“We preach this, not because our discourse about the devil is sweet to us, but because the doctrine about him is full of security for you”

Saint John Chrysostom

Page 3: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

As a Catholic Nation, why are we open to demonic harassments?

Page 4: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

As a Catholic Nation, why are we not becoming holy and there is misery around us?

“Some of you might say: ‘But Father, how old fashioned you are to speak about the devil in the 21st century!’ But look out because the devil is present! The devil is here… even in the 21st century! …We must learn from the Gospel how to fight against Satan.”

Pope Francis

Saturday 12 April 2014

“The kingdom of heaven is

at hand! Cure the sick, raise

the dead, cleanse the lepers,

cast out devils.” Mt 10: 8

“And these signs shall attend those who believe: in my name they shall cast out

devils.” Mk 16:17

“Then having summoned the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all the devils and to cure diseases” Lk 9: 1-2

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and he went about doing good and healing all who were in the power of the devil” Acts 10:38

The Ministry of Liberation

Page 7: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

In a lecture given on October 24, 1995 the future Pope Benedict stated that “preaching is connected with the “casting out of devils” (1:39): …preaching takes shape in no bright,

happy world, but

in a world tyrannized

by demons, into which

it intervenes so as to

liberate”.

Page 8: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

And in his book, Jesus of

Nazareth, the Pope tells us that

“The first task is preaching: to

give people the light of the word,

the message of Jesus … because

the world is ruled by the powers

of evil, this preaching is at the

same time a struggle with those

powers”.

Demonic Strongholds can cause the following;- Extraordinary Demonic Attack of Possession, Oppression, Obsession and Infestation

- Blockages to God’s blessings, guidance, protection and graces

- Outbreak of paranormal and psychic phenomena

- Sufferings that are not crosses anymore; they are burdensome, make us miserable; they are not life-giving

- Temptations that very strong and persistent -Varied and unrelenting harassments and blocks to the spiritual life-Uncaused anger, sadness and fears -Series of “bad luck” and freak accidents-Obstinacy in sin

- Non commensurate results to energy expended in spiritual endeavors and programs

Page 11: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

St. Pope John Paul II said, “The devil

is still alive and active in the world.“

Page 12: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Pope Francis

"We must always remain vigilant, on guard against deception, against the seduction of evil ", because the devil, against whom Jesus truly fought and won, " always tries to come back," to "take possession of us. "

Page 13: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“This matter of the devil and of the influence he can exert on individuals as well as on communities, entire societies or events, is a very important chapter of Catholic doctrine which should be studied again, although it is given little attention today”.

- Pope Paul VI

Notes from the Vatican

Page 15: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Fr. Pedro Barrajon, LC- When Christianity is forgotten, the vacuum is

filled with the occult (more than rationalism)

Msgr. Luigi Negri - The Church betrays Itself when It denies Its

power of exorcism which is a work of charity

- The devil has created a dominant culture that brings about individual possession

Page 16: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Dr. Carlo Climati -In today’s society, there are more young people into the occult and Satanism - Occult practitioners take advantage of the sufferings of other people; when they are vulnerable

Page 17: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Fr. Francesco Bamonte, ICMS - In today’s culture, we see the greatest

esotericism / occultism, widespread magical practices, Divination, spiritism, Satanic sects

- Occult practices are the major causes of possession

- Uncertainty in life and loss of Faith

makes person turn to occult and

even Satanism - We must exhort faithful not to go

to magical practitioners

Page 18: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

- Some causes of possession are those who participate in spiritism, mediumship, have amulets and are victims of curses (due to a third party)

Fr. Gabriele Nanni - Demons take many forms of the

deceased- There is an increase of victims of

the devil with fewer priests and

even fewer exorcists

Page 19: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

-Studies have shown that in Italy (15-18 years old);

= 76% are attracted to the occult

= 78% have contact with satanism (44% through music)

Fr. Rene Laurentin -Children are victims of satanic rituals-In Africa, 20 years ago,

there were no exorcists and

there was the fear of the witches,

today with the coming of exorcists,

they have removed this fear

US ReportThe Rev. David Fleming … is one of 50 U.S. priests recently chosen to train in the rite of exorcism.

It is the church’s first effort in the United States to coordinate a “comprehensive and systematic formation process for this particular ministry,” Fleming told the Catholic Mirror, Des Moines’ diocesan newspaper.

Page 21: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

It is a big moment for exorcists. Dioceses in Italy and Spain are also increasing their ranks because of an “unprecedented rise” in demonic possession, Madrid Archbishop Antonio Maria Rouco said last year, after nominating eight priests to undergo training to rid people of their demons.

Church leaders attribute the rise in possessions to people who are dabbling in the occult: practicing witchcraft, visiting a psychic, even playing with a Ouija board.

Mexico Report

To some it may seem extraordinary, but priests say the country is under attack by Satan, and that more exorcists are needed to fight him.

"We believe that behind all these big and structural evils there is a dark agent and his name is The Demon. That is why the Lord wants to have here a ministry of exorcism and liberation, for the fight against the Devil," says Father Carlos Triana, a priest, and an exorcist, in Mexico City.

Page 23: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Mexico's exorcists say there is unprecedented demand for their services. Some are even not taking new cases, as they are having to exorcise demons almost every day. "This didn't happen before", says Father Francisco Bautista, another exorcist in Mexico City.

Page 24: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Who are exorcists? The instructions from the Roman Ritual point out that an exorcist is someone who is expressly and particularly authorized by the Ordinary (bishop) to perform an exorcism.

According to Canon Law Canon 1172 no.1, “no one can legitimately perform exorcisms over the possessed unless he has obtained special and express permission from the local ordinary.”

Exorcists use the Roman Ritual

of Exorcism

Page 25: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Exorcism, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (no. 1673) is “when the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the Name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and be withdrawn from his dominion.”

Page 26: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Exorcist Who are exorcists? “The exorcist is an explicit symbol of the battle between the Church and the devil”

Page 27: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Deliverance Minister Who are deliverance ministers? They may be priests, religious or lay persons with the charism of deliverance.

They use deliverance prayers (Minor exorcisms and Prayers of liberation and not the Roman Ritual of Exorcism) to expel evil spirits from the demonically obsessed and oppressed.

Page 28: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

St. Alphonsus Liguori (17th century) the noted moral theologian and Doctor of the Church said that “private exorcism is permissible to all Christians; solemn exorcism is permissible only to ministers who are appointed to it.”

Animism / Paganism

Page 32: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Foundational beliefs

Pantheism - The universe is God; hence nature has powers which can be used for good or bad.

Man does not worship and serve the powers of nature as ends in themselves, he has an ulterior motive; the desire to control it.

Page 33: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Power is needed to make rain, give good crops, secure employment, heal diseases, guarantee fertility.

Page 34: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Man prays, implores and sacrifices not out of devotion but to manipulate the spirit world.

Sacrifices and offerings are not made to expiate sin but to maintain filial relations with the spirit world. There is no sin, only taboo

Page 35: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Polytheistic - Animists believe in a plurality of gods, both co-equal or in hierarchy. These gods are believed to have specific spheres of control. There is belief in a supreme deity but one who is uninvolved (deism) or unconcerned with man’s welfare so man seeks out lesser powers and gods to meet their desires.

Page 36: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Animism is therefore pantheistic, power and fear based, man-centered, polytheistic and

deistic.

Page 37: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

The Church and Paganism Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God. 1 John 4:1

The Breaking of the First Commandant

“I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before Me”

Page 39: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

In the Old Testament, Paganism was Idolatry

In the New Testament world, Paganism was Demonic

“They sacrifice their sons and their daughters to devils, to the idols of Canaan”

Ps. 105:37.

Page 40: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“They sacrifice to devils and not to God, to gods whom they know not”

Deut. 32:17

Page 41: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“So what am I saying? That meat sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything? No, I mean that what they sacrifice, [they sacrifice] to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to become participants with demons.”

St.Paul

Page 42: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“To sacrifice to an idol is not only an act of weakness, but an act of adoration of the devil, a blasphemy against Christ, an act deserving damnation.”

St. Justin the Martyr

“The pagan marvels were the work of demons, in the arrogance of their foul pride which made them ambitious to be the gods of the pagans”

St. Augustine

Page 43: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

The fundamental cause for the worship of idols “must be sought in the devils, who cause men to adore them under the form of idols, therein working certain things which excited their wonder and admiration.”

St Thomas Aquinas

Page 44: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Occult PowersThe Power in

Paganism

Page 45: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Occultism is the theory and practice invoking superhuman, but not divine, powers in order to obtain results that are beyond the capacity of mere nature

Page 46: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Occult Powers and God “When you

come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you, must not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of these nations. No one shall be found among you who makes a Son or daughter pass through fire, or who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or sorcerer, or one who casts spells, or who consults ghosts or spirits, or who seeks oracles from the dead.

Page 47: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

For whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord; it is because of such abhorrent practices that the Lord your God is driving them out before you.”

Deut 18: 9-12

Page 48: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

"Many persons of both sexes unmindful of their own salvation and straying from the Catholic Faith, have abandoned themselves to devils, incubi and succubi, and by their incantations, spells, conjurations, and other accured charms and crafts … are a cause of scandal and danger to very many”Papal Bull of Pope Innocent VIII against Witchcraft

Page 49: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have supernatural power over others – even if this were for the sake of restoring their health – are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion.”

CCC 2117

Page 50: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead, or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future.

Page 51: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Consulting Horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums, all conceal a desire for power over time, history and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers.

Page 52: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.”

CCC 2116

Folk Catholicism  Inculturation is important in evangelization but the challenge here is that we must be very careful in order that we do not inculturate elements of our animistic / occult idolatrous past. Then we fall into Syncretism. What is inculturated are our traditional Filipino values.

Page 54: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“Those who, in the name of inculturation, run into syncretism”

The “need for constant vigilance against all possible forms of syncretism”

“Syncretism is harmful” St. Pope John Paul II

“Interreligious dialogue when badly understood leads to muddled thinking or to syncretism”Pope Benedict XVI

Page 55: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“The correct integration of the authentic values of cultures into the Christian faith. It liberates from occultism and vanquishes evil spirits, for it is moved by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Nature Spirits or elementals.

–Some examples are fairies, elves, dwarves, mermaids, gnomes, pygmies, satyrs, salamanders (balls of light), sylphs (air fairies), undines (water fairies) , nymphs,, etc.

–In the Philippines they are known as diwata, gigante, tikbalang, dwende, nuno sa punso, siokoy, sirena, tiyanak and the like.

Page 63: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

According to Fr. Gabriele Amorth, it is wrong to “accept the prevalent opinion that there are spiritual beings that are not mentioned in the Bible. These are the invention of spiritists, of followers of the occult, of those who espouse reincarnation, or of those who believe in ‘wandering souls.’ there are no good spirits other than angels; there are no evil spirits other than demons.”

Page 64: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“A demon can also deceive men by some action from without. By his natural powers he can fashion from the air a body of almost any form and shape, and then assume it and appear visibly therein; he can clothe or vest himself with material substances and thus appear in sensible form”

St. Thomas Aquinas

Page 65: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

Wandering Souls

Is there such a thing as “wandering souls”; that is, souls who do not know that they are dead and must be helped by psychics to go into the light in order to leave this world and enter a higher plane of existence?

Page 66: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

The teaching of the Church is very clear; “The New Testament … repeatedly affirms that each will be rewarded immediately after death in accordance with his works and faith” (CCC. 1021) and again “Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment”. (CCC. 1022)

Page 67: Fr. jocis syquia catechesis on delivernce and exorcism

“(Evil) spirits are deceivers, not by nature, but by malice. They make themselves gods and souls of the departed, but they do not make themselves devils, for they really are so.”

- St. Augustine - “City of God;”
