GATHERING

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

GATHERING SONG Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (ELW 834)

The time of gathering song may be brief or extended, and may include

one or more of the following: hymns, psalms; a Kyrie; a canticle of

praise.

1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,

most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise!

2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,

nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;

thy justice like mountains high soaring above

thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

3 To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;

in all life thou livest, the true life of all;

we blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree,

and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

4 Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light;

thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;

all laud we would render; oh, help us to see

'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

Have mercy on us, Lord, and hear our solemn prayer.

We come to hear your living word; it saves us from despair.

Have mercy on us, Christ, and wash away our sin.

Pour out your grace and make us whole that new life may begin.

Have mercy on us, Lord, make sin and shame depart.

Renew us with your saving pow’r; create in us new hearts!

CANTICLE OF PRAISE

Glory be to God in heaven; peace, goodwill to all the earth.

Mighty God of all creation, Father of surpassing worth:

we exalt you, we adore you, we lift high our thanks and praise.

Saints and angels bow before you; here on earth our songs we raise.

Page 4: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost ELW Holy Communion

Glory be to Christ forever, Lamb of God and Lord of love.

Son of God and gracious Savior, you have come from heav’n above;

on the cross you died to save us; now you reign at God’s right hand.

Hear our prayer; restore, forgive us; in your promise firm we stand.

Holy One we now acclaim you; Lord alone, to you we call;

Holy One in faith we name you, God most high, yet near to all:

Jesus Christ, with God the Spirit, in the Father’s splendor bright.

For the peace that we inherit, glory be to God on high!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The presiding minister leads the prayer of the day.

E pule, Kakou. Let us pray.

A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

O God our strength, without you we are weak and wayward creatures.

Protect us from all dangers that attack us from the outside, and cleanse

us from all evil that arises from within ourselves, that we may be

preserved through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

The assembly is seated.

WORD

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9

The Israelites believed the law was a divine gift that provided guidelines

for living out the covenant. Moses commands the people to obey the law

and to neither add to nor subtract from it. The Israelites are also to

teach the law to their children and their children’s children.

A reading from Deuteronomy.

1So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am

teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the

land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2You must

neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything

from it, but keep the commandments of the LORD your God with which I

am charging you.

6You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom

and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes,

will say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!” 7For

what other great nation has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is

whenever we call to him? 8And what other great nation has statutes and

Page 6: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost ELW Holy Communion

6

ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today?

9But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget

the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind

all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your

children’s children.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 15

1LORD, who may dwell in your | tabernacle?

Who may abide upon your | holy hill?

2Those who lead a blameless life and do | what is right,

who speak the truth | from their heart;

3they do not slander with the tongue, they do no evil | to their friends;

they do not cast discredit up- | on a neighbor.

4In their sight the wicked are rejected, but they honor those who | fear

the LORD.

They have sworn upon their health and do not take | back their

word.

5They do not give their money in hope of gain, nor do they take bribes

a- | gainst the innocent.

Those who do these things shall never be | overthrown.

SECOND READING: James 1:17-27

The letter of James was intended to provide first-century Christians with

instruction in godly behavior. Here Christians are encouraged to listen

carefully and to act on what they hear, especially by caring for those

least able to care for themselves.

A reading from James.

17Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above,

coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation

or shadow due to change. 18In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us

Page 7: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost ELW Holy Communion

7

birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits

of his creatures.

19You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to

listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for your anger does not produce

God’s righteousness. 21Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and

rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted

word that has the power to save your souls.

22But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive

themselves. 23For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are

like those who look at themselves in a mirror; 24for they look at

themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. 25But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and

persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be

blessed in their doing.

26If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but

deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. 27Religion that is pure

and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and

widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil (ELW

512)

The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.

Lord, let my heart be good soil,

open to the seed of your word.

Lord, let my heart be good soil,

where love can grow and peace is understood.

When my heart is hard, break the stone away.

When my heart is cold, warm it with the day.

When my heart is lost, lead me on your way.

Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart,

Lord, let my heart be good soil.

GOSPEL: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Mark’s gospel depicts Jesus as challenging traditional ways in which

religious people determine what is pure or impure. For Jesus, the

observance of religious practices cannot become a substitute for godly

words or deeds that spring from a faithful heart.

The holy gospel according to Mark.

Glory to you, O Lord.

1Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from

Jerusalem gathered around [Jesus], 2they noticed that some of his

disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them.

Page 9: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost ELW Holy Communion

9

3(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly

wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; 4and they do

not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also

many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and

bronze kettles.) 5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do

your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat

with defiled hands?” 6He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about

you hypocrites, as it is written,

‘This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me;

7in vain do they worship me,

teaching human precepts as doctrines.’ 8You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

14Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all

of you, and understand: 15there is nothing outside a person that by going

in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.”

21For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions

come: fornication, theft, murder, 22adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit,

licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. 23All these evil things come

from within, and they defile a person.”

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service (ELW

The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song.

1 Lord, whose love in humble service

bore the weight of human need,

who upon the cross, forsaken,

worked your mercy's perfect deed:

we, your servants, bring the worship

not of voice alone, but heart;

consecrating to your purpose

ev'ry gift which you impart.

2 Still your children wander homeless;

still the hungry cry for bread;

still the captives long for freedom;

still in grief we mourn our dead.

As you, Lord, in deep compassion

healed the sick and freed the soul,

by your Spirit send your power

to our world to make it whole.

3 As we worship, grant us vision,

till your love's revealing light

in its height and depth and greatness

dawns upon our quickened sight,

making known the needs and burdens

your compassion bids us bear,

stirring us to ardent service,

your abundant life to share.

4 Called by worship to your service,

forth in your dear name we go,

to the child, the youth, the aged,

love in living deeds to show;

hope and health, good will and comfort,

counsel, aid and peace we give,

that your servants, Lord, in freedom

may your mercy know and live.

APOSTLES' CREED

The Nicene Creed or the Apostles’ Creed may be spoken. The Nicene

Creed is appropriate during Advent, Christmas, Easter, and on festival

days; the Apostles’ Creed during Lent and at other times.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

world, and all in need.

A brief silence.

We pray for the church, that it is a safe haven for all who seek your

trusting that we will be united with them in glory. E ka Haku.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We

have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we

have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you

with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive

us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and

walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

Amen.

The presiding minister announces God’s forgiveness with these or

similar words.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and

for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained

minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare

to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father,

and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord,

and fill to the brim our cup of blessing.

Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown,

that we may be fed with the bread of life.

Gather the hopes and dreams of all;

unite them with the prayers we offer.

Grace our table with your presence,

and give us a foretaste of the feast to come.

OFFERING PRAYER

As the table is prepared, the assisting minister leads in prayer.

E pule, Kakou. Let us pray.

A brief silence

God our provider,

we bring nothing into this world

and we can take nothing out of it.

Accept the gifts you have first given us,

which we bring to your table,

and with them the offering of our lives.

Nourish us now with the life that really is life,

revealed to us in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

Blessed are you, O God of the universe.

Your mercy is everlasting

and your faithfulness endures from age to age.

All creation sings your praise.

Sun, moon, and stars reflect your glory.

Mountains, lakes, and forests declare your wonders.

With Sarah and Abraham we go out in faith, trusting your promise.

With Miriam and Moses we celebrate our deliverance from bondage.

With Naomi and Ruth we bind ourselves together in covenant love.

With Jonathan and David we delight in the gift of deep and abiding

friendship.

With Mary and Elizabeth we welcome your presence in the birth of

Jesus,

the Holy One.

With Lazarus, Martha, and Mary we give thanks for the blessings of

family.

With disciples and followers we marvel at the reign of God come near.

With saints through the ages we ponder the mystery of Christ’s dying

and rising.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Page 18: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost ELW Holy Communion

18

With hearts full of memories and hopes,

we break this bread and share this cup,

remembering the death and resurrection of Christ,

and his promise to be with us always

as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

O Divine Lover, you are the breath within us.

You are our heart’s desire.

You are our priceless treasure.

You are the garden of paradise.

Come down, O Love divine.

Come among us, O passionate Fire.

Come within us, O Spirit of unity.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts,

which we are about to receive from your bounty.

Bless our table and the feast we share.

Bless us with gladness of heart.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit.

At this table make us your body.

Form us to be people of justice and peace.

Fill us with gratitude and generosity

that we may bear the fruit of love in word and deed.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Praise to you, Author of creation.

Praise to you, O Beloved One.

Praise to you, O Giver of all good things.

Praise to you, blessed and holy Trinity,

one God, now and forever. Amen.
