Ryan M. Fleming, CFP® President’s Message

Dear Fellow Members,

Our Winter Symposium was fantastic, despite the weather and technical challenges. Swirling winds and a snowstorm

caused an 8-car pileup on the Toll Road, but that didn’t stop our members from showing up at 6 a.m. for Ethics or 8

a.m. for the regular program. About 30% of our members attended and were treated to a fantastic day of learning,

networking, and CE. Friday’s event, run by our outgoing chairman, Eric Hess, CFP®, was the best attended FPA NCA

event in more than 8 years.

A special thanks once again to our sponsors, without whom this chapter wouldn’t run the same. There are great partners

at every level of association – Preferred, Premier, Gold, and Silver. They continually support our chapter and make

events like the Winter Symposium affordable for groups like ours. Most importantly, they provide tremendous

speakers. Dennis Moseley-Williams, whose time was donated by Brad Pheeney of Putnam, had our cynical group of

advisors laughing at 5p on Friday evening after some had been there for 11 hours at that point. Preferred sponsor Bob

Ciullo of Charles Schwab contributed Kathy Jones for an engaging fixed income discussion, and Premier sponsor Jeff

Kulik of Fidelity convinced Fidelity managing director Bruce Johnstone to give his thoughts on the market and the

world. They really are partners in our efforts to learn, growth, flourish, and contribute.

If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, you don’t know what you’re missing. Listening to conversations around the

lunch tables and seeing advisors interact is the thing that inspires me about FPA. Don’t get me wrong – I love our

speakers and programs; but the cross-practice idea sharing and ad hoc mentorship I see every single meeting is

amazing. There are always opportunities to meet new advisors with new ideas, old advisors with new ideas, or old

advisors with old ideas that just work. Some of the best practices in our region were built on the collegiality fostered at

FPA lunch-and-learns. In fact, one practice was just formed as a result of relationships formed at FPA.

Continued from Page One

As we continue our push for more interaction and more integration with FPA’s national NexGen group

through board member and FPA liaison Laurie Belew, your presence as experienced advisors and successful

business people is critical at events like our March NexGen Happy Hour or our chapter’s Career Day (more

on this in a future issue). Whether it’s a formal mentorship or just a friendship formed over lunch chatter, the

bonds formed at FPA are what keep our industry moving toward the coveted designation as a profession by

those outside of our practices. I remember, more than a dozen years ago, studying for the CFP® certification

exam while waiting for my car rental, and chapter member Wayne Zussman, CFP®, sitting in the same rental

office, saw my books, struck up a conversation, and sought me out at future FPA lunches. It made a world of

difference for me as a newer member and just made it more comfortable to go to meetings every month. This

is part of your responsibility to grow our next generation of advisors.

On February 28, 2013, at Bethesda Country Club, we have a Media Training Program. In this presentation,

Scott Peterson, our Communications and PR Director will explain key components in working with the

media, as well as the new media relations of social networking. Remember that Media Training is required to

be a member of our Media Response Team. And, yes, you do have to go through it every year unless you are

a Past President of our chapter. In 2012, our chapter received more than 500 media inquiries and speaker

requests. After our Media Training Program, our Luncheon Program’s featured speaker is Jonathan Salter,

PhD, CFP®, and AIFA®, who will discuss recent Journal of Financial Planning research co-authored by Dr.

Salter, industry veteran Harold Evensky, and Shaun Pfeiffer regarding the use of standby reverse mortgage

lines of credit as supplemental income for a diverse set of retirees. This is not your father’s reverse mortgage

presentation and can find application in even the most sophisticated planning practices. You need to learn

more about this to better serve your clients.

If there is a particular topic or speaker that you would like to hear at our chapter, please email our Program

Committee chairs, Kathleen Sindell and Bryan Beatty.

Stay engaged. Please encourage your friends, colleagues, and the newer members of your firm, to participate

in our chapter so that they can benefit from our exceptional programs and resources. And don’t hesitate to let

us know how we can enhance your FPA NCA membership experience.

Best regards,

Ryan M. Fleming, CFP®

FPA NCA PRESENTS:

February 28, 2013, Bethesda Country Club, Bethesda, MD

11AM – 2PM Luncheon

Standby Reverse Mortgages:

A Risk Management Tool for Retirement Distributions

The objective of the session is to discuss recent research published in the Journal of Financial Planning by John Salter, Harold

Evensky, and Shaun Pfeiffer. The presentation discusses the use of reverse mortgages as a cash and investment management

tool. Based on academic research conducted by the presenter, the use of a HECM Saver reverse mortgage line of credit to

supplement income needs based on deviations of a client’s expected retirement wealth glidepath was analyzed in terms of

increasing portfolio longevity and ability to meet goals. Presentation will discuss the reverse mortgage product, this

investment and cash management strategy using the product, and results of the research.

The idea behind the study was to investigate mitigating the risk of reverse dollar cost averaging in retirement distributions by

borrowing from a reverse mortgage line of credit when the portfolio is down relative to a capital needs analysis to meet goals,

then paying the line of credit off when the portfolio rises. With the projections of low returns with high volatility, these issues

are indeed timely.

The proposed session discusses a use of reverse mortgages in mainstream financial planning and investment management, as

well as other potential uses of the product. This idea challenges the view of reverse mortgages from a tool of last resort.

Speaker: John R. Salter, PhD, CFP®, AIFA®

John is an Associate Professor of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University. He teaches in the areas of retirement

planning, investment management, and financial planning capstone, and his research interest is in the area of retirement

planning and income management. John is also a Vice-President and Wealth Manager at Evensky & Katz Wealth

Management in Coral Gables, Florida and Lubbock, Texas. He is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner and an

Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst.

FPA NCA Communities of Learning FPA Connect, FPA’s new social platform allows members to share best practices and expertise. FPA NCA recognizes

that some members may be interested in study groups or “communities of learning” to further develop their financial

planning expertise in different topic areas. FPA NCA would like to encourage anyone who is interested in either

facilitating or joining a community of learning to email Rita Cheng at [email protected]. Some

suggested communities of learning are divorce planning, special needs planning, planning for same sex couples, just

to name a few. We are certainly open to additional suggestions and ideas.

TAXATION INTERVIEW PROGRAM

Georgetown University Law Center (Georgetown Law) is again partnering with New York University School of Law

(NYU Law) to sponsor this year’s Taxation Interview Program (TIP). TIP enables private and public sector employers to

interview, on one day (March 1, 2013) and in one place (Embassy Suites Hotel, Washington, D.C.), current LL.M. in

Taxation students from Georgetown Law and NYU Law. Georgetown Law students pursuing a Certificate in Estate

Planning, together with an LL.M. in Taxation or separately, are eligible to participate in TIP.

Since 2001, TIP has been the nation’s flagship program for the recruitment of graduate tax students. In past years, top

law firms, government agencies, corporations, and major accounting firms from across the country have participated in

the program. Employers can pre-screen candidates for interviews, and they can also participate in TIP through a resume

collection option.

Georgetown Law cordially invites you and your organization to participate in TIP 2013. If you are not involved in hiring

at your organization, please feel free to pass this message along. For further information about TIP, please view the TIP

brochure [http://www.law.georgetown.edu/academics/academic-programs/graduate-

programs/careers/recruitment/taxation-interview-program/upload/tip-brochure-2013.pdf] and visit the TIP website

interview-program/index.cfm]. Employer registration is available online and will remain open until Jan. 28, 2013.

A New Member Benefit -Get Published!

The Financial Planning Association, National Capital Area (FPA NCA) welcomes original, advanced papers on any aspect

of financial planning, whether research-based or conceptual in nature. For an article to qualify for submission the author

must be an FPA NCA member. Members are limited to one published article per year. Article submission guidelines follow

and are based on the FPA National Web site procedures located at www.fpanet.org. (FPA NCA Sponsor Partners may also

submit articles for our Newsletter, to be reviewed under Sponsorship Guidelines.)

Composition Approach

Audience

Keep our readers—primarily experienced financial planning professionals—in mind as you write. Provide timely, practical

material that applies to, or will directly benefit, financial planners in their work. Take into account that your article is not an

advertisement for your firm or services. Assume the reader has a fundamental but not esoteric knowledge of the financial

services industry.

Style

Your writing style should be easy to read and follow, yet professional. Thoughts and concepts should be clearly presented

and easy to comprehend. Examples that illustrate key points are encouraged.

Organization

Stay focused on guiding the reader through the paper. State early its purpose, the material it will cover, and why that material

is important and useful to the reader. Clearly summarize the paper's premise and key findings or recommendations.

Objectivity

Content should be objective and avoid mentioning or promoting specific financial products or services. Any statements or

assertions should be supported by sufficient research and data.

Research

Academic research in financial planning should have a direct and demonstrable application or benefit for financial planners.

All research should be readily accessible by editorial staff, review board members and readers.

Length

Manuscripts should run approximately 5,000 words .

Format

Your name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, and a brief biography should be on the cover page. For blind-

review purposes, the second page should consist of the title and an executive summary of no more than 250 words, but not

your name.

Executive Summary The executive summary, ideally in a bulleted list, should tell readers what they can expect from reading your paper, including

all major points and broad conclusions. Do not attempt to sell the reader on the merits of the article. Include information such

as whether your article is a primer, for the experienced planner, or for planners at any level and highlight any specific

opportunities for practical application of your data.

Infographics

Infographics—tables, drawings, graphs, charts, or other visual support material—should not be excessive in length or in

number.

The FPA NCA will continue a Mentorship Program, and would like to encourage anyone interested in either being

a mentor or wanting a mentor, to contact Laurie Belew at [email protected]. We are hoping that some of

our more experienced members can help some of our new members with career and business guidance. For more

information, please contact Jon. Thank you!

Calling All Planners who are looking for Best Business Practices

FPA NCA has reached out to our members for valuable coaches, mentors and experienced planners to share their

wealth of knowledge on best business practices to fellow planners. We have had a very positive response from our

members in this regard.

Now, we are looking for you if you are in need of some coaching, mentoring or guidance on best business

practices. Your fellow planners have agreed to give a little time or council to our community planners! The time

involved in these coaching or mentoring situations may be small or large, depending on the availability of the

mentor, and depending on what you are looking for. Also, we would welcome your input and work to volunteer on

our committee…….

Please respond to this message as soon as possible if you would like to be considered for a mentee spot or would

be willing to help out our committee in other ways. Thank you for your support and for making a connection to

others!

We are searching for Experienced or Veteran Planners who will give a little time or council to new planners! In

our community we have some new planners who are searching for coaching, mentoring, or business practice

advice. Your time commitment can be small to just lend a hand or large to volunteer on our committee…….

Please respond to this message if you would be willing to help out a little in this regard. Please respond as soon as

possible if you are able to help! Thank you for your support and for making a connection to others to help them

gain your valuable expertise!
