Joe Phillips •Memphis Environmental Center2603 Corp. Avenue, Suite 100Memphis, TN 38132(901)345-1788
Dear Mr. Phillips,
Crawford and Associates, Inc. analyzed charcoal well receptors for Memphis Environmental Center from
November 2, 1996 through April 2, 1997 using Crawford and Associates, Inc. laboratory procedures (see
Appendix I). Included in the analysis was a matrix interference investigation for the 5 monitoring wells,
using Sulphorhodamine B to determine if this dye would be satisfactory for this study area, the matrix test
showed that there were no constituents at these locations that would affect Sulphorhodamine B from
absorbing onto the charcoal.
The first 2 sample sets were analyzed on 10/9/96 & 10/16/96, for Sulphorhodamine B to determine
background levels at the five locations. Sample set 03 was analyzed on November 10, 1996 this was the
first set after dye injection, the results of the analysis produced a Sulphorhodamine B concentration of
2.123 parts per billion at location CW51EP. Sample sets 4 through 14 were analyzed for the same dye
with no detectable Sulphorhodamine B levels above background for any of the sample sets. The
analysis on April 2, 1997, sample set 14, concluded the work done by Crawford and Associates, Inc.
If we can offer any other assistance with regards to this project or any future projects please feel free tocall.
Sincerely,
Andrei KerpanHydrologist I
APPENDIX I
Crawford & Associates, Inc.
LABORATORY PROCEDURES:QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL
Instrumentation* Shimadzu Model RF 5301PC for both charcoal and water samples» Long-wave ultraviolet light for the following dyes:
• Palanil Luminous Red G• Tinopal CBS-X• Direct Yellow 96
Charcoal Testine Preparation• Wash each receptor under high-speed jet of water• Label each receptor with site name, number, and date of collection• Dry receptors in an oven for 12 hours at 120°C• Weigh 1.5 grams of charcoal into a labeled, disposable plastic container• Store remainder of charcoal in original bag• Add 4.5 ml of Smart solution to weighed charcoal• After 15 minutes, transfer elutant to test tube• Place in a Constant temperature bath at 30°C• Analyze by synchronous scanning on Shimadzu RF 5301 PC spectrofluorophotometer
Smart Solution• 1-proponal 100% assay• Distilled water4 Ammonium hydroxide 28-30% assay• Mixed at a 5:3:2 ratio
Water Sample Preparation• Transfer a 3.0 ml aliquot from water sample bottle into a test tube• Place into constant temperature bath at 30°C» Analyze by synchronous scanning on Shimadzu RF 5301 PC spectrofluorophotometer
Analysis of Cottons# Wash under a high-speed jet of tap water«• Observe under a long-wave ultraviolet light• Visually compare to cotton standards* If positive, place in freezer to prevent microbial degradation of dyes
Notes on Dye QuantificationDye concentrations, expressed in ppb, are semi-quantitative compared with the actual quantity of dye in thewater passing over the receptor. The quantity of dye absorbed is a function of dye concentration, quantity, velocity, temperature, and duration of exposure. The quantity of dye eluted from the charcoal is dependentupon the amount of charcoal and eluent used, the type of eluent, whether the charcoa! is wet or dry uponelution, and the length of time the charcoal is allowed to elute before analysis. While the laboratoryprocedures can be standardized, the exposure variables in the stream cannot. Since dye concentrations aresemi-quantitative, the following abbreviations are used to express the concentration in more general terms:
Crawford & Associates, Inc.
ND Below Quantitation Limit+ Positive++ Very Positive+++ Extremely PositiveB Background LevelsNS Dye Receptor Not Recovered
Criteria for Interpreting Results: Background Dve Receptors* Recorded peak of the curve must be within 5 nm of characteristic wavelength of the dye• Concentration must be 3 times the detection limit# Shape of the curve must be characteristic shape of dye curve, as determined by standards
Criteria for Interpreting Results: Negative ResultsThere can be no dye detected at or above determined quantitation limit (3 times the detection limit)
Criteria for Interpreting Results: Background ResultsThis involves a sample which has a concentration greater than or equal to the quantitation limit, but lessthan 10 times the concentration of the highest background receptor
Criteria for Interpreting Results: Positive Results* Peak of the curve must be within 5 nm of that for specific dye* Concentration greater than 10 times detection limit4 Concentration greater than 10 times that of the highest background receptor* Minimum of two positives for a particular location to be positive trace
Quality Control: Field DuplicatesDuplicate receptors must be placed at 20% or more of the sites to be monitored. Secondary receptors areanalyzed as duplicates for at least 10% of the total dye receptor locations.
Quality Control: Trip BlanksAt least two extra blank receptors are sent along with the new dye receptors per trip. The trip blanks arethen kept with the collected dye receptors, after installation of the new ones. These are then analyzed uponreturn to the laboratory.
Quality Control: Laboratory Samples* Eluent QA/QC* Distilled Water QA/QC* Charcoal QA/QC* Raman Scattering Sample* Laboratory Control Standards* Activated Charcoal Control Sample
Eluent OA7OCEach batch of eluent solution is analyzed for each dye before it is used to elute charcoal samples.Additionally, an eluent blank is analyzed at the beginning, every 20th sample, and at the end of analysis.
Crawford & Associates, Inc.
Distilled Water OA/OCEach batch of distilled water is analyzed for each dye before it is used. Additionally, a distilled water blankis analyzed at the beginning, every 20th sample, and at the end of analysis.
Charcoal OA/OCA sample of each new sealed container of activated charcoal is eluted and analyzed for each dye before thecharcoal is used. While charcoal may possess fluorescence, it does not typically coincide with the peaks forthe dyes used.
Raman Scattering SampleA Raman scattering pattern and signal-to-noise ratio check is performed on the distilled water at thebeginning and end of each sample set analysis. This is the method recommended by the manufacturer forinsuring the instrument works within specified parameters and for insuring calibration of the instrument.
Laboratory Control StandardsAt the quantitation limit for each of the dyes to be analyzed, a low concentration standard is analyzed beforeand after each set of samples. This procedure demonstrates that the Shimadzu is capable of detection at theminimum detection limit and provides data that can be used to determine the accuracy and precision of theanalysis.
Activated Charcoal Control SampleA charcoal receptor that has been pre-treated with a dye not used in the tracer study will be added to thesample set prior to washing; it will be processed with the other samples. This provides a method foridentifying errors should any occur during sample processing.
