal to Fairfax, Va.

This must be done while maintaining quality of life for Soldiers and Families, continuation of redeployments and reintegrating combat units, with a shrinking workforce and maximum resource savings.

“We are continuing to provide the service, we are supporting the ARFORGEN (Army Force Generation) program, and we will ensure that we have a successful closure,” Bienias said.

“We have one year and nine months left before we close USAG Bamberg,” she added.

“The Operation Order (OPORDER) for the closure which was put out in June is broken down in three phases. We are about to start transitioning into phase two of our plan,” Bienias said.

In this phase, units and programs start turning in excess equipment. During the briefing to the tenant unit commanders, Bienias recommended getting ahead of the game, since approximately 20 other units spread all over Europe will relocate or deactivate in the near future and all will compete for the same resources.

Bienias stressed the importance of units providing correct numbers for better planning.

“I know it’s time consuming, but it will result in big dividends come next year,” she said.

“Clean out your offices and use the Directorate of Public Works checklist to close your buildings and motor pools,” Bienias said.

Although the garrison is almost two years away from closure, the community is already feeling the impact.

Whereas the community’s population base still remains on the current level, garrison staff have already begun to leave the garrison to accept

other positions.

“The remaining workforce has to pick up additional duties to continue providing the services. We have leveraged resources from Schweinfurt, Ansbach and the Installation Management Command Europe (IMCOM-E) and we are getting the support we need,” she said, thanking the units which have been sending military personnel as “integrated Soldier support” to fill gaps at Bamberg’s Installation Access Control Office, the garrison postal services, and financial personnel for Army Community Service.

“Next fall we might see significant changes,” Bienias said, which will result in service consolidations at the garrison headquarters building.

Bienias said that mail and commissary services will be available in Bamberg until the end. Army and Air Force Exchange Services is looking into consolidating various services later next year, but all decisions will be made based upon the population base of the garrison which will be smaller than now.

The garrison will try to make consolidations happen with minimal disruption to the community.

“We are in the business of taking care of Soldiers and family members,” Bienias said. “That is our main priority.”

“All the girls tried really hard and it showed,” she said. “I feel really good about this year and really happy to be a part of it.”

Editor’s note: The Franconian News is trying something new. U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Public Affairs Office has found several spouses of currently deployed Soldiers who have thoughts that might be helpful, supportive and encouraging for other spouses.

By Crystal Mahani What’s the difference between something being hard and something being a challenge? When we say “My husband being gone is hard,” that’s a definitive statement. It is hard – that’s indisputable. When we say, “My husband being gone is a challenge,” it’s more subjective. It’s a challenge because we have to endure through it, get past it and know on the other side is the relief we yearn for.

What does it mean when we say something is hard? It’s not last year’s fruit cake or my regular attempts at gooey cookies. It’s hard; it’s difficult; it sucks. It’s a descriptive ending. It’s final and goes no further. However, it doesn’t quite sum up what it’s like to have a deployed spouse. It isn’t just that deployments are hard. There’s more to our complex and often complicated lives.

Describing running errands with a deployed husband and kids in tow as a challenge lends

the understanding that it’s difficult, but doable. A challenge is something we can either step up to or run away from; it’s something we can handle really well or crash and burn. Most days we probably do it quite well…then there are those other days that staying in bed feels better than facing the world. Either way, we can learn from both, and yes, both are OK.

What’s worse than the pity face when people hear your spouse is gone? Oh, the pity face! When people give that face and offer cliché words of encouragement, I’ve altered my response to be, “It’s challenging.” It communicates to them that yes, it’s hard, but not defeating. Internally, I get rather inspired. There’s a part of me that puffs up like a peacock and says, “Watch me.”

There’s something to be done with a challenge. It’s not an ending; it can be the beginning of something new. It can be either a task or a personal venture. What is something you’ve wanted to accomplish? Going back to school? Getting in killer shape? Organizing the unopened boxes from the last PCS? Whatever it is, you can do something with it – that’s the challenge. Finding the time, focus or motivation might be the challenge, not the actual task. A small change in perspective can make a big difference in getting us to that point.

A challenge presents the idea that the circumstance of deployment isn’t just about what we lose, but what we stand to gain. We lose time with our spouse, our children lose time with their other parent and we lose sharing the day-to-day moments. What we can gain is a sense of independence which takes strength, courage and confidence.

Once I mowed the lawn for the first time, the next time I knew I had to do it, it wasn’t daunting. I still procrastinated and complained, but the task proved itself to be quite small and insignificant. We can gain self-awareness and understanding of what we are capable of, what we can endure and what we can do on our own. Would help be nice? Yes, of course. But can we do it on our own? Most of the time, the answer is yes, because we can. At the end of this deployment, or 10 years down the line, it would be nice to look back and see fruits of my labor (eh-hem, super gooey cookies), gratefulness and happiness from the separation (our family together again) and an assurance that I didn’t dawdle or wallow because I’ll be stronger and healthier in mind and body. Circumstances are hard; how we deal with them is the challenge.

Deployments are hard challenges that can be overcome

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- At the beginning of the fiscal year, the 172nd Support Battalion likes to jump start re-enlistment with a massive ceremony.

At the Finney Gym on Conn Barracks, 42 Soldiers rededicated themselves to serving the Army during a mass re-up ceremony on Oct. 3. Many of the Soldiers in the battalion will soon be going through a permanent change of station. Before these Soldiers relocate to their next duty station, where they might face a different set of rules for re-enlistment – and with the U.S. Army’s imminent drawdown, according to Sgt. 1st Class Melvin Rowe, the 172nd SB’s retention officer – the battalion wanted to take care of its Soldiers.

“We wanted to make sure we identified qualified Soldiers who aspired to stay in the Army, get these Soldiers re-enlisted as soon as possible and thus alleviate the stress of the unknown concerning their military careers from them and their families,” said Rowe, who has re-enlisted almost 200 Soldiers during his two and half years with the 172nd SB.

Typically, the spouse of a Soldier re-enlisting is a backdrop to the traditional re-enlistment formation and is somewhat forgotten. However, the spouses of those who re-enlisted in the ceremony were honored for their support and sacrifices they have made.

“Military spouses are often rearing and caring for the children as a single parent, bearing the responsibly of long work hours, and enduring the burden of deployments,” Rowe said.

The 172nd Infantry Brigade Commander, Col. Edward Bohnemann, eagerly supported the 172nd SB as he made a trip from Grafenwöhr,

where he is stationed, for the observance.

USAG Bamberg Public Affairs staff report

BAMBERG, Germany -- Warner Barracks is conducting a full-scale force protection exercise Friday evening between 5:30-10 p.m. The purpose of the exercise is to assess the ability of Warner Barracks’ reaction to a crisis on the post.

“The annual full force protection exercise tests our response system to ensure we have the resources and personnel to respond to a natural or man-made emergency,” said Michael McCullom, Force Protection officer.

Warner Barracks’ community members can anticipate minimal disturbances during the exercise. They can expect prolonged delays at the gate for incoming and outgoing traffic during the exercise, officials said. People should not be alarmed if they hear loud noises during the exercise.

Community services, like the Exchange, will not be affected during the exercise, and they will be open during standard operating hours.

Recycling Tips1. Reduce food waste by making a meal plan and a shopping list at the beginning of the week. Stick to your grocery list and buy what you really need, rather than waste food since you have too much. Get creative and make other meals with your leftovers, or freeze a portion for a later date.

2. Buy products made from recycled materials. You can save trees and stop the ruthless exploitation of resources.

Eco-Friendly Tips

Energy-saving Tips1. Skip rinsing the dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. It wastes energy and water! If you do rinse, use cold water and fill the sink.

2. Consider LED (Light Emitting Diode) light bulbs. They initially cost more, but they use less energy and last longer than other light bulbs. They do not contain mercury, which is harmful to health when broken.

Water-saving Tips1. When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with soapy water and the other with rinse water.

2. If your toilet flapper doesn’t close after flushing, replace it.
