SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- More than 350 elementary and middle school students took part in the annual Environmental Awareness Days hosted by the Directorate of Public Works on May 22-24 at the Conn Barracks recycling center.

For more than 20 years, DPW has been hosting this multitopic, environmentally focused field trip for kids.

“And they like it,” said Lothar Rueckert, the chief of the Environmental Division and one of the leading figures behind the event.

Students in grades 2-7 from Schweinfurt Elementary Middle School basked in the clear skies and pleasant breeze as they trekked from the school to the recycling center and back, with backpacks in tow.

“The event is designed to educate children about the relationship between our daily lives and the environment,” Rueckert said. “Everyone should care about the environment because we only have one earth and the resources are limited. If we don’t care and generate too much waste, someday it will or might kill us.”

The DPW education station utilized a recycling table modeled after Germany’s recycling system to illustrate the process from when garbage is separated to its transformation into a reusable product. Other station topics included alternate energies, compost use, paper manufacturing, Lyme disease prevention, live fire training and a hedgehog habitation.

“It would take one year in the classroom to learn all of this information,” said Wolfgang Froehling, the environmental engineer for DPW.

Stateside number gives callers easy access to Army in Europe from U.S.By U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs

HEIDELBERG, Germany -- Anyone can now call the Army in Europe’s official Defense Switched Network phone numbers from the U.S. via a standard stateside commercial telephone number.

The number – 301-981-1059 gives callers in the U.S. who do not have a DSN line available immediate commercial access to an operator in Germany, who will then connect them to the appropriate DSN number in Europe.

“We realized that some people stateside not used to calling overseas are put off by foreign access codes and country codes,” said U.S. Army Europe Chief of Public Affairs Bryan Hilferty. “I know I was.

“So we designed this system to encourage communication with incoming Soldiers and Families, as well as with U.S. citizens or researchers who have questions about the Army in Europe.”

“However, you still need to know the unit you want to connect with, or their DSN number, or the operator cannot complete the call,” Hilferty said. “And remember, the Army in Europe is six hours ahead of the East Coast, so best to call us when it is morning in the U.S.”

Callers must pay commercial calling costs to the Maryland 301 area code, but there are no overseas calling charges, and the number is accessible from any phone.

This number is for official use only, not for “morale and welfare calls,” to access a civilian number, or for other personal use. Furthermore, the primary method for official communications remains DSN or email.

For more information, send an email to [email protected] or call us at +49 (0)6221-57-7270 or call 1-301-981-1059 and ask for DSN 370-7270.

BAMBERG, Germany -- Roasting a marshmallow on a crackling campfire under the stars out in the wilderness listening to a friend or family member tell a ghost story is the atmosphere that the Night at the Lake event provides.

On June 15, U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg is having their third annual Night at the Lake at Engineer Lake.

Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation organizes this event to provide a safe camping atmosphere for all community members to enjoy.

Whether community members want to pitch a tent and spend the night or if they just want to stop by to enjoy the free entertainment provided, all are welcome at this family-friendly outdoor event.

“This event is being conducted with the intent to capitalize on the superb recreational environment that our Engineer Lake provides community members,” said Joshua Moore, Outdoor Recreation director. “Especially those living on post, with the ability to spend the night under the stars, while enjoying a cost-free and family-friendly entertainment within walking distance of home.”

If one requires a tent or other camping equipment, a limited supply of camping equipment is available for rent at a reduced rate at Outdoor Recreation.

Items available include tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and propane

stoves.

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- Jasmine Morales’ resume boasts volunteer experience with the Armed Forces Network, the Fort Hood Care Team and with the Schweinfurt Public Affairs Office.

Yet, this is only a fraction of the volunteer work she has taken on for the military community over the past nine years.

Her performance has earned her the Volunteer of the Year 2007 AFN Bavaria, two Gold Medal presidential pins from President Barrack Obama, several Volunteer of the Month awards, a Certificate of Appreciation from brigade and 2nd place winner of the Army-wide Keith L. Ware Award for best news article.

“My very first military coin was handed to me at AFN Wurzburg from the sergeant major of the Army,” said Morales. “At one point I had more coins than my husband.”

Interestingly enough, she has also portrayed the voice of the Downy Bear and escorted former President George W. Bush during a Public Affairs event.

With her genuine and upbeat disposition, it is not difficult to imagine that she would be so involved with the military public and its Families — namely, her years of volunteer work within various Family Readiness Groups.

USAG Schweinfurt staff writer Spc. Latoya Dallas sat down with Jasmine and asked her a

few poignant questions.

Spc. Latoya Dallas: You’ve never joined the military, right?

Jasmine Morales: I wish. At least for one contract.

LD: If you did join, which (military occupational specialty) would you choose?

JM: I’d be a 46R which is a broadcast journalist. My bachelor is in the communication field because ultimately, I wanted to be a film producer, but ended up in advertising. One thing about that field is that you have to build relationships and you come across a lot of different cultures because you travel to so many different places. Simultaneously, you make the connections that will help you execute your job. To make the client happy is ultimately the goal in advertising.

LD: This all sounds similar to what the Family Readiness Group is about.

JM: One of the advantages that I bring to the table as a FRG leader is that I had an innate sense to learn about all the community

agencies that the military has to offer, especially living overseas. As a previous radio host for AFN Bavaria, I had to tailor my show to that audience. I’m talking about the whole Bavaria state of Germany. So, I had to make sure my information and statistics were correct. I stayed on top of all kinds of information for when any listener called and asked a question about anything. Staying on top of Army policies and agency requirements gives me the capacity to be able to answer Families’ questions and solve their problems. Be the facilitator.

LD: I will say one word and you tell me the first thing that comes to mind…Army.

Campers do not have to worry about cooking their own food while camping out.

Family and MWR will be selling food at the lake from their imbiss wagon.

Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and beverages, including beer, will be available during the evening. In the morning, there will be breakfast burritos for sale.

Camp fires will be burned in fire-bowls provided by ODR and will be distributed throughout the camping areas by ODR personnel.

“Firewood will be provided, although a little volunteer ax work would

be greatly appreciated,” Moore said.

There are no specific rules or restrictions for the event other than the existing ban on fishing and swimming at Engineer Lake.

“The number one rule is to relax and have a good time,” Moore said.

Those who would like to attend the event can start setting up their tent at 3 p.m. The live music starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. followed by a family-friendly movie at 8:30 p.m.

This year Arizona Joel will be returning with his acoustic guitar to provide the live music.

Bouncy castles will be on site for play during the daylight hours.

Night at the Lake was one of the events submitted to help earn USAG Bamberg the 2011 Army Recreation Award for Best Recreation Program Medium Garrison.

By Sgt. Kingsley Dike, 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- Soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment are continuing the tradition of rendering quality service and improving the lives of others in the community.

From May 17-22, the unit launched a troops-to-teachers initiative with the Schweinfurt Elementary School on Askren Manor where Soldiers volunteered for a week, teaching elementary school children basic survival skills and different aspects of the military life.

The program received rave reviews and commendation from school officials and parents who, for one week, were in awe.

Sgt. Tequia Hudson, a supply sergeant and one of the participants, said the concept of the initiative was simple.

The goal was to get the children excited and bring to life the natural and innate abilities of every child for learning, for participation in a team event and to instill the discipline and focus necessary to complete an individual event.

For one week, the elementary school was a beehive of activities with excited children moving from one station to the other.

The Soldier teachers, as they called themselves, set up four stations in the school grounds.

They included “Life in Afghanistan”, medics and first aid, military uniform gallery and a functional motor pool with Humvees.

The “Life in Afghanistan” station had a big TV screen in a tent reminiscent of the tents Soldiers live in when deployed overseas.

It was complete with cots; sleeping bags; meals ready to eat, or MREs; office space with laptops and maps of Afghanistan.

The children who have parents deployed to Afghanistan excitedly tried to locate the region their parents are serving and attempted mock trials of a Skype conversation with people back home.

Some even tasted the famed MRE that is a staple of Soldiers’ sustenance in either training or combat environment.

The medic and first aid station was a major draw for the children.

The knowledgeable team of Staff Sgt. Eddie Johnson, a combat medic, Spc. Lennon Grinols, Spc. Robert Copeland and Sgt. Rachel Harden used the Army standard hands-on approach to energize the children as they learned how to render first aid, take care of bleeding from minor cuts and sprains before digging deep on managing head injuries and abdominal wounds.

The sight of the dummy on a stretcher was at first scary to the children.

However, as they got more involved, they got used to working around them and placing bandages and tourniquet on the lower extremities of the dummy.

The children were also taught about the usefulness of military gear in preventing injuries and casualties in the battlefield.

They put on the Army combat helmets, elbow pads and kneepads, as well as the eye protection goggles and ear plugs.

Bundeswehr and U.S. Army enjoy friendly German-American competitionBy Bianca Sowders, USAG Ansbach Public Affairs

ANSBACH, Germany -- A unit of the German army, the Bundeswehr, stationed in Ellwangen hosted a two-day partnership event for Soldiers from U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach.

The Bundeswehr’s driver’s education center invited their American partners to participate in their annually required qualification for the Schuetzenschnur, the shooting badge, and the Leistungsabzeichen, a sports badge available in bronze, silver and gold.

Thirty-three garrison Soldiers received the Schuetzenschnur on Monday, 15 of them achieved the golden badge; eight Soldiers qualified the next day for the Leistungsabzeichen in gold, which included a 200 meter swim event and track and field competitions in the morning and a 12-kilometer ruck march through the Swabian countryside under the mid-day sun.

Many Soldiers felt this was one of the best training events of their career.

The German hosts put together a fabulous barbecue on Monday evening and entertained their guests with campfire stories. One of the best side-

stories to come out of this partnership event was that five Soldiers from the Warrior Transition Unit used this opportunity to build confidence and trust in their ability to return to duty.

USAG Ansbach PhotoGerman and American Soldiers race during a two-day event hosted by the Bundeswehr stationed in Ellwagen on Monday. The Bundeswehr’s driver’s education center invited Soldiers to participate in their annually required qualification for the shooting badge and sports badge.

Sgt. Joshua Barnes and his team of Cpl. David Collier, Spc. Cody Libert and Spc. Alonzo Sirmon demonstrated how to strip down a bare vest with no armor and the one with body armor. The children had fun packing their rucksack.

Sgt. Steven Henderson, Pfc. Nicolas Trouche, Pfc. Dominic Fontenot, Spc. Joshua Hensen, Spc. Antonio Holmes and Spc. Jesus Pasada ran the motor pool operations.

The children were shown how to conduct preventive maintenance checks on a vehicle, with special emphasis on the importance of such checks before embarking on any trip.

Then the kids got inside the Humvees, put on a seatbelt and used the signal lights to indicate what directions they intended to go in a mock drive.

The instructors showed the children the seatbelt cutter and the window breakers and how handy they could become in an accident.

First Sgt. Gregory Scott and Capt. Christopher Munar, Rear Detachment commander, visited the school to see the Soldier teachers in action. Scott said he was impressed.

“It is gratifying to see our Soldiers show these immense skills of conveying complex information in very simple terms that children can grasp,” Scott said. “We would continue to seek ways to serve our community particularly helping the schools help our children.”

Summer reading program registrations begin June 13By Simon Hupfer, USAG Bamberg Public Affairs

BAMBERG, Germany -- Summer is the time for all kinds of delicious things: barbecues, strawberry ice cream with waffles, watermelons and – yes! – books!

The 2012 Summer Reading program is kicking off June 20 at Bamberg’s community library.

This year’s program is called “Reading is Soooooo Delicious” and will be stuffed with various programs to encourage reading and stress the importance of good reading skills.

All programs are open to children 5 years through 17 years old; registration starts June 13 at Bamberg’s community library.

“Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., except on July 4, we will offer different activities,” said Karen Lazzeri, Bamberg’s library director.

Every registered reader will receive a reading log and a bag filled with little toys, pencils and stickers. Participants will have to record 10 books in their log book; three of them must be either Newbery Medal, Honorary Newbery Medal or Caldecott Award winners, Lazzeri said.

“All eligible books have a red dot on the spine and can easily be identified

in our library,” she said.

In addition, participants will complete one project with the “Reading Is Soooooo Delicious” theme or their favorite book, Lazzeri said.

Preschoolers can earn prizes as well by being read to.

During the summer reading program, participants can enjoy some delicious field trips.

“We are going to see how food is prepared at Burger King on July 11 and have lunch there afterwards,” Lazzeri said. “The program will be concluded with an award ceremony for the best readers, children’s bowling and pizza at the Birchview Lanes Bowling Center on July 18. The reading program is a perfect way to bridge the time between two school years.”

The library has new hours of operation and will now be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays the library will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. During American and German holidays, the library will be closed.

For more information visit the community library, Building 7047, or call 0951-300-1740.

Spouses’ Corner: It’s healthy to afford yourself a little luxuryEditor’s note: The Franconian News is trying something new. U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Public Affairs Office has found several spouses of currently deployed Soldiers who have thoughts that might be helpful, supportive and encouraging for other spouses.

By Isha Greene

It’s no secret that life without our Soldier is difficult. It’s not fun, it’s not easy and the pride comes and goes. This is especially true when you have a sick baby, another child who needs your help with a report on Egypt, a car that won’t start and “oh, would you mind baking cookies for the bake sale on Friday?”

All of these things are happening at once and just when you feel your about to snap, he calls! So of course you lie (most of us do anyway – we know there’s no need to upset him with things he feels useless to help you with anyway). Nope, we lie and say everything is fine; we can handle it and we miss them, wish they were home, hand the kids the phone and smile. When you hang up you’re actually smiling! But, the relief of hearing he’s okay is cut short by crying and “what’s for dinner” requests.

So what do you do? How do you remain calm and “handle it” just in case that euphoric call doesn’t come just in the nick of time?

Step 1: Hire a housekeeper/maid/cleaning lady, whatever you want to call her. I did and I would do it again! Granted, mine only comes once every two weeks, but it has saved my sanity, and every other week, I feel like I have less weight on my shoulders. I know I can come home after a crazy Monday of whatever I did and KNOW that I will walk into a house that doesn’t need to be cleaned by me!

Of course, it sounds like cheating. For a long time as a stay-at-home mom, I would give “those” moms the stink eye too. “Ugh, she doesn’t even work – why does she need help?” HA! Because ladies, nowhere does is say in the “Army Wives” or “Mother of Three Survival Guide” that you have to do it all! Trust me, I wrote my book and it doesn’t say that!

You may think you can’t afford it. You may believe your husband may not approve. You may believe your friends will talk about you behind your back saying you can’t cut it in this lifestyle. Well I say, “raspberries” – You can afford it, your husband is going to let you do what you need to do to be happy because he wants you home when he gets back, and those friends talk about you anyway, so why care? Your real ones will want your helper’s name!

It’s a big help, and it keeps the house tidy especially when you just don’t have it in you to put the laundry away, clean that nasty pot, or get to that darn stain! The only thing we can depend on as spouses is change. Some change is good, some is bad. It’s healthy to afford yourself a little luxury in such chaos.

So remember:

Step 1: Get some help! Better to have someone come over to help you out (cook/clean or watch the kids so you can do the others) rather than to be known as the stinky house/apartment in the building.

If you really can’t afford it, ask a close friend to help you out (preferably someone you have dirt on, that way she’s less likely to talk about yours)!

Smooches!

JM: Family Covenant.

LD: FRG.

JM: Facilitating.

LD: While researching the FRG, I came across this, “Unit FRGs fosters a sense of belonging to the unit and community and provides a vehicle for Families to develop friendships while they gain information about the unit and community.” Do you personally get these feelings here at USAG Schweinfurt?

JM: I do. We can work on improving this. It does exist, but there is still a divide somewhere in there. When I first joined the Army community and went through FRG training, it wasn’t about building friendships. My understanding of FRG was to be able to provide all the information needed to be self-sufficient in the time where you might need something. So that you are well-educated on what’s available so that if you need it, you can do it on your own. This is the main thing for me. Friendships come second in my opinion. You can really help a friend when you have all this information. That just improves that friendship.

LD: How can the FRG be improved?

JM: I find it difficult to answer this question because there are so many different people. You might think this one thing will improve it, but not everyone might agree that it’s important or will actually improve it. [After mulling over the question, Morales does realize an improvement.] FRGs can improve if every individual or family member that is a part of FRG comes with an open mind. For instance, a veteran spouse may have sat through countless ACS financial programs. However, if she comes with an open mind, it probably wouldn’t seem like something repetitive. It might allow her to learn something that she really didn’t

know that can benefit her, her Family, friends and so on. Be able to be receptive, without judgment, and beyond the preconceptions from previous FRG experiences. Be willing to put your guard down if you have to and know that the FRG is for you. Don’t bad mouth the FRG because others might or because you had a bad experience. Always arrive at your new FRG group with an open mind—as a new person—so that you can be receptive to this new leadership. It could be a ‘good different’. If it’s a ‘bad different,’ that is what open forums are for.

LD: What is the FRG not?

JM: In the nine years that I’ve been in the military community, the most common things that I’ve heard among FRG groups is that FRG is not a babysitter, taxi service or ATM. To be a good leader, you have to be able to identify the exceptions, to know who really is in need, and who needs something but they can do it. I would add that FRG is not here to tell you what to do. FRG is here to tell you what you can do with what is available to you. Period.

LD: What is the least pleasurable part about being in the FRG?

JM: There can already be a “fault image” of you as a FRG leader. Some may not feel good about me or other individuals being their “leader.” When in fact, there should be a good feeling because you have a designated person that you can come to for something that will impact you, your life, or your family in some cases. Get to know me. Ask me questions if you want. I really care about what’s going on and that’s why I’m in this position.

LD: What situation have you never been confronted with that you thought you would as an FRG leader?

JM: Knock on wood. I’ve never had a casualty during a deployment or have had to activate the Care Team while our Soldiers are away in a combat zone. I hope to never have to experience that.

BAMBERG, Germany -- Summer vacation is around the corner and community members looking to make travel plans through SatoTravel at Warner Barracks will have to look elsewhere starting June 15.

According to SatoTravel management, leisure travel will be given up in Bamberg, said Karin Stiefler, U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg Transportation Office Branch manager.

“The reason why we are losing the leisure agent is not published,” Stiefler said.

Leisure services will still be available at USAG Ansbach and Schweinfurt travel offices if community members are willing to commute to make travel plans.

Community members can also use the following methods to book leisure travel through SatoTravel:

• Visit the website www.europe.satovacations.com - online bookings are available as well as online booking requests.

• Call the leisure booking and service center from home Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 06302-923717.

“We also encourage people to use the local travel offices off post and other commercial travel websites,” Stiefler said.

There is however, one exception as to when leisure travel can be booked at the travel office at Warner Barracks after June 15.

“Leisure travel in conjunction with traveling on orders is considered official business and will be processed,” Stiefler said.

Official business travel includes Permanent Change of Station, Expiration of Time of Service, Temporary Duty assignment or Emergency Leave.

Currently there are two agents at the travel office to help customers with official business travel and one leisure agent at the Bamberg office.

“We are hoping to keep the leisure agent for the official business part,” Stiefler said.

Official travel business hours remain 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

For more information, call 0951-935-030.

College Level Examination Program and DANTES Subject Standardized tests.

Most of Teall’s college credits came from those two sources, through the National Test Center.

Many people have helped him to succeed, and Teall is grateful for their patronage.

“I couldn’t have done it without the help of Shirley Ferguson, the Education Center officer,” said Teall. “Because of her efforts, the University of Maryland brought the National Test Center to Katterbach. I got instant feedback about whether or not I passed the tests. With the National Test Center, all the CLEP and DSST Tests were made available.”

Last summer alone, Teall earned 24 semester credits during his break from high school, studying diverse topics such as marketing, world religions and art history.

He found reliable resources and helpful textbooks to study for the tests; Teall especially used websites designed for Department of Defense military and civilians as a way to ascertain if he could likely pass the CLEP and DSST tests.

After studying for seven years in German schools, Teall decided to return to a DoDEA school for his 11th and 12th grade years. Part of that decision was the proximity of the Education Center where he could take tests more frequently.

He also wanted to learn Spanish, after taking seven years of German and three years of French in German schools.

Teall credits his teachers at Ansbach High School for his success.

Many of them challenged him to go beyond the high school level and push himself to earn college credits.

These teachers recognized his goal, encouraged him to study harder, and believed he could do it.

As a member of the Ansbach Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, Teall won first place in both Accounting II and Virtual Business Challenge at the European Championships in March 2012 in Garmisch, Germany.

Teall’s graduation from Ansbach High School is June 7. He is the fourth sibling in his Family to graduate here.

His parents, Daniel and Sandra Teall, have both taught at the school for 10 years.

Future plans include more college—he wants to apply to the Ansbach Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) for a master’s degree in International Product and Service Management.

He plans to earn more credits in business to

round out his education and be prepared for graduate work.

Teall’s main splurge is on competitive ballroom and Latin dancing at a German “Tanzschule.”

Would he do it again?

“Yes, to get this far ahead, at my age, I would definitely do it all over again,” Teall said.

Job fair set for June 21

First Annual Adventure Weekend

Marc JarvisCommunity members from U.S. Army Garrisons Ansbach, Bamberg, Hohenfels, Vilseck and Wiesbaden gathered in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the first annual “Adventure Weekend” over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, May 25-28. Participants were able to participate in many different activities; to include, white water rafting, mountain biking, alpine hiking and rock climbing, lake canoe and kayaking, white water kayaking instruction and a family friendly river float trip.

German environmental lobbyist, fire fighters, the government forest marshal, biologists, a zoologist from Wildpark and an environmental management engineer.

Several Soldiers from the 1-77th Field Artillery unit were enlisted to escort the children to and from school, and toured with the groups of students from station to station.

Education at each station was further illuminated through hands-on applications: students constructed a miniature merry-go-round that was powered by the sun, molded pulp into a piece of paper that could be written on and handled adult deer antlers and furs.

Each year the DPW Environmental Division presents a different animal, and then details its life cycle, habitat and importance to human beings. This year they chose the hedgehog, which is uncommon in the United States. But during the fall in Germany, the hedgehog searches for a shelter to hibernate during the wintertime.

Children eagerly and with wide eyes listened to the speaker of each station. During times of questioning or needed volunteer demonstrators, almost all stretched their “spirit fingers” out to be called upon. When leaving the station, all children would harmoniously sound off a gracious “Thank you!” “We want to reach out to the children because I believe that children educate their parents,” Rueckert said.

Froehling added, “It’s much easier to educate kids. They are more interested and they are able to take in more. You educate a kid and this kid goes on living for another 70 or 80 years sharing the information he has learned now.”

The event has left a lasting impact on many of the students.

“When we don’t take care of the earth, we are hurting more than animals,” said Ladeem Bagosbah, a fourth grader. “We also hurt the water and plants. When I see trash on the ground, I won’t step over it. If I see trash in a creek or in the woods, I will pick it up so that it won’t hurt the animals.”

“My favorite part was putting out fires with the fire truck. We got sprayed a little,” nine-year-old Ladeem said.

The function took Froehling three months to organize, which was not too difficult to do, he said, when it’s been consistently and successfully running for so long.

Most of the challenge came from a limited workforce due to the upcoming closure of USAG Schweinfurt, Froehling said.

Eco-Friendly Tips

Recycling Tips

1. Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you’ll be happy when you don’t have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste).

2. Buy rechargeable batteries.

Energy-saving Tips

1. Adjust lighting levels. Higher light settings use more energy, so save energy by using dimmer controls, high/low switches, or three-way bulbs to adjust the level of light to exactly what you need.

2. Another fun energy-saving tip is to share rides to work, school, church and social activities. You’ll make new friends and save valuable fuel.

Water-saving Tips

1. When you clean your fish tank, use the ‘old’ nitrogen and phosphorous-rich water on your plants.

2. It’s best to water the roots and soil around plants rather than spraying the leaves and flowers.
