Dear Supporters,
We are pleased to provide you with this annual report, offering 2015 highlights from Doyon Foundation.
Our purpose at the Foundation is to serve the educational and cultural needs of Doyon’s shareholders and their children. We continued to do that in the past year through our scholarship program and language revitalization program.
In the 2014 – 2015 academic year, we awarded 565 scholarships to 364 students totaling $465,237. We understand the cost of higher education continues to increase year after year, and we want to ensure that we are providing our students with the financial support to make a meaningful difference. In light of that, we significantly increased our scholarship amounts in fall 2015.
We know from listening to our students that receiving a scholarship is about more than just money. For many, receiving a scholarship offers encouragement. For others, it honors the memory of a loved one. A scholarship is a tangible way we can say to our students, “We believe in you.”
Another area that we continue to make steady progress in is language revitalization. This is critically important as half of Alaska’s Native languages are based in the Doyon region.
We were thrilled to welcome Allan Hayton, a previous Foundation scholarship recipient, as our new language program director in 2015. With Allan’s leadership and the support of the Foundation’s language revitalization committee, we finalized a strategic plan for the program. We also established or deepened several important partnerships in the past year, which will help us reach more people and offer additional teaching and learning opportunities.
We are reminded that it took many years for our Native languages to become endangered, and it is going to take an ongoing commitment to revitalize those languages. However, there is much hope and we celebrate the fact that there is a program dedicated to the languages of the Doyon region, and that we have our own people leading language revitalization efforts throughout our region and the state. We have much to be grateful for.
On behalf of the entire staff and board, thank you for your interest and support of Doyon Foundation.
In the past year, we
participated in a strategic
planning process during
which we reaffirmed our
core purpose, mission,
vision, core values,
core programs and core
roles. One of our most
important core roles is to
be a funder, which allows
us to empower individuals
and communities by
providing needed
resources, whether that’s
financial, information or
human resources.
We also established a
long-term goal to pursue
now through 2024 to
position us to address
the whole person by
creating scholarships that
lead to jobs … language
opportunities that lead
to fluent speakers …
and cultural connections
that strengthen
our communities.
Welcome P lanning for our future

During the 2014 – 2015 academic year, we awarded a total of 565 scholarships to 364 students totaling $465,237. This 14 percent increase from the previous year is timely given the ever-increasing cost of tuition.
Noteworthy this year was the significant increase of scholarship award amounts, which the Foundation board approved at their May 2015 meeting. The increased amounts were awarded to students starting with the fall 2015 semester.
SCHOLARSHIP PREVIOUS INCREASED TYPE AMOUNT AMOUNT Full Time Basic $800 $1,200 Part Time Basic $400 $800 Competitive – Undergraduate or less $3,000 $5,000 Competitive – Graduate $5,000 $7,000 Competitive – Doctorate $7,000 $9,000 Short-Term Vocational $400 $1,000 (up to $1,000 or cost of class)
We also changed the application deadline for basic and competitive scholarships for the fall semester from April 15 to May 15. The change will allow more time for students to complete and submit their applications at the end of the spring semester or following high school graduation. The new deadline also gives our staff additional time to process summer scholarship applications before the fall scholarship application deadline.
DEADLINE TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP SEMESTER May 15 Basic and Competitive Fall November 15 Basic Spring March 15 Basic Summer
One additional change is that scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Going forward, if the number of applicants exceeds the Foundation’s annual scholarship budget, scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants in the order that completed applications were received.
Growing our scholarship support
Health and business were the top fields of study.
73% were female.
51% of our recipients were between the ages of 18 to 24.
52% were pursuing an undergraduate degree.
Of the undergraduates, 32% were freshmen
and 25% were seniors.

STRATEGIC PLAN. Under the leadership of our new language program director, Allan Hayton, we finalized a strategic plan that will guide us toward our vision to revitalize the nine Athabascan languages. The plan provides a general strategy for moving forward through the identification of key areas of focus, long-term goals, and short-term actions.
LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION GRANTS. The Foundation assumed administration of the Our Language grant program from Doyon, Limited last year. We solicited proposals from Doyon region tribal governments/tribal councils/communities; not-for-profit Alaska Native organizations, societies and community groups; and Alaska Native cultural, educational and recreational organizations/centers for $5,000 grants to support language revitalization projects. were eligible to apply. The first grants will be awarded in our 2015 – 2016 academic year.
WHERE ARE YOUR KEYS. We continued our close working relationship with the Where Are Your Keys (WAYK) team, including founder and practitioner Evan Gardner and his partner Susanna Ciotti, who have been valuable allies for our language program for several years now. Together, we hosted two WAYK support audio conferences in January, as well as a WAYK workshop in April. In the spring workshop, the facilitators worked with four fluent speakers and 19 students, focusing on four different Doyon region languages: Hän, Gwich’in, Denaakk’e and Deg Xinag.
HAN AND GWICH’IN LESSONS. We have two exciting partnerships in the works – one with the Yukon Native Language Center to develop Han language lessons, and one with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Interior Aleutians Campus, which is looking to develop an online Gwich’in course.
FNA/LANGUAGE NEST. We are working with Fairbanks Native Association (FNA) on a proposal to the Administration for Native Americans to fund a language immersion program. The FNA Head Start Program hopes to offer a “language nest” classroom at one of their locations. A language nest immerses children in their Native language, and provides a safe environment for young children to get a foothold in their ancestral language.
DOYON 7000 PARTNERSHIP. We had the opportunity to visit the headquarters of Transparent Language Online (TLO), which is working with us on the Doyon 7000 Partnership to create leading-edge software for the teaching and learning of our Athabascan languages.
We spent two days with TLO content managers, delving into the TLO system and receiving hands-on training. TLO’s open source language development model allows individuals to create content that will be culturally relevant, tailored to the instructor and students needs, while allowing subsequent improvements or corrections.
We have a great start on Koyukon language content, and have also began creating language support for Han, Lower Tanana, Tanacross, and Gwich’in. We look forward to making material available to learners in the near future.
LANGUAGE COMMITTEE We have been expanding the language committee to ensure representation of all nine languages. We would like to express deep appreciation to our Language Revitalization Committee members: • Paul Mountain, Chair, Denaakk’e (Koyukon) • Rochelle Adams, Gwich’in • Shanice Albert, Née’aaneegn’ (Upper Tanana) • Shyanne Beatty, Hän • Elizabeth Keating, Holikachuk • Beth Leonard, Deg Xinag • Stephanie Moe, Dihthâad Xt’een lin aandӗg’ (Tanacross) • Betty Petruska, Denak’i (Upper Kuskokwim) • Sonta Roach, Deg Xinag • Vera Weiser, Benhti Kenaga’ (Lower Tanana)

Less than 100 years ago, the ancestral languages of the Doyon region flourished and were the first languages spoken by everyone from children to elders. Today, tragically, all nine of the Athabascan languages of the Doyon region are considered severely to critically endangered. If the current trend is allowed to persist, all nine of our Athabascan languages will be lost within the span of a few generations.
The good news is that, in recent years, Alaska Native leaders have increasingly begun rallying around the issue of language loss. The establishment of the Doyon Foundation language revitalization program is just one example. Our board and staff are committed to ensuring that current and future generations have the opportunity to hear, to learn, and to speak the language of our ancestors.
During the past year, we made progress with the following efforts:

The Foundation’s largest income source is from Doyon, Limited. This amount consists of their annual contribution, as well as donations for the Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic and Calcutta, the language revitalization program, in-kind rent, and other donations.
Fundraising income includes blanket sales, golf tournament player registrations and Calcutta. “Other” income includes donations such as golf sponsorships, scholarship donations, and corporate and Nee Ts’ee Neeyh donations.
The base endowment, or where the endowment fund started at the beginning of the fiscal year, was $17.1 million dollars. With Doyon, Limited’s contribution and an investment loss, the ending endowment balance as of June 30, 2015 was $17.8 million.

Development EffortsDevelopment efforts during the past year included the Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic. We had 120 golfers, 50 volunteers and 50 sponsors participate in the 15th annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic, which took place in June in Fairbanks. This year’s golf classic was remarkable for several reasons – we raised approximately $125,000 from the Calcutta, live auction and golf classic. Plus, the tournament field sold out within two weeks of mailing out the invitation, and all 18 holes were sponsored.
The Foundation thanks all 50 sponsors, including our doctorate-level sponsors Doyon Family of Companies, KeyBank and Key Equipment Finance, and Sodexo. Also, a very special thank you to Doyon, Limited for their support in organizing the event. Their assistance allows our students to benefit from this fun annual fundraiser, while allowing our small staff to focus on our core mission.
Our Nee Ts’ee Neeyh program is another major fundraising effort. Nee Ts’ee Neeyh means “we all give or help” in the Koyukon Athabascan dialect, and it reminds us that we can each play a role in ensuring a healthy future by investing in our students today.
Nee Ts’ee Neeyh donations go directly into our general scholarship fund, which provides competitive, basic and vocational scholarships. We also offer advanced college credit scholarships to high school students wishing to take college-level classes. We received $24,000 in Nee Ts’ee Neeyh donations in the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

Last year was our fourth year of participating in Pick. Click. Give. In 2014, a total of 86 Alaskans contributed $5,475 to Doyon Foundation through Pick. Click. Give.
The Foundation also benefits from Fred Meyer’s Community Rewards program. By linking their Fred Meyer Rewards card to Doyon Foundation, shoppers can help the Foundation earn donations from Fred Meyer every time they shop.
