In 1868, during the reign of Queen Victoria,Mr Thomas Fox opened a shop in the Cityof London, making and selling the mostfinely crafted whalebone framed, silkumbrellas.

In the 1880s a major change in themanufacturing process took place with theintroduction of a stainless steel umbrellamechanism, invented by a Mr Samuel Fox(no relation). By replacing the traditionalwhalebone frame of the umbrella with thenew steel frame, Fox created a unique,stronger and lighter umbrella. And so themodern umbrella was born.

As a result over the next few decades thecompany grew in status and reputation,and by the 1930s had started to export toJapan, USA and other overseas markets.

Among the many milestones in theirillustrious history (which includes makingumbrellas for some of the most prestigiousstores and individuals around the world;including Royalty, Presidents and PrimeMinisters) is the first nylon umbrella.

This was developed during their workmaking parachute flares in the SecondWorld War. The fabric used was a newinvention called nylon. Realising theadvantages of using nylon instead of silk,they introduced the first nylon coveredumbrella in 1947 at the "Britain Can Make It"Exhibition at Crystal Palace, in London.

Since those days the company has built areputation for excellence, skill and superbcraftsmanship, and today the quality andattention to detail are still the hallmark of aFox Umbrella.

The process of making Fox Umbrellas haschanged very little, as to obtain the highquality that we require, it is still necessaryto rely on the skill of hand-workers ratherthan machines.

Fox Umbrellas, with its history and globallyrenowned reputation for excellence, stillexists today, albeit with a change of nameto Fox Umbrellas Ltd.
