    Title: Formula Sheet 1

Objectives: Students will be able to read and recognize problems where the Proficiency

Formula Sheet can be used. Students will be able to put important information into theformulas and solve.

Materials: teacher notes and scriptformula sheet (1 per student)

formula sheet study guide (1 per student)student worksheet (1 per student)

    Previous Knowledge Needed: None

Important Concepts/Methods: Using the formula sheet.

Script: Teacher: Pass out copy of formula sheet. Have students look over quietly for 1-

2 minutes. Have students work in pairs to see how much they can complete of the

Formula Sheet Study Guide (five minutes). Go over the correct answers and have thestudents fill in the correct answers:

    1) Opposite sides of a quadrilateral are parallel, 4 right angles.2) W width, l- length.3) Perimeter distance around the outside of a shape, Area the space an object

    takes up on the inside.

    4) When you count up the sides, you count up 2 lengths and 2 widths.5) Opposite sides are parallel, quadrilateral.6) B base, h height.7) They are really the same, you just need to make sure that you are measuring

the height of the parallelogram and not a slanted side.

    8) R radius, d- diameter.9) Diameter is twice the length of a radius.10)Circumference is the same as perimeter distance around the outside of a

circle.11)The symbol is pi and is 3.14.12)B stands for base 1 and base 2.13)A triangle is half of a rectangle area formula.14)C is the hypotenuse always and a and b represent sides.15)Surface area is adding up all the areas of the sides and volume is the area of

    the base times the height.16)L-length, w-width, h-height.17)

Pi r squared.18)It is 1/3 the formula for cylinder.

    19)Quart standard.20)Standard inch, pound21)F-Fahrenheit, c-Celsius.

Teacher: Pass out the Student Worksheet. Have the students match the problems to theformulas and solve. (10 - 15minutes).

Common Mistakes: Students confuse area and perimeter often as well as circumference

and area. Students have trouble with surface area vs. volume. When students use theFahrenheit and Celsius formulas, they get stuck on the fraction part. It is easier to have

them multiply by the numerator first then divide the product by the denominator.

Student Problems: By looking at the Formula Sheet, have the students try to solve the

problems, then go over the answers together.

    1) D 2) D 3) B 4) D 5) B 6) A 7) D 8) C 9) A10) C 11) B 12) C 13) B
