ROBERT KUBICA

The fact that Kubica himself never gave up hope illuminates the unshakable determination that also drives him on track.

What might have been for Poland’s only Formula 1 race winner, Robert Kubica, who recently admitted that he had already signed a contract to drive for Ferrari before a serious rally crash in early 2011 put his career on hold.

Before turning five, Robert Kubica knew he was made for racing. It wasn’t long after he started karting in Poland that he’d won multiple championship titles. After moving to Italy to further his career, his continued karting success brought him to the attention of Renault, who signed the Pole up to their driver development programme.

No one was surprised when Kubica made his way into Formula 1. After starting the 2006 season as a reserve driver for BMW Sauber, Kubica was promoted to a race seat at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Just two years later, he won the Canadian Grand Prix for BMW Sauber. Finishing a credible fourth in the 2008 World Championship, Kubica’s star was on the rise.

Unfortunately, Kubica suffered a horrific accident at a rally in Italy before the start of the 2011 F1 season. Enduring countless operations on the road to recovery, the determined Pole was back behind the wheel of a rally car less than two years later, but still craved a return to Formula 1. After performing well in several F1 tests in 2017, Kubica was confirmed as Williams reserve driver in 2018 and made a full-time return to the Formula 1 grid this year, a full eight years after he left.
