Removing the Complexity of Bringing
Innovative and Sustainable
IoT Solutions to Market
www.thinglogix.com
The Internet of Things (IoT) – a network of devices
and systems operating in synchronicity to achieve
purposeful, coordinated outcomes – is not a new
concept. Early visions for IoT blended the
longstanding principles of distributed computing
with distributed physical infrastructure to transform
physical objects into “smart infrastructure”.
While much of the early thinking about IoT business
models focused on embedding sensors and
automated controls in large installations of
distributed infrastructure, a variety of business and
technical factors has expanded society’s
understanding of potential applications for IoT to
encompass many other realms. Innovative
businesses in a wide variety of industries, as well as
clever non-business organizations, are
demonstrating the viability of IoT across an
increasing number of use cases in a diverse range of
settings. Even after ?ltering out the hype that new technology advances inevitably create, the IoT
opportunity remains highly compelling.
Industry analyst Gartner quanti?ed the global installed base of IoT-enabled devices at 4.9 billion
units in 2015, and projects that this will grow to 20.4
billion units by the end of 2020 – representing an
annual growth rate of 33%.
Gartner: “Forecast: Internet of Things – Endpoints and Associated Services, Worldwide, 2016”;

Within business categories, Gartner projects that
the top three cross-industry segments will be energy
(+89%), buildings/facilities (+79%), and automotive
(+68%), while the top three vertical-
speci?c segments will be retail and wholesale (+62%), education (+47%), and government (+27%).
Within consumer categories, Gartner projects that
the top three segments will be home energy
management (+90%), home automation (+78%), and
home security and safety (+63%).

CHALLENGE #1:
Despite the promise of IoT, the challenges in bridging
the gap between IoT vision and functional IoT
solution, not to mention a technically reliable and
market-viable solution, remain daunting.
Complicating factors include:
Designing: structuring a solution that
offers compelling functionality, while
delivering performance, reliability,
scalability, extensibility, and security
Developing and testing: rapidly
assembling functional prototypes that
integrate application software, device OS,
plaform-layer functionality, and core
infrastructure (compute, network, storage)
capabilities
Deploying: quickly ?elding the solution – both hardware and software elements – in a
live ?eld setting at scale, while ensuring that the solution performs as well as it did in the
test environment
Integrating: ensuring that critical internal
and external devices, data @ows, and systems engage with each other, at the right time, in
the right way, and with the desired result
Operating: running the solution as an
integral part of the business, scaling up and
down as necessary, while remaining highly
available and secure
Maintaining: proactively making
adjustments, preventing issues, and rapidly
responding to unforeseen problems to
deliver reliable functionality at the device,
application, platform, and infrastructure
layers
Evolving: adding features and
functionality, adapting to changes in hosted
infrastructure services, incorporating
third-party data and capabilities

Rapidly Bring Innovative, Sustainable, Enterprise-grade IoT Solutions to Market
Bringing an IoT solution to market is no simple
matter. It implies not a one-time event, but instead a
full-lifecycle approach, from concept to launch, to
evolution, and onward to the next generation that
replaces it. Solution design must emphasize
adaptability and extensibility, so that the solution
does not become a static “point solution” that
ultimately becomes obsolete. Engineering and
product teams that rush a solution to market without
planning for the full lifecycle often waste the
organization’s time and resources, as their efforts
tend to yield “stranded assets” in terms of their
interoperability, extensibility, and practical life span.
To be attractive to end-customers and sustainable in
the market, the solution must be enterprise-grade:
high-performance, reliable, scalable, extensible, and
secure. Market-facing features and functionality
must drive real value and create meaningful
differentiation. Back-end technology enablers must
be con?gured and continuously managed to ensure that the solution meets or exceeds end-customer
expectations, as well as the expectations of the
business owners.
Few organizations possess the capabilities to make
all of this happen, and even for those that do, it
remains a challenge to support these requirements
sustainably. IoT can be a game-changer, but
supporting it can’t be an afterthought, an “additional
duty”, or something that individuals struggle to
manage when they aren’t doing their “day job”.
What if there was a way for every organization to
focus on what it does best, while enabling
compelling IoT solutions in a simple, painless, and
sustainable way?
CHALLENGE #2:
Forward-thinking organizations have already
embraced the cloud to enable critical business
capabilities and thrive in the digital economy. Many
of these organizations have adopted Amazon Web
Services (AWS) to provide core cloud infrastructure
and services. AWS has earned its reputation as the
world’s leading cloud infrastructure and services
provider because it delivers a wide range of
powerful, enterprise-grade capabilities that help
businesses and other types of organizations succeed
in a world increasingly governed by digital
technologies. Organizations seeking to create
differentiated, high-performance, high-availability
IoT solutions are wise to select AWS for core
infrastructure and services.
Yet many such organizations neglect to consider the
complexity of weaving together various AWS
products and orchestrating functionality across
them to deliver the desired functionality in
market-facing IoT solutions.
No solution architected on AWS “just happens”. AWS
offers nearly 50 products that are relevant for IoT
solutions. Developers need to understand the
individual AWS products necessary to deliver the
required IoT solution functionality, how these AWS
products interoperate to enable the IoT solution,
how the various AWS products affect solution
performance in different deployment scenarios, and
how AWS product changes affect the market-facing
IoT solution. This is a complicated set of variables to
master.
Even in large organizations that have ample IT
budgets and highly experienced engineering staff,
devoting time and resources to navigating the
intricacies of AWS may not be practical.
Extrapolating this time and resource commitment
over the full lifecycle of an IoT solution, IT
organizations must face the question of which
activities generate the most value.
Which set of activities drives the most market
differentiation and value – innovating on front-end,
market-facing IoT solutions at the application layer? –
or devoting substantial time and resources to stitching
together core functionality at the infrastructure layer
and ensuring that the various pieces interoperate
properly?

We at ThingLogix know that developing and ?elding a viable IoT solution based on underlying AWS
technology is about much more than stitching
together the various discrete AWS products. It is also
about creating a sustainable, truly enterprise-grade
solution rather than just an ad hoc development
project, simplifying the developer experience,
maximizing the developer’s creative capabilities, and
enabling operating capabilities to support the
solution.
So, how does Foundry help? It…
By simplifying the way that development teams work
with AWS and providing the basis for holistic IoT
solutions, Foundry extracts the developer from the
tedium of writing custom code to make AWS work,
and transforms the developer role into something
more akin to a creative artist blended with a system
administrator. Foundry allows developers and
product teams to focus on making their IoT solutions
better.
Creates a platform layer between core
infrastructure and market-facing
applications
Abstracts the complexity of the underlying
AWS infrastructure and services
Simpli?es the user experience for developing, testing, ?elding, and managing IoT solutions, dramatically accelerating
time-to-market
Gives developers the power to write simple
queries that answer essential questions,
and renders the question “where do I even
put my code?” obsolete
Transforms the experience of working with
serverless computing from a state of
constant searching for answers to “how do
these cloud services even work?” to “how
do I make my IoT solution even better for
my customers?”
Provides the operations functionality that
engineering teams sometimes neglect to
adequately consider, such as account
management, user management, asset
management, and interfaces with ?nancial systems
With Foundry, engineering and product management
teams can collaborate more effectively, specialize in
innovation activities that drive real value, and increase
the pace and volume of IoT innovation. More time
spent on IoT innovation = more solutions, better
solutions, and better business results.
