WE HAVE JUST CELEBRATED THE EASTER FESTIVITIES, NOW WHAT?

Like everywhere else in the Catholic Church, I believe Easter was a great celebration here at our own St. Andrew the Apostle Parish for all of us. I have received a lot of positive feedback from many of you confirming this. On a purely human level and as your pastor, I was edified to see our scheduled Masses all well attended and even overflowing both in the Church and in the tent. As I made the remark at one of the Masses, I desire to see our Church always packed to capacity at all times not just so as to feel good, but because what we come to celebrate is an event of great magnitude – the Love of our God manifested visibly in our Lord Jesus Christ born a human being like us, suffered, died, was buried and rose from the dead! It is His resurrection which we are celebrating during this season and which gives all of us hope even in suffering and death that the end result will be eternal life for us if we believe and remain faithful to Him. Because, He is truly raised, all of us must have a reason to look forward to our own joyful and glorious resurrection in eternity.

It is the recognition of the eternal nature of what we celebrate each time we come to Holy Mass which should always attract us over and above the mundane attractions we are drawn to constantly. This is, because it is here that we encounter the risen Lord; body, soul, and divinity. This is what we have just successfully celebrated at the Easter Festivities; now what? Now is the time to keep the fire of the Lord’s resurrection burning in our own hearts and in our great parish, and also invite our friends and loved ones to join in this eternal celebration just as you probably did on Easter. Let us always keep in mind that the Lord keeps on manifesting His unfathomable love and mercy for us at all times- even at our own time.

This weekend for instance, we celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy Sunday as such a manifestation of God’s love for us. The message of Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us - all of us - without exception. And, He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. This is what we should all take advantage of, especially during this extraordinary year of mercy.

The message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy that we celebrate today is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread. In summary, the message asks us to: •Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. •Be Merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us including especially those we find difficult to forgive. •Completely Trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent on our trust and confidence in His son.

I therefore, ask all of you to spend some time to learn more about the mercy of our God, learn to trust in Jesus, and live your life and be merciful to others, as Christ is merciful to you. This is how we can continue to celebrate the joy of the resurrection of our Lord and His mercy in a more practical and meaningful way.

In Christ,

Fr. Robert

LiturgyWeekly Reflection on the Readings

April 8, 2018Divine Mercy Sunday

Call to Prayer: We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.First Reading: Acts 4:32-35Second Reading: 1 John 5:1-6Gospel: John 20:19-31On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Divine Mercy Cenacle 2nd Tuesday of the month 7:00pm in Room B The group explores the Divine Mercy Message

through study of St. Faustina’s Diary, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Scripture and Prayer.

All are invited.

Our Lady of Fatima (Part 33) The Angel of Peace appeared in 1916 to the three Fatima children, a year prior to Our Lady appearing. The first thing he did was to teach them this prayer: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! And I ask pardon for all those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You. What the Angel of Peace essentially taught them, and us, is the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love---the paramount virtues to living our lives well on earth, so that we can be with God in Heaven. But the angel added something to the three theological virtues---adoration of God. By adding this element, he is teaching us the proper disposition toward God. We are called, first and foremost, to adore Him---because if we don’t spend time in prayer and adoration of God, it’s difficult to grow in the virtues of faith, hope and love. Certainly the children, and most Catholics at the time of the Fatima apparitions, would have practiced Eucharistic Adoration as a way of honoring the Lord. But 100 years later, we have nearly lost this sense of adoring God. In fact, many Catholics today may not even know about Eucharistic Adoration---though this practice has made something of a comeback in the last two decades. Other than the moment of reception of Holy Communion itself, there is no other time or place where we are closer to God than Eucharistic Adoration. It is there where He most powerfully and most clearly speaks to our hearts. If you are unsure about a life decision, such as a vocation or career choice, struggling with your marriage or with one of your children, go to Adoration. We need periods of silence with the Lord. If we don’t have silence in our lives, before God, how do we know what He wants to say to us? How will we know His will for our lives? And if we don’t know God’s will for our lives, how will we do His will? This message from the Angel of Peace is a good reminder to us as we consider these heavenly visits at Fatima. It’s a reminder that we need to spend time in silence before God, preferably in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, so that we can grow in the virtues that are necessary to live according to His will for each of our lives. After each time the Angel of Peace and Our Lady appeared to the three children, the children would spend many hours in Adoration……especially Francisco. He wanted to spend time with the “hidden Jesus” in the Blessed Sacrament, consoling Him for all the sins committed against His Sacred Heart. In fact, we read in Lucia’s diary that Francisco would even skip school so that he could spend all day in Adoration. Let’s take a cue from Francisco and adore the Lord. Let’s learn from his contemplative nature by turning away from the noise and busyness of our lives, and turning instead toward God. (an excerpt from the Book: Fatima a Pilgrimage with Mary by Fr. Joseph Roesch, MIC, page 23)Reflection: Is Adoration a part of my spiritual life? If so, how is my life enriched? If not, will I consider giving some time each week to sit with the Lord?
