6 FORTUNA VISITOR’S GUIDE

Even before it became to beknown as Fortuna, there was some-thing special about this little com-munity and it was playing a big partin the success of the Eel River Valley.

It was, one report noted, “a friend-ly city,” opening its doors to individ-uals and families seeking new andbetter lives in a variety of differentareas, including farming, fishing andlogging, in addition to prospectingfor gold.

Many settlers originally drawn toCalifornia by the prospects of goldsoon returned to the farming lifethey had known in the East, settlingin the rich lands of the valley to raiselivestock, grains, and a variety of

fruits.The area's ground yielded plentiful

crops of fruit and vegetables, whilethe dairy industry took an earlyfoothold and became the premierefarming occupation.

The popular local productsbecame well-known outside the areaand were soon shipped to SanFrancisco.

People of different cultures settledto work in the fish canneries on thelower Eel River, build roads and rail-roads.

The area was quickly settled by theItalians, Swiss and Portuguese, andmany individuals today can trace

their lineage to these immigrantswith strong work ethics of a centuryago.

This small, unincorporated townfirst was known as Slide (namedafter a large slide in the area frompresent-day State Highway 36 toKenmar Road) and then waschanged to Springville (named afterthe numerous natural springs).

Originally a company town toaccommodate local mill workers,Springville eventually grew largeenough to house a post office.

By 1884 the Springville residentshad sent a petition to the state legis-lature asking that the town's name

be changed to Fortuna. It is unsure who officially decided

upon the name Fortuna - meaningfortune - but it is believed to havebeen a local minister and real estateagent who made lots available ataffordable prices.

On July 3, 1888, the town andpost office were officially namedFortuna. The town quickly grew intoits name "fortune," due in part to itsexcellent location between the red-wood forests, the Pacific Ocean andthe Eel River Valley.

After Fortuna was incorporatedon Feb. 20, 1906, it established itselfas a growing community with a citycouncil, a night watchman and a fireand water committee. It becameknown for its agricultural excellencein vegetable crops, berries and fruitsas well as fish from the Eel River, although it was the lumbering thatput Fortuna on the map.

The lumber mills that had firstestablished Fortuna as a mill townregulated Fortuna's growth, and thearea became more populated as the

town became more prosperous.People moved to Fortuna with theprospect of good jobs and an order-ly town in which to raise their fami-lies.

Meanwhile, the railroad was builtto haul trees to the mills and finishedwood products to the boat landings.Later it grew to haul freight, farmproducts and passengers.

The Pacific Lumber Companybuilt a small section from Scotia toAlton and then to its mill in Carlotta, while the completion of the tunnelthrough Table Bluff in 1885 allowedthe Eel River and Eureka Railroad tomake daily scheduled runs fromEureka to Alton.

In Alton, passengers and freightwould switch to Pacific LumberCompany trains for the journey toScotia and points south. Before longthe track was extended to Dyervilleand local trains made stops at all thesmall settlements along their tracks, bringing news and mail, picking upfarm produce and passengers.

By 1893 a railroad depot had been

built in Fortuna.Work had been started to link the

North Coast’s railroads with the restof the world, and on Dec. 1, 1914,the first regular train from out of thearea passed through Fortuna at 9:20p.m. and arrived in Eureka at 10p.m. Fortuna became a regular stopbetween Eureka and San Francisco, giving travelers easy access to thearea. Trains also became the fastestway for mail to be transportedbetween towns.

The railroad put Fortuna in anenviable position—it had the railline to town as well as local roads to

Ferndale and other towns to thenorth and south. By having connec-tions in every direction, Fortunabegan to grow and the other smallertowns in the area began to lose theirprestige. People even began to takethe train to Fortuna instead of takingthe ocean steamers to Eureka.

Fortuna, originally known for itsideal location and prosperity, is nowknown for its eagerly awaited eventsand festivals.

Today thousands of visitors enjoyone – or many – of the numerousactivities in “the friendly city.

16 FORTUNA VISITOR’S GUIDE

HOW TALL ARE THEREDWOODS, REALLY?The coast redwoods can grow toover 360 feet tall. Imagine standingat the goal post on a football field. Now walk all the way to the othergoal post. Now walk another 60feet—that's how tall these trees cangrow! The theoretical limit to theheight of a redwood tree is 420 feet, though no trees standing todayapproach that lofty stature. Where is the world's tallest redwoodtree? The claim of the world's tallest treetends to bounce back and forthbetween several Redwood Coastparks, but currently the acknowl-

edged record holder is in Redwood National Park in Humboldt County. This world champion tree is more than 379 feet tall, almost six storiestaller than the Statue of Liberty. Redwood National Park, and nearbyHumboldt Redwoods State Park, are home to virtually all of the twentytallest trees in the world!

CAN I REALLY DRIVETHROUGH A REDWOOD TREE? Yes you can! There are three drive-through trees on the Redwood Coast: • THE CHANDELIER TREE in Leggett

(Highway 101, south of the Humboldt County border • THE SHRINE DRIVE-THRU TREE in Myers Flat,

on the Avenue of the Giants • THE KLAMATH TOUR-THRU TREE

(Highway 101, north of the Humboldt County border)

HOW LONG IS THE DRIVE TOHUMBOLDT COUNTY? Most folks choose to visit the Redwood Coast by car (though we do havea great little airport with flights to San Francisco, Sacramento, LosAngeles and Portland). But as they say, it's not just the destination, it's thejourney. The incredibly scenic drive over Highway 299 from Redding—following the Trinity River for much of the way—takes two and one-halfhours. Coming down from Grants Pass, Oregon along Highway 199 isthree or four hours. If you're coming from Sacramento or the Bay Area, count on five or more hours to reach Eureka along Highway 101. It alldepends…are you going to stop and visit a winery or sightsee on theAvenue of the Giants? If it seems like a long way, don't worry—it's worthit.

WHERE CAN I GO SWIMMINGON THE REDWOOD COAST? Northern California beaches are not the same as Southern Californiaones. We absolutely do not recommend swimming, body surfing or evenwading in the ocean at any time of the year. When walking near the surf,do not ever turn your back to the water as random “sneaker waves” havebeen known to drag people out to sea. Equal caution should be exercisedin local rivers, which can have unexpectedly strong and deep currents. Apersonal flotation device (life jacket) is always a good idea. Are you scaredyet? Good! Now here's where you can swim safely: Big Lagoon and StoneLagoon, on the lagoon sides of the beach; Freshwater County Park andBenbow Lake State Recreation Area (summers only); the Little River atMoonstone Beach (pay attention to the tide); Swimmer's Delight at VanDuzen County Park; shallow, low-flow areas of the Eel, Mad and TrinityRivers, and Arcata Community Pool. One exception to our no-ocean ruleis College Cove at Trinidad State Beach, where just as everywhere else, you need to assess the conditions and use your common sense.

ISN'T IT ALWAYS RAINING/FOGGYIN HUMBOLDT COUNTY? No, it just seems that way. There's no question that the Redwood Coastenjoys a cool and moist climate—otherwise the redwoods would notgrow! But the weather is seldom a barrier to outdoor recreation. Rainfallvaries from about 38 inches a year in Eureka on the coast, to over 100inches on the Lost Coast. Most of our rain falls between the months ofNovember and April, with summer and fall typically fine and dry. Coastalfog may develop during summer months, usually burning off by mid-day. Can I collect driftwood, shells and pebbles on Redwood Coast beaches? Well…you shouldn't fill up a wheelbarrow, but feel free to keep smallpieces of wood and stone that catch your eye. Agate Beach, locatedbetween Patricks Point State Park and Big Lagoon County Park and acces-sible from each, is especially popular with rock hounds, who spend hourssearching for semi-precious agates, jade and moonstones. You may alsopick berries for your own consumption (salmonberries and thimbleber-ries in early summer, blackberries in early fall). Otherwise, please don'tpick or harvest any plants in the Redwood Coast parks.

WHERE CAN I CAMP ON THE BEACH? The Redwood Coast offers several camping opportunities a stone's throwfrom the surf. Try Clam Beach County Park and Gold Bluff Beach withinPrairie Creek Redwoods State Park. If you like to rough it, try the CoastalTrail, also in Prairie Creek, the Dry Lagoon environmental camp, or thecoastal wilderness of the Lost Coast in the King Range NationalConservation Area. At Big Lagoon County Park there's camping right onthe lagoon and you can jump straight from your tent or RV into yourcanoe or kayak.
