From the CEO’s Desk

What the Community Foundation Can Do For You

Several years ago, I recall being asked by one of our citizens, “What can the community foundation do for me?” After a brief moment, I responded the best I could, but our discussion eventually became quite lengthy. After visiting with this individual, I thought that there must be many more of our donors and citizens who might be thinking the same thing. So, below is my condensed version of our hour long discussion.

The Foundation provides permanence. You are assured that your gifts will benefit the agencies, residents, and students of your community in perpetuity (“forever”). Your gift will be safe. As a permanent endowment, the principal will never be spent – but the earnings will be there to permanently support your community.

The Foundation provides flexibility. You may select from a variety of types of funds, which we call “endowment funds.” There are a variety of ways in which you may want to benefit your community with your gift. Check out all the options on our website at: https://goo.gl/AjpGNy.

Gifts to the Foundation can reduce your tax burden. Income taxes are reduced through deductions allowed by the IRS for contributions to a public charity, which is how a community foundation is classified.

Your community foundation provides professional administration. The community foundation continually assesses the changing needs of your community and awards grants to agencies best addressing those needs, sparing you, the donor, of having to make such judgments. In the case of designated funds, the community foundation easily handles the issuance of annual grants to the organizations you specify when you establish the fund.

Your community foundation provides a perfect alternative to a private foundation. Donors who want the individual involvement of a private foundation without the accompanying administrative complexities, restrictions, and expenses can accomplish the same result by establishing a donor-advised fund with the community foundation. Using a donor-advised fund within a community foundation also offers a donor more generous tax deductions than those offered to donors to a private foundation.

Whatever your charitable intentions, there are ways to achieve them through your gift to your community foundation. The community foundation is easy, convenient, and inexpensive.

Thank you for all you do.

Dale A. White, Chief Executive Officer

FALL 2017 NEWSLETTER | 5

Taking Charge of Your PlansQUESTIONS & ANSWERS — ABOUT WILLS & BEQUESTS

A WELL-PLANNED WILL is often the centerpiece of an effective and thoughtful estate plan. When preparing or revising a will, one makes important choices that make it possible to fulfill personal wishes, such as:

• Distributing cash, investments, real estate, and personal property to family and other loved ones • Providing property management for heirs who may not be prepared to manage their financial affairs • Reducing taxes and estate settlement costs that could otherwise be due • Making “gifts of lifetime” to favorite charitable interests

By preparing and maintaining an up-to-date will, you may save your heirs from problems that can arise when you fail to plan. In spite of this, more than half of adult Americans reportedly do not have a will.

Read on for answers you may have about wills.

ConclusionYour will and long-range plans deserve careful attention. If you would like to create a charitable bequest in your will, please contact us for more information and legal language that should be used. Remember that such gifts can be made in memory of your loved ones. A charitable bequest is a meaningful way to memorialize someone special to you.

We will be pleased to assist you and your advisors as you consider the charitable dimension of your plans.

The purpose of this article is to provide general gift, estate, and financial planning information. It is not intended as legal, accounting, or other professional advice. For assistance in planning charitable gifts with tax and other financial implications, the services of appropriate advisors should be obtained. Consult with an attorney for advice if your plans require revision of a will or other legal documents.

Answers to Frequently Asked QuestionsWho needs a will?In most cases, those who own property and are concerned about who ultimately receives it need a will. Regardless of your age or financial standing, it is important to take charge of deciding who will one day enjoy the property you have accumulated over your lifetime.

Do both spouses need wills?Yes. Husbands and wives share the same need for making wills, even if much of their property is held jointly.

What if I have a will that no longer meets my needs?Your will should be reviewed periodically and updated to reflect changes in your life – marriages, births, deaths, financial gains or losses, and your personal goals. Tax law changes may also prompt a review of your plans.

Minor changes can be accomplished with a codicil - a simple amendment to an existing will. More substantial changes may require the drafting of a new will. Whether the changes are minor or extensive, always consult with your attorney when considering a revision, as handwritten changes may completely invalidate your will.

How much does it cost to make a will? The fees associated with drafting a will can be quite reasonable, especially when you consider that its purpose is to direct the distribution of property you may have worked a lifetime to accumulate. Taxes and settlement costs that can be avoided with a well-planned will can amount to many times the cost of preparing one.

What if I would like to include gifts to charity in my will? There are a number of ways to combine charitable gifts (also known as bequests) with your estate plans. Gifts can take the following forms:

• A specific amount: You designate that a particular dollar amount be transferred to one or more charities.

• A Specific property: You can designate that a particular asset, such as real estate, artwork, or other valuables, be used to fund a charitable gift. Such a bequest should be worded carefully, as the assets you own may change over time.

• A Percentage: A percentage of your estate can be designated for charitable purposes, thus ensuring that your gifts remain in proportion to other bequests.

• All or a portion of the residue: You can provide that charitable gifts be made from what is left after all other gifts to loved ones have been fulfilled.

Additionally, you may include provisions for charities through beneficiary designations of life insurance proceeds or retirement plan assets that may remain at death.

Memorial gifts provide a way for families and friends to remember their loved ones. Honor gifts are a way to celebrate a life, an anniversary, a birthday, or to simply say “thank you” for special things they have done for the donors or others.

We will acknowledge your gift to the appropriate family on the day it is received. The amount will not be mentioned. You will also receive an acknowledgement of your gift. We received the following Memorial and Tribute gifts from April 1, 2017, to September 30, 2017. The name of the person being memorialized or honored is in bold.

Dates to Remember!

November 15, 2017 – National Philanthropy Day® is both an official day and a grassroots movement. Every year since 1986, when President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day®, communities across the globe have celebrated by hosting events to recognize activities of donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy (“the love of humankind”).

November 28, 2017 – Giving Tuesday, often stylized as #GivingTuesday for purposes of hashtag activism, refers to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the United States. It is a movement to create a national day of giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday).

December 31, 2017 – Last day to make year-end gifts for 2017 tax purposes. Start planning now!

January 1, 2018 – The online application process for all Foundation scholarships begins. For details go to: www.wicf-inc.org.

March 1, 2018 – Deadline for all Foundation scholarships.

April 11, 2018 – Family Night - Covington Community Foundation.

If you are sponsoring/hosting an event that benefits one of the 180+ endowment and pass-through funds managed by the Foundation, please contact us. We would LOVE to help promote the event. Send your event information to: [email protected].

Meet Your Board & StaffWe’d like to know you better, and we want you to know us, too.

Our Board of Directors is deeply committed to the vision of stimulating philanthropy to build a better community. They generously contribute their time and talents to ensure that the Community Foundation grows and prospers so that Fountain County can benefit, forever.
