Now, more important then ever….. FORTY CANS FOR LENT -

Sponsored by the Glenville Knights and the St. Vincent de Paul Society through April 8.

Commit to donating one can of food a day, For 40 days, to help feed our community. Please join this campaign to provide food for our friends and neighbors. The impact of the current viral crisis will hurt many of our family, friends, and neighbors financially. If you can make an extra effort to donate to our Food Pantry at this time, it can make a great difference. The church is open; come by and leave your donations inside the doors.

Donate used or new paperback books to our troops overseas! Boxes are at church entrances, where you can place paperbacks, used DVDs, and books on CD. There is a particular need for history, biography, military history, sci/fi fantasy, and action/adventure, although all genres are accepted. Donations to help send the books overseas are also needed. Contact Addison Evanoff at [email protected] or (518) 384-0745.

Regarding Mass Intentions: All scheduled mass intentions will be honored. Fr. Jerry will pray for each one in private or livestreamed Masses. At this time we are not accepting any Mass intentions until further notice. Fr. Jerry invites you to join in prayer during times when you might typically be at Mass. Daily readings can be found via our website by clicking on the Daily Readings button on the home page.

A Prayer of Spiritual Communion Jesus, really present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar, since I cannot now receive thee under the sacramental veil, I beseech thee, with a heart full of love and longing, to come spiritually into my soul through the Immaculate Heart of thy most Holy Mother, and to abide with me, thou in me, and I in thee, in time and in eternity. Amen.

A message from Magnificat magazine: During this difficult time, many of the faithful may be unable to attend Mass. To help them sanctify their day and to keep walking in the liturgical rhythm of the Church, we are honored to make our online version of MAGNIFICAT temporarily available to everyone for free at this link: www.magnificat.com/free .

Parish Nurse Notes: In this time in our history, healthcare has become the talk of the day. However, if you think back, over time, we have had many healthcare scares and warnings, so let’s put these recent events in perspective and use them as a time to step back and review our healthcare practices. There are principles of good healthcare that we should always practice, which include consistent and good handwash-ing principles. Eating healthy, following the American Dietetic Association (March is National Nutrition Month see this website for additional information http://www.eatright.org/) recom-mendations for daily intake of fruits, vegetables and water in-take. Did you know that dehydration, which comes from a lack of fluid intake, can cause many of the symptoms you may experience? With fluid intake always follow your physician rec-ommendations if you have kidney disease or congestive heart failure issues in your history. Just some “food for thought” during National Nutrition

Month.

From Pastoral Care: If you are in need of someone to pick up groceries, health or personal products, or prescriptions ar the pharmacy, give Rachel a call here at the rectory (518-399-9168). Remember that we will do what we can as we continue to move forward on this unknown journey. May you know God’s love for you during this difficult time. Peace-Rachel

Sunday, March 22, 2020 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT; SECOND SCRUTINY OF THE ELECT Clarity at last Darkness and light are biblical themes that invite us to take an internal sight exam. How clearly do we see? Like the man in today’s gospel, we’re all born blind into a world grown accustomed to the blurred vision of habitual sin. We view most decisions in terms of what’s in it for us. It’s difficult and challenging to climb up to a higher point of view to ask: What will serve the common good? Today, we pray that our Elect will have the grace to seek and attain that higher ground. And might we too ask for the same?

READINGS: 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41 (31). “What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?”

Monday, March 23, 2020 MEMORIAL OF TURIBIUS OF MOGROVEJO, BISHOP Step down to your calling God must have a great sense of irony. Imagine the head of an important court suddenly being summoned to pastor a far-off land filled with people who speak unknown languages. Such was the destiny of Turibius of Mogrovejo, summoned from his post as chief inquisitor in Granada, Spain to pastor the Lima archdiocese, which included the indigenous Andean communities of 16th-century colonial Peru. Turibius went with the flow admirably, traversing his vast archdiocese three times on foot, alone, ministering to all along his route. He defended those who suffered the greatest injustice under the colonial rule he himself represented. Downward mobility is a pattern in saints’ biographies. Time to evaluate your priorities?

READINGS: Isaiah 65:17-21; John 4:43-54 (244). “He and his whole household came to believe.”

Tuesday, March 24, 2020 LENTEN WEEKDAY Be a voice for the voiceless Saint Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador who spoke out against grave social injustice in El Salvador, was assassinated by his opponents while celebrating Mass on this day in 1980, and it is commemorated by the United Nations as International Day for the Right to the Truth. Today is an opportunity for you to honor the memory of human rights victims, pay tribute to those who struggle to protect those rights for all, remember the important work of Romero, and commit yourself to his values of speaking truth to power, even when it costs you.

READINGS: Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12; John 5:1-16 (245). “Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you.”

Wednesday, March 25, 2020 SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD Say yes to God The Annunciation is a beautiful feast that celebrates Mary’s “yes” to God during her encounter with the angel Gabriel. Mary doesn’t rattle off a quick response but rather pauses and ponders, wondering what this might mean. Her response is a choice not simply to give birth to a child, but to fully embrace her identity and her calling as an intimate companion with God. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.” It is as if Mary is saying, “Look! My life is fully in God! Everything about who I am is for and with God!” During this day of Annunciation, reflect on your daily “yeses.” How do these reflect your own identity and life in God?

READINGS: Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10; Hebrews 10:4-10; Luke 1:26-38 (545). “Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.’ ”

Thursday, March 26, 2020 LENTEN WEEKDAY Reflect in your heart Imagine taking a walk with the Lord today. As you walk along, he suddenly stops and looks at you with a question in his eyes. He hesitates, but then goes ahead and asks: “Do you have the love of God in your heart?” You might respond: “I am doing my best to be patient, to think of others first, to be kind and generous. It is Lent after all.” Jesus persists: “But do you have the love of God in your heart?” Take five minutes today and consider that question. Be at peace with whatever thoughts come to mind. Then allow the insights you gain to set the rest of the day's course.

READINGS: Exodus 32:7-14; John 5:31-47 (247). “It is simply that I know you and you do not have the love of God in your hearts.”

Friday, March 27, 2020 Lenten Weekday, Day of Abstinence What price would you pay? Today’s gospel has an aura of doom about it, with Jesus getting a clear message that authorities would like to kill him. The church teaches that “Jesus went up to Jerusalem voluntarily, knowing well that there he would die a violent death because of the opposition of sinners,” as the Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it (). How far are you willing to go to “do the right thing”? Contemplate today the sacrifices you have made and what you would be willing to do to be true to your beliefs.

READINGS: Wisdom 2:1a, 12-22; John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 (248). “Some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, ‘Is he not the one they are trying to kill?’”

Saturday, March 28, 2020 LENTEN WEEKDAY The plot thickens Next weekend we observe Palm Sunday, ushering in a dramatic week that includes the tragedy of Our Lord’s suffering and death. The gospels describe for us the suspicion and plotting that will lead to his Crucifixion. Among the religious leaders, only Nicodemus gives Jesus the benefit of the doubt and tries to argue his case. This is the same Nicodemus who has already visited Jesus under cover of night to discuss his teachings and who provides the burial spices after Jesus is crucified. How can you be Nicodemus in situations where others are subject to suspicion and suffering?

READINGS: Jeremiah 11:18-20; John 7:40-53 (249). "I, like a trusting lamb led to slaughter, had not realized that they were hatching plots against me."

From the Pastor:

It’s Monday and I’m here writing my thoughts for this upcoming weekly bulletin. This week, the church celebrates Laetare Sunday, named for the first word in the opening antiphon: “Rejoice.” It is a Sunday to anticipate the end of Lent and look ahead to the Easter miracle, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This Sunday is, if you will a “light at the end of the tunnel.” Yet, for many the word “rejoice” is not the first word that comes to mind at this time. Rather, I think of the words “worry,” “concern,” or even “fear.” In the almost 42 years of my priestly ministry, never has Mass been “canceled until further notice.” Yes, there was a weekend or perhaps two that Mass was cancelled for snow or ice, but that was only for a day or two. Now, we hear “until further notice”, as the people in Italy and many places around the world are hearing. It has been very challenging here at the parish.

As hard as we tried to keep the church and center sanitized, we know that it is impossible to get everything, and that the safest thing to do is to follow the lead of our church and civil leaders. This means canceling all church services, along with all classes and events in the parish center. We are truly encouraging our members to remain in the safety of their homes as much as possible. Our parish staff continues to do their respective ministries, but we all do so with a sense of caution and concern for our own wellbeing. If and when the time comes, we will adapt. Yet, through it all, we trust that the Resurrected Christ is with us. We are wise to remember the words that St. Julian of Norwich prayed, “all will be well, all will be well, all manner of things will be well.” We continue to use the tools of Lent, i.e., prayer, fasting and almsgiving, and we continue to say our prayers and increase our prayers. We are a resilient and faith filled people. Let us pray for and care for one another.

In an effort to keep things as normal as possible, and to anchor ourselves in our faith, we are going to Facebook Live Sunday Mass from our church at 9 am. This will be viewable on Facebook at that time and on our page to watch later if you wish. If this goes well, we also hope to live stream the Stations of the Cross on Friday at 7 pm and morning Mass, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 9 am. I’m grateful to our staff and Liturgy Committee for making this possible. I am saying Masses privately and remembering all of the intentions that you have scheduled.

If you cannot join us online, I encourage you to read the Gospels (daily readings can be found by going to our parish website and clicking on Daily Readings tab partway down the homepage), pray with your families, and join yourself to the Eucharist—the source and summit of our Catholic faith—by making an act of spiritual communion.

Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles said: "I wish, my Lord, to receive you with the purity, humility, and devotion with which your most holy Mother received you, with the spirit and fervor of the saints." Let us make this commitment to Christ by praying as a family in at home at the same time we would have been attending Mass. Please think about how you can use this time to retain a sense of Sabbath and always cultivate a sense of hope. Of course, please continue to pray for all those affected by the coronavirus around the world. Fr. James Martin SJ recently wrote in an art ic le, “Many things have been cancelled because of the coronavirus. Love is not one of them.” May we continue to always love in the name of Christ.

Our Easter letter was scheduled to be mailed this week. Due to the coronavirus, our church schedule remains very much in flux. We are holding the letter for the time being to see what adjustments the Diocese will have (or not have) for the celebration of Holy Week. All the latest updates can be found on our website, icglenville.com and on our Facebook page. If you have not already liked and followed Immaculate Conception Glenville on Facebook, please do so now.

We are all affected by the coronavirus in many ways like work, school, play, and finances. Investments have plummeted, many are out of work and so on. Here at the church we too have been hit hard with the lack of weekly support. Our budget remains the same, yet our income has radically diminished. Please, if you are able, mail in your weekly offertory gift or consider our automatic e-Giving. Giving online saves paper, postage, collection counting time, etc. It’s easy, safer, quicker, and more consistent. Please call the office or email Kathy Friscic at [email protected] for more info. We realize you might not be able to give at the same level that you have been, but if everyone can give a little, we can carry on. Thank you so much for your ongoing support and generosity.

Congratulations to the Knights of Columbus for their three successful weeks of Friday Fish Fry’s. Unfortunately, the Knights had to cancel the weekly fish fry, due to the coronavirus and the Governor Cuomo’s safety directive at this time. A job well done ladies and gentlemen!

Until next time, be well, do good deeds if you can, wash your hands, and say your prayers…lots of them! Fr. Jerry
