2nd Sunday of Easter (Cycle C) Divine Mercy Sunday

A Sunday Reflection Our God is a God of mercy who does not cease to search for the

sinner so that he may repent and live. In the gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus quotes from the prophet Hosea “It is mercy I desire, not sacrifice” (Hos 6:6). And in the century that saw the most violent and ruthless wars and annihilation, he appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska to bid us come to his mercy. Through her Jesus tells us of his desire to be a “refuge and shelter for all souls”, saying: “I pour out an ocean of mercy on those souls who approach the fountain of my mercy” (Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska, 699).

In response to the Lord’s request to St. Faustina, Pope St. John

Paul II instituted this Sunday as Divine Mercy Sunday. Today, when we hear Thomas proclaim Jesus “My Lord and my God”, let us approach with confidence this fountain of mercy that we may find in him all grace and mercy.

The Blesseds / Los Beatos BLESSED MARIANO MULLERAT (1897-1936) —

Spanish doctor who also served as the mayor of Arbeca in the region of Catalonia, from 1924 until 1930. Mullerat studied medicine in Barcelona and settled in Arbeca with his wife. As a doctor, he provided free care for the poor and would even help them with their material needs. If the family was very poor, he would leave money under the sick person’s pillow.

At the start of the Spanish civil war, in July, 1936, it was rumored in the town that he would be killed. At first he planned to leave the town, but thinking that his patients would be left unattended, he decided against it.

On August 13, 1936 militiamen came to his home and placed him into a truck alongside five others to be killed. On the way, a woman approached asking in tears if the doctor could be freed so he could treat her son who was ill at home. The truck stopped; he wrote her a prescription for her son and handed it to her. On the way to where they were killed at the side of the road, he encouraged the others to have courage and faith in God asking that their executioners be forgiven. His final words: "Father, into Your hands, I commend my spirit". Mariano Mullerat was beatified in March of this year.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit!

Christ is alive! He is our hope, and in a wonderful way he brings youth to our world, and everything he

touches becomes young, new, full of life. The very first words, then, that I would like to say to every young

Christian are these: Christ is alive and he wants you to be alive!

He is in you, he is with you and he never abandons you. However far you may wander, he is always there,

the Risen One. He calls you and he waits for you to return to him and start over again. When you feel you are growing old

out of sorrow, resentment or fear, doubt or failure, he will always be there to restore your strength and your hope.

Indulgences Attached to Divine Mercy Devotions [W]ith provident pastoral sensitivity and in order to impress deeply on the souls of the faithful these precepts and teachings of the Christian faith, the Supreme Pontiff, John Paul II,.. has willed that the Second Sunday of Easter be dedicated to recalling with special devotion these gifts of grace and gave this Sunday the name, "Divine Mercy Sunday"

To ensure that the faithful would observe this day with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence…,granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. “Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!").

Decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary, June 29, 2002
