Among others, the biblical story of Noah, and the writings of the prophets who firmly believed in God’s promise of sal- vation, are examples of faith in action. Sometimes, accepting things on faith can be difficult. Markos tells a story about J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis during a time when Lewis had not quite accepted Christianity. Late one night, Lewis and Tolkien were taking a walk while discussing faith. Lewis had already moved away from atheism, but could not quite accept the incarnation of Christ because it seemed like a myth. Tolkien suggested to Lewis that the Gospel story sounded like a myth because Christ was the fulfillment of all the hopes and desires of people everywhere, not just those of the Jewish prophets, and was the myth that came true. Apparently, these simple but profound words of Tolkien’s were the turning point for Lewis, an instant that can be described by the Greek word kairos. Kairos, according to Markos, is “a critical, opportune moment when all the strands come together” and this is what Lewis experienced that night. At that moment, he suddenly understood that Jesus’ birth in Jerusalem, the City of David, was the decisive moment when God’s promise of salvation became reality. So, in this wonderful season, have a blessed and happy Christmas, and remember each day of the Christmas season to take time away from “making merry” to be thankful for the humble birth of Jesus.
