a career in surgery, whilst in Rwanda, we had abroad cross-section of medical students who

were not necessarily career surgeons butexpected to perform surgical procedures during

their intern years. However, from talking withthe delegates, another factor seems to be thatRwandan medical school education remains

    traditionally didactic.

We collected both a pre-course needsassessment and post-course candidate feedback,

the latter being very positive with a medianoverall score for the course of 9.25/10. ASiThave since been invited back to convene furthercourses for those who we were unable toaccommodate during this pilot. We have hadsome interest from local residents in teaching on

the course in future, and over the long term, wehope to partner with both the Rwandan student

surgical society and local surgeons to make thecourse entirely Rwandan delivered, so that it canbe sustainably maintained without externalsupport.

We would like to thank Dr Georges Ntakiyiruta,Chief of Surgery at CHUK, for his enthusiasticsupport of this venture. We also benefited from

the help of Zeta Mutabazi and Philippe Nyembo,

both Rwandan medical students, who workedtirelessly to publicise the course to theircolleagues and source local materials for

    teaching.

ASiT is especially grateful for the support of theThe Royal College of Surgeons of England, TheRoyal College of Physicians and Surgeons ofGlasgow, Lifebox Foundation, Elsevier, CRCPress, Swann-Morton and MedAid, and also all

the individual trainees who donated money, equipment and books. Of our authors, RhiannonHarries, Aneel Bhangu and Will Muirhead wereawarded the Rex & Jean Lawrie Fellowship, and

Edward Fitzgerald, Andrew Beamish and VimalGokani were awarded the Stefan & Anna GaleskiFellowship, all in association with the RoyalCollege of Surgeons of England.
