How Rich People Think

An Excerpt From

How Rich People Think by Steve Siebold

The average person believes the harder they work, the more money they’ll make. Their linear thinking equates labor and effort with financial success. This is why most people aren’t rich. They’re following an outdated model of success and are confounded when they reach middle age with little money to show for twenty years of hard work.

The rich know that creative thinking is the highest paid skill in the world. Independent, creative thinking is the most valuable asset anyone can acquire. So while the masses are trying to figure out how to put their kids through college and retire on

half of what they can barely exist on now, the great ones are building empires, living in abundance, and donating large sums to their favorite causes. This sets off a psychological domino effect, because once a person thinks and lives at this level of abundance, they know even greater levels of success are possible through the vehicle of creative thought.

Most of us were told as kids that if we paid attention in school, got good grades, and went to a respectable college or university, our success was virtually guaranteed. The reality is that few people who follow this formula ever get rich. They survive, and some become the most successful people in their families. But world-class wealth is rarely achieved by people who follow this model. The rich eventually figure out that training your mind to find solutions to difficult problems is the real secret to making money. The good news is that this is possible for anyone who conditions their mind to think this way, and then transforms thought into action.

Middle class believes money is earned through labor… World class believes money is earned through thought.

The secret is not in the mechanics of money but in the level of thinking that generates it.

Once you learn to embrace this, your earning potential is limitless.

A lot of people think that rich people are just lucky; that they stumble into their fortunes. But, actually, the way you think can have a great deal to do with the size of your bank account.

Many successful people have followed this model and transitioned from providing “labor for a salary” to the creative thought process of how to use the “labor” of others to generate income… They become business owners.

Having ownership in a business is the classic path to creating wealth. When you build a business you are building an asset that grows in value and can eventually be sold--hopefully for quite a bit of money. This wealth payoff to the owner is on top of the income received during the operation of the business. Owning a business involves taking more risk in the beginning, but the reward is that any wealth created through your efforts will accrue to you rather than to someone else (as it does when you have a job). This factor is very important to most people who choose to go the business-ownership route.

The basic trade-off is pretty simple. A job has more income certainty, (assuming you are able to keep your job), but owning a business has more wealth-creation potential and allows for greater control and independence. Each person needs to evaluate the balance between these factors and determine which avenue works best for him or her.

Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.” Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Perhaps you have always dreamed about being self-employed?

So, if self-employment...business ownership is your aspiration...are you going to stand on the sideline and watch opportunity pass you by, or take positive steps towards realizing your dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners?

What’s Your Wish?

The White Envelope It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband hated Christmas---oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the “craziness” of Christmas – where he had a tendency to sit back and do WAY too much thinking, about his future, his family, what he wanted to be when he grew up, so to say. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to do something for him. The inspiration came in an unusual way – I was watching a magician on television doing a “trick” when it struck me… I asked him to write down for me, every New Year’s Day, what he wanted from his life. It didn’t matter what he put down – this was for him. And I didn’t want to see it. Then, every Thanksgiving weekend, when we put up the Christmas tree, I’d ask him to open it and see what it said. And then I’d ask him, “Are you closer to reaching it? If not, what can I do to help?” After a couple of years of this, my husband turned to me and said, “Yes, you can help. You see – I want to own my own business. I’ve always realized I could build equity for our family better this way – plus get away from the corporate nonsense I deal with every day. But if we do this, we’re going to have to tighten our belts in the short-term. Are you ready to help?” I nearly keeled over from shock. I had become accustomed to our nice little life – and knowing my husband was able to make a good salary and support our family well. I worked as well, but was also busy with the kids, so we depended largely on his salary. “What are you considering?” I asked, trying to sound supportive. “Well, I’m looking at buying a franchise,” he said. “I’ve been working with a franchise consultant, and he has helped me understand my skills and what franchise companies would be right for me. I’m in the process of investigating several right now – and one, in particular, is looking like a really good fit for us.” “Oh. C…,” I mumbled, and then quickly began thinking of ways I could submarine this radical thinking that was going to destroy the security of our family. “Have you spoken with your Dad about this?” “Yes, I have,” my husband said, “and he asked me if I had the ‘stuff’ to make it work?” “Well, do you?, “ I asked. “I don’t know,” my husband replied, “but I DO know that if I don’t see this through, I’ll never be happy, because I will have never seen through what I thought I could do with myself in life.” “Well, obviously this is important to you.” I offered. “Let’s share it with family when they’re here for the holidays – and see what they have to say,” hoping in my heart they’d help me out on this issue. “We can do that,” he said, “but I don’t need another WIPE-OUT. You know, WELL-INTENTIONED PERSONS OFFERING UNINFORMED THOUGHTS? My Dad has been doing that to me my whole life. It took me years to understand that he didn’t mean me harm, but that he wished for my safety, and that suggesting I avoid risk was his way of doing it.” “I’ve already spoken with a lot of people,” he went on to say. “And I’ve learned that once you begin to talk about your desires to own your own business, you will get all sorts of comments back that don’t always reflect an understanding of who you really are, and certainly don’t reflect a knowledge of the

business you are investigating. Be it your father, or your “know-it-all” sister-in-law, or your neighbor, or your co-worker. They all seem to have an opinion. I have learned I needed to understand two things. First, as I said, I’ve learned that my loved ones have my “safety” at heart – not my “success” – so they are hardly in the position to advise me to do something that would put me or my family at any risk at all. Secondly, many can make a comment that may appear to have my best interest at heart, but that person doesn’t have the details I have in investigating a business. I guess I’ve learned this is something I simply have to do on my own. Wow, I thought. He’s got me pegged. “OK, then what can I do here?” “Join me in this investigation process,” he requested. “Work with me to learn about these businesses. And then we can decide together – if this one particular business isn’t right, it won’t change how I feel. I still want to do this.” Well, we did exactly what he asked me to…and 7 years ago, we purchased a franchise business together. It has met his personal fulfillment needs – and neither of us has ever regretted a minute. But why still the “white envelope,” you say? Do I still have him fill it out every year? “No, I don’t. These days it is no more than an empty envelope. But it’s a constant reminder to me to that I almost “blew it. That I was thinking about what I thought was right for me, not for my husband, or for our family. And that reminder is the best message I can receive every holiday”.

“FEATURED” Franchises for January

There are thousands of franchise / business opportunities available today and cover just about everything from advertising to food services, home repair to laundry / dry cleaning, maid services to printing / copy services, real estate to weight control…from small to large and startups to nationally recognized. These concepts have various investment ranges and include many different industry categories. And, since the company knows the business, they aren’t looking for owners with industry experience. They want prospective owners who possess a strong work ethic, customer service orientation, business and

management skills, not technical expertise. If you are interested in additional information, company website, and / or have any questions regarding any of the concepts below, please call Larry Powell at 210-479-2491, if outside San Antonio, toll-free 1-888-479-2491, or send an email to [email protected] with your name, phone number and a day(s) / time(s) to call you.

The 10 Types of Franchises to Watch in 2015

ENTREPRENEUR December 30, 2014

Every year we gaze into the future and try to pick 10 franchise categories that will make the biggest splash in the coming 12 months. For 2015, we’ve chosen a mix of established categories that are being invigorated by new

ideas, sophomore industries that are just starting to show their strength and promising but unproven concepts. No matter what type of franchise you’re interested in pursuing, always do your research before investing.

Children’s Enrichment - Children's sports, fitness, art and music programs continue to perform well, but

STEM is the big word in the enrichment world. In the past few years, several fast-growing franchises have

focused on making science, technology, engineering and math fun for kids.

E-Cigarettes - With close to 6 million adults now using e-cigarettes, it's no surprise that stores have started to franchise. But legislators scrambling to catch up with the trend by imposing new regulations could challenge the fledgling industry's growth.

Fitness - You may hate going to the gym, but in the franchise world, there's nothing but love for the fitness category. Large gym franchises are still going strong, while smaller concepts are gaining muscle by offering niche options, like kickboxing, Pilates, dance and in-home training.

Paint-and-Sip Studios - First added to our trends list last year, this entertainment concept is still relatively new but already proving itself, with more competitors making an appearance and existing companies experiencing impressive growth

Pizza - Traditional delivery-focused pizza franchises abound, but it's fast-casual, build-your-own joints using an assembly-line format that are bringing renewed popularity to the sector.

Potatoes - Is the humble spud ready to go from side dish to starring role? A handful of new franchises are betting on it by offering menus featuring baked potatoes, fries, tater tots, chips and nothing else.

Property Management - In the wake of the housing market crash of 2008, the number of rental properties rose--and so did the need for people to manage those properties. The success of the franchises that stepped up to fill that need has attracted a healthy group of new competitors.

Senior Care - Senior home care has become one of the mainstays of franchising, but the field continues to evolve. New companies are competing with their more established counterparts by introducing additional services like patient advocacy and assisted-living placement.

Spa Services - In just over a decade, the massage business has become one of franchising's most competitive areas. Other spa and beauty services, like waxing, threading and spray tanning, are following its lead to reach more customers through franchising.

Vending - Vending has long been a popular avenue for those looking to start their own business, yet it has rarely been franchised--until recently. The success of these new ventures is likely to attract even more vending companies to the franchise model in the future.

1. Children’s Enrichment…This franchise provides a hands-on enrichment program that began in 2008 when we observed a lack of science enrichment programs available at the preschool and early elementary school age level. Franchise teaches S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. (Science. Technology. Engineering. (Art). Math.) to children in local education centers near the franchisee's home base. Allows children to extrapolate the concepts from what we do and apply them to other life learning activities. Sure, kids get to blow bubbles in one of our lessons, but they also learn new vocabulary such as sphere, consistency and molecules AND learn the scientific method and how it can be applied to everyday questions that they have about bubbles! All while having fun and maybe getting a little messy.

. Custom Winery & Wine Bar… Unique concept. This franchise combines winemaking and the winery 5

experience with the accessibility of the wine bar model. Winery without the vineyard. Purchase high quality grape must (crushed grapes) from vineyards around the world. We produce most of the wines at a central production facility. The retail locations order finished wine from our central production facility. There is limited winemaking at the franchise locations. The hub-and-spoke model minimizes the labor and time that our franchisees spend making the wine they sell by the bottle or by the glass. This model allows our franchisees to get open for business within six months or less.

Page 9: Franchise Quest LIBRARY….s3.amazonaws.com/.../FranchiseQuestLibraryJan2015.pdf · Franchise Agreement – It documents the legal relationship of obligations between franchisor and

Franchise Quest LIBRARY….January 2015

9

The other benefit of our model that helps you be in business for yourself, not by yourself, is that you spend more time doing what our franchisees love to do: Run the winery and mingle with guests. By producing the wine at our central production facility, you spend more time with your customers and being a part of the operations in the front of the winery, not in the back. Combines the best of a winery and wine bar:

o Wine Tasting o Wine by the glass o Wine by the bottle o Wine classes o Wine Club o Bistro style appetizers & desserts o Custom labeling on demand o Customers make their own wine o Wholesale opportunities

We are proudly introducing winemaking to urban areas across America. Make 50-60 different types of wine…something for every palate. Guests come in to taste and purchase wines, get involved in creating their own personal vintage, or make a custom label. Locations are designed to provide a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy sipping a glass of wine while socializing with friends. Franchise also provides additional revenue streams through off-premise sales of bottled wines, as well as wholesale opportunities. Produce 50-60 different wines using grapes grown in California, France, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Spain and other locales. Many people have never discovered a wine they really enjoy, so they created a lineup of wines that are easy to drink for the novice consumer and introduce them to the pleasure of wine. Some of these include a Blackberry Merlot, Cranberry Chianti and Green Apple Gewurztraminer. Their newest additions include cocktails that are based on wine, but taste just like the real thing. Some specialty creations are a Cosmopolitan, Long Island Ice Tea, and even a Lemon-Lime Margarita. In addition, we also provide an integrated support program to improve your sales, marketing (including social media and the internet) as well as financial management to help you run your store profitably. Wine is a growth industry in any economic environment. The wine industry is growing by 10% annually. Wine consumption has grown every year for the past 10 years. The company is seeking franchisees who want to be in the wine business. The wine business is expanding is the United States. In fact, in 2010, the U.S. surpassed France as the largest consumer of wine in the world. This franchise concept is unique and combines the features of both a winery and upscale wine bar, plus offers light appetizers, desserts, and specialty beverages (flavored waters and tea). A typical menu would include Panini sandwiches, fruit and cheese platters, as well as some dessert items. A local distributor is contracted with to provide freshly prepared pre-made food items, so no kitchen is required and little preparation is needed prior to serving. Offering a light food menu increases revenue and many guests will linger if food is readily available. We are initially focused on California and Arizona to enable us to build a regional brand as well as ship finished wine at cost-effective rates. In other states, we offer a Winery Affiliate program. We retain all of the features described previously; however, we will allow our Affiliates to use their own approved name for their winery. The most significant difference is that after purchasing their initial inventory from our central production facility, our Winery Affiliates would produce most of their own wine versus buying from our central production facility. Passive Ownership Allowed.

Note: We CANNOT sell our winery concept in the following states due to laws requiring us to use locally grown grapes to make our wines: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota,
