BelKNAp pROCTORSHIpEight students experience what it’s like to be a doctor when they shadow Norman Regional physicians as part of the Belknap Memorial Pre-Medical Proctorship.

The late Dr. Hal Belknap, with support from Norman Regional Hospital, created the pre-medical proctorship program in 1989. Dr. Belknap wanted to offer students who were seeking a profession in medicine the opportunity to experience various disciplines of the practice first hand. This year, the students will observe physicians and medical professionals from emergency room physicians to family practitioners and pediatricians to surgeons.

After Dr. Belknap’s passing in 2008, Dr. Brian Yeaman

and JoAnn Belknap partnered with NRHF to continue the program. Yeaman, who has a family practice in Norman, volunteers time each year to spend with every student. “This is a big leg up for those students who participate. The NRHF and the Health System’s collaboration in enabling this program is what makes it so unique,” Yeaman said. “The incredible physicians who dedicate their time and have continued to do so over the 26 years of this proctorship program are whom the students rave about. We couldn’t do this without such wonderful physicians who want to give back to their community.”

Chris Anderson, one of this year’s participants, stated “This program is an invaluable learning experience, as each student is given the privilege to accompany physicians in a

wide range of specialties as they deliver patient care. Exposure to their lives and duties has been instrumental in de-romanticizing certain aspects of medicine for me, even as it has strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in health care.”

JoAnn Belknap encouraged the students to “not only delve into a career, but to never forget the community in which you live. Who knows, in 10 – 12 years, these students can be the mentors giving back to the program that gave them a start at Norman Regional!

yOUR GIFTS IN ACTION!With your generous donations, the Foundation was able to provide for several health system needs in the last fiscal quarter of 2015. The Foundation Awards and Grants committee met to review each funding request, and $50,000 was awarded towards much-needed equipment and healthcare materials.

Below are some of the grants provided with your contributions:

· Accuvein Illumination Device aids in the insertion of Ivs, minimizing pain and discomfort to the patient, decreasing the risk of infection and supplies used due to multiple Iv attempts as well as decreasing the amount of time required to start Ivs in small children and infants.

· Behavioral Management Services is developing more therapeutic process groups for patients in their care. This two-part DvD series “Lift Up Your Heart Series” and “Stage II Recovery Series” will aid in the new groups.

· An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was purchased for the Family Medicine Clinic in Noble to provide exceptional patient care.

New workout equipment was provided to both the Norman Regional Hospital and HealthPlex locations. Promoting the health and wellness of our employees is an important part of the culture of NRHS.

For the past two years, Loralye has spent 10 ½ hours each week at Norman Regional Health System’s Infusion Center. She can be found sitting in the same recliner, tucked away in the corner, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, receiving Magnesium that her body desperately craves.

“The first time I walked into the center I was terrified. The room was big and really bright. Without (nurse) Julie, I wouldn’t have made it through the day,” she stated.

Loralye is one of more than 3,000 patients visiting the Infusion Center each year. A campaign to renovate the Infusion Center was approved by physicians and enhancements (through gifts to the inaugural Physician Legacy Fund) include relocating the nurse station; purchasing specialized recliners and chairs; adding privacy curtains, televisions, shelves and coat hooks; and installing flooring/fixtures.

The Norman Regional Health Foundation and the Physician Legacy Fund will provide patients a comfortable and healing environment where they will receive safe, quality and compassionate care.
